Hi Fred, I must have been the other person. I had written to Steve a few days ago about being able to send a CW SPOT command (SW42) from a keyboard function key like F12. I think it would be great if WriteLog had the ability to serially send user configurable commands to the K3. K3 users of WriteLog should write to Steve if they could benefit from this ability. 73, Mike K2MK Fred Atchley wrote: If you are a WriteLog user you may want to check out their new webpage look. My problem now is I need a way to introduce Elecraft K3 Commands from WriteLog. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and WriteLog
When I got back on the air in 2003 after a long absence, it was at Field Day and our club used WriteLog. I've always been a contester at heart, so I bought it and used it for about four years. Then my new Field Day group here in CA decided they were using the N1MM Logger, so I downloaded it and started using it so I would be proficient on Field Day. It wasn't long before I liked N1MM a lot more than WriteLog, and for about three years, it's been my primary contest logging software. That decision was cast in concrete a year or so ago when I put a new computer in my ham shack and tried to install WriteLog on it for guest operators. WriteLog wouldn't install, because it was more than a year since I had purchased an upgrade. Goodbye WriteLog. The primary reasons I like N1MM better are operating features that give me a competitive advantage. It also helps that it's free. :) 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Your suggestions for AMP for K2 QRP unit
Hi All, The new EC 500 amp coming out will require the KPA-100 PA for K2 users. I am interested in adding an amp that can run from the K2 without the KPA-100. I don't care about QSK, I can switch the amp ON and OFF XMIT manually or I can build an interface that will switch the amp from the K2 AUX line. However, I will be locating the amp in a remote room (not located at in the shack room) so I will want an amp that I can perhaps build a wired control for band selections. It would be better if it does not have a built in tuner. But since it will be remote, I will need a unit that will not require direct controling of band switching, tuning etc. Also, it must be able to output at least 200 watts CW all bands. Your suggestions very welcome. My password was hacked,... but in a different manner than I had anticipated, (obviously) H (hacker person) aquired access to my laptop, through Avast, and Windows, and wireless firewalls, changed the security parameters on the laptop, made it repeat the passwords to him, so when I changed the password, to Hotmail, on that machine, H had it also. Now, this is from a different machine, the wireless hub has been firewalled shut, and there is not much chance for that to happen again, unless H has access to this machine, or to Hotmail in another, unanticipated manner. Thanks for all the well wishing, and good thoughts... and there is just one other minor thought this never happened on cw. ever. If I had stayed on the radio it wouldn't have happened either. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Download Warning [status report]
We recently had some K3 firmware download issues. We found that these have nothing to do with new K3 firmware, so you can safely load new revisions at any time. What happened in most cases was that the P3 interfered with the K3 firmware load. This will be corrected. For now, please turn your P3 completely off when loading new K3 firmware. (If you have the P3 strapped to turn on with the K3, just temporarily unplug its power.) Sorry for the temporary inconvenience. Other download issues had to do with specific combinations of USB-to- RS232 adapters, device drivers, and in some cases the Mac version of K3 Utility. We're working on that. [Elecraft] P3 ideas
I am enjoying my P3-K3 combination. I find that the second Rx seems more useful to me now. I used to operate almost all the time in diversity mode. Now I find that I can do that or what I explain below. One of the ways I am using it is setting the center frequency of VFO A to 7.015 MHZ with a +/- 15 KHz span. Then I operate split. I tune with VFO B or cursor B to look at signals. My second Rx is on my vertical, the primary Rx is on an inverted V. So the waterfall is on the inverted V but I am listening and transmitting on the vertical. I can reverse the antennas if I wish depending on what works best. Using this method I keep the waterfall/spectrum fixed, no jumping of the center frequency when I QSY. I know some wished that the spectrum could be fixed while the Rx tunes within the space. This approach does this with the limitation that I am limited to operating with the second Rx. It would be useful to be able to have a fixed spectrum center and span and tune both Rx within the span. Also it would be useful to have one or two demodulators in the P3 producing audio out for cursor A and B. Okay, now I would need four speakers. I like that the spectrum display is calibrated (or will be). I would like the option to be able to switch to an S-meter scale vs. dBm, or maybe dBm left and S-units on the right. I find that I am adjusting REF LVL often. My background noise level must move up and down perhaps with band conditions. I can set it just right and then come back after a period and find the waterfall mostly dark because the background noise has dropped. My thought is that I would like the P3 to have a very-long time AGC that auto adjusts the REF LVL to maintain perhaps some percent speckle rate on the waterfall. [Elecraft] P3 Cursor Position Incorrect After Band change...
On my P3, I notice that the little cyan cursor location does not align itself properly during a band change that also involves a mode change. For example, switching from 17 Meter band with USB to 20 Meter band with CW leaves the cursor aligned to the right of the center position as it would be for USB but not as it should be for the CW signal. All IF shift controls are in their normal position. Indeed, a power off and power on cycle of the P3 resets the cursor location to be correct. I figure if a power-off/power-on fixes a problem then there probably is a problem. Anyone else seen this same thing? If it is unique to my P3 maybe I have a very special P3 that might be worth a lot of money (sort of like an old stamp with a flaw in it). 73, phil, K7PEH K3 #3799, P3 #0030 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Hoping for an Elecraft SALE event
Time will tell how prices will change. But Elecraft has a unique position in the market... While Kenwood lowered their price for the TS-480 SAT for example over time globally. But then, the K2 and now the K3 gets perpetually improved and the line gets expanded. Why not add hundreds of K3 orders before the TS-590 hits the street? Quick, name the nearest 3 competitors to the K3! Is it a monster transceiver needing to be drop shipped? Is it a SDR requiring a powerful computer which has a hungry power supply, thus the opposite of going green? Whatever it is, it is more expensive AFAIK! How about a Labor Day Special? Spend $ 1.000 and get 5% off. Buy a K3 and add ons for $ 1,000 or more and get 10% off? Lots of people have wish lists with items like a 2nd receiver or a P3 on them. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY and Audio
Hi again Tom, No, that doesn't sound normal. What are your DSP filter settings (shift and width), and what is your Pitch set to in FSK D? Your filter FC should be 85 Hz above the Pitch setting, and the BW should be 300 Hz or more (250 Hz is usable once a strong signal is tuned in accurately, but it can be hard to find and tune signals in with filters this narrow). Also, do you have the Dual PB filter selected? I'd suggest leaving this feature turned off to start out. 73, Rich VE3KI W4BQF wrote: Is it normal for there to be only very weak RTTY audio, even with the AF control ¾ of the way clockwise? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Yes. I run mine like that and everyone seems to like it. Me too. Another point about setting levels. The CM500 is a pretty hot mic -- that is, it puts out a lot of voltage -- so you will want to use the LOW setting for mic gain (in the K3 setup menu). Once you have done that, AND set the TX EQ as David recommends, THEN follow the directions in the K3 manual to set audio levels. The executive summary of that is set Display so that it reads ALC and compression, use the mic gain to set for a given ALC reading, then set Compression to get 10dB of compression as indicated on the front panel meter. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
