[Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-03-04 Thread Brett Howard
So I'm thinking about wiring up the FSK IN pin on the AUX connector to
do RTTY TX properly. I'm curious of a few things before I take the
time to make the cable.

First off how do people usually drive this signal? I assume its usually
taken off of a serial port... I've tried a few RTTY apps and I've
gotten them all to work via AFSK and all seem to have their pros/cons.
I have a feeling in the end that I'll probably most use MMTTY being that
it has a very nice interface into N1MM (unless there is another
application that has a nice interface into N1MM that I should be aware
of).

Finally my last question is that if this comes off of a UART how has the
timing been for people? I remember a while back I used a UART to to CW
keying in N1MM. I remember being embarrassed by the CW that was sent
and I've since bought a K1EL WKUSB kit and put that together... Very
happy with that little box. Would I have these same timing issues in
this FSK_IN setup? If there was ever a stupid thing is trying to use
Windows as an RTOS. ;)

Anyway thoughts appreciated.

[Elecraft] OT: FCC seeks comments on blanket amateur radio waiver for disaster drills

2010-03-04 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-10-365A1.pdf

The Federal Communications Commission is accepting comments through
April 2 on an AHA request for a blanket waiver to permit hospitals
seeking accreditation from The Joint Commission to use amateur radio
operators who are hospital employees to transmit communications on
behalf of the hospital as part of emergency preparedness drills.
Hospitals accredited by The Joint Commission must prepare an emergency
operations plan setting forth how the hospital will communicate during
emergencies, establish back-up communications links to communicate
essential information if primary communication systems fail, and test
their emergency operations plans twice annually. The AHA requested the
blanket waiver last month as an interim solution to prevent the FCC
and hospitals from having to prepare, file and process a raft of
waiver requests while the FCC prepares a proposed rule that would
allow amateur radio operators who are hospital employees to
participate in drills.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #3934 live and running

2010-03-04 Thread HarrytheHam

George,

It really depends on the type of noise. The various outboard DSP units are
quite helpful improving selectivity of older radios, clarity by reducing
some background noise, etc. I don't recall them being effective with impulse
and/or broadband noise typically associated with things like powerlines,
mercury or sodium vapor lights, etc. On occasion you may find a rig's noise
blanker can help, but unfortunately few NBs perform well.

Some years ago out of the blue I got hit with S9+ noise across all bands
almost 24 hrs a day. Powerlines are underground. Spent days tracking it.
Then one day while raking leaves I noticed my neighbor's sodium vapor
floodlights were flickering...a symptom the lights were on their last legs,
but long legs since it took months for them to finally go kaput. I
purchased a Timewave ANC-4 unit and installed a noise sensing antenna. With
time and patience to experiment with antenna placement and the ANC-4
settings I was able to get the noise from S9+ to S2. But again, it took a
lot of time and patience to get there and it worked for that particular type
of noise...may not work for others.

I seem to recall a link somewhere on the ARRL website that takes you to a
page where various noise samples are recorded. This may be a good place to
start so you can get a sense of a particular noise source that may be
causing much of your grief.

[Elecraft] RTTY questions

2010-03-04 Thread DALE LONG
I am having trouble getting started in RTTY.  Am using AFSK and N1MM with MTTY.

In the RTTY Engine it appears that I am transmitting, but there is no output.
Last night I went through all the K3 config parameters, and still no luck.

There were a few times that I noticed an Overload error message...Another
thing is that in the TX tab of the setup, it will not recognize my COM port.
Thats probably because it is in use. The problem may be a N1MM setup issue.  In
the Configur Ports tab, what ports do I need to assign in addition to the radio?

Thanks

In FM mode, hold PITCH and set VFO A to 1750 Hz, and VFO B to TONE ON.

The K3 will display FM T

When you transmit, the 1750 Hz tone will be sent every time for about a
second.

I just tested it here and verified it is working.

Comment on the FSK circuit.
MMTTY used to send upside down in FSK and there was no way to change it
via software.
It is possible the circuit may have to be modified to invert the polarity.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-03-04 Thread Richard Ferch
Brett,

Regarding the timing problems you had with CW from a serial port: In
this situation the timing is not done by the UART, it is done directly
by the CPU toggling the control line (usually DTR) on and off, and is
therefore subject to non-RTOS timing problems. If you are using a UART
to do FSK on its standard TxD data output, the timing is controlled by
the clock in the UART, so the timing issues that affect serial port CW
do not affect FSK done in this way. In a sense, the UART for FSK is a
logical equivalent to the Winkeyer chip for CW.

