Thanks Mike, Alan Jim

I've never noticed any audio glitches like that bulletin describes. The K3 is
enroute to Watsonville, so I'll ask them to check it.

I'm not sure if you and Alan are talking about the same thing, but if so, y'all
seem at odds.

[Elecraft] K144XV Option

2013-12-07 Thread Joel Black

Sorry if this is a duplicate post. I think I sent it from the wrong email.

I am looking at further downsizing my station and I have a question
about the K144XV transverter for the K3.

My current setup is the K3 (160 - 6 m), the P3, and an Icom ID-880H
(D-STAR). I am on D-STAR less than once per month. For that matter, I
rarely get on 2 m when I'm at home. Two meters is my to-and-from work
and my out-and-about driving band. I don't do mobile HF because it's too
much to fiddle with and I drive a company work truck (I probably
wouldn't do mobile HF unless someone else was driving). Even though I do
not get on 2 m from the house very much, I'd still like the capability
and I'm in the process of simplifying and minimizing my life. I thought
the K144XV would help with that.

What are the opinions of the K144XV? All good and bad are welcome.

Thanks,
Joel - W4JBB

On a D.L. either directly on the KPA or via the KAT I have a high SWR
on the K3 (ATU in bypass mode) as soon as the KPA is set OPER.
 I need K3 P= 60W to produce 500W into the D.L , but since the K3 SWR
is so high I don't know what power is received by the KPA. Before all
this I needed 18W to get 500W out on 80m.

With the KPA in STBY the KAT operates normally on both my antennas
 with K3 at 100W.
While still on the antenna with KAT having the C and L values found
above, as soon as I set KPA = OPER - even with K3 power set to 2W - I
see a very high SWR on both KPA and KAT, while the KPA indicates no
 current or output power.

I am confused, but probably one single fault can explain this.
 Anyone here knows?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 roofing filters

2013-12-07 Thread Mark Petiford
Re:  ... I don't know how to tell if those filters are on or not?

If all you want to do is check to be sure they are being selected properly,
skip down to the third paragraph below where it talks about FL1, FL2, and FL3.
If you want to be sure they are turned on (enabled) in the menu, then keep
reading:

Press and hold the DISP (MENU) button until the menu shows up in the main
display.  Rotate the OFS/VFO B know B knob until RX XFIL show up in the
display, then rotate the Main tuning knob to get the display to read NOR for
normal operation (filter working) or NOT INST if the filter is not installed.
Exit the menu by tapping the DISP button.  The filters may now be working, but
it may be necessary to power the KX3 down and back on to get them to work.  The
manual isn't real clear on that.

If you bought your KX3 at the same time you bought your filter module, the
filters should be installed and the required opposite sideband suppression
calibration should have already been done, even if your KX3 was a kit.  If not,
you will need to do that calibration after enabling the filters.  That
procedure is in the KXFL3 Installation and Calibration Instructions which is
available on the Elecraft website.

Once you do that, as you narrow the bandpass down using PBT I/II knob, the XFIL
display in the main display just above the PBT knob (NOT the menu display noted
above) will move from FL1 to FL2 to FL3 as you narrow the BPT down.

BTW, I don't believe the filters make a great deal of difference in what you
hear on the radio unless there is a very strong signal just outside your
current passband.  Someone who has used the radio with, and without, the
roofing filters can probably provide better experience than I can.  I have
never operated without the filters installed.

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option

2013-12-07 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ

Hello Joel,

I have the K144XV built-in tranvsverter option for the K3, and I am very pleased with
it. Here are some thoughts about it:

On the POSITIVE side, it is very stable in frequency, and allows me to operate 2m
EME without changing rigs or cables ;-)

However, it only has ONE coaxial connector on the rear of the radio, so you lose the
ability to have a separate receive input like you can on all the other bands. The
option for a 2m transverter set up is ELIMINATED when you install the K144XV. So, I
had to add a pair of coaxial relays on the back of the rig to switch the rig to
connect to my preamp and receive line on RX, or my amplifier on TX. Since it only
has 10w output maximum, I had to add a solid state intermediate amp in the TX line to
drive my 8877.

If all you want to do on 2m is use it barefoot for repeaters, or have it run through
some sort of RF-SWITCHED solid state amp, you should have not trouble. Of course, I
don't have the FM filters in mine anyway, so I couldn't use it on FM repeaters even
if I wanted to.

The only issue I have with it is that it seems to be a little off frequency on 2m,
but I am sure there must be some way to tweak just the 2m frequency. I know when I
still had the option of using the external 2m transverter ports, there was an option
for tweaking the K3 frequency to adjust for variations in the frequency of the
transverter xtals.

Hope this helps! GL and VY 73, Lance

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option

Use of the K144RFLK will provide better K144XV frequency stability.
This device locks the transverter's internal oscillator to the TCXO.

It's listed under K3 and Accessories on Elecraft's web page.

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Option

2013-12-07 Thread Jim Bennett
Hi Joel -

I did what you are considering - downsizing, sort of. I had the K3/100 and P3
combo along with an IC-207H dual band radio. I rarely ever got on 440, so I
decided to add the K3 internal 144 MHz module. As a bonus, selling the
dual-bander paid for a good part of the K144XV's price! Installation was pretty
easy, and the unit works perfectly. I have the FM filter in the K3 so I can
(and do) use the local repeaters when I get in the mood. In addition, having
CW/SSB capability on 2 meters is pretty cool. A long time ago I had a Yaesu
FT-736R and I did a little CW operating on the band, and I missed that
capability. Anyway, the K144XV puts out a max of about 10-12 watts, so unless
you've got a tower and a nice high-gain yagi on top of it, you aren't going to
be doing Worked All States or EME. I gave my 2 meter signal a little more
muscle by building the 80 watt all-mode linear amp that was designed by W6PQL
and featured in the May 2013 issue of QST. Here is a link to the amp info on
  his web site: http://www.w6pql.com/2_meter_80w_all_mode_amplifier.htm

Bottom line: a nice addition to your K3 and a way to eliminate a piece of
equipment from your desk.

Sam;
Your explanation is really good Sam, but it seems that something doesn't
follow for me.

Turn on the RIT control (tap the RIT button). Next, lower the RIT
frequency -20 Hz. (You must have CONFIG:PB CTRL in the config menu set
to .01 to move in 10 Hz steps). If your pitch is set to 500 Hz, then the
tone of the CW should now be 480 Hz. Next, turn on the APF by HOLDING
the DUAL PB button. Adjust the APF using the SHIFT Fc Knob (now APF
control). Move the APF down -20 Hz to match the CW signal. Once you have
the signal in the center of the new 480 Hz tone you should hear that the
CW signal pops up about 5 or 6 dB
Ok, I did this, first setting my pitch at 500 Hz, which actually even cut out
some ringing!  I got the station centered, etc., turned RIT down -20,
activated APF, but then the problem began.

I am not sure what the SHIFT Fc Knob is--if it is just the regular Shift-Lo

had copied from a post (or web site?) that Dusty K3WC wrote

so I have to turn the Shift knob until I see it say APF 0.46
meaning it's at 460hz or 20hz below my default pitch of 480hz

sorry I'm not as good as Dusty at explaining these things
