[Elecraft] Interface for MRP 40
I would like to use the MRP40 CW program with my K3 (1336) connected to my laptop and need details of a suitable interface unit, preferably homebrew. Re: [Elecraft] Interface for MRP 40
Since MRP40 CW uses the computer's sound card all you need with the K3 is a 1/8 stereo jack to hack cable the K3 already has a line out that is transformer isolated and at the appropriate level to drive PC sound-cards I see that MRP40 CW advocates using AFSK in SSB to send CW, please don't since unless very carefully done with a high quality computer soundcard it will result in a very wide and grotty transmitted signal. I hear quite a few crappy AFSK CW signals on the bands and I am pretty tired of having QSO's ruined by AFSK CW a couple of KHZ away from me. the K3 has the hardware required to CW key and activate PTT via RS232 built in In summary, you need an audio cable and perhaps an RS232 cable On Tue, 2011-05-24 at 09:34 +0100, Gavin Keegan wrote: I would like to use the MRP40 CW program with my K3 (1336) connected to my laptop and need details of a suitable interface unit, preferably homebrew. Re: [Elecraft] Interface for MRP 40
I use the SignaLink USB sound card by Tigertronics which is recommended by the MRP40 software. See http://www.tigertronics.com/ You will want to also order the Elecraft K3 rear panel radio cable and the SLMODK3 Plug and play jumper module. This is not homebrew and the price is $105 plus $10 for the jumper. Just so you know, the MRP40 software like all CW decoding programs suffers from severe limitations. Unless you are receiving the signal loud and clear and the sender is sending near perfect code (preferably computer generated), you will see a lot of garbage. Your own brain decoding CW works a lot better. How about a top that is fastened to different drilled screw holes on a base mounting. The operator uses the screw holes that suit the angle desired. Not so difficult as a detent. 73, Guy. I prefer my arm to lie at 90 to the table and my wrist and fingers to follow in a straight line for minimum stress, maximum comfort to the paddle. Rotating the rig 15 would help a lot. But I have another problem which is that I often operate the tune with my left hand while my right stays put on the paddle, so, with this arrangement, my left hand has to be held up and across me, which I think I would find uncomfortable quite quickly. I don't think it's a deal breaker and the panadaptor idea on a netbook is definitely a deal maker. David G3UNA One of the things that impressed me a lot about the KX1 was the 45 degree mounting of the paddles - VERY practical! Will the KX3 development phase be an opportunity to add more facilities to the keyer firmware, and feed them back into the K3 as well? Compared to all the other facilities of the K3, the internal keyer remains rather ordinary. Even a $6 K1EL chip has *many* more options. Keying is very much a personal preference, and some operators would like to use other modes besides Curtis A and B without being forced to use an external keyer (and lose the facility to send RTTY and data from the paddle). I'm not suggesting cloning the entire feature set of an external keyer, but the K1EL keyers would be a good roadmap for enhancements. -- 73 from Ian GM3SEK http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] ATU Question
Bill, From page 22 of the the K3 owners manual: Up to 30 ATU settings are saved for both antennas on every band. When you hit ATU TUNE, the K3 stores the tune settings for the KAT3 at the current frequency and for the current antenna. In AUTO mode, if the K3 determines, on transmit, that the current KAT3 tuning parameters should be replaced, it will automatically load them when you key the transmitter. You can tell this is happening because the ATU icon will flash briefly on transmit. As to how the K3 determines whether to load new parameters, I would surmise that the K3 checks the ATU map each time you transmit, checking whether the current set of KAT3 parameters best match the current transmit frequency. If it finds a better match, it loads them. For example, if you have previously hit tune at both 14.020 and 14.170, have been operating at 14.150, and now try to transmit on 14.050, the K3 will automatically load the parameters stored for 14.020. This is conjecture on my part, since I have not seen any documentation of the firmware algorithm. But it seems reasonable and in line with what the K3 actually does. Don Wilhelm-4 wrote: That is how it is supposed to work. Re: [Elecraft] K3 power loss
Check out the antenna. Maybe the radio is 'folding' back the power due to a serious antenna mis-match. The default foldback level may be 50 watts, and at power levels of 90, 100 or 110, it sees too high a VSWR and protects itself. But at 80 watts, it isn't as bad so it plods on, still suffering, but not dangerous. ...bill nr4c On Tue, 24 May 2011 16:00:49 +0200, jgaudron wrote: Hello (On behalf of a friend, Gerard, familiar with his K3, but not so much with the English language ) When he sets the power of his K3 at 110, 100, or 90 watts, it decreases gradually down to 50 watts, CW or SSB. Re: [Elecraft] Shortening a min-module PC board., how to...
