[Elecraft] K2 S-meter calibration (CW-CWRV-USB-LSB) ?

2013-07-05 Thread Behiels JeanPierre
Hi K2 builders;

I do have calibrate my S-meter following exactly what is tell in the building
manual.
I do have done this allignement CW normal mode.
What I see while switching between CW reverse and USB and LSB mode is that the
right led indication does not indicate most right on other modes ???
I see a little difference in S-meter indicaton bewteen CW normal and the 3
other modes ??
The S-meter indicaton is dropping one led from right.
The most right led indication is done with RF control fully counter clockwise
of course.
Is this normal,I do have allign my filters and BFO settings all correctly.
Yes I now,I am talking about details now,and what I see while playing with my
new toy hi.
Next days I start to build my KPA100 unit.
Great building kit for sure...

Re: [Elecraft] Noisy RX redux

2013-07-05 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Mike,

For those wondering what Mike found. There are two ways to go. A complete
DSP board swap or a DSP board modification.

K3DSPUPGD for $109.95 (this is the board swap)
or
K3DSPLPF for $39.95 (this is the board mod)

Both items can be found here:
http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm

Serial numbers might not be the best clue for those buying a previously
owned radio. The previous owner might have already made the improvement.

A friend just bought a used K3 with a slightly earlier SN, and the RX
background is very harsh and sharp sounding. We both came to Elecraft
from a PRO II/III where the background in an A/B comparison is a soft
 swhsh.

I'd like to check and see if it has the same mod, but I've slept since
then and cannot remember what the mod was called, or how to check for
it. A tour of the mods page didn't kick my recaller into gear.

A related wish: List the serial number when a mod goes into production.

 n unrelated wish: HAPPY 4th!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Receive Noise

2013-07-05 Thread kg4olw
Try going into the menu and turning on the RX I/Q out. I noticed on my kx3
with the latest firmware, there is a sharp hum and audio distortion while
the RX I/Q out is disabled. The noise is so piercing I can't use headphones
with it. Turning on the RX I/Q instantly kills the unwanted receiver noise.

You only have to remove the front panel *assembly* to be able to see the

Re: [Elecraft] K2 S-meter calibration (CW-CWRV-USB-LSB) ?

2013-07-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jean,

You can adjust the CAL S HI menu in CW reverse or LSB or USB to
compensate for that discrepancy.
If you have a signal generator that produces a 50 microvolt (-73 dBm)
signal, use that to adjust the CAL S-HI menu parameter.

[Elecraft] K1 TX output low on 2 of 4 bands

2013-07-05 Thread David Ek
My K1 (#1066, built 11 years ago) is a four-bander with ATU and internal
battery pack. In May I built an Elecraft W1 wattmeter and used it to
discover that my TX output (When Out in the menu is set to 7.0W) is
only 1.2W on 15 meters. At that time, all other bands showed an output
of 5W.

However, last night, after an afternoon of using my K1 while fruitlessly
trying to tune up a new antenna, I noticed that the output on 20 meters
was also now down, measuring 1.5W. I strongly suspect that a component
failed due to TX'ing into high SWR while trying to adjust the antenna I
was working on. 40 and 30 meters still seem to be okay. (My guess is
that 15 is low for the same reason--I just didn't discover it in a
timely fashion like I did with 20 meters).

So, anybody have a suggestion for where to start with troubleshooting?
Should I suspect the filter board? Any components in particular?

Thanks in advance for any morsels of wisdom -

2013-07-05 Thread Mike Morrow
Dave/NK0E wrote:

What power supply were you using when you measured the output power
that you report below?

In May I built an Elecraft W1 wattmeter and used it to discover that my
TX output (When Out in the menu is set to 7.0W) is only 1.2W on 15
meters. At that time, all other bands showed an output of 5W.

was also now down, measuring 1.5W.

I strongly suspect that a component failed due to TX'ing into high
SWR while trying to adjust the antenna I was working on.

