Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-09 Thread JR

"ARRL Lab engineers are not active in contesting,..."

Meh. Suggesting the ARRL Lab is ignorant about real world contesting is
incredible. They are plenty smart, have their own stations, and do NOT live in
a technological vacuum. If it was a problem, they would know it.

"It is THEIR DATA, not mine."

Exactly. You concede my point. You present no evidence or proof of your own,
and concede the available data fails to prove the problem.

"Yaesu rigs used to be pretty clean on SSB;
current vintage Yaesu rigs are VERY dirty ...
occupying three times the bandwidth of a clean
SSB signal"

Pshaw. You exaggerate. Three times normal bandwidth is more than 8.5 MHz. If ALL Yaesu signals really are
that wide, everyone would know it, and even the least expensive SDR dongle would easily show it. The boys in
the ARRL Lab would be well aware of it, and besides, it makes no sense to say "current vintage" -
as "current" and "vintage" are essentially opposites.

Bottom line: I gave you the home run pitch, challenging you to proffer hard
evidence of your unsubstantiated, anecdotal claim. Instead, your generalizing
rebuttal and brandishing credentials is weak as water.

AS for MY experience, while I am not an engineer, I am reasonably well informed
and made my millions cross-examining self-proclaimed experts lacking sufficient
evidence.

As this is clearly OT, I will retire before wearing out my welcome, especially
considering you have made my point for me!

Happy days, and good DX to all. K8JHR

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote

2020-10-09 Thread Dave
Hi Andy,

Someone on anothergroup mentioned sending P; to the KPA500 would turn the amp
on provided to main power switch was on. Can you confirm that?

Reason is I want to make sure the Node Red flow I had mentioned is programmed
correctly.

I use Wake on Lan with the KPA1500 successfully.

Thanks

It doesn't display spots today. It could in the future.
It does support click-to-QSY with either a finger on the screen or a mouse
(more accurate pointing).

Re: [Elecraft] Noisy radios

2020-10-09 Thread K8TE
A neighbor who lives just 300 yards away purchased and now operates an
IC-7300. When he operates 40m CW, the phase noise occurs across the entire
40m band on my K3 with the upgraded synthesizer. You could never use an
IC-7300 for Field Day on the same band with other radios.

OTOH, we had three K3's (prior to the upgraded synthesizer on 20m
simultaneously. We only knew the others were active if we tuned to within
20 kHz or so of them. I was the the SSB team captain and had no problem on
20m as long as we didn't get "near" the GOTA station when it was on the same
band. This was with the same physical distance I know face the IC-7300.

Another IC-7300 over a mile away is very broad (20-30 kHz) when operated on
40m SSB. I often hear splatter 40 kHz up the band! While I tell people the
IC-7300 is a great package for the price, I also tell them not to use it
with big antennas or physically near other radios. Fortunately, I have no
Yaesu HF rigs in active use in the neighborhood although I see their dirty
signals in many contests.

A used K3S is quite a bargain today!

[Elecraft] K4 Update Oct 9

2020-10-09 Thread Eric Swartz
To answer the big question, yes we started shipping small numbers of our
first regular production K4s in late September. :-) We are building more
K4s now in production and we expect more to start going out late next week
or the following week.

Our production rate will be slower than we want through the rest of October
and early November as we fine tune everything
and navigate intermittent supplier delays, temporary production stoppages
etc. and as we continue to tune our production and test processes. As the
K4 production rate gets stabilized we will also be able to give better
estimates when individual orders will ship. Please be patient with us as we
work through this.

One note - initial K4 orders on 5/17 were huge, both on the Web and at
Dayton. (As were ordered the following weeks and months..) Even the first
shipping group K4 orders with large deposits from that first day were so
large that they will take some time to ship. We will email or call to
notify everyone as their order gets close.

