Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?
I have that flag pole and use the KAT500 to tune it. I've used several other tuners in the past too, mostly old remote military models. Power offers no issues... if the antenna tunes at 5 or 100 watts, it will tune at 500 watts. One thing I always do (at least I've learned something important from this) is to plot the Real and Imaginary part of the antenna as a function of frequency...that the tuner will see (either remote at the antenna or in the radio house). You can do that with a simple impedance bridge. Then I plot the transfer function to 50 ohms real and overlay the transfer function space of the tuner. That easily tells you where the tuner will have trouble matching the antenna and where it (theoretically) will work just fine. This will answer all of your questions. It may also tell you where you need work on your antenna (e.g. If you plot the impedance of the antenna as you lay radials, it will asymptotically approach a limiting value with infinite radials. When you don't see it move, more radials probably isn't worth the extra work). Dr. William J. I've moved into an HOA zone and will be putting up a Zero-Five 30 foot flag pole and looking to get a tuner as I have an Acom-1011 Amp (want to switch to the KPA-500). [Elecraft] New guy + two KX3 tips
Hi all, Built my KX3 yesterday, and I have to say I'm really impressed. Well done, Elecraft. The clarity of the build instructions, the photographs, and all the tips and caveats for each step were very helpful. I think I'll be even more impressed once I can find a BNC-SO239 adapter so I can put an antenna on it ;-) The main thing that I ran into trouble with was sorting out the lengths of the tiny screws. which brings me to my first tip for the next guy who runs into the same thing: if you get to the step where you're trying to attach the screws and bolts to Q6 and Q7 (page 28 in my book), and you find the screws that you have aren't long enough to catch the bolts, or they just barely do, then you've put the wrong screws in your heat sink. The short ones you're trying to put in for Q6 and Q7 belong to your heat sink, and the long ones you've put in your heat sink belong to Q6 and Q7. (Incidentally, the only thing I'd suggest doing differently for this kit would be segregating parts by type; e.g., all the #2 lock washers in one packet, the #4s in another, etc.; that way, someone like me who has trouble discerning lengths of screws can start out by putting the parts in individual trays (I think those weekly pill reminder things might work well for this) and then have a little more certainty that a part is the right one. It's a very minor nit, and one that obviously didn't stop me.) My other tip is more of a temporary, non-technical one: our Walgreens (Northern California) had four-packs of 2400mAh Duracell NiMH batteries on sale today for $11. You can tell the 2400's vs the 2000's by the AA being written in green lettering instead of orange. Funnily, they're also selling 2000's for $11, so it pays to look through what they have on the shelf. If you need a fresh set of batteries... I 'm being long-winded though, so I'll just say I'm pretty stoked to have a new toy to play with for now. 73, Nick / N6OL -- *N6OL* Saying something doesn't make it true. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware
Thank you, Wayne. The APF - 1Hz tuning glitch was the last little nuisance on my list for the way I operate the KX3. Certainly not a major flaw. More of a minor inconvenience. Seeing it addressed is unlike anything I've experienced as a consumer. The technology company where I used to work chose for their motto: Flawless execution - continuous improvement. Many of us realized that this was nonsense - if you truly have flawless execution, continuous improvement would not be necessary. Few, if any, designs are flawless - even those from Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?
Javier, Here's some additional info for you to my first post. A lot of great info can be found here regarding the antenna design you are considering: http://www.sgcworld.com/technicalInfoPage.html If the tuner is at the radio and the output from the tuner is coax (such as a built in tuner in the K3) the tuner is tuning the coax and not the antenna. It will make the rig happy and isn't that what we mostly are looking for anyway? But the main problem is how do we get the most transfer of power between the coax and the antenna? A schematic circuit of any antenna is a resister, inductor and capacitor in series. By adjusting the capacitance or the inductance we can try to arrive at 50 Ohms to match to coax. That's what a remote tuner is trying to do by adding capacitors and coils into the circuit. Once the match is found, then the rig output, coax, and antenna are all 50 ohms giving us the maximum transfer of power so it is not burnt up as heat in the coax. A remote tuner tunes the antenna and the coax is effectively flat SWR from the rig to the tuner. One problem I have found is that coax should NEVER be used at the output of a remote tuner (BUT we all do it don't we, even I do on occasion)! From the remote tuner to the antenna it is all antenna and it is all radiating. West Marine sells a product called high voltage wire, it is 10 or 12 gauge, stranded and tinned, covered with a white PVC. It is not cheap but it is a really good product. Sometimes a remote tuner will tune with a short coax at the output, but it won't be happy and you will find that the tuner will hunt for a solution. One other issue folks sometimes have is trying to tune the vertical when it is too