However, this only applies if the UART is capable of doing 5-bit codes
at 45.45 baud. The UARTs used in PC serial ports have this capability,
but most USB-to-serial adapters do not. One giveaway is the maximum
speed supported by the adapter; if it is greater than 230 kb/sec, then
the minimum speed is too high for RTTY. Currently available single
USB-to-serial adapters are too fast for RTTY, but some 4-port or 8-port
USB adapters can handle the slower speed.

There is an add-in for MMTTY called EXTFSK that is capable of doing
45.45 baud RTTY with any USB-to-serial adapter. EXTFSK can key any of
the TxD, DTR or RTS signal lines on any serial port or serial adapter;
in fact, it can even do FSK keying via a parallel port. The downside is
that the timing is handled by the CPU, not by the UART. However,
apparently EXTFSK uses the same sound card timer that is used for AFSK,
so the timing of EXTFSK-sent FSK should be the same as the timing of
sound card AFSK, no better and no worse.

You do need a keying circuit between the serial port and the K3's FSK
input. The same kind of one-transistor or opto-isolator circuit that is
usually used for serial port CW or PTT will also work for FSK keying.

Great advice. One of the most important functions of voice playback

[Elecraft] OT: RFI from Modern Furnaces

2010-03-04 Thread Don Nelson

Hi all,

There was a discussion some time ago about RFI emanating from front loading
washers.

This note is about the possibility of RFI emanating from microprocessor
controlled house furnaces. We had to have our house furnace replaced last
week because of a failure. Yes we winter camped for a over a day as a
result. We now have a 95 percent efficient microprocessor controlled furnace
installed. I did not think about possible RFI that it might emit at the time
of choosing that furnace.

The good news is that I have not found any RFI on the HF bands as yet while
the furnace is active or not active. My question to the group is: was I
lucky? The furnace control has a very nontrivial computer control and could
cause plenty of noise. It would be nice to think that the designers of
furnace control systems are sensitive to RFI radiation issues.

The furnace is a Lennox model G71MPP.

The most likely source of RFI on the HF bands would be a variable speed motor
controller. These are essentially switching power supplies driving square
vave generators that are pulse width modulated to control motor speed. If you
had that problem you would kiow it. Big time. :)

2010-03-04 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn

I use a foot switch, but mostly so I can mutter between QSOs ;o)

I have a problem with the soundcard to K3 connection. When I use the rear
mic jack, I get a low level squeal/tone . I do not have this when I use the
front mic jack. Both are set High... I'm using a stereo cable, which works
fine. The mic is an HC-4 connected via the sound card.

I am definitely a SSB neophyte, but did manage to get N1MM to send a few
messages for me and CQ.
Definitely room for improvement.

 Are these commands available somewhere?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Your HC-4 should
connect to the sound card MIC IN (via STEREO plug with audio on
tip, shield on shell, no connection to ring). Turn sound card MIC
BOOST on. The sound card output (tip or ring of 1/8 stereo)
should connect to LINE IN on the K3 (1/8 mono).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Stereo mic plug into rear panel mic (mono) jack! Okor not? PTT or VOX during SSB contest?

2010-03-04 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn

HC-4 is plugged into the sound card MIC IN, straight connection, no adapter.
It works fine, can record and audio is good.

The sound card output was connected to the K3 MIC MONO on the rear panel,
with rP.H selected in config. I did this based on N1MM setup information. I
used a stock 1/8 stereo cable. I did not try LINE IN MONO on the rear of
the K3.

I did get it to work by going from sound card out to the K3 front panel mic
connector using the Heil adapter. It was set at FP.H. It worked OK.

If I understand correctly, I need to have an stereo to mono adapter and use
the K3 LINE IN MONO. Is that correct?

Thanks for your help Dave!

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-03-04 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

MMTTY used to send upside down in FSK and there was no way to
 change it via software.

MMTTY does not send upside down. It generates a 1 (high) on
the output of the UART for mark which is correct. Most interfaces
use a simple NPN transistor which turns that 1 into a closed
contact (again correct for the old 60 mA loop circuits).

Unfortunately, many rigs expect the FSK input to be OPEN (or
high due to their internal pull-up) for Mark. The user needs
to read his transceiver manual and if it is normally mark open
or mark High, select REV in the menu ... this applies to
such a diverse group of transceivers as the FT-1000D, FT-1000MP,
IC-706mkIIg, TS-870, etc.

