There is no simple answer however it is easy to get the shipping price on
the USPS website by entering the to and from zipcodes, the box size, weight
and insured value.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote On/Off KPA-1500

2019-03-18 Thread Dick Dievendorff
1) send a serial command ^on1 via the USB port. This is what the KPA1500
Utility does. The amp can process a few commands like this when “off”. The
KPA1500 Remote program can also do this, via the USB connector. ^on0 turns the
amp off.

2) supply 12v DC to a rear panel RCA connector. This can be used with a K3 to
power the amp on with the K3, but any source of 12v will do.

3) pull down (ground) pin 8 on the ACC connector. Pull it down briefly.

4) send a Wake on LAN “magic packet” via the Ethernet connector. WoL must be
enabled with a menu option. The KPA1500 Remote program does this when
connected to the amp via Ethernet.

[Elecraft] K2 resets in operation or TUNE selection - continuing problem

2019-03-18 Thread wa4ywm
This is an issue I have been dealing with for some time now and the
troubleshooting process has been complex so I will try to be specific about
my questions. Bear with me as I summarize the issue.

My K2/KPA100 performs a complete power reset when TUNE has been activated
for about 10 seconds. It indicates Hi Cur at that point. The radio has to be
on for approximately 2 hours before it exhibits this behavior.

This problem originally occurred in 2015. Don Wilhelm helped me troubleshoot
it and I thought a solution had been found. The problem showed up again in
2018 and Don worked with me extensively to attempt to resolve it to no
avail. Don finally threw in the towel on email troubleshooting and suggested
I try replacing components in suspect circuits which I have done.

Note that I have probably put in 100+ hours on this effort.

We narrowed the problem down to something in the SWR Bridge or the LPF since
it appears that the K2 is calling for more power than it can deliver
increasing the current until it resets.

With that very brief summary in place I will now ask some specific questions
which I hope will be picked up on by someone at Elecraft.

NOTE: DURING ALL THE TESTING THE KPA100 IS CONNECTED BUT WITH POWER SUPPLIED
THROUGH THE BASE K2 CONNECTOR.

I have measured the increase in current in TUNE when the Hi Cur event has
occurred. I broke the 12V supply circuit to the base K2 PA and associated
components to measure the current. During normal TUNE the current is 660mA.
During the Hi Cur event the current is 1.9A - an increase of 1.2A. The
current shown on the K2 display is 4A total.

1. What is the actual reset mechanism? I thought the re-settable fuse would
not trip until 5A was drawn. If it is re-setting, why at 4A?

2. Why is there a 10 sec delay from initiation of TUNE until the K2 resets?

3. Is there some other mechanism for reset (in the firmware?) in the K2?

4. I have replaced every active component in the SWR Bridge including twice
replacing the D16 & D17 diodes. I have removed and examined T4. What other
components should I look at replacing? This is assuming, of course, that the
problem is in the Bridge.

5. Is there something else that needs to be examined? Although I can't
imagine what hasn't been examined during the troubleshooting by Don and
myself.

6. A basic question - why is there a 2 hour period of power on before TUNE
causes a reset? Believe me I have examined this one over and over. I don't
expect an answer - just wanted to throw it out there.

NOTE: I HAVE PERFORMED ALL UPGRADES DURING THIS ENTIRE PROCESS INCLUDING THE
BASE PA UPGRADE.

NOTE: IF ANYONE WANTS TO TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT, I HAVE COMPILED AND
EDITED ALL OF OUR EMAILS INTO A MORE READABLE DOCUMENT.

I REFUSE TO LET THIS THING BEAT ME! THERE HAS TO BE A SOLUTION TO THIS!

Thanks for reading.

73,
Jim WA4YWM

Hi Jim

I bought a bunch of these for my station in 8P. When you reported your
findings with these devices, I was very concerned. I had one in 8P with me
at the time and I measured it in my AIM 4170. I could not reproduce your
observations and used it on 10M with no obvious issues.

Since I have been home, I took another set of measurements with my DG8SAQ
VNA. They were essentially identical to what I measured in 8P.

Just so we are clear on definitions, I measured them in in both directions
using both ports and a precision 50 ohm load. In-A had a steadily rising
SWR with frequency, maxing out at 1.1:1 on 28Mhz. In-B was slightly worse
with the same shape and a max SWR of 1.15:1 at 28 Mhz. It was the same in
both directions and did not change if the unused port was terminated or
open. The isolation was essentially as advertised, over 80 dB up to 28 Mhz.

