Maybe but with 100s of field activations under my belt this felt different!!

I’m still routing for a spectacular cycle 25.

[Elecraft] 1/2 Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2020-11-28 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It almost got sunny today, then a wall of fog passed over. Now the
moon is partly visible above the fog.  This week I saw a group of deer
browsing their way through that foggy day.  I did not know they ate
sword fern.  Those stay green all winter, the other ferns feed the
soil.  New crops of mushrooms.  The cooler weather chooses different
species.

Propagation is pretty good when the sun cooperates.  SFU at 106.  It
seemed stuck at 70 for over a year, now it has jumped. The sunspot
groups are getting large again too.  The auroral oval is not too big.
However, there is a major contest going on.  I expect that to improve
conditions all by itself.  They should be having fun with the sun this
active.  It also means I will cancel the 20 meter net.  The 40 meter net
begins half an hour after the close of CQ Worldwide DX contest.

Please join us tomorrow on:

7047 kHz at 0030z Monday  (4:30 PM PST Sunday)

73,

   Kevin. KD5ONS

2020-11-28 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
Hi Wayne

I did a couple of SOTA activations earlier today in the Eastern Sierras with my
ever trusty KX2.

I had some voice contacts on 17m to Hawaii and back east that were the best
quality (clarity, lack of noise) that I have heard in ages. I hope Cycle 25
turns out to be a gem.

Power Pole connectors come in MANY sizes -- different housings,
different inserts. The 15A and 30A inserts are pretty easy to install if
you buy the inserts the fit the wire. The 30A inserts are good up to
#12. The 45A inserts are needed for #10, and they are VERY tricky to
install. I've installed many hundreds of Power Poles, all soldered.

The caution about where to buy them is very good advice.

BTW -- the red/black zip cord is NOT ideal for use around RF. Twisted
pair is FAR better, because twisting strongly resists differential mode
RF pickup.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Odd AGC problem with K60XV installed

2020-11-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

It is also a mystery to me that it is intermittent rather than a solid
failure.  That might imply that something is breaking into oscillation
and overwhelming the VRFDET line.  That is why I suggested you check the
component placement and the diode orientation.
That intermittent condition can also be caused by a soldering problem
that takes some time to appear.

For the non-transverter bands, it is only necessary that the 4.7pF
capacitor be in the circuit and that relay K1 be in the reset position.

If you hear a relay click when this problem starts, then look to the
firmware on the K60XV to make sure all its related components are in
place - there are not many.  If you do hear the relay click, one thing
you can do is to arbitrarily replace the resonator.  While I have never
seen an intermittent resonator (dead one = yes), it is one possibility.

2020-11-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

You might want to inspect the K60XV soldering carefully for bridges and
anything unsoldered.

When this fault condition occurs, what is the voltage on K60XV P1 pin 6.
If VRFDET becomes active during receive, the K2 may behave as you
describe because the firmware 'thinks' the K2 is transmitting. The fact
that you do not see it on the transverter bands further amplifies my
thoughts on the source of the problem being the VRFDET signal.

I cannot think of a component problem that would create your condition,
so that is why I asked you to review the soldering. Look at the
component placement too - make sure all the components are in the right
hole and not in a nearby via hole. Check D3 and D4 for proper orientation.

odd trouble with it installed. I saw this briefly the day after the SS CW
contest, and on the second day of the SS Phone contest. In each case, removing

Here’s what I’ve observed. After leaving the K2/100 turned on for several

This condition is intermittent and random. It tends to last for several seconds
to many minutes. It happens on all bands at the same time EXCEPT it does NOT
happen on any TRN band that is configured (I have one configured for 50 MHz/28

The AGC activation happens in all all AGC modes, SLO, FAST and OFF. I was able

blanking occurs, I see a train of pulses around 2 mS apart - around 500 Hz.

[Elecraft] [K2] Odd AGC problem with K60XV installed

2020-11-28 Thread Bill Coleman
A few weeks ago, I managed to cobble enough of the parts together to build a
K60XV. It came together great, and works both on 60m as well as a base for a
transverter.

I thought that would have been the happy end of the story, except I’ve had some
odd trouble with it installed. I saw this briefly the day after the SS CW
contest, and on the second day of the SS Phone contest. In each case, removing
the K60XV solved the problem and it did not recur.