This is extremely unlikely. Any RF board component failure would affect
all four bands, not just 20m and 15m. During use of a very poor antenna
load, the most common result is shorting of the RF board D19 Zener that
is across the RF-Q7 PA transistor, which is what D19 is designed to do to
protect RF-Q7 (and usually destroy itself in the process). This definitely
has NOT happened to your K1. Rest assured then that nothing was hurt
on your K1 during your antenna tuning efforts.

When some bands still function well, but others do not, it is a certainty
that the problem is on the filter board.

You have an older K1, and possibly an early KFL1-4 filter board. The
16 trimmer capacitors that are on the KFL1-4 were originally white-body
capacitors that were very prone to spontaneously changing their effective
value. A couple of years after the KFL1-4 was introduced, Elecraft changed
all 16 trimmers to a much more stable design with a light blue body.

Look at the four rows of trimmer capacitors on your KFL1-4, which are
easily observed from the back of the K1 even without removing the KAT1.
If they they do not have light blue plastic bodies, then you have the
old troublesome original trimmers in place. You'll need to get the
replacement trimmers and install them. Those are almost certainly
the source of your problems.

OTOH, if you have the newer blue-body trimmers, you will still want
to re-align your KFL1-4 to restore full output. In fact, you'll
want to do that if you have white trimmers, just to verify that
output can be restored in the interim before change out.

When I still had those old trimmers on mine, I needed to re-peak 15m
and 20m on my KFL1-4 every few months due to the drop in output power
I observed. So did a lot of other people. After such results, Elecraft
supplied a set of 16 blue-body replacements. It was *not* a lot of fun
removing 16 trimmers and replacing them, but it was worth it. I
recently re-peaked my KFL1-4 after more than eight years since last
performed, and found essentially no pre-peaking degradation.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Antenna Tolerance

2013-07-05 Thread Ingo Meyer, DK3RED

Hello Tom,

I've just finished my K2 bare bones, and would like to get on the air. What
SWR will the finals tolerate without harm? I'm using a ground mounted trap
vertical

I have used my old K2 (#01118, modified for 5 watts output) also without an antenna, but
without deletions of the finals, so the SWR was infinite. But if you use the upper output
limit of your K2 this operation mode could be deadly.

[Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-05 Thread Bill Hammond
This is a bit off topic but perhaps other P3 users on this reflector have
encountered this RFI and have some idea where it comes from and perhaps a
remedy? There must be a couple of thousand P3 users on this reflector.
The below is a recording and includes sound of this nasty bit of pulsating RF.

Video recording:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/9214448105/

It is not always there. When it is there in the 20-meter band there are
siblings almost as strong at the following frequencies:

13.975

14.032-the recording

14.126

14.220

14.282

14.469

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one is
visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in the 17
meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV looks
like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes from a
40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster of homes to
my northeast.

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-05 Thread Jim Bennett
Rick -

I put a couple big clamp-on's on the power cord. No help. The only other cable
going to that TV is a heavily shielded HDMI cable from the Denon A/V unit. From
what I understand, the RFI is generated in the plasma cell area, and not on any
cables. I may be mistaken, but I believe the best way to suppress plasma TV
generated RFI is with a 12-gauge shotgun. And, believe me, if (1) it was legal,
and (2) not so expensive - I'do just that to ours!!! :-) :-) And, no - don't do
that to your neighbor's TV!!

Actually, that Samsung TV gets little use these days. Our main TV is a 65
Panasonic Viera plasma set that surprisingly generates no RFI crud.

The plasmas were not really 'outlawed' - but California made sales there a

is usually vastly superior to the LCD sets, even those with LED backlights.

Otherwise it’s a great TV, great picture.
I have tried several things but only thing that has helped, especially on 20

In the UK there has been a great deal of interference caused by plasma screens.
The QRM is radiated by the screen and gets worse with age as the power to the
backlight increases to compensate for reducing emissivity.   Recently
Panasonic, the main culprit, have been replacing plasmas with their latest LCD
model that have much better pictures and no rfi.  Current LCD models now have
much improved performance and have better pictures that the plasmas that are
now being phased out.

A campaign has been waged by concerned amateurs and details can be found at

The biggest issue is that the RF is generated in the plasma display itself and
it is radiated directly through the screen (which is transparent to RF).