Admittedly 1.15:1 is not world class, and could be better, but I don't
consider it unacceptable and I plan on using the switches I bought. Are we
drawing different conclusions from the same data?

If you had different measurements, I would be curious if there was some
design change along the way. I did not open them up. The units I have were
bought from another ham, but they were unused.

They also make a product called an Op Swapper that has some other
functionality. What I am testing is the A/B station selector.

2019-03-18 Thread Ken K6MR
I have been using 4 of these switches to share one amplifier between two K3s in
an SO2R setup for the past 4 years. I was running two KPA500s in parallel, but
recently switched to a KPA1500. No problems.

I don’t operate 6 meters, and 10 meters hasn’t been open in so long I can
honestly say I don’t operate there either!

I did not go all the way to 50Mhz. You comment indicated a knee at 21 Mhz,
I did not see that. I saw a linear rise in SWR with frequency. At 28Mhx,
the resistive component was still close to 50 ohms. It looks like a fixed
inductance or capacitance that likely could be compensated away if I were so
motivated.

FWIW - their website only provides specifications up to 30 Mhz. It is
possible that the design scope did not contemplate 50Mhz use.

With 80db of relay isolation, termination should be moot. I was just
verifying that it was. I saw no difference in a 50 ohm load or an open. In
my use case, the unused port will be grounded (I think) so I wanted to be
sure.

They should be fine for my use case, but I can see why they did not work for
you.

I feel better knowing I was not missing anything in my measurements.

Hi Tom,

Yes, we are. I was using a pair of them to switch inputs and outputs of a
KPA500 an Ten Tec Titan. I use the KPA mostly on 6M, and what you saw on 10M
was significantly worse there.

Another important point. It is totally unrealistic to terminate un-used
ports for isolation measurements, because un-used ports are often not
matched at the frequency where isolation is of concern. I measure isolation
between ports with a VNA (the DG8SAQ VNWA3e). In the case of this unit, I
would measure between the two outputs.

Re: [Elecraft] Win4K3Suite ?

2019-03-18 Thread M. George
Bob, I just saw your question about Win4K3Suite. I can add my
recommendation to the others that have responding. I highly recommend it.
I even took the time and made a very detailed YouTube video that you might
be interested in. It focuses on the capability of sharing the K3/S CAT
feed across multiple software apps and hardware. Here is the link
if you want to take a look...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbf7BPfcj4U

I pack a lot of detail in the video... you can jump forward 10 seconds or
back 10 seconds by using the 'J' and 'L' keys on your keyboard or 3 second
jumps using the arrow keys. This video will give you some good context of
how you can leverage the 'virtual' CAT feeds. I love this solution because
it's 100% transparent to the software or hardware you are using. In all
cases, the software or hardware thinks it's directly connected to your K3/S.

Walter.

While I suspect that voltage requirements for the KX3 are similar to those of
the KX2, its a KX2 as the device in question.

And I agree with Don. The underlying issue here is why is the power supply
voltage so low? The KX2 (or KX3) shouldn’t draw more than around three Amps
under full TX power.

Re: [Elecraft] Using Elecraft KPA-1500 for 2 radios

2019-03-18 Thread Tom Georgens
Hi Jim

I bought a bunch of these for my station in 8P. When you reported your
findings with these devices, I was very concerned. I had one in 8P with me at
the time and I measured it in my AIM 4170. I could not reproduce your
observations and used it on 10M with no obvious issues.

Since I have been home, I took another set of measurements with my DG8SAQ VNA.
They were essentially identical to what I measured in 8P.

Just so we are clear on definitions, I measured them in in both directions
using both ports and a precision 50 ohm load. In-A had a steadily rising SWR
with frequency, maxing out at 1.1:1 on 28Mhz. In-B was slightly worse with the
same shape and a max SWR of 1.15:1 at 28 Mhz. It was the same in both
directions and did not change if the unused port was terminated or open. The
isolation was essentially as advertised, over 80 dB up to 28 Mhz.

Admittedly 1.15:1 is not world class, and could be better, but I don't consider
it unacceptable and I plan on using the switches I bought. Are we drawing
different conclusions from the same data?

