Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Mic Configuration
Checked my notebook, thought I had used a 1K SMD, but I had used a 5K SMD. The current draw with a short would only be 1mA and the power dissipated across the 5K SMD would be 5mW. Earlier I had said. The jumper blocks reminded me of what I did to get the bias voltage out for the mic. I took a jumper block carefully cut with my Demel Tool through the short at the top and sweated soldered a SMD 1K resistor across the terminals. It prevents an accident short of the 5V from the mic and if it is shorted it only draws 5ma with a 25mW draw on the resistor. A better choice might be a 10K and that would only draw .5ma and 2.5mW. However, I have had no problem with the 1K SMD. This was done an experiment to try a cheap computer mic (which worked fine) I went back to my Heil Mic which I prefer and does not need bias. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3: Change filter NORM presets for SSB/CW
Hello Don, many thanks for your reply! But page 12 of the owner's manual does only cover how to engange that preset and not how to set it. At the K3 these presets are user-definable per mode which I really would like to see for the KX3 too. So if anyone of the firmware developers has some minutes time for this? Kind regards! Re: [Elecraft] N1MM and keying KX3. What happens to the slashes // Solved
A way to simultaneously interface a paddle and computer to the KX3 -- The KX3 has two paddle inputs - one in the front for the KXPD3 and the other on the left end. They can independently be set to either Hand or Paddles. Yes, if you want to use the front one with anything other than the KXPD3, you will have to create an adapter. Several suggestions on how to accomplish that can be found in the archives. So you can end up with one input for the computer generated code and another for paddles. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/22/2014 4:29 PM, Jim Brown wrote: On 5/22/2014 12:51 PM, Pete Smith N4ZR wrote: I understand that the KX3 does not have the K-3's built in CW and PTT interfaces on the RS-232 port, but it is really trivial to take off the DTR and RTS lines from the RS-232 cable and through a couple of one-transistor, one-resistor interfaces to the appropriate ports Yes, I've built several of them. [Elecraft] Activity in ancient 15-meter novice band (21.1 MHz)
Thanks to the PX3 panadapter and the CQ WW CW contest, I just made my first QSO in at least three decades in the legacy 21.1 MHz U.S. Novice-license segment. I didn't expect activity to spread upward that far, but sure enough, blips appeared on the PX3 above 21.1, and I was able to make a quick QSO with WK1Q using 12 W (KX3 barefoot). This brought back a lot of memories. 21.1-21.15 was my favorite place to hang out back in the 1970s, when I was crystal-controlled on transmit, using a Heath HW-16. In those days I had a home-rolled 2-element 15-meter yogi made from 1/2-inch steel pipe and 2x4s. Must have weighed 40 pounds. Fortunately, my patient stepfather knew that getting that antenna up would keep me out of trouble (I was 15 at the time). Re: [Elecraft] Activity in ancient 15-meter novice band (21.1 MHz)
Yes, 15M was also my favorite band as a Novice. It may be ancient but it's still active, and still an official band segment for Novice/Techs (21.025-21.200 MHz). The same goes for the Novice/Tech segment of 40M (7.025-7.125). There is a lot of activity at the top end of the old Novice segment of 40M. You can often find relatively slow code CW QSOs from 7.120-7.125. Stop in and work these stations! There are many who frequent these segments. I know many FISTS and SKCC members who hang out in these areas. Some other folks are working on getting their code speed up. Not because they _have to_, but because they want to. I know a few lifetime Novices, that are active, but have no intention of upgrading. Yes, there are still Novice class licensees. The FCC does not issue new Novice (or Advanced) class licenses, but they can still be (and often are) renewed. [Elecraft] KX3 with dual whips (HF and VHF), hammock mobile
It was perfect hammock weather today, so I took the latest Jack Reacher novel and the KX3 out to the back-hard hammock. I connected both a Maldol AH-C28 10-meter whip and a Diamond SRH77CA 2-meter whip to the rig. The two antennas are just 1 apart, but this doesn't impact their performance. During a break in the action (in the book), and rocking side-to-side at about 0.5 Hz, I fired up the KX3 and found lots of activity on 10 meters. Tried a few calls, but the stations were mostly EU and Africa, and 3 watts from the internal battery wasn't quite cutting it. So I dropped down to 15 meters, using the internal ATU to tune the 10-m whip on 15. This isn't the most efficient 15-meter antenna, but there was a loud VE3 calling CQ, and I got him on the first call. That's about 2000 miles at 3 watts with a base-loaded 4' whip tuned to the wrong band. I highly recommend this sort of activity. It's a nice break from your KW and stacked monobanders. Then I dropped in on the local repeater using the internal 2-m module. If nothing else, this proves you can get away with both HF and VHF antennas on your KX3. (Maybe we should also offer hammocks as an accessory.) Anyway, the bands are open, all. Have fun! Re: [Elecraft] Activity in ancient 15-meter novice band (21.1 MHz)