Chris - Several possibilities occur to me: Assuming you don't remove any portion of any circuit trace (Duh!), I would suggest an Adel nibbler. It is designed for metal work, but works well on circuit boards. It is essentially a hand-powered shear that removes a small bite of material about 1/16 by 1/4 each time it operates. If used carefully, it can make very precise holes and slots, and of course shorten material as well. It does require a minimal amount of clearance to operate. It will accommodate material up to perhaps 3/32 thick, so circuit board should fit OK. Lacking that, the next thing I might try is to mount the BL2 on a piece of scrap wood (as a handle), and VERY carefully and SLOWLY trim away the excess material using a band saw or jig saw. Keep your fingers well away from the action, of course. It is important to have something large enough to grip (the piece of scrap wood) so that if the saw tries to grab the material, you won't lose control, causing possible injury and almost certainly ruining your BL2 in the process. Personally, I would use my milling machine, but not everyone has access to one of those. However, many model railroad enthusiasts, R/C airplane pilots, and other hobbyists do have small machines, so ask around. Your local hobby shop may have some names of people that are amenable to helping others. I have done these sort of modifications many times on various boards and assemblies, and with a little care you can end up with exactly what you want. As a last thought - I would stay away from any sort of sheet metal ships or similar tools around PC boards. In my experience, attempting to use these types of tools carries a high risk of causing cracks and splits in the board. - Jim, KL7CC Christopher Kimball wrote: I have a BL2 minimodule that's about 1/4 too long for my purposes. [Elecraft] Using theshielded XG3
I have my XG3 packaged in a 6x3x2 inch diecast aluminum enclosure with a BNC FF bulkhead adapter and short BNC cable for connecting the XG3. I have not installed a small mini-phone jack for connecting the XG3 to computer for external control. I will post some photos of the setup in a few days. Just a quick (preliminary) test of my 2m transverter+K3 gives me some results for MDS: The DEMI 144/28 transverter is spec at 1 dBNF and 17-dB conversion gain. Inputing this into my pathlink analysis program gives me the theoretical MDS (dBm for SNR=0) as -138 dBm using 2.8 KHz bw (SSB). I used -138 dBm as spec for the K3 at 500-KHz bw which results in a 9 dBNF for my calculations. -138 dBm at 2.8 KHz compares to a system NF= 1.46 dB I started with two 20-dB Bird coax attenuators attached to the shielded XG3 and determined that I needed to run -33 dBm for the signal to be detected, so I changed to a 30-dB JFW step attenuator finding that a signal with 25 dB attenuation -(107+25) = -132 dBm seemed near to the weakest that I could detect by ear. With the cover off the enclosure I could not reduce the signal lower than that by adding more attenuation indicating radiation leakage. With the cover on the enclosure, 30-dB attenuation results in a signal too weak to detect by ear - e.g. -137 dBm). I briefly switched to CW (400-Hz bw) so confirm that improved MDS but did not try measuring it. Note: that these measurements were using my un-calibrated ear as threshold detector; a better approach will be using the LP-Pan display to quantify measurements or using an audio voltmeter. I did not switch off the AGC for the above, either. But it does tell me in a subjective sense what I can expect from the system (afterall my ears do the decoding of CW). Next step will be inserting the signal at the input of my 2m-eme preamps for more rigorous testing (and balancing) in the process of setting up dual-pol diversity reception. With the addition of the preamp, system theoretical NF drops to essentially that of the preamp (MDS about -155 dBm at 2.8 KHz bw) I will need 48 dB attenuation to lower the XG3 -107 dBm signal to that level. Not sure that the shielding will perform that low until I try it. One interesting sidenote, I tried picking up the XG3 at -33 dBm into a rubber duckie antenna held near the transverter and could not detect the signal indicating the shielding of the transverter is excellent. My FT-847 and FT-817 clearly hear such a signal with out antennas connected. summary: the XG3 is a really nice addition to my test equipment! 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 == BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 50-1.1kw?, 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-testing*, 3400-? Re: [Elecraft] ATU Question
I believe the KAT3 remembers for two antennas for each segment in each band: 160: 10 KHz 80-12: 20 KHz 10: 100 KHz 6: 200 KHz So, I ran through the bands, stopping in the middle of each of those segments and did an ATU TUNE. Re: [Elecraft] Shortening a min-module PC board., how to...
