[Elecraft] K3: SP 2 switches back to SP 1 during RX in Split
My friend Simon, HB9ATG has a strange problem: While listening in split mode, suddenly a relay clicks and the K3 switches back to mono, i.e. CONFIG:SPEAKERS 2 unexpectedly returns to SPEAKERS 1, without his transmitting or doing anything at all, just listening to the pileup. This can happen several times a day. Has anyone noticed this before? 73 de Richard - HB9ANM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 AC Power
Bill, There will be less 'light blinking' if operated on 220 volts. The answer all depends on the AC circuit. Is this a dedicated 120 volt receptacle with heavy gauge wire? Re: [Elecraft] KX3: Feedback MCU 1.36 / DSP 1.05
These items had never come to mind here, but since Paul posted this, I checked mine and echo his comments. While power is being displayed in the VFO B window, the AF/RF gain control is disabled until either the Power switch is tapped OR the AF/RF switch is tapped. Either will exit the power adjust and bring the Keyer/Mic knob back to it's normal function and the AF/RF to whichever of the two had been selected prior to setting power. Not sure if this was intended, but it can be annoying. Also not being able to exit the Tune function with either a paddle tap or a hand key tap hasn't been a problem here, but for some it might definitely be problematical, especially when using an external auto tuner. Re: [Elecraft] QSL software for Macs
MacLoggerDX, which IMHO is far and away the best logging and rig control software available for the Mac OS X platform, generates QSL cards directly from the log entries. You link it to a picture, and it lets you select several design options (e.g. print is boack or reversed out (white), and cal sign at top or bottom. It's important, for it to work well,to provide a photo that has the same proportions as the card itself. Otherwise it will stretch the image to fit, and you end up looking like something from a funhouse mirror. It's also easy to create QSL cards using any modern word processor. As a Mac user, I prefer Pages to Micro$oft Word for manipulating graphics, but YMMV. The nice thing about MacLoggerDX is that you only have to type the QSO information once -- into the program's log -- and not a second time into a separate QSL card program. See you on the net in a few minutes. Re: [Elecraft] New K3, audio (speakers) dead
Steve, The speaker and headphone outputs are driven by different audio amplifiers. To my knowledge we have never seen both amps fail simultaneously. We also test both of these boards before putting them in each kit. This sounds suspiciously like the front panel,or the DSP board, is not seated properly with its connectors. We sometimes see builders plug in the FP with the connectors mis-aligned so that some of the pins are not mated. Try removing and replacing the FP and DSP boards while carefully mating their connectors. You can leave one of the side panels off while seating the FP to visually confirm that its connectors are properly mated with the RF board. If that does not cure it, please contact k3supp...@elecraft.com and thy will be able to suggest other areas to look at. 73, Eric elecraft.com _..._ On Feb 23, 2013, at 6:59 PM, VE3RX ve3...@hotmail.com wrote: I see this had happened before, and Elecraft was supposed to have fixed any blown audio chip issues. Re: [Elecraft] K3: SP 2 switches back to SP 1 during RX in Split
I've had something similar. The cause on my K3 (SN 2887) appears to be some sort of intermittent problem in the current-sensing circuit. The K3 presumably detects excess current, assumes it is the stereo audio chip being shorted by a mono speaker (it isn't!), and switches itself to mono to protect the chip. Watch the K3's current meter: at times, mine varies wildly between 1 and N amps where N is 'several', on receive, doing nothing much at all. Right now, my K3 is reading a stable 1.10 amps. The last time this issue happened to me was about 6 months ago. The actual current draw from the supply was stable but the K3's meter was kicking around, occasionally tripping the protection circuit. It cleared up by itself for no obvious reason. I've had it a couple of times before that too. I wonder if it might be a dry joint in that area or a dodgy current-sensing chip. 73 Gary ZL2iFB -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Tom Boucher Sent: Monday, 25 February 2013 7:41 a.m. To: Reflector Posting Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] K3: SP 2 switches back to SP 1 during RX in Split Yes Richard, this has happened to my K3 several times, always when the volume is too high and a loud burst of audio occurs. 