One way to find out how much the roof is affecting the performance of a beam
is to look at SWR changes as the antenna is rotating.

SWR is a pretty coarse indication of interaction. Interactions can
change directional antenna F/B and F/S ratio by 6-10 db easily (assuming
you have it in the first place) and hardly affect SWR.

At least, this is my experience from antenna modeling.

However, we have to live with the hands we're dealt. Without any field
strength measurements or calculations, one probably won't detect much.

Ignorance is bliss.

[Elecraft] K3 es AIRMAIL

2013-07-05 Thread WO0W
I've been told that the application AIRMAIL does notinterface the
Elecraft to control frequency and transmission. A recent version of
AIRMAIL, v 3.4.062, lists the K2 and K3 in the setup menu. I'd like a
report of the experience of any who have tried interfacing a K3 to this
version of AIRMAIL and using the rig control function. 73 de Red, WOXW

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-05 Thread Tom H Childers

Contact Panasonic and remind them that the TV was certified as Part
15 compliant, and that if they cannot fix it you will contact the FCC
and report their failure to maintain part 15 compliance.

That's about the only thing you can do unless it is new and is still
under the 30 day return limit.

Plasma TV's and their manufacturers are evil.

Bill,
I have a 50 inch Panasonic plasma and when it is on, lower bands 40 meters and
below are near useless.
It causes some problems for me on 20 meters and up but it gets less as the
bands go up.
My P3 display is similar to yours.
Otherwise it’s a great TV, great picture.
I have tried several things but only thing that has helped, especially on 20
meters and above is to move ham antenna further away from my house. As best I
can tell RFI comes from the screen and not the cables or the power cable.
If anyone finds a better solution, other than shotgun or not using it, please
let me know. 73 good luck Emory WM3M

[Elecraft] Custom 700 Hz 8-Pole INRAD Filters--You Should Get in Queue!

2013-07-05 Thread David and Dianne on Comcast

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased and installed the 700 Hz
Custom INRAD filter from Gary-KI4GGX of
www.unpcbs.com. In the nearly two weeks that I
have had this filter installed in my K3, it has
become my primary CW filter for this rig.

I am not a contester but rather a search and
pounce DXer for many years now (35+). My first
rig as a novice was a Heath HW-8 in 1977. It was a
QRP CW rig running 2-3w CW with an audio filter at
750Kz. I worked 38 countries with a dipole with
that rig. It taught me to learn to listen for CW
DX using a broad filter bandwidth compared to most
of the standard bandwidths used these days.

I have been using an INRAD 8 pole 500 Hz CW filter
in my K3 since I got it in 2008. But I had been
thinking about Gary's 700 Hz filter for a while
now and I finally decided to take the plunge two
weeks ago.

For me this had turned out to be the perfect CW
filter. I find myself using it exclusively now in
all but the very most difficult situations.
(Remember I do not contest.) It allows me to
cruise the CW bands from a wider perspective
helping me to gain a more macro-orientation to
what's on the CW bands and making me use my brain
more to differentiate between the CW signals I
hear. It's a very comfortable filter to listen to.

For me this filter is a keeper here for sure.

As for Gary and unpcbs, both remind me of an
extension of Elecraft. Excellent quality product
with superior service on top of that.

If you are thinking of pre-ordering with Gary for
an upcoming INRAD Customer 700 Hz filter batch, I
can highly recommend that you do so.

I really like this filter.

My $.02

Re: [Elecraft] K3 es AIRMAIL

2013-07-05 Thread Tom H Childers
NAVMARCORMARS (Navy Marine Corps MARS) uses RMS Express with Winmor
for MARS message traffic. It works very well on HF AND Winmor
TelNet.

I use it with a K3 with NO problems. It supports K3 interfacing for
rig control. If HF communications are poor due to solar storms,
etc., it can be used to send messages via TelNet.

This note is for the log/web manager.

I note that each time somebody comments on a thread ( the recent ones on metal
roof), a new email is sent to all recipients. This is a nuisance cluttering the
inbox.
My experience with blogs is all comments are retained on the server Under one
heading, and an email is sent daily to anybody interested in that subject upon
request.
Hope something could be done about that.
