Hi Jack,

I thought that HF RTTY newsfeeds were gone long ago. Is there much activity
like what you copied these days? And my more curious question, who are such
broadcasts intended for? I used to like listening to the BBC voice
broadcasts on HF but I think they shut them down. Is there much interesting
on HF these days to listen to or decode?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Power Meter

2011-10-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Rich,

Let me echo what Bill NR4C told you - that information has been posted
several times by Lyle Johnson (the DSP designer).
Power "creep" when using digital modes is the usual result of attempting
to use the much publicized 'set the transceiver power to max and adjust
the audio to bring the power to the chosen level'. That works for
transceivers that control power by controlling the drive to the PA stages.

The K3 does not control power that way - it measures the actual power
output from the PA stages and then attempts to adjust the drive to
produce whatever power level you have chosen.

The way to adjust the K3 audio drive is to set the audio input level
(using either the K3 Line-in gain (or Mic gain) or the soundcard output
setting (or a combination of both) to produce a full 4 bars on the ALC
meter with the 5th bar flickering. You can (and should) make that
adjustment in TX TEST mode so you do not disturb your fellow hams.

After making that adjustment, set the Power knob for the power level
desired.

Re: [Elecraft] 12m SWR issues

2011-10-05 Thread VK7JB
Hi Mike,

Do you have the KAT3 installed? If so, the "fix" may be simple: take the
ATU out of bypass mode and tune the ATU into the dummy load once on each
band. You might then find that with the ATU bypassed, the SWR shown on the
K3 meter reads 1.0 as you'd expect.

I noticed the same on 10 & 12m some time ago on my new K3. I learnt that
the ATU is not physically removed from the circuit in bypass mode, but small
values of L & C are inserted to electrically / functionally "bypass" it.
Stray reactances can cause these small SWR anomolies on the higher bands,
seen when transmitting into a dummy load with the ATU bypassed. It seemed
to me that the ATU can compensate for these reactances if it's tuned once
into a 50ohm dummy load on the band of interest - that seems to allow the K3
set the bypass state correctly, compensating for the small strays.

At least, it worked for me and a couple of others who'd noticed the same
thing and who found this worked for them. I received a few pm's about this
after I posted about this to the group some while ago - I guess it will
still be in the archive.

Hope that helps,

73,
John

When you reply to an email reflector, there is no need to send a copy to
someone who is on that list. In fact, it is a nuisance to get two
copies of the same email.

My email server is protected by "challenge and response" anti-spam

I had on the shelf, put a new connector (from Radio Shack) on it and gave it

Not a hand mic, but the mic on the Yamaha CM500 headset would work VERY
well with a K2. The K2 is low on audio gain, and the CM500 is a pretty
hot mic, so it will compensate.

See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf for guidance in
connecting it. You will need to buy a mic plug, 1/8-in jack, and a
small resistor of 4.7K-6.8K to make a simple adapter. You want to find
a resistor small enough to fit in the mic connector. And you will need
to consult the K2 schematic to see which pin is audio in and which pin
is +8VDC.

Wiring is simple. The mic connects between the audio input and the
chassis (shell). The resistor goes between the V+ pin and the audio
input. The pdf tells you a part number for the 1/8-in jack and where to
buy it.

Not on the K3. Do Not set your power to 100 watts for PSK. Others will
answer better but set your power where you want it. 25 to 40 or so is just

[Elecraft] [K3] Is there a KRC3 in the works?

2011-10-05 Thread Larry K1UO
I believe a KRC-3 Band decoder than is fully compatible with the K3 is now
in order? :-) Its getting so that half the available Band decoders (or
more)do not support 6M or even 60 meters for that matter and those that do
lack provision for manual band selection so if something happens with the pc
or serial port one cannot even change antennas. The software and
documentation seem to have not fully caught up to use the KRC2 with a K3 and
various remote relay switch boxes.

Just thinking out loud.

[Elecraft] K3/P3 issue--no signals

Left my rig for a couple of hours this morning and when I returned, my P3 was
no longer reading band signals. It is as if it is only hearing internal rx
noise with the "grass" well below S0 and RefCal cranked up to 145 and
beyond. The K3 seems to hearing just fine. Have restarted both units,
wiggled IF cable, verified that nothing else has changed, checked P3 Menu
items etc. Searched archives. There has to be something simple here going
on. Any help very much appreciated!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Power Meter

2011-10-05 Thread nr4c
How are you setting the power level?