73 Tom G3OLB My friend Simon, HB9ATG has a strange problem: While listening in split mode, suddenly a relay clicks and the K3 switches back to mono, i.e. CONFIG:SPEAKERS 2 unexpectedly returns to SPEAKERS 1, without his transmitting or doing anything at all, just listening to the pileup. I use an Elecraft Hexkey paddle with a short pigstail 3,5mm female receptacle connected to it and a standard 3,5 mm male/male cable that usually delivers with PC-speakers but the factory cable works just as well... Re: [Elecraft] K1 VFO frequency does not change
Don, C2 and D3 look to be properly installed. I confirmed orientation from a 1SV149 data sheet just in case I mis-read the instructions. I can adjust receive frequency with RIT, so it looks like the D4 control is working. Since the D3 voltage is varying from 0v to 5.888v with the tuning pot, but there is no change in frequency, I'm starting to suspect a bad D3. I don't know of anyway to check it in circuit -- at least with the tools I have. I'll see if I can pick up a 1SV149 locally. Re: [Elecraft] K1 VFO frequency does not change
John, A couple of things you might try. First, use your ohm meter to check D3. It should show lower R in on direction compared to the other. It is a diode. You could perhaps try replacing it with a 1N4004 ... 1N4007 what ever you can get or have. Assuming you can't easily get the proper diode, any of these will also change the C as voltage across them changes. So you should see some change in frequency. 73 - Mike WA8BXN ---Original Message--- From: John Reed, W8DE Date: 2/24/2013 3:27:25 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K1 VFO frequency does not change Don, C2 and D3 look to be properly installed. Re: [Elecraft] K1 VFO frequency does not change
John, Yes, that would strongly indicate that D3 is faulty. It is good that you confirmed RIT does change the frequency. I don't think you will find one locally, but an email to pa...@elecraft.com should bring you one quickly in the mail. Since a bad D3 is a rarity, you might also want to check for board continuity with your DMM. Check to see that you have the same voltage variation on one lead of C2 - that will confirm that D3 is connected to C2. The other lead of C2 cannot be tested with voltage, so use your ohmmeter to check for continuity between the other lead of C2 and L1. Should you find the board has an open trace (also a real rarity), repair it with a wire. Elecraft would send you a new board, but you already have enough work in that board to warrant repairing it with a wire. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/24/2013 3:27 PM, John Reed, W8DE wrote: Don, C2 and D3 look to be properly installed. [Elecraft] Raleigh, NC hamfest
To all in the Raleigh, NC area -- Once again, there will be an Elecraft booth at the RARSfest this year. Lisa is arranging for 2 booths just as we had last year. I am asking for volunteers to help at the booth so we can give each other a break. If you want to show off some of your Elecraft gear, that would be great too. I will have my K1, K2, K3 and KX3 and several of the mini-modules. We should have a KPA500 and a KAT500 if possible. We will not be taking orders, just having a good time and interacting with those who visit the booth. So what do you get out of it? A chance to compare notes with other Elecraft owners as well as showing off the gear to potential Elecraft customers. If you do not have one already, you will get an Elecraft polo shirt with your name and call on it. and if you help set up on Friday, you can partake of the free vendors dinner. We will have free passes to the hamfest (no door prizes) for those who do not want to purchase an entry ticket. I need to get the information on the shirts (including size) to Lisa in the next couple weeks. Last minute volunteers are welcome, but they will miss out on the shirts. Please respond directly to me rather than the Elecraft list. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

John, While you are waiting for the 1SV149 to arrive, solder a 1N400x diode (X = 1 thru 7) in its place and see if you can achieve any variation in the frequency. Make certain the cathode is oriented to connect to the RP2 pin 2 and C2 junction.