short for the tuner. Ideally you need to be 42-43 feet to work 80-10 meters. If you want to sometimes get on 160, then you need to be closer to 55 feet at a minimum, but then you are compromised at 10-6 meters. Not because the antenna won't tune the longer vertical but because angle of take off is too high. If you try to tune an antenna which is too short, the voltages at the relays can be very high, causing arching and burning of relay contacts. One way around this is to tune at a very low output, then raise power once the relays have set where they need to be. Be careful to not vary too far in frequency however! Another solution is to add in inductance by jumpering in a coil when you want to work the lower bands. There are numerous articles in QST about getting a 42 foot vertical onto 160 meters. Remember: a properly grounded vertical antenna is only about 25-30 ohms. So right off the bat you have a 2:1 mismatch. I also do not use an UNUN or balun of any type and have not had any issues. Again, you need a VERY GOOD GROUND. I know for the real antenna gurus out there everything I have stated is kind of simplistic and there are tons of variables and best solutions per application. [Elecraft] OT Recent thread about avoiding spam
Within the last month, or so, there was a thread about finding an email client to avoid spam, and it talked about email clients. From about that time, I had a major email problem, and tested several email clients. To save time and space, I will say this: --I found emClient good, but the license agreement scared me away (maybe that is just me). --I found ThunderBird was the best to set up and configure. It was almost automatic. I feel it excels in that catagory . --To my surprise, I found Windows Live Mail from Windows 7 deserves consideration. Coming from Outlook Express, I thought Live Mail was not user friendly and awkward, but it actually is fine software. At first, I thought I had to log in to Live Mail at Outlook.com, but that is optional. Users only need to go to ‘accounts’ and set up an account for each of the email addresses they are now using. From then on, it seems to function as a stand alone email client. I have used it for group mailings and it works easily for that. It has some nice extras. As for spam, the jury is still out. I’m still comparing to see if one is more dependable. I just highlighted this line to see if it will be reproduced. Re: [Elecraft] Monitor Audio
The K3 MON for voice can be set to have minimum delay, in which case you hear unprocessed audio. Or, it can be set to hear the effects of EQ, CMP etc., but with some delay. The delay bothers some people. The selection is a menu-settable option. However, when you adjust MIC settings, the radio will revert to MON being the signal as it will be heard going out over the air (with delay) even if you have it set for fast MON. This is to enable you to properly adjust for the tx EQ, CMP and etc that best suits your voice and your goal (good fidelity for Rag Chewing, maximum talk power for DX pile-up busting, etc.). If your audio sounds bad when you adjust CMP, Tx Gate, Mic GAIN, etc., then you should probably consider adjusting things so that they sound like what you would like to hear at the other end of the QSO :-) Check the manual and firmware release notes for more details. 73, Lyle KK7P On my K3 #7482, when I adjust audio settings (comp, mic gain, TX gate) the monitor audio in the headphones becomes loud and distorted. Re: [Elecraft] psk31 ALC
Bill, Are you using some kind of interface box that has a soundcard built in it? If so, most of those default to mic level output. You need 20 to 100 times more audio to drive the Line IN on the K3. Check the documentation for the interface box and re-configure it for line level (or high) output. You must drive the audio input as instructed in the K3 manual, then set the power with the power knob. Following the typical advice on the web and in some interface instructions will not work properly with the K3 - I am speaking of the often repeated advice to run the rig power full and use the audio level to control the power output. Ignore that for the K2, K3 and KX3 - they control the power output differently than most other transceivers. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/28/2013 4:17 PM, william wade wrote: Hello again. Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 and 30' Flag Pole Antenna Users?
John When working through your setup consider getting some 7/8 hardline to use as feed which depending on your run length to the antenna may allow you to keep the KAT500 in the shack with acceptable loss. You'll still need some coax jumpers to get from the hardline to the rig inside the house so you'll need to calculate and add that loss along with the little bit at the antenna. Any of the online loss calculators will give you the answers. Use 10:1 as the max SWR estimate at the antenna to calculate the feedline loss since the KAT500 can't tune more than that anyway. Here's some examples: @10:1, LDF5-50, 3.5Mhz, 100ft yields a total loss of 0.32db. Same for 28Mhz yields 0.86db. http://www.arrg.us/pages/Loss-Calc.htm Such hardline is readily available at much less than new prices if you buy used. I paid a bit over $1/ft for mine if you're luck you might even find it free. Connectors are pricey but since you only need two, no big deal. The tradeoff is having the tuner in the shack where is it visible and usable without concerns for weather vs temperature and humidity issues outside. 73 jim ab3cv On Sun, Jul 28, 2013 at 8:24 PM, Javier Campos nm6e_...@sbcglobal.netwrote: Thanks to all for the replies.
