Re: [Elecraft] ssb audio

2011-08-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

Does your microphone need bias turned on? If so, check the MIC SEL
parameters in the main menu. The fact that you cannot hear from the
monitor makes me suspicious about your MIC SEL settings - do you have
MIC SEL set to the proper (front or rear) mic jack?

Use the metering on the K3 as your first indication of correct audio.
Set TX TEST on so you do not bother other hams.
Then set compression to 0, and observe the ALC indicator as you talk
into the mic. Adjust the Mic gain until you get between 5 and 7 bars on
the ALC meter.
Once you have accomplished that, add compression as desired.
If you have all that correct, exit from TX TEST and you should be able
to transmit a good SSB signal.

[Elecraft] ssb audio

2011-08-29 Thread km5ps
Hello all-
I usually only work cw but heard a station from Australia tonite on
15 meters ssb. Tried to work him but was not getting any pwr out using
ssb. Thought it was my mic on my headset, so I switched to my elecraft
mic and still no pwr out. The xmit light comes on on k3 and I do have
the vox on. But not putting any pwr out on external pwr meter or on
radio's pwr meter. I also can not hear my voice back in speaker even
when I adjust the Monitor settings. The ssb has worked in the past, but
I have not used it since Field Day. Maybe I forgot how to use ssb on
this Rig. I have tried this out on 15,10, and 40 meters. All the
same. I have also went into the k3 utility program to double check that
I still have the filters config set right and it is. So really don't
know now. At least cw still works. HI HI ... Any suggestions?? PWR
out of radio should be 100w..

[Elecraft] Puzzler: Where does this part belong???

2011-08-29 Thread Guy
After a recent /p trip in Oregon, I noticed a "rattling" noise inside my
K2/10. I took off the K2 top and found a TO-220 sized transistor completely
loose. It is market "NTE104F and NTE2374LF" . It was soldered but broke
off cleanly at the points where it inserts into the PCB. I can't find any
obvious "home" for it on the main or controller board PCBs. And a search of
the manual doesn't cross-reference these markings.

Still looking but maybe someone on this list can point me in the right
direction.

Thanks in advance, Guy/N7UN

[Elecraft] [K3] ARI-500/K3/MARS Frequencies

2011-08-29 Thread Steven Pituch
Hi All,
I would like to use the Ameritron ARI 500 with my ALS 600 and K3 to
automatically switch the ALS 600 to the correct band. I know this will work
for the ham bands but wonder if it will work for the frequencies between the
ham bands for MARS work. The ALS 600 uses the following band edges: 160M
(1.5-2.3), 80M (2.3-4.4), 40M (4.4-8.0), 20M (8.0-14.5) etc. I am wondering
if the K3 uses the same band edges. For example if I operate on 2.4 MHz
will the K3 send the BCD output to the ARI 500 for 80 Meters, or possibly
160 meters So I guess what I am asking is whether anyone knows the defined
band edges for the K3 that go out the BAND (0-3) pins of the accessory
connector. Thanks in advance.

Also wondering how the 60 meter band data affects the ARI 500, since the ALS
600 does not have a 60 meter position. Does the ARI 500 pick the 40 meter
or 80 meter position for the ALS 600, when the K3 is used.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KAT100-2 + KPA100 shopping list

2011-08-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Wayne,

All that is correct EXCEPT - add to the list if your "multimeter" (which
is hopefully actually a DMM) does not have it included - a means of
measuring current draw to at least 2 amps. Many DMMs have a 10 Amp
range, so that is usable. It is needed to properly set the bias on the
KPA100.

An accurate wattmeter capable of 100 to 200 watts is handy to use, but
the DL1 will do if you calibrate the KPA100 wattmeter using the QRP
levels (up to 15 watts). I usually calibrate the wattmeter first at 10
watts, and then check it at 80 watts (my wattmeter is calibrated at 80
watts). There is little difference once you have calibrated it at 10
watts, but if you want maximum accuracy at high power, you will need the
higher power wattmeter.

