Re: [Elecraft] Need Mic adapter: Icom SM-50 to K3 mic input jack

2021-11-02 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Or... you can use the standard stereo mini plug which is usually
supplied with condenser mikes and plug into the mic jack on the rear of
the K3.  I use a Yamaha CM550 and it plugged directly into my K3 - just
had to remember to enable bias on the rear mike jack.  I don't know
which flavor of mic those two are, but page 28 of the K3 manual (and
nowhere else I can find) explains what to do.

Pin 5 for Elecraft is the Function button.

If your microphone does not require +5 volts and does not have buttons
other than PTT, then you only have to be concerned about pin 1 (AF),
pin 2 (PTT) and pins 7 and 8 (one for PTT return and the other for AF
return - both are connected together inside the K3).

Icom and Yaesu are not as straightforward, see the G4WPW info at
https://www.qsl.net/g4wpw/date.html for details on the pinout for
those mics.

If you can do a bit of soldering, you can make and adapter for the
price of a male and female Foster connector and a bit of wire.  If you
rewire the Foster connector on the mic, you don't need any adapter or
connectors at all, just a bit of solder, to unsolder the wires from
the existing connector and solder them in the correct pins for the K3.

OTOH, if you wish to switch back and forth between the Icom/Yaesu
pinout and the Elecraft, the adapter or the MFJ box would be the best
choice.

I have no microphone for my K3. I am usually on CW or the digital modes.
Now I want to get on the KY Phone Net on 3838.

So I talked DXEngineering and they know of no adapter plug/cable.

So, I have an Icom SM-50 mic  and a Yaesu MD-100 mic.

Anyone know of an adapter connector that would fit either to adapt
them to the K3?
Or maybe a universal box that lets me plug all the mic's in and have
a cable to the K3

Also run an Icom IC-9700 FWIW.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Tuning K3

2021-11-02 Thread CUTTER DAVID via Elecraft
Hi Jim

Not many folks have the space or ability to put up a full set of resonant
dipoles. The MODERN off centre fed dipole is as good as you'll get any
multiband antenna and for the most part will not need a separate antenna match
box.

I suggest you measure the common mode current on a decent ocf dipole and see
for yourself. Great progress has been made in the last few years and, yes I use
your cookbook.

I suspect you don't understand the physics of the problem. OCF antennas
are a yesterday's approach to multiband antennas. They are a recipe for
RX noise and RF in the shack. The concept was developed decades ago,
when there was far less noise than there is today. It's possible to fool
yourself that it's working fine, but you can't hear very well, so you
miss stations calling you.

I run legal limit on FT8 for weak signal work on 6M and difficult paths
on 160M (EU from California) into resonant antennas that are choked and
fed with RG8 or RG11, and I regularly get signal reports 15-20 dB worse
than I give. Since signal reports on FT8 are signal to noise, that means
the other station can't hear.

You will have to either rewire the Icom mic's Foster plug or you need to
purchase the Foster plug adaptor for the Yaesu mic and then rewire it.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Tuning K3-" Balun"

2021-11-02 Thread David Gilbert

A common mode choke (not really a balun) at a point of high SWR can heat
up and as it does so everything drifts, making tuning impossible.  Been
there, done that using high power to a 160m Inverted-L that was close to
resonant, but due to expediency was fed at a point of high SWR.  A
relayout of the antenna to lower the SWR fixed everything using the same
choke (which luckily hadn't been permanently damaged).

numbers or color code direction is always the same.

Subject: [Elecraft] Problem Tuning K3

Jim,
I assume your using a balun with your
OFC antenna. I had a similar problem with my OCF that turned out to be the
balun. It was fine under low power but would not tune under high power.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Rf Choke placement

2021-11-02 Thread Don Wilhelm
Those RF chokes are bi-lateral - they can be installed either way, just
like resistors.

[Elecraft] Need Mic adapter: Icom SM-50 to K3 mic input jack

2021-11-02 Thread Bob KD7YZ
Hello Elecraft List

I have no microphone for my K3. I am usually on CW or the digital modes.
Now I want to get on the KY Phone Net on 3838.

So I talked DXEngineering and they know of no adapter plug/cable.

So, I have an Icom SM-50 mic and a Yaