Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-10-10 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Well, I brought the RS35A (over 30 years old I think) and cable from the home
QTH to start substituting. First though, I cleaned the cable ends of the
offending set up and it tested at 13.8v. I plugged it into the K3 and it
fired up. Then I transmitted at low power and started getting feedback in
the audio channel and power output on the K3 showed that it was varying when
in tune. I turned off the supply and had a bite to eat. When I returned to
the shack planning on testing the voltage under power using the VFO B
display on the rig, it refused to turn on as did the keyer. I checked the
voltage at the PS terminals and it registered 0.8v DC. I took the fuse out,
cleaned it good, checked continuity, used Deoxit and still 0.8v DC. Also
confirmed that the outlet was 117v AC. Will use my old power supply
tomorrow. This power supply is two years old. Guess I'll take it home and
start reading up on troubleshooting but would love to hear ideas about what
probably went wrong and what to test for.

tnx, Gary W7TEA

Re: [Elecraft] SideKX

2013-10-10 Thread Dave
My Side KX arrived today, within minutes the side panels were replaced and
the perspex cover snapped into place.

I'll add my support for this add-on as well. Promptly dispatched after
order, arrived safely and I'm now happier to put the KX3 in with my 'stuff'
when I am away on holiday or with work, which may well be in the next couple
of weeks as there's a meeting down in Burgess Hill arranged for a couple of
weeks time and I may well now take the KX3 and a simple antenna away with me
to see how it performs.

Highly recommended if you have or are thinking of buying a KX3 with the
intention of lugging it round in suitcases and perhaps balancing it on
places where it might fall over, this option will give you peace of mind
that the knobs will be protected and the cover will keep the dust off untill
you are ready to go on the air. If you didn't know that it was an add on,
you'd think the radio was designed with the replacement panels and perspex
cover because they fit so well together.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 to Yaesu Quadra Band Data 2 question

2013-10-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

However, I have received emails from a few K3 owners saying they
indeed HAVE successfully used INPUT 2 with a second HF transceiver
but none have testified to resolving the issues Joe alludes to
below.

The Exciter 1/Antenna 1 default is a limitation of the switching in
the Quadra that is not "solvable". However, as long as one is not
trying to use the Quadra for SO2R (needs to receive on Exciter 2
whilst simultaneously transmitting or receiving on Exciter 1) that
is not a barrier.

The real issue is the single F.SET output. F.SET is connected to
the K3 "Key" input to provide a carrier for adjusting the Quadra's
automatic antenna tuner in response to pressing the F-Set button
on the Quardra control panel.

The Quadra's original design clearly included separate F.Set outputs
on the 15 pin "Band Data 2" jack - with switching done by RL7501 on
the Connector Unit board. However, when the FT-1000D and later MP
required a specific resistance to ground rather than a contact
closure to ground for the "TUNE" function, the second output was
changed to provide the resistive pull down and the relay was used
to engage F-Set rather than switch the F.Set line.

Other than the F.Set and SO2R limitations, the Quadra works just fine
with two exciters. The Band Data 2 cable schematic is *identical* to

the Band Data 1 cable documented on N0SS's web site *except* that
the DIN8/262 is replaced by a DA15P - the pin numbers are the same
on either connector.

K2ESE has developed a modification to the Quadra that resolves the
F.Set issue - if you can find it on the web. In essence the K2ESE
modification taps the internal "exciter select" line and routes it
to an external opto-isolator and relay to switch the F.Set signal
between the two exciters. Once could certainly do the same "job"
by adding an opto-isolator and rewiring RL7501 but of course that
is major surgery as opposed to routing the "exciter select" line
to an unused pin on the "Band Data 2" jack and doing the switching
externally.

Two other notes: 1) the exciter using Band Data 2 must be connected
to Input 2. This has one side effect - if the *only* exciter is using
Band Data 2, the exciter can not be used if the Quadra is turned off
(as opposed to standby). 2) the PTT inputs of the two Band Data jacks
are connected in parallel and the *unselected* input (exciter) is open
circuited. One must be careful not to transmit on the unselected
exciter (thus one imperative for switching F.Set instead of the default
parallel operation) although connecting the "Inhibit" line to the K3
and setting MENU:TX INH => HI =Inh will prevent the K3 from generating
RF if it is not selected!

Yes. Note however, there are some issues in using two exciters -
particularly the lack of switching for the TF (tuning) output from
the Quadra. There are a couple modifications on-line that add an
external relay to provide that function.

Also note that Exciter 1 (Band Data 1) and antenna 1 are automatically

Yaesu offer the CT-178 Connection cable for connecting the FT3000

on the exciter end with the appropriately wired DE15P. Similarly,
one could modify the Yaesu CT-118 cable for the FT-450/950/1200 and
Quadra by replacing the miniDIN-10 on the transceiver end with the
appropriately wired DE15P.

2013-10-10 Thread Chris Rutkowski
Hi Nick.

I've traveled with my KX3 and various accessories on a dozen or more
flights, both domestic (around the USA) and into several European
countries.

Here's a synopsis of the results and best practices derived therefrom.

1. No one has ever shown the slightest interest in the KX3 (with
internal NiMH batteries), coiled antenna wires, coils of coax, or
small bits and pieces and wires.

2. The only items that have drawn attention (once each) have been:

a. A separate battery pack (Buddistick in my case)
b. Needle nose pliers close to 7 inches.
c. A barrel connector joining the PL259s on either end of a coil of
coax (they said they couldn't see it well enough).

The seven inch tool item is a tough one because longer tools are
specifically prohibited. So measure the tool first. However, the tool
that drew attention was only six inches long, but they wanted to
measure it to make sure.