It's been a challenge dodging all of the unexpected obstacles we've
encountered the last several months. COVID-19 shutdowns, the CA Fires and
the resulting impacts on our staff, suppliers and overall efficiency have
been challenging. Many of our team are working from home due to COVID-19
requirements (including Wayne and myself, engineering and most of our sales
staff). The CA fires had a major impact in late August and through
September. Two of our engineers lost their homes and radios, and a third
came close, with the fire coming within a mile of his location. Fortunately
everyone is OK and back at work and there is no ongoing fire threat
locally.

The Elecrft HQ and factory in Watsonville is far from where the active
fires were and was never at risk. It's in an open industrial park far from
the forests and near the coast. We have also reconfigured the factory and
test area layouts for safe operation with regard to proper social
distancing, better air flow and good workstation isolation between workers.
Our inventory is safe and our production and test teams are hard at
work there.

Several of our local suppliers (machine shops etc.) had mandatory
evacuations for several weeks as a precaution during the local fires.
Fortunately their facilities were undamaged, but that has increased delays
getting parts finished and delivered to us as they restart. Each day
presents new challenges. So far, we've been able to work through each
new surprise.

We are in good financial shape, with plenty of funds to run our operation
and fund the K4 ramp up. Amazingly, even during the COVID shut downs in the
spring we continued to receive orders for all of our products at a strong
rate. It looks like the extra time everyone had while staying at home has
increased interest in ham radio! As a result we are still running with a
strong backlog of orders for our regular products, which are shipping daily
in addition to the K4. This has helped enormously.

Thank you to everyone for your support.

73,
Eric

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote

2020-10-09 Thread rocketnj
You could possibly look at Node Red which runs on a Raspberry Pi. I use it with
a KPA1500 and I know there is a flow (programming) for the KPA500 as well. The
Pi runs on your home network and you use a USB to serial cable from the KPA500
to the Pi. You can control and monitor the amp from any web browser.

If you are interested we have a Google Groups.io site
https://groups.io/g/nodered-hamradio

Here's a picture of my Node Red dashboard. The panel on the left is for the
KPA1500. The layout is customizable.

I use the KAT500 remote software and it works great. I have only one problem
with it, I can not tell if the power is on or off. This matters because when
the remote site looses power the state of the KAT500 is unknown and the program
does not indicate if the power is ON or OFF. Is there a way to tell?

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it works, but it
would be much better for a positive indication of the power state by button
color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC is applied, but not sure this is always observed. I have no other way
to see the remote site when this happens.

Any suggestions?

Dude  just print it yourself on your chosen paper stock.  You can
spiral bind it yourself at OfficeMax, et al.  OR you can send it off and
have it bound.

Or just punch holes and put it in a folder or a notebook.

I have a FULL set of the latest Elecraft docs, et al. including ALL my
Cady books printed and in notebooks for flat, easy reference.

Practice on a small, multi-page doc to get your printer settings
optimized  I print best quality, two-sided, standard paper... Works
great!

I can't claim credit for that ... the information was originally
identified by W8JI in Yaesu rigs as far back as the FT1000D and
FT1000MP (and other Yaesu transceivers of that era).

Not only do Yaesu derive their ALC based on overdrive of the final
amplifiers, they have excess gain in both their TX IF and ALC loop
which only makes matters worse (as anyone who is familiar with the
design of servo control circuits will understand). One can make a
noticeable improvement in TX IMD in Yaesu transceivers by reducing
the TX IF gain (if one knows how to access the factory alignment
menu) on each band to the minimum necessary to reach full output.
Reducing the IF gain also reduces "overshoot" and helps with the
key clicks but - alas - it does nothing about the phase noise
issues.

ARRL Lab engineers are not active in contesting, hence are unlikely to
see these problems. My "paper" you referenced is a re-plotting of ARRL
Lab data for all rigs on the same scale, and at scales large enough to
clearly see differences. It is THEIR DATA, not mine.