Yes, 15M was also my favorite band as a Novice. Mine too...and it still is. I would never buy a multi-band HF ham rig that did not include 15m (sorry, KX1!). Yes, there are still Novice class licensees. The FCC does not issue new Novice (or Advanced) class licenses, but they can still be (and often are) renewed. That would date them as having licensed as Novice somewhere between 1976 and 2000. In 1978 the two-year **non-renewable Novice** license changed to five-year renewable, and in 2000 the FCC stopped issuing new Novice licenses. I got caught in the Novice can't renew it trap and got a Tech license by mail exam just to keep my call, until I could get to a big city federal building for its semi-annual FCC ham exams for something better. Techs had no HF privileges! [Elecraft] Antenna choices
Ok, I know that this is a topic much like the Ford vs. Chevy debates or the Android vs. Apple debates, but I do have a few questions... I am going to be acquiring a 56 foot Rohn BX tower. I already have a G5RV that I am planning on putting up (still not sure where I'm going to attach the other end of it to, One end will go on the tower.) I'm going to put up a 2m/440 vertical at some point up near the top of the tower. I keep throwing around an HF vertical or a beam. The verticals seem to cover more bands, but the beams are directional. (Would also need a rotor,.. Can a multi band yagi be tuned to a different band, or will it only work on the bands that it's designed for? I'm thinking long term and I'll probably be adding a K3/100 with a KPA500 to the mix in the next year or so... Trying to figure out what will give me the best bang for my buck, so to speak. 73, Joshua Gould K8WXA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
That is several very big questions, and enough that I suggest getting a copy of the ARRL Antenna Book and reading before spending much money. And talking to a lot of hams that already have towers. Multi-band Yagi antennas are multi-band, but not wideband. They are tuned for specific bands, like 20m or 15m. They do not work well on bands they are not designed for. A vertical on a tower might give a few dB of gain (on the bands it is designed for). A Yagi (beam) will typically give 10dB or so of gain on each band it is designed for. The G5RV works for a lot of people, but it is a compromise on many bands, and could cause problems when run with high power (500W). Since you are going to the bother of putting up a tower, I'd also put up dipoles cut for most of the lower bands and feed them from a common point. This is called a fan dipole or parallel dipole. If you'd like that pre-cut for you, I recommend Hy-Power Antenna (http://www.hypowerantenna.com/). wunder K6WRU http://observer.wunderwood.org/ On May 25, 2014, at 5:31 PM, Joshua Gould jg.k8...@gmail.com wrote: Ok, I know that this is a topic much like the Ford vs. Chevy debates or the Android vs. Apple debates, but I do have a few questions... Re: [Elecraft] Apartment/condo antenna
I have a MFJ 1622 and am on a 2nd floor apartment. It actually works quite well clamped to my balcony railing, as long as the counterpoise is run out correctly. That's actually the biggest problem with my area. It's a bit hard to hide the counterpoise since it has to go down to the ground first and vegetation around here is sparse. I've tried it in vertical position inside my balcony, and while I was still able to make some contacts on HT65, it was better with it clamped to the railing and sticking out. The MFJ might be a bit big to pass off as a flag pole though. The coil portion is about as big around as a soda can and with the whip extended the total length is around 70 long. I've heard good things about the MFJ Super Hi-Q loop antennas.. they can be mounted vertically inside the balcony area. They are bit pricey compared to the 1622 though. 73's, Dave N9PBJ On 5/25/2014 7:53 PM, David Guernsey via Elecraft wrote: I am moving to a condo on the 2nd floor of a brick and concrete building. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