Again, MMTTY is not upside down ... it is the interface
standards that are still rooted in the 60 mA current loop
instead of the data communications world where Mark=1/Space=0.

It is possible the circuit may have to be modified to invert

  The timing is solid.

Re: [Elecraft] A K2 question - checking the amp

2010-03-04 Thread dw
Hi Dan,
You might check the DC bias voltage on the current sense resistor near
U7A.
I would guess that it would be higher when the K2 Power is set above 10
watts then when it is set below.
This shift might represent Emitter current acting somewhat normal.

Perhaps check the voltage difference between pin 6 of U7B and each base
of the 2879s.
These should not be too different from each other.

I might check the resistance between pin 6 of u7B to GND and compare
that to the 2879s Base to GND resistance. It should be a little more as
you are adding in the bias resistors.

Even with the 2879s in circuit I would try using my diode check on the
2879s emitter-base junctions, for the possiblity they can be read that
way.

At a time like this, one would surely like to have a schematic marked up
with the good-known test voltages marked on it!

Hope this helps,
N1BBR

?Hello all,
Is there a way to check the PA transisters in my K2 safely while still
installed?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-03-04 Thread Richard Ferch
The Invert logic option in MMTTY only applies to PTT. The UART's FSK
output cannot be inverted. If you are using EXTFSK, there is an option
to invert the FSK logic in EXTFSK. This is immaterial with a K3, though;
all you have to do is adjust CONFIG:FSK POL (set it = 1 for normal
polarity).

[Elecraft] K3DSP Upgrade Board

2010-03-04 Thread John Huffman
FYI -

I ordered the K3DSPUPGD board to update my K3. I ordered it Jan 10.
Had no word, but the 3-4 weeks on the shipping status page on the
Elecraft web site had passed by twice.

So, last Friday I called and talked to Lisa. She said it would be 3
more weeks, anyway. But she suggested an alternative that worked out
well - send my board in for modification.

Mailed it from Maine last Friday. They got it Monday. Modified it
Tuesday. Shipped it back Tuesday. Arrived in Maine on Thursday. In
the radio and back in operation on Thursday.

At 6 days door to door across country, it's a great option. Most
everyone can live with the backup rig for less than a week.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY via FSK-D

2010-03-04 Thread Ed Muns
First off how do people usually drive this signal? I assume
its usually taken off of a serial port... I've tried a few
RTTY apps and I've gotten them all to work via AFSK and all
 seem to have their pros/cons.

The most common way, and compatible with most loggers and RTTY software, is
to drive the K3 FSK and PTT lines on the AUX connecter from a serial COM
port on the PC. All that's needed is a level shifter from the PC RS-232 to
the K3 TTL. Use a 1-2Kohm base resistor and an NPN switching transistor in
the FSK and PTT lines. A diagram of this (except for the K3 AUX connector
pins which is in the K3 manual) can be found many places, including
www.rttycontesting.com.

I have a feeling in the end that I'll probably most use MMTTY
being that it has a very nice interface into N1MM (unless
there is another application that has a nice interface into
N1MM that I should be aware of).

In the recent RTTY Contesting Survey just completed, 75% of the respondents
use MMTTY. Look no further. It is beautifully integrated with N1MM Logger.

Finally my last question is that if this comes off of a UART
how has the timing been for people? I remember a while back
I used a UART to to CW keying in N1MM. I remember being
embarrassed by the CW that was sent and I've since bought a
K1EL WKUSB kit and put that together... Very happy with that
little box. Would I have these same timing issues in this
FSK_IN setup? If there was ever a stupid thing is trying to
use Windows as an RTOS. ;)

Timing is perfect. I've never heard of a problem, especially because of the
UART in the PC.

do that, you need to feed the mic to the computer and let N1MM turn it on and

That is precisely why I use the separate digital interface. I built a separate
relay into my interface that disconnects the microphone when the computer is
operational sending a SSB message, and the mic is activated and the computer
message is stopped as soon as I put down the footswitch to manually operate the
mic. I can't imagine trying to use the computer during a SSB contest or for
meteor scatter without the ability to interrupt it. The programs I have used
for
this look for an interrupt via the serial port's DSR line.

I would think this would be possible with a flexible rig such as the K3, but
apparently it is not yet incorporated into the firmware. I don't know if it is
on
a firmware wish list or not, but I think it should be.
