[Elecraft] K2 first power on test without relays

2013-11-28 Thread wt5y

My k2 is almost ready for its initial power on test.  Studying the schematics I
think its safe to do so before installing relays as I have not ordered those
yet, any reason it wont work?.  Also won't have 1n5871 sb530 yet either.  I
realize preatt bands and other switches won't work yet.  And the diode was
reverse polarity protection for battery input.  My plan was to install relays
as I need em.  Would wait but anxious to try out tricolor led bargraph and see
it come on

Looks like fun Phil! Nice pictures of your antenna and rig in your
article http://ad5x.com/images/Articles/Portable%20Dipole.pdf

There needs to be a KX3 Portable Operations photos page in the

Re: [Elecraft] K2 first power on test without relays

2013-11-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

John,

You will need the VFO Range select relays to get any VFO frequency that
is usable, and you need the bandpass filter relays to establish a path
through the BPF, and you will need the LPF relays to get a proper path
through the LPF. So get all the relays in before attempting any testing.

[Elecraft] KX1 Micro Manual

2013-11-28 Thread Michael Downs
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I have a new app in the Apple Store and Google
Play for the iPhone and Android. It is KX1 Micro Manual. The KX1 Micro Manual
application is intended to be a handy reference to the Elecraft KX1 Owner's
Manual which is available on the Elecraft web site.

Most of the text in the application is taken directly from the KX1 Owner's
Manual with changes in format made to accommodate the iPhone and Android Phone
architecture. Elecraft has approved the use of their copyrighted material in
this app.

In addition to the full text of the KX1 Owner's Manual, the application
includes operating instructions for the KXAT1 Automatic Antenna Tuner, KXPD1
Plug-In
Keyer Paddle, KXB30 30-Meter Adapter, and KXB3080 30 and 80 Meter Adapter.

Users may search each chapter of the Owner's Manual or the entire Owner's
Manual at once to find keywords or phrases in the text. Found text is
highlighted in yellow.

The app can be located in the Apple Store or Google Play by searching for mike
downs, ks7d

Enjoy.

[Elecraft] K3 Receiver Failure on Curacao

2013-11-28 Thread jmaass
All:

Here on Curacao, one of the members' K3 stopped receiving abruptly this
morning, after he had called a couple of times and while he was just listening.
He said it sounded like someone disconnected the antenna.

Neither the Main nor Subreceiver are hearing signals. Using Antenna 1, Antenna
2, or RX antenna inputs makes no difference.

The P3 display reflects changing the changing frequency (in digits, at top)
with the VFOs, but the noise pattern displayed does not change.

We've eliminated everything outside of the radio in the RF path as a cause. He
went through the troubleshooting section of the manual. No Joy.

This radio was carried down for the contest, and has only been here for 2
weeks in our air-conditioned shack. No danger of salt air contamination, which
over time has bad effects on radios here!

Is there a reset defaults command to return the radio to a known pristine
state, lest some parameter have been changed inadvertently? He reportedly
needed such a command for his P3 before travelling to Curacao last week.

Thanks for any guidence. He'd rather not pack it up for travel back to the
States yet!

(BTW, the PJ2T Multi-Multi operation this past weekend in CQWW CW was an
all-K3 affair, with five stations. No failures, no problems, and the largest
CQWW CW score ever for us! We appear to be second or third Worldwide
Multi-Multi.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Failure on Curacao

2013-11-28 Thread jkhooper
Jeff,

The K3 Manual describes a process to force a firmware download if you
accidentally load an old or incompatible firmware version and find the K3
unresponsive, and you might try that. Page 45 of the manual which you could
download from the Elecraft web site.

1. Unplug from the power supply and wait 5 seconds
2. Plug back in
3. HOLD the K3s power switch in and after about 10 seconds you'll see the TX
LED flash
4. Load the correct firmware version

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Failure on Curacao

2013-11-28 Thread Dick Dievendorff
There is a parameter initialization (EEINIT) procedure in the K3 owners manual.
You will want to save the configuration first, because it resets all
calibration and configuration, and you will need to be able to repeat all that
or restore the configuration.

I presume you have a K3 Utility and access to the owners manual and a working
PC connection to the radio.

Reloading firmware might or might not help, and is less disruptive.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Failure on Curacao

2013-11-28 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
Although you got plenty of replies concerning possible firmware problems,
your symptoms sound a lot like what happened to one of my K3s recently that
in the end turned out to be a faulty KXV3, the so-called Transverter
Interface that also supports the RX ANT I/O and the I/F OUT.

If you have a sub-rx with a dedicated input (the AUX RF BNC connector
beneath the ANT2 SO239), try connecting an antenna to it and see if the
sub-rx works. That connector bypasses the KXV3 whereas ANT1, ANT2 and RX
ANT IN all go through it. In my case, that showed that the sub-rx and lots
of the firmware was working, suggesting (but not proving) that the main rx
was simply antenna-starved.

If that is what you see, consider swapping in a KXV3 or KXV3A board from
one of the other K3s on site. It is not a trivial amount of
disassembly/reassembly of two K3s, but the manuals are downloadable and
good. If the dead K3 works with the other KXV3, then you know what you
need.

27W from my K3 gives me 500W out of the KPA500 on 10m. That's ~13dB.
If your KX3 delivers 10W, you should see ~200W out.

gain[dB] = 10*log[P1/P0]

P1 = P0*10^[gain/10]

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and KPA-500

2013-11-28 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KPA500 provides between 12 to 14 dB gain depending on the amp and the
band.

FCC rule 97.317(a)(2) limits the gain of FCC-certified commercially sold
amplifiers for the amateur market to 15 dB of gain.

My KPA500 has about 12 dB of gain on 20 meters and about 13.5 dB of gain on
10 meters.

At 12 dB, on 20 meters, my amp requires 31 watts of K3 exciter power to
deliver 500 watts out.

As it's (pretty close to) a linear amplifier, you can scale the input and
output power linearly from that.
3.1 watts should deliver 50 watts.
6.2 watts should deliver 100 watts.
10 watts should deliver about 160 watts.

The KXPA100 has similar gain, up to its 100 watt specified maximum.