A TSA agent made a suggestion which both makes sense and has so far worked:

"If in doubt, unpack it and put it in plain view."

In other words, I now organize my packing so that the battery pack,
that suspect tool, and such are easily removed for inspection (along
with my laptop and the little bag full of liquids), and rather than
waiting for the TSA to ask, I put them in the examaination tray along
with my shoes.

Haven't raised an eyebrow since. On my last flight (3 weeks ago from
MSP to PDX) a TSA agent actually -thanked- me for putting out the
battery pack!

However, you never know about the next guy, so remember that they're
doing a job, and thank them for being careful :-)

Kevin,

Please re-check.
The pin numbers are not marked on the board or on the module.
According to the voltage chart, pin 1 is the output pin and pin 4 is
closest to U6.
If you have 13.6 volts on pin 3, you have a error somewhere - that pin
is fed from the output of the 5 volt regulator U3.

If you do a lot of AM transmit you will have a cleaner signal with
the 6K filter.

Only marginally and only so far as it applies to synthesizer phase
noise more than +/- 3 KHz from the carrier. Even then, the K3 will be
much cleaner that the typical YaeComWood up-conversion transceiver with
their 30 KHz wide 4 pole VHF filters.

cleaner signal with the 6K filter. If you only do AM receive, you can

Then I return to 28000 and 2.4:1 on K3 and 1.32:1 on external SWR meter

This continue. What I found to solve is to put K3 ATU, adjust antenna, then
turn off ATU and SWR is OK, but this is nor normal to do, right?

[Elecraft] K3 ATU tuning jumps to full power

2013-10-10 Thread Edward F. Steinfeld
I just set up a new antenna configuration of a Buddipole with a Triple Ratio
Switch Balun (TRSB). In setting up for 20m I adjusted the antenna to a 1.6:1
SWR, TRSB to 4:1. Reception was great. When I hit the ATU on my K3/100 I saw
it use about 5 watts of power then at the very end of the tuning the K3
jumped to 100 watts for a moment. I have not noticed this before. When that
happened I lost all signal from the antenna.

After checking that everything was properly connected, maybe an hour, I
tried it again. Reception was great but when I hit the auto tune the same
thing happened. Why??

I am in contact with Buddipole about this but has anyone else had the K3
jump to full power on auto tune? Have I somehow set up something wrong? I am
really green when it comes to SDR and maybe the K3 was well beyond my
current ability. I just got my license back after 40 years and so much has
changed. So I could be screwing this up but I don't know how.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 to Yaesu Quadra Band Data 2 question

2013-10-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I'd like to have my 2nd K3 control the Quadra via the Quadra's Band
Data 2 connector. I'm wondering if this is possible,

Yes. Note however, there are some issues in using two exciters -
particularly the lack of switching for the TF (tuning) output from
the Quadra. There are a couple modifications on-line that add an
external relay to provide that function.

Also note that Exciter 1 (Band Data 1) and antenna 1 are automatically
selected when the Quadra is off/bypassed. Exciter 2 will have no
antenna and the Inhibit line is forced high (no RF from Exciter 2).

if so, if anyone manufactures the needed cable to go between the K3's
accessory connector and the Quadra's Band Data 2 jack?

Not to my knowledge. Further, do not recall any published info on
wiring such a cable - it was not included in N0SS's work - although
one could derive the information from the Quadra Service Manual or
the general interfacing documentation at VA7OJ/AB4OJ's Quadra web
site.

Yaesu offer the CT-178 Connection cable for connecting the FT3000
to the Quadra. One could modify that cable by replacing the DA15P
on the exciter end with the appropriately wired DE15P. Similarly,
one could modify the Yaesu CT-118 cable for the FT-450/950/1200 and
Quadra by replacing the miniDIN-10 on the transceiver end with the
appropriately wired DE15P.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Roofing filters

2013-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

The roofing filters protect the A to D converter input from strong
adjacent signals, so choose your CW filter according to your operating
habits. If you do CW contesting or DXing in pileup situations, you will
want a narrow filter.

If you are using the K3 as an SWL receiver, you would want either the 13
kHz or the 6 kHz roofing filter installed. The DSP audio bandpass will
go out to about 4 kHz, so if you want full fidelity, choose the 13 kHz
filter for that - AM bandwidth is double the audio bandwidth.

The DSP width is displayed as the audio passband, the roofing filter is
at the IF, so for AM double the audio bandwidth.

board, but I wanted to know if I'd be as well to get the AM (6kHz) roofing
filter as well - or could I dial out beyond the stock 2.7 kHz?

My usual mode is CW, so I know I'd want a narrow filter to help with -
although I realise that the DSP does the filtering, the xtal filters provide
roofing.

Correct. If you operate mostly CW, you may be wasting money getting wider
filters than the stock 2.7 kHz...you definitely need a 500 Hz or lower
filter for CW to prevent blocking in the presence of strong (S9+20) signals.

[Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 L-mix-R problem

2013-10-10 Thread Brian Machesney
Suddenly, I can't hear the sub-receiver in the right headphone unless I use
the "Ab-b" option on the "L-MIX-R" menu item. (FYI, the "b-Ab" option also
does not work.) I used the "A-b" option for years. Any clues as to what I
may have inadvertently changed to cause this?

Mine arrived this morning, well packed and easy to fit. A quality product that
matches the Elecraft perfectly.

In use now for 4 months on my rucksack-friendly portable shack (pics at qrz

Field-tested on over 60 SOTA activations (not all of these summits were
grassy hills only...).
Fully satisfied, highly recommended!