Not a problem? Yaesu rigs used to be pretty clean on SSB; current
vintage Yaesu rigs are VERY dirty on SSB, occupying three times the
bandwidth of a clean SSB signal. W4TV, a retired broadcast engineer,
traced the cause down to their method of doing ALC. I became aware of
this when trying to work next to one of these dirty stations on the
band; the P3SVGA display clearly showed the IMD-caused splatter on both
sides of the station's intended signal. The splatter extended more than
2 kHz below his USB suppressed carrier frequency, and almost than 5 kHz
above it. A clean SSB signal (not ESSB) signal is about 2.7 kHz wide.

After this first experience, I observed a lot of signals like this, and
asked some of them what rig they were using. It was nearly always a
Yaesu. Those that were not were splattering because they were
overdriving their amp.

This is NOT parochialism, it's solid engineering, which is my expertise.
What's yours?

Heil are *notorious* for incorrectly wiring their adapters
(mic ground and PTT ground reversed and/or mic ground connected
to the shell of the Foster plug). If you have the AD1K adapter,
check it carefully! Also, make sure you are not using the
extra high gain preamp - the Heil dynamic mics have enough drive
to work with RP.H/FP.H settings (the + is not needed and BIAS should
be OFF). Heil's iC (electret) element works with RP.L/FP.L BIAS.

Re: [Elecraft] K4: DX Spots Displayed on PanAdapter

I did a search for the ability of the K4 to display DX spots on screen, and
the ability to "click" on them to QSY to the spot, interfacing with 3rd

capability).

I found Rich's question (see below), but couldn't determine if there had

Some of that information is in my summary of ARRL Lab tests.

FCC limits are not expressed well for those who deal only with numbers.
What SHOULD be the dominant paragraph says that the bandwidth of a
signal shall be the minimum required for the means of transmission. In
practical terms, that means carefully shaped CW keying, minimum phase
noise, minimum IMD. It's essentially a "state of the art" spec. But
because there are no numbers attached, the paragraph is widely ignored.

You may want to check with Lulu.com

They may print you 1 copy for your use, which is allowed under US copyright
law…. For an extra charge of course. I believe the procedure would be purchase
the pdf, download it, the submit it through their web site tool for on demand
printing…

I was looking for the last version of the Cady K3S P3 book and purchased the
pdf, but the found a printed copy, which I purchased. I want a
macro-programming book also, and may try what I have outlined above.

[Elecraft] KAT500 remote

2020-10-09 Thread Gordon LaPoint
I use the KAT500 remote software and it works great. I have only one
problem with it, I can not tell if the power is on or off. This matters
because when the remote site looses power the state of the KAT500 is
unknown and the program does not indicate if the power is ON or OFF.  Is
there a way to tell?

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it works,
but it would be much better for a positive indication of the power state
by button color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC  is applied, but not sure this is always observed.  I have no
other way to see the remote site when this happens.

Any suggestions?

Every time I see one of those plots from the ARRL Lab, I wonder “what is a good
number?” I really wish they would add some additional lines to the graph. One
suggestion:

* FCC regulated limits (where they exist)
* 90th percentile (best 10%) of tests in the previous five years
* Best test in the previous five years

I think those would be a nice contribution towards the "Continuation and
extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of
the radio art”, to quote Part 97.

I guess I should be telling this to QST and the ARRL Lab, not this list, but
does this sound like a good idea to others?

Maybe Elecraft can publish these for the K4 to get the ball rolling.

noise figures - which belies the claim and ultimately validates what the
ARRL Lab told me - namely neither rig is a problem.

Re: [Elecraft] New boxes and packing for Elecraft equipment

2020-10-09 Thread Walter Underwood
In my case, I would need to disassemble my KX3 and put it all back in the
individual kit subboxes.
I never had a box that holds an assembled KX3. Same thing for the PX3 and
KXPA100. :-)

Yes. But the packing is a bit expensive. And, you get a free radio in every
box.

Just as a reference. Over the years I've sent equipment to Yaesu USA for
repair. I sent them in the original sales box surrounded by a form-fitting
shipping box as I received it from the dealer. When I received it back both
boxes were within a new form-fitting box so I ended up with the equivalent
of a 3 wall thickness box.