With most other radios, you should set power to 100 W (full power) on
the radio, and adjust the actual power level with the amount of drive
(volume) to the radio from the computer.

Not so with the K3. With the K3, you should set the drive to show 4-5
bars (on the ALC scale) indicating proper audio input level, and adjust
the power using the "PWR" control knob. I have not noticed this symptom
using this method. Note, that the first 4-5 bars indicate audio imput
lelvel, and ALC starts with the 5th Bar. Also, using the DATA Modes,
Compression and TX EQ are de-activated.

BTW, I use about 30 W for PSK, but in RTTY contest, I normally use full
100 W and monitor the PA temp. SO far, I have not gone over abut 37-39
degrees C on the PA, usually stays around 34 deg.

Enjoy

you may already be aware of all this, if so, I appologize for the band
width.

[Elecraft] K3 - Power Meter

2011-10-05 Thread rich kennedy
My setup is a simple resonant dipole, HRD/DM780 software, and a K3/100 with
latest firmware.  I often operate PSK or RTTY, using the DM780 software and
running approx 35 watts.  I've noticed that for the first couple of seconds
after I key the rig that the K3's power meter will display only 1 bar (~10w), a
few seconds later the power meter displays 2 bars, a few seconds later 3 bars,
and finally after about 6 to 8 seconds total the power bar displays 4 bars (and
never goes higher).  The SWR bar displays zero or one bar (sometimes flashes
between the two).  I'm careful not to overdrive the radio and other stations
say that the signal looks 'good'.  QUESTION: what's up with the power bar?  Is
this normal or something to be concerned about?  thanks, 73, Rich, K3VAT

[Elecraft] Florida Volunteers for K6JSS/4

2011-10-05 Thread Bob Patten
This coming Monday, Oct 10 begins Florida week for the QRP ARCI 50th
anniversary Jubilee. I've been assigned as coordinator for use of the
club call K6JSS/4 for the week. I do plan on spending a good bit of
time on CW during the week as well as participating in the ARCI Fall
Party at the end of the week. So I'm particularly looking for any FL
volunteers who can do digital modes (RTTY or PSK31) and SSB. Of course
we can also share the call on CW. Please e-mail me if interested at:

2011-10-05 Thread Mitch Wolfson DJØQN
Don,

The cable kit includes a cable that goes between the K3 and RRC box to allow
you to turn it on. Of course, you can make this cable up yourself if you
want to.

Re: [Elecraft] Spam on list

2011-10-05 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
NO

If you have your email lists on your computer and you get a virus that goes
through your outlook or similar email client, then it can send that list back
to the hacker. It can also email, either direct from your machines, or from the
hackers machine, spoofing your address.

The only way to prevent that is using anti-virus software, and even then, just
sometimes, a new virus comes out before the vendors have written the code to
defend from it.
Also, without realising it, your might authorise something when your OS asked
for confirmation, without realising you are authorising a piece of code to go
through your email.

Then there are the systems that are storing your email addresses, like Yahoo
etc, they can be hacked via someone else's account and the email addresses
harvested - or the entire system can get hacked.

I'm afraid, once your email address gets on the Internet (most do, just by
emailing a reflector), it's a safe bet you'll get spam - not necessarily that
it will get hacked - but it's simple to spoof an address.

And yes, my random sig picker, picked this!

There is no defense. At least not on your end. Anybody can use your
address as the 'from:' address. This is fundamental to how internet
email was designed back in 1982.

But where the spammers are actually using your address list, they
probably broke into your computer (or your web mail, if that's where the
address list is kept). Good security practices will certainly
help against this.

Re: [Elecraft] T32C Kirimitati Island Dxpedition

2011-10-05 Thread GW0ETF
Here my only antenna is a 100ft open wire fed doublet whose feed point is at
about 7m. T32C has only ever been very weak with me but I have managed 'em
on 17m and 30m cw with 100w. Not too many calls either though I made sure I
could always hear the qsx end, and the 2nd receiver helps.

When you do manage to hear them Dave give them a call; I'm sure they'll be
looking out for you..!