It's time to get 100W for my K2. I like the idea of having the 100W amp
and tuner in a separate box so I can go portable by just disconnecting
the transceiver and taking it with me, without having to switch tops.
Here's my shopping list

KPA100 K2/100 Internal Integration Kit
KAT100-2100W ATU with EC2 panels
EC2 K2 Blank Project Enclosure
ETS2Standard Tilt Stand for the EC2
KIO2K2 AUX I/O RS-232 Interface

Is that everything I need to order?

The manuals appear to indicate that I can complete assembly and
calibration with multimeter; my DL-1 (20W dummy load), which I can use
as a 20W wattmeter; and a 100W dummy load I can borrow from dad. Is
that correct?

Hello dear Gene and Hello all,
yes you are right I will post here what I will order finally that maybe
others with similar interests can see.
I will mainly use that K3 on 144MHz with a transverter in EME and
meteorscatter as well on 2m contest.
Further more I will use it very seldom on short wave/6m and I'm not a CW
operator.
So the list maybe different to others with other interests.
_My personal final configuration is:_
K3/100-F
KA3T-F
KBPF3
KDVR3
KFL3A-2.8-2.7sw
KFL3B-FM
KTCXO3-1
KXV3A
K3STFNR
For transverter my choice is the HA1YA ME2HT-PRO Link:

Re: [Elecraft] using P3 and Skimmer

2011-08-29 Thread Larry Phipps
Correct Jack. Just a couple additional comments...

LP-PAN has more than enough isolation, but we recommend the optional
preamp (mounts inside LP-PAN) to overcome the total losses of the K3
buffer and the hybrid splitter in the P3.

FWIW, I have measured the isolation of the P3 splitter, and it is
considerably lower than 30dB. If using a SoftRock, I would consider it
imperative to use a Z1 or similar buffer. It would also make sense
to use one of your low noise preamps ahead of the Z1 if weak signal
decoding in CW Skimmer is important. I would set the gain of the preamp
at about 10dB, and the buffer at about 0dB.

[Elecraft] KX3 battery life question...

2011-08-29 Thread Dave KK7SS
Erik,

I laughed as I read your email... you could have been writing about me
Although "at my age" I tend to prefer public camping areas...
If I'm lucky, they'll have a table of sorts..

Thanks for the laugh :)

Quote:
" At my age I am not comfortable setting up the radio on the
ground, or sitting on the ground. I will find a rock or fallen tree to sit
on. If I am lucky, there is another such surface nearby that can serve as
operating table. If not, I will hold the radio in one hand. An external
tuner or external paddles would be unacceptable - not enough hands. If an
"operating table" is available, only one box can be balanced on top of it.
Connect two items together with a cord on top of the "table", and one item
will be on a slope and start sliding down. Also, the pull of the earphone
cord or antenna feedline will cause one of the items to slide down. Once one
item slides, the rest will follow"

Re: [Elecraft] Preferred upgrade sequence

2011-08-29 Thread ke9uw
The general assembly manual shows the KXVA3 installed well before the KPA3.
You might try it that way.

Friends, My old Mac G5 system died (RIP, sigh). So I took my KX3 funds and
upgraded my system. (What the heck was he thinking!? ...says Peanut). Took a
couple hiking friends up Mt Herman to play radio and compare a couple
portable antennas. The K2's A/B selection made it easy to see which antenna
was hearing best! Results were they both were about the same but at
different times. Conclusion was location, location, location is the best
antenna. Says, Rooster

Re: [Elecraft] using P3 and Skimmer

2011-08-29 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
One is enough. If skimmer is really needed, and you want the panadapter and
the ability to drive various programs, you get LP-Pan instead of a P3.

A P3 was made so someone with ONLY a K3 and a P3, WITHOUT a PC, could have a
panadapter. The P3 was not designed as a do-all for all things SDR.
Elecraft may get around to some add-ons, like IQ output from a P3 or some
such, but those are business decisions. A K3 had a very clear, specific
intention to begin with, which it brought to life very nicely.

73, Guy.