Joshua, I'm going to second the suggestion that you get a copy of the antenna book. This isn't a Ford vs. Chevy debate, which is based mostly on preference. There is physics involved here. If you put an HF vertical near the top of the tower, you'll need two radials on each band you want to operate. Want to work 80? You'll need two radials 5% or so longer than an 80 meter dipole. You can't run 'em down the tower and then spread them out on the ground somehow, they'll need to be resonant, and kinda straight away from the base of the antenna. Doesn't have to be perfect, but to 30, 40 and 80 you could put up dipoles (as an inverted-V) and have less wire up in the air. Alternately, you could put up the tower and the beam, and put a vertical at ground level (so you don't need the radials). I had a multiband HF vertical most of my ham career, on the roof, and it worked well. I also had the opposite problem you report: just too many things around to do anything but put the antenna on the roof. Rig something on the tower (some sort of halyard) so it's easy to pull wires to the top, and get a bunch of wire for experimenting. Don't worry if one end of the wire is down around ten feet above ground as long as someone can't easily grab the end of the wire. Good luck, and have fun experimenting. 73 -- Lynn On 5/25/2014 5:31 PM, Joshua Gould wrote: Ok, I know that this is a topic much like the Ford vs. Chevy debates or the Android vs. Apple debates, but I do have a few questions... Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
Joshua, Multi-band yagis operate on the bands that they are designed to work on. If they worked on other bands, then all of the bands that it worked on would be listed just as all of the others. A tuner may be able to tune an antenna up on a band other than what it was designed for, but it would likely generate terrible SWR, and would therefore be very inefficient. Determine what bands you want you yagi to cover, and buy one that matches your needs. The cost of a rotor depends in large part on the size of the yagi that it will be turning. A yagi with a 14 foot boom could be turned by a very small rotor, but a yagi with a 50 foot boom will require a very large, and very expensive rotor. HTH Alan/KD7GC Alan R. Re: [Elecraft] Apartment/condo antenna
How about a 33 foot flagpole? It's a start. You could always drop a counterpoise to the ground floor. Some condo / apartment folks use Tarheel or Hi-Q mobile antennas as well. I've heard that some work well. Maybe you could put a small flag at the business end. Sorry, I don't know anything about the MFJ1622, but it sounds like it's probably small aperture. I'm not a big fan of anything with MFJ printed on it; years of experience trying them convinced me. 73, matt W6NIA un, 25 May 2014 17:53:30 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: I am moving to a condo on the 2nd floor of a brick and concrete building. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question 2 - remote power control
Nothing is bulletproof except Kevlar. Yes there are a lot of quirks but compared to the rest of the IT world, there's little to commit about. Yes it's 2014 but everything works one way or another. Just have to massagw it a bit. Try programming all of the menu items then comment lol. 73s Tom Original message From: Mike va3mw va...@portcredit.net Date: 25/05/2014 20:20 (GMT-05:00) To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question 2 - remote power control Tom got it for me. Sorry, I wasn't clear that I was using the utility already and it is clear he has had the same issues. The remote power on with the utility on a locally attached computer does work, but it is finicky. You'd think with the current age of everything be handle over rs232, that this would be bullet proof. I take it you have the KPA500 connected to a computer? Did you download the KPA500 software from the Elecraft web site? This allows complete monitoring and on/off operation. 73 de Jim - KE8G Sent from my iPad On May 25, 2014, at 4:37 PM, Michael Walker va...@portcredit.net wrote: I have just installed my KPA500 on my remote base and I noticed that it is possible to turn it off via the computer or via just dropping the AC power and not getting it to come back on. This makes is sort of a challenge for remote operating. Is this normal operation or did I miss something obvious. 73 all Mike va3mw __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to k...@cox.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to tom...@videotron.ca __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Antenna choices
The problem with any wire antennas, (as you can see on this map https://goo.gl/maps/MFdXQ) is a complete lack of places to attach the ends of the dipole to... I don't see a problem with that property. A single tower or a pole will support the center of any number of inverted vees. The ends can go to screw anchors in the ground. It would be handy to have other supports, but what you have there is way better than most. You could put up anything up to 160 meters with that kind of room.