I'm not at all sure I would want to use a nibbler on a populated PV board. Depending upon the brittleness of the board and how carefully you are able to wield the nibbler, the resultant mechanical shock could be tough on some of the components. I wouldn't try to cut it with a band saw or jig saw either. I don't think you could clamp the PC board to a larger board uniformly enough to avoid vibration (and even mechanical resonance from the saw teeth) with a high degree of confidence. I think I'd prefer to use a Dremel tool with an abrasive disk to cut the board. The cutting action would be in line with the board instead of perpendicular to it. 73, Dave AB7E On 5/24/2011 9:22 AM, Jim Wiley wrote: Chris - Several possibilities occur to me: Assuming you don't remove any portion of any circuit trace (Duh!), I would suggest an Adel nibbler. Perhaps a disc or orbital sander would accomplish the task. DON'T even think of a metal grinder! Chris, A disk or belt sander will make short work of that job. Grip the board tightly with all your thumbs so it does not catch and be flung about the shop, maybe into a soft spot on your body - be safe. [Elecraft] [K3] K3, SDR-IQ and CW Skimmer
Hello all, I have searched through nabble and found some similar posts but no definitive answer as to whether my current goal is possible: K3 using SDR-IQ in IF mode with CW Skimmer The above scenario functions but the CW Skimmer spots have a display frequency of the IF and not the K3's actual frequency. I have configured Skimmer's Omni-Rig for the K3. When I start up Skimmer I can see that Skimmer opens up the CAT port but the frequencies displayed in Skimmer are either relative (+/- 20 kHz) or if I enter 8.215 MHz as the Skimmer frequencies then the spots have an absolute frequency +/- 20 kHz of the IF. I really want to see the frequency of the actual spot! I am using CW Skimmer in SDR-IQ mode. I have LP-PAN working with Skimmer in Softrock-IF mode but the 24 kHz bandwidth limitation is frustrating. Has anyone got the SDR-IQ to work in IF mode with the K3 and CW Skimmer? Alternatively any other way to achieve what I am after - K3-IF mode skimming with a bandwidth of 96 kHz or higher? Thank you for any assistance with my goal. 73 de Rich, G4ZFE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Richard you can use your SDR-IQ on the same frequency as the K3 by using the RF IN/OUT sockets of the KXV3, CW Skimmer works for me in that way with a Perseus SDR (including using it with N1MM for K3 freq control). While I am seriously looking at the KX3 to become the main station here, and I completely agree about the bird guys, they certainly aren't the majority of us who operate at low power. I've used both the 817 and the 703, and in 37 years as a qrper, I've never had any interest in vhf. Re: [Elecraft] ATU Question
Slight correciton. The ATU will remember ATU settings by ANT, band, and band segment. This allows you to get a very close tune up through the entire band (available on all bands except 2m - K144XV), at least for segments you've run ATU TUNE within. Segment size in the lower bands is smaller in KHz than in the upper bands. Rev D9 of the owner's manual doesn't really document this feature. Maybe it should... This is an excerpt from MCU 3.03 release notes, re the band segments for the ATU: MULTIPLE KAT3 ATU DATA SEGMENTS PER BAND/PER-ANT.: 10 kHz per segment on 160 m; 20 kHz on 80-12 m; 50 kHz on 10 m; 200 kHz on 6 m. This keeps narrowband antennas in tune across the full ham band. Note 1: You do not have to go through each band and do ATU TUNE on every segment. The K3 will use the saved LC data segment closest to your present VFO location. Note 2: You can erase all of the stored LC data for a given band by tapping CLR in the CONFIG:KAT3 menu entry. 73, matt W6NIA On Tue, 24 May 2011 01:18:06 -0400, you wrote: Bill, That is how it is supposed to work. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Please need help with T/R thump
Thanks for your thoughts Don. I checked the STL and It's been at 2. The thump does not really change much on any setting of the STL. I also checked the components you suggested and Q2 and Q3 are installed correctly and in fact are J309s. R29 is also 22k and in the right place. Other associated components are correctly installed. Rick KL7CW suggested an experiment for me to try. That was to connect a .02 to .1 cap across C9 to see if it made a difference. At first I tried a .1 and the thump was completely eliminated and changeover dead quiet but it made the T-R delay about a second long. (with Menu T-R set to 0). I next tried a .047 and that seemed to do the trick. I could still hear a very slight quiet poof at changeover and the T-R delay is slightly longer than before with the thump but still very acceptable. About the equivalent of setting the Menu T-R delay to 30 or 40. Definitely QSK not as fast as my K2 but I'm not sure the KX1 was ever supposed to be fast as the K2. Still something not quite right? In theory the parallel cap shouldn't be needed but at this point maybe it's a case of component tolerance/anomalies? Any other ideas? Thanks for all your help and suggestions. 73, Jerry -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX1-Please-need-help-with-T-R-thump-tp6395259p6401119.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Please need help with T/R thump
Jerry, Yes, I would look at Q7 and its associated resistor R28. That transistor should saturate and prevent Transmit RF from coming into the receiver. It sounds like it is not working right and the receiver saturates during transmit and takes too long to recover. What you have done by increasing the value of C9 would cover up that receiver recovery period. The easiest way to check Q7 is to replace it, but make certain that Q7 base goes to at least 0.6 volts during transmit - if it does not, then look to R28 and the 6T-2 voltage supply to it, which should be about 6 volts during transmit and zero during receive. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/24/2011 9:55 PM, Jerry W7ANM wrote: Thanks for your thoughts Don. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Please need help with T/R thump
Thanks Don, Maybe were getting somewhere. Q7s base is at zero during receive but on transmit it only goes to 0.1v. The 6T_2 voltage on the other side of R28 goes from 0v during receive then to 5.63v on transmit. (Normal?) Looks like I will need to get another Q7?