Here’s what I’ve observed. After leaving the K2/100 turned on for several
hours, the rig is in receive mode, but the AGC is fully activated, with all ten
bars showing on the S-meter. The receiver audio is entirely blanked.

This condition is intermittent and random. It tends to last for several seconds
to many minutes. It happens on all bands at the same time EXCEPT it does NOT
happen on any TRN band that is configured (I have one configured for 50 MHz/28
MHz). This lead me to believe the K60XV was involved. During the SS Phone, I
removed the K60XV and replaced it with a Re-work eliminator and K2/100 and the
rig worked just fine for the next 10 hours.

During the last three days, I opened the K2 up and laid the KPA100 on the
workbench and left the K2 powered up with the K60XV installed. The problem
manifested itself within hours. I was able to run a few diagnostics.

The AGC activation happens in all all AGC modes, SLO, FAST and OFF. I was able
to get a scope probe on the emitter of Q12 on the Control board. When the
blanking occurs, I see a train of pulses around 2 mS apart - around 500 Hz.

I tried poking a finger around various places on the K60XV board to try to
exacerbate the problem. I wasn’t able to determine anything conclusive,
although a couple of times I thought something in the vicinity of the K2 relay
might be involved.

I’m completely dumbfounded by this problem. There’s nothing in the K60XV that
interconnects with the AGC system in any way. What could possibly be going on
here?

Re: [Elecraft] K3- Replacement 12-Volt Power Cable

2020-11-28 Thread Ron Manfredi

Dick,

Powerwerx is a company that sells Power Poles, but be aware that on Ebay
you might find Power Pole 'copies,' not the originals mad by the
Anderson company.

As for power ratings, yes, there are different power ratings, but the
15, 30 and 45 Amp versions all use the same plastic housing, which means
they will connect with one another.   Only the actual metal contactors
are different sizes.

If your K3 is around 3-6  feet from the power supply then the 12 Gauge
wire should be fine.   For longer runs, you might want to consider a 10
Gauge cable due to the voltage drop.   For some good info on them, go to
the Powerwerx site here:

The part number is KPCA-F, it has an APP connector on one end and ring

Re: [Elecraft] Sunspots!?!?

I am partly through this paper. What may not be obvious at a glance are the
statistics and math that underlie the analysis. I may as well be in for a
penny, in for a pound. I had thought before reading this paper that there is a
good reason to think that the sunspot activity will approach 250, +- a really
big window. This is only slightly higher than McIntosh's 233. I think that I
disagree with his model, but agree with his math and his conclusions. I
encourage anyone who has an interest here to read the various papers. They will
not be casual reading.

I have had many successes and failures over the years. One thing that seems to
put me in a smaller class of physicists is that I don't mind being wrong. I am
passionate and enthusiastic about my beliefs, and ready to change them
immediately upon seeing proof that I am wrong. A while back I was pursuing a
particular math approach to finding (mumble, mumble, space plasma physics), and
one of the senior PhDs said that "some really f*** smart people" had developed
another approach, and I'd better spend my time understanding what they did,
rather than go off in a different direction. My math later replaced that
alternate approach. You need not think that this implies that I am any brighter
than any one here, but that it points to a closed mindedness that really
surprises me in the scientific community. One of my friends is fond of saying
that he thinks I am bright enough to have 2 brains...one the size of a BB, and
other just a tiny thing ;-) I appreciate the humor. We can also be
found in public venues declaring to one another (wink, wink) that we are so
smart that our IQs are not just in the 90s, they are in the /high/ 90s ;-) I
have seen many insights come from folks with the equivalent of HS diplomas, and
don't place much stock on the "paper" I have filed somewhere. That's why it's
not on my wall.

At any rate, we will all hold our breaths. Even if Cycle 25 is a banner cycle,
my rotating-spinning-toroid sun model may not be correct. I can live with that
;-) And the cycles are good cycles-bad cycles, because what might be good for
hams will certainly be cause for concern for those operating satellites and
orbiting people containers. Now back to our regularly scheduled entertainment...

[Elecraft] KX3 separate rx/tx antenna switch

2020-11-28 Thread Ian Liston-Smith
Many of us have separate receive antennas - often active loops etc. - because
out transmit antenna picks up too much noise. Does Elecraft have a changeover
device that switches between the two fast enough not to damage an active rx
antenna? Specifically for the KX3? Could the ACC 1 or 2 be used for this?
Thanks.

PS: I have this option for the K2 and it's very useful.