If you had different measurements, I would be curious if there was some design
change along the way. I did not open them up. The units I have were bought
from another ham, but they were unused.

They also make a product called an Op Swapper that has some other
functionality. What I am testing is the A/B station selector.

Not a great choice. SWR gets increasing nasty above 15M because the
construction uses chassis as signal return rather than carrying it on the
circuit board. It's a two-sided board, but the "ground" layer is broken under
the traces that carry the RF, so return current can't flow on that layer. I
didn't have the heart to try to measure crosstalk.

5-6 years ago, I bought several of them for antenna switching, and learned that
the hard way. I modified them by paralleling copper braid from the connectors
to the board and following the RF paths through the relays across the board as
best I could. That reduced the SWR by about half.

I've since replaced all of them, and they're for sale. :)

Re: [Elecraft] Power output keeps folding back to 5 watts on my KX2

2019-03-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tommy,

That is too much voltage drop. Check all your power connections to be
sure they are tight. If the power supply terminals rotate even a little
bit, open the power supply and tighten the terminals securely.

Since the KX2 power control tries to maintain the set power, if the
voltage drops, it has to draw more current. That means your KX2 may be
exceeding the current limits due to the reduced voltage.

Based on the KX3 specifications, it is designed to run at lower power for
full-carrier modes.

From the transmitter specifications on page 54 of the KX3 Owner’s Manual:

"5 W or less recommended for high-duty-cycle modes (FM, AM, DATA). Power will
automatically be reduced if PA temperature or current limits are exceeded.”

I’d check the KX2 specs for info on that model.

Re: [Elecraft] Power output keeps folding back to 5 watts on my KX2

2019-03-18 Thread Tommy
  Ahhh, O.K., with my 13.2v Astron it's showing 10.3 - 10.8. I guess
for now with this power supply I'll have to settle for 5 watts. Thank
you for the quick reply.

If the voltage is dropping below 11 V, that is the problem.

[Elecraft] Power output keeps folding back to 5 watts on my KX2

2019-03-18 Thread Tommy

   Hi folks,

I'm running FT8 with a KX2 powered by a power supply. The rig
keeps folding back from 10-12 watts to 5 every time and it's barely even
warm.  I'll set it to 12W for instance, it'll transmit fine at that
level but when done cut back to 5w. I don't transmit often enough for it
to get hot enough to protect itself. AGC is off. Any ideas? I appreciate

Re: [Elecraft] BKM for shipping KPA1500?

2019-03-18 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Thanks Don. I just wanted to make sure.

I have one more test to do - to try a new cable. The ohmmeter said the
old cable was fine but I'm having a cable sent.

I know it'll cost me a bit to ship, but a broken amp is not doing me any
good. What's the safest? FedEx store? UPS store?

And, of course, I'm waiting for support to confirm before I ship it.
They haven't been the most pleasant, but that's a different story for
another day.

Thanks.

Sorry, but Dick preempted me.  His answer is correct.  Provide spacers
if you want to mount them together.

Ronnie,

Not a problem at all. Many want to locate the power supply on the floor
to save space and keep the fan noise a bit further away. If you choose
that, put the power supply vertically on its front panel.

I'm afraid so.

Page 9 of the KPA1500 owner's manual, first sentence:

"Provide at least 4" (10 cm) clearance behind the RF Deck fans and above the
Power Supply top cover."

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 PA Current

2019-03-18 Thread Ignacy
At 1500W my Expert 2k-FA reports 50-52A at 49 V. About 55A at 1800W. The
Expert saturates at 2 KW.

You may check out the SWR with a reputable meter. Often multiple meters show
different values on different frequencies. For instance at my station LP100
shows 1.4:1, 2k-fa shows 1.2:1, and K3 shows 1.8:1. But no problem in the
end.

Re: [Elecraft] Why are the batteries internal to the KX3?

2019-03-18 Thread Petr, OK1RP/M0SIS
Hi,

I guess you do not need to removing cells even you planning to put on shelf
for 2-3 months when you have NiMH inside. There should not be the leakage
risk and when you will stock it charged it should not be an issue.
Also I do not removing the bat even although I am using the KX3 powered from
PSU, just charging is OFF and they can stay inside peacefully.
...just me experience.
