Re: [Elecraft] KX3 settings for digital and other modes

2018-04-24 Thread Frank O'Donnell
Don, thanks for the comments. I didn't mention it in my prior post, but
setting the mike gain to achieve ~4.5 bars on the ALC meter is indeed
something I paid a lot of attention to.

On that general topic, I've heard others talk about a couple of
strategies for making sure that you're getting a clean digital signal
out that isn't overmodulated. One is to have a local friend take a look
at your signal as received at their location. Another apparently is to
run your transceiver into a dummy load, then use an SDR or similar
receiver close by with a hank of wire as an antenna to sample the signal
you're putting out. I can't remember, however, if those discussions were
in the context of Elecraft radios. Does it seem reasonable to run my KX3
into a dummy load (perhaps with the power out turned down) and listen to
it with, say, an SDRplay to evaluate the signal out? Keeping the levels
low of course to protect the SDR.

One other point about the audio setup for digital. When I was getting my
gear configured, I tried using a couple of different soundcard devices.
One of them seemed to work fine with both right and left stereo channels
plugged in between the soundcard and KX3. When I tried the other
soundcard, however, I got a PTT error when powering up the KX3. After I
unplugged the stereo channel on that soundcard that went to the ring
connector on the KX3 mike in, everything worked fine. Is that a problem
known to occur with some soundcards?

Thanks again,

Frank K6FOD

Frank,

As you have indicated, those settings will get you started.
But definitely use DATA A, not USB.
Reason is that Compression and EQ is automatically set to zero, and
your SSB settings can remain undisturbed.

You mic gain setting is the most important when using data modes. Set
it so you have 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing.

You may want to read the article dealing with setting the audio gains
(yes, there can be up to 3) that is on my website www.w3fpr.com.
Scroll the left column down to the bottom and click on the link to the
article.

There is no sense in setting RS232 to a slower baud rate unless the
application software demands it.

For voice and CW modes, you want to have AGC on.  TX and RX EQ can be
set to whatever your ears like.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 settings for digital and other modes

2018-04-24 Thread Frank O'Donnell
Thanks very much, Walter -- a very helpful reminder of the relevant
manual sections. I'll particularly take a close look at your blog post
in preparation for working phone.

https://observer.wunderwood.org/2015/09/09/transmit-audio-and-compression-with-the-elecraft-kx3/

DATA A mode automatically disables TX EQ, RX EQ, and compression. If
that video suggests using USB and disabling EQ, I wouldn’t trust it,
because it is giving wrong advice. Use the "DATA A and AFSK A (Audio
Data Modes)" instructions in the KX3 manual instead (page 18).

Also, I’m not sure I see the benefit of turning AGC off for digital
modes. The radio has better information about signal strength than an
audio codec can have.

Now I'm looking at expanding use of the radio to CW and perhaps to

understand them all, and know which are important.

Some questions:

1) Do all of the above seem important for digital modes such as FT8?
I believe I read somewhere that when the KX3 is put into Data mode it
will make some of these changes anyway. Are there any I don't need to
worry about as long as I select Data mode for FT8 and other digital
sessions?

2) Should I change any of the above settings for CW?

3) Should I change any of the above settings for phone? Wondering for
example about the mike bias and EQ.

Thanks for any possible help,

The cursors look different depending on mode (CW, SSB, various digital,

that different bands are set for different modes.

I wouldn't, and don't, put the KAT500 on top of the KPA500.  Mine is underneath
the amp.  I've given consideration to building an aux box with the same
footprint and height as the KAT500 to hold an SDR-IQ and other stuff (KRC2
maybe) and have it under the K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 memories

2018-04-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Brian,

If you have not 'trained' the tuner on each band segment, the KAT500
will use the settings from the closest band segment where data is available.

After 'training' the tuner, do you switch the tuner to MANual? If not
you should. If left in AUTO, there will be times when the tuner will
try to tune even though it had already been tuned on that band segment.
That behavior is due to the fact that the forward and reverse power
cannot be measured at exactly the same time.

On SSB for instance, if the forward power is sensed at a time when the
audio is low, and then the audio increases when the reverse power is
measured. the SWR calculation will say (incorrectly) there is a high SWR
and the tuner will attempt to tune.

Leaving the KAT500 in MAN mode prevents that behavior.

Remember that an SWR of 1 is not essential. An SWR of 1.2 or 1.3 is
quite acceptable and will keep the KPA500 quite "happy".

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 168, Issue 26

2018-04-24 Thread Ray W2RS via Elecraft
To all who responded to my question about distorted SSB audio with the KXPA100,
thanks!

My antenna is a Hy-Gain AV620 elevated vertical, fed with 100 feet of Davis
Buryflex (direct bury, feedline loss comparable to Belden 9213). SWR is 1.5 or
lower on 20 through 6 meters.

Don makes an interesting point about power supply voltage. As I mentioned, it
is 13.7 on receive and 13.1 with 100 watts output. That is on 20 meters. On
10 meters, it is 12.7 with 100 watts output. By Don's figures, that is a
possible problem.

I've got lots of receivers. I tried listening to myself on a KWM-2, chosen
because it's got vacuum tubes. There is distortion at all power levels with
the KXPA100, but no distortion with the barefoot KX3. That argues against
supply voltage being the sole cause, but there could be more than one.

I want to try one more thing: the Elecraft mike. I've had RF problems with
several other mikes and rigs, and I want to try a mike that I know is clean.
Unfortunately it has an 8-pin Yaesu cable, so I've ordered an adapter that
plugs into the KX3. When it comes, I'll post the results.