It would be nice if Elecraft and others could do the same plus send back
equipment with new custom foam and in custom boxes (if they don't already)
if received without them. However, I do believe Yaesu did charge for the
overpacking. I don't recall if it was an option but I believe they may have
warned you of that fact and practice before you sent it in. I, for one,
welcome the safe practice to protect my equipment.

Of course, Yaesu and others build their higher end radios with a larger and
much heavier cast aluminum chassis which makes custom foam and boxes more
critical.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 charger failure?

2020-10-09 Thread Dippy Hippy
I had exactly the same symptons as the OP just a couple of weeks ago and it
puzzled me too. With my KX3, the "cure" for this behaviour was to change the
display settings from external voltage to internal voltage. I think that the
radio displays a default reading first and then changes during its boot up
procedure dependent upon how you have it configured?

Apologies if I'm off target here- I've just endured an hour and a half trying
to work out how to post a reply and I'm still not sure! My bad I guess?

Is there a provision to print out the manual from the K4?  I'm pretty

revisit the Elecraft web to see if a more recent version of a manual
is available would be a  nice bonus IMHO.

[Elecraft] Noisy radios

2020-10-09 Thread Conrad PA5Y
This is not nonsense in my experience, but I am an exclusively VHF operator
where bad transmitters are immediately obvious. This statement ''nobody
considers them poor neighbors' is incorrect. I do! They are bloody awful!

Rob Sherwood's attempts at focusing attention on poor TX composite noise and
poor IMD is admirable. I hope that he continues to raise awareness on this
issue.

On 6m those using the FTDX-5000 with QRO are quite difficult to deal with. Less
so now everybody is on 50.313 and most locals are on the same sequence!

One FTDX-5000 user is on 2m and 70cms EME, he uses the FTDX-5000 as a driver
for his transverters. Same problem, the poor PN is extremely evident. Again,
the use of the same TX sequence helps and fortunately he does not participate
in VHF contests.

The other radio that is quite offensive is the IC-7300 when used with a PA.
When the power is turned down the composite noise gets much worse, especially
on 6m. Some people are using them to drive transverters, same problem. It is
obvious because there is a major noise bump at +300kHz!

I have measurements done with an FSWP Noise analyser to back this up. There are
thousands of IC7300s in use and this is one very disappointing aspect of their
performance. The user is unaffected, other band users must suffer. The IC9700
is fine unless used with a big PA then these are not good neighbours. I can see
the appeal of these radios but Icom need to do better!

The FTDX-101 series is MUCH better than Yaesu's previous offerings, although I
only know of 2 of them locally. They are good in fact.

If you like I CAN substantiate the claims with measurements.

The K3S has excellent low PN but use it on SSB and the IMD is unacceptable, I
am VERY disappointed with my K3S TX IMD on 6m. Good job nobody uses SSB on 6m
these days  This is an extremely unpopular opinion on this forum and I really
hope that the K4 is better!

It is extremely difficult to convince the owner of a shiny new radio that his
signal is bad, it MUST be the receiver. Even though receivers are getting
better and better.

  __

There is too much parochialism in ham radio.

A couple of ops say this, failing to prove the claim, or substantiate it
applies beyond a couple of isolated cases. While Mr. Sherwood knows ONE guy
with a noisy FT3000, there are loads of them in service in my market, and
nobody considers them poor neighbors. If they are all that bad, we would know
it. Such unsubstantiated claims reminds me of a similar row on the TT
reflector, where some guy in Germany claimed the TS-890 is a "noise machine"
compared to the TT Eagle - and failed to document more than two or three
alleged cases, and today recommends the TS-890 as a good rig to buy! K9YC
published a paper purporting to document and quantify transmitter noise figures
- which belies the claim and ultimately validates what the ARRL Lab told me -
namely neither rig is a problem. And, yet, the claim persists.

So, great ... he we go again. More unsubstantiated nonsense. This sort of
parochialism both off-topic and does a disservice. K8JHR
