K9YC said ... You get what you pay for. Yaesu has been making very dirty radios
-- clicks
and splatter have been the rule.

 __

There is too much parochialism in ham radio.

A couple of ops say this, failing to prove the claim, or substantiate it applies beyond a
couple of isolated cases. While Mr. Sherwood knows ONE guy with a noisy FT3000, there
are loads of them in service in my market, and nobody considers them poor neighbors. If
they are all that bad, we would know it. Such unsubstantiated claims reminds me of a
similar row on the TT reflector, where some guy in Germany claimed the TS-890 is a
"noise machine" compared to the TT Eagle - and failed to document more than two
or three alleged cases, and today recommends the TS-890 as a good rig to buy! K9YC
published a paper purporting to document and quantify transmitter noise figures - which
belies the claim and ultimately validates what the ARRL Lab told me - namely neither rig
is a problem. And, yet, the claim persists.

So, great ... he we go again. More unsubstantiated nonsense. This sort of
parochialism both off-topic and does a disservice. K8JHR

Re: [Elecraft] K4 replacement?

2020-10-08 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Hi Tom,

If your current set up works well, why not just wait until the K4 is
being delivered. Then choose.

I have the same set up as you for the past ten years. Am happy to wait
for the call to come to me for a K4. I am in group 2.

I’ve sent emails to Eric and Wayne, with no response. Telephone calls to
Elecraft seem to indicate they have no idea either about what is going on. I am
in the first group for the K4, but think this is unlikely to ever ship!

In the meantime, I am running my K3/P3/KPA500/KTA500. Works well.

So, the purpose of this email is to generate information about what I should
purchase to replace the K3. My predominant operation is high speed CW, so ask
is very important to me.

Maybe the Kenwood?

Your thoughts are solicited!

#1) Buy Scott a better radio. Yaesu radios are notorious for being a
very bad neighbor. They're dirty, there's nothing another radio can do
when the other radio is spewing trash on your frequency.

#2) Study my talk on multi-station interference for many things you can
do with station building, antenna choice, feedline choice, antenna
layout, and the use of serious ferrite chokes at every antenna feedpoint.

Also see my detailed analysis of ARRL Lab tests of a selected number of
rigs. The raw data for my report came straight from ARRL Labs in
electronic form. Also see ARRL Lab plots of keying bandwidth and phase
noise for Scott's radio.

[Elecraft] K3s in a M/M HP environment question

I ran the SSB side of the show and N6MI the CW. Scott has the FTDX101.

Maybe the solution is a K3s setting, maybe filters (tough) or better separation.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 charger failure?

2020-10-08 Thread Rich NE1EE
I just downloaded the schematic from the Elecraft site. I think this style of
schematic, while space-saving, is difficult to read.
On p 9 @ B5, please find J1.
9-15VDC.
There you will see D6. I was expecting a different circuit, one that fed BAT+
and 15V+ each through a diode. That would provide a diode drop for each device,
and provide reverse polarity protection.

If you are supplying 13.8V, the KX3 should report about 0.3-0.4V less. These
are likely low forward drop diodes.

Even so, I am guessing that this is the correct place to look. Your problem
suggests that if the voltage drops when good batteries are inserted, and pops
back to 13.8Vdc when they are disconnected, then the problem might be in the
charging logic. Some device may be making active choices for when to charge and
when not to, and how much.

More than that is out of my league...

Interesting. There is currently no vessel of that name nor record of a vessel

Re: [Elecraft] P3 info

2020-10-08 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
I recommend checking the P3 Manual for the correct hookup. You can either
use the optional CBLP3Y cable (a separate purchase) or the RJ-45 to DE9-F
adapter cable that is supplied with every K3S. If using the latter, you
have to change CONFIG:RS232 to 38400 (not USB), and the USB cable can
only be used for the USB Audio CODEC, not rig control, and you use the same
serial cable you were using before, with the K3. Otherwise, you need to
use the CBL3P3Y to make everything work with one USB cable (CONFIG:RS232
USB).

Re: [Elecraft] K4 built-in operating manual now available

2020-10-08 Thread Grant Youngman
Even if you could do that, it might not be as useful as you expect.
Sections/topics are linked from a main page and keywords, but not paginated.
And there’s no page numbered “index” to help you get around. This is more of a
greatly expanded “help" function than a typically organized manual. It would
be hard to get around in it on paper, unless you did a lot of reformatting
and/or indexing before printing it.

Just one though on the subject.

Is there a provision to print out the manual from the K4?  I'm pretty

If someone wants to translate the built-in manual into another language, we'll
definitely make it accessible. In that case we would have to share the source

The K4D has been tested in heavy contesting conditions with stations in line

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Now: shipboard callsigns, was: W vs K broadcast station callsigns,

2020-10-08 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
It turns out there are TWO ways you can get a 4 letter call for a
shipboard station-
You can have a licensed radiotelegraph station, OR
you can have small boats with permanent radio installations.
In 2014/5 I got OLIVER HAZARD PERRY the callsign KOHZ by citing that rule when
we did our original application, and installed radios in our small boats.

And as lagniappe, when BOUNTY was foundering in late October of 2012,
the master was licensed as KD4OHZ, and we used the Winlink station on board
with his callsign to communicate with the USCG by email.
I've always wondered if the former callsign was related to the latter. since
both boats were in the same category as sailing school vessels, and someone
at the FCC picked up on that. But probably not.