Message-ID: <201804230856.w3n8upzk023...@mail47c28.carrierzone.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

Since the K3 operates so differently (than traditional radios) for
proper modulation I thought I'd ask this:
In olden days amplifiers were rated in PEP typically as 2x average
(or CW) power, so for AM one had to set carrier at 1/4 full carrier
output to stay linear. (1/2 carrier for SSB).

But now I am setting up a 600w linear amp to run at P1 which is about
0.9 of P3 (saturated power) and wondering what level of carrier power
to run in SSB to stay linear and also not to overdrive and stress the
expensive LDMOS device in the amplifier.

I'm running the K3 in transverter mode on 28-MHz so max output is
1.5mw. I can view this with a scope. The amplifier is running at
1296-MHz which is too high a freq to monitor with my scope. I can
only observe average RF power from a directional coupler and diode
detector (like a Bird meter).

Normally, I just set power on the K3 to drive my amp to nominal full
power and select SSB mode. Modulation level is set by observing ALC
meter. I is ALC showing five bars when saying the word "five" loudly
and six bars with compression. So does this mean the K3
automatically adjusts RF power in SSB to stay linear with proper
modulation audio setting?

My reason is when running 1296 SSB to avoid overdriving the amplifier
into P3 possibly causing harm, as much as not wanting to produce
non-linear products.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 settings for digital and other modes

2018-04-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Frank,

As you have indicated, those settings will get you started.
But definitely use DATA A, not USB.
Reason is that Compression and EQ is automatically set to zero, and your
SSB settings can remain undisturbed.

You mic gain setting is the most important when using data modes. Set
it so you have 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing.

You may want to read the article dealing with setting the audio gains
(yes, there can be up to 3) that is on my website www.w3fpr.com. Scroll
the left column down to the bottom and click on the link to the article.

There is no sense in setting RS232 to a slower baud rate unless the
application software demands it.

For voice and CW modes, you want to have AGC on. TX and RX EQ can be
set to whatever your ears like.

This all worked fine. Not long thereafter II changed from setting the

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 settings for digital and other modes

2018-04-24 Thread Walter Underwood
For phone, follow the “Basic Voice-Mode Setup” in the KX3 manual (page 15).
There are some additional settings collected from this list for TX EQ and
compression, I put together a blog post with those.

https://observer.wunderwood.org/2015/09/09/transmit-audio-and-compression-with-the-elecraft-kx3/

DATA A mode automatically disables TX EQ, RX EQ, and compression. If that video
suggests using USB and disabling EQ, I wouldn’t trust it, because it is giving
wrong advice. Use the "DATA A and AFSK A (Audio Data Modes)" instructions in
the KX3 manual instead (page 18).

Also, I’m not sure I see the benefit of turning AGC off for digital modes. The
radio has better information about signal strength than an audio codec can have.

[Elecraft] KX3 settings for digital and other modes

2018-04-24 Thread Frank O'Donnell
Hi all, new ham here and a KX3 owner for three weeks. In the time I've
had the radio, I've used it exclusively for FT8. The first thing I did
was to set it up for digital modes using settings from a YouTube video
by K5ACL. Specifically:

AGC MD: off (default is on)

Mike bias: off (default is on)

RS232: Set to desired baud rate. KX3 supports max 38400 baud

RX EQ: off

TX EQ: off

TX GAIN: ALC 25 (this is the default)

Mode: USB

This all worked fine. Not long thereafter II changed from setting the
KX3 mode to USB, and have been using the Data mode instead.

Now I'm looking at expanding use of the radio to CW and perhaps to
voice. I therefore wanted to revisit the settings to make sure I
understand them all, and know which are important.

Some questions:

1) Do all of the above seem important for digital modes such as FT8? I
believe I read somewhere that when the KX3 is put into Data mode it will
make some of these changes anyway. Are there any I don't need to worry
about as long as I select Data mode for FT8 and other digital sessions?

2) Should I change any of the above settings for CW?

3) Should I change any of the above settings for phone? Wondering for
example about the mike bias and EQ.

Thanks for any possible help,

Frank K6FOD

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 memories

2018-04-24 Thread Brian D
Are the segments on fixed frequencies? I like to work through the bands I
use before contests to set up tuning. Sometimes in the following contest I
find a frequency which seems to be between segments, retuning within 10KHz
either side doesn't then seem to correct the tuning on the specific
frequency I want to use.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 memories

2018-04-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

Harlan,

There are enough to store data for each band segment in the 160m thru 6m
bands. Page 15 of the KAT500 manual shows the width of each band segments:

 Below 3 MHz the segments are 10 kHz wide.
 From 3 MHz through 26 MHz the segments are 20 kHz wide.
 From 26 MHz to 38 MHz the segments are 100 kHz wide.
 From 38 MHz to 60 MHz the segments are 200 kHz wide.

You are not likely to run out of memories.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3

2018-04-24 Thread Don Wilhelm

John,

This reflector covers all Elecraft products.

The notch filter is only used to notch out an *unwanted* signal - use it
carefully since you can easily notch out the signal that you are trying
to receive.

First use the DSP filter to home in on the wanted signal - the PBT knob.
The roofing filter will follow along with the width of the DSP passband.

Once you get the wanted signal, you can optionally use APF if it is of
benefit.

If there is an unwanted signal within the passband, you can use NOTCH to
reduce it.