I am missing a point:
Istvan said When I plug in the 13.8V PS the radio shows 13.8V for only 1 second

I don't have a KX3, but I understand the diode issue..and it makes sense...but

[Elecraft] K4 built-in operating manual now available

2020-10-08 Thread Wayne Burdick
The K4 has a complete operating manual built in, accessible by taping the "?"
icon at the lower left-hand corner of the screen. This is a convenient
supplement to the full owner's manual (in progress).

The built-in operating manual has small and large screen formats. It's a
hyperlinked .html document that will be continuously updated to reflect the
current software level. You can tap highlighted links on the LCD to navigating
forwards/backwards as in any browser, or search by entering text using the
on-screen keyboard. The "LAST CTRL" button allows you to go directly to
information pertaining to controls recently used.

Several early reviewers have vetted a draft of the built-in operating manual
(by viewing it with a browser on a computer or mobile device). It has been
revised and is now posted on our website, at:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/K4/Manuals%20Downloads/K4%20Built-In%20Operating%20Manual%20rev%20A-7/K4BuiltInOperatingManualrevA7.html

Further suggestions or comments are welcome.

  NOTE

The built-in operating manual has a limited number of illustrations, since it
is intended to be used from within the radio itself, which provides context.
Another way to familiarize yourself with the front panel is to read through the
"Introduction to the Elecraft K4", at:

Don,
This value is shown when the 13.8V PS is connected. It had shown the PS

[Elecraft] K4D vs K4HD

2020-10-08 Thread Peter Chamalian
I've read the specs but I can't translate that into practical terms. I
suspect the K4HD is a better choice when you are in a multi transmitter
environment like FD or a multi-multi but are there other situations where
the HD is a better choice? I do have a few local hams and I have
encountered some problems when we are on 6 meters but otherwise no real
interference or rx blocking problems. I have K3S.

Do any of the beta testers have a K4HD?

Re: [Elecraft] Case for K4

2020-10-08 Thread Grant Youngman
I believe Rose posted previously that she would not be making soft cases for
the K4. That may have changed, though.

While I have both KX3 and K3/P3 DX cases from Rose, I’m probably going to
purchases a Pelican or similar for the K4.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

2020-10-08 Thread Steve KC6ZKT
I received about the same number of similar comments off-list as you've
seen on-list. (Thanks!) So at least twenty of us would eagerly buy such
an upgrade to the KX3 (see my previous post, below).

I suspect that the Elecraft folks don't have the bandwidth to work on
such a thing right now. If we want it bad enough, we might need to take
it into our own hands.

If any of you out there have mad CAD skills, and are looking for a
project, contact me off-list. Perhaps we can do a little feasibility
study by drafting a preliminary design of a KXBC3 replacement.

On 10/6/20 2:28 PM, Paul Maciel wrote:

I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery
into the field when I use this radio, an external charge controller,
and solar panel. It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a
big project to improve this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real
estate to include a lithium battery charger, and even a solar charge
controller in its space. The amount of battery energy that could fit
in-place of the NiMH cells could approximately triple the capacity of
the AA cells.

So I have these questions:

1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the
KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery
pack?

2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?

Get a KX2. It will probably be at least a couple of years before announcement
of its replacement will make it instantly obsolete and unusable in the manner
that the K4 obviously has made your K3 for you. :-)

Tom,

The Kenwood TS-890 is on my short list should I grow too impatient waiting for
the K-4. I have almost pulled the trigger many times on it.

That said, earlier in this waiting process I bought a Flex 6400M and almost

[Elecraft] K4 replacement?

2020-10-08 Thread Tom Doligalski via Elecraft
I am a bit depressed about the lack of feedback from Elecraft about the K4.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 off frequency?

2020-10-08 Thread David Olean

Hello Elecrafters,

I had a similar problem with a K3 this past March. My brother had his K3
die and I offered to look at it for him.  He claimed that he could only
hear things on part of 80 meters. All the other bands were dead on RX
and TX.  When I checked it, I found similar symptoms. At one point it
started working again normally, then, with the next power cycle, it died
again.  The problem was traced to the synthezizer.  Board layout
diagrams are a bit sketchy for troubleshooting. I contacted Customer
Support and a wondeful tech guy gave me some pointers on where to look.

The problem, while seeming to be serious, turned out to be a simple
fix.  The 8 volt three terminal regulator mounted on the side panel had
rolled over and died.  When I got everything running again, I made some
notes (complete with pictures and arrows )  I tried to attach it to my
response to N2RD and the reflector, but the  e mail was rejected as it
was too big. I think the notes are pretty good as it shows where to look
for voltages involved with the synthesizer, as well as LO signal levels
and frequencies, on each band for the receive and transmit paths.

Is there a simple way I can post these notes so all can see it? I did
send them to N2RD to help him figure things out.  If anyone is
interested, I can send them the note. It is a WORD document and is about
3.2MB in size.  The size is due to color pictures of the circuit boards
showing the test points etc.

My K3 (with all S upgrades, ser #170) stopped working over the weekend. I
noticed that on 80m, while the frequency on the rig was 3574, the frequency
reported by KAT500 was 3152 (or so). No output on any other band. I then
checked reception of WWV - no reception of the 10Mhz signal. I fed in a -50dBm
signal at 3574KHz. No reception.

I am going to crack the case on the weekend.

The only think I can think of is that something has shaken loose as the rig was
transported by car a while ago. Given the odd frequency, I am thinking that it
may in the LO chain.

Any thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 charger failure?

2020-10-08 Thread Don Wilhelm

Istvan,

There are protective diodes in series with both the internal batteries
and the external supply, so the fact that the KX3 shows 0.3 to 0.4 volts
lower than the external supply is normal.

Is it known failure, what can I do to fix it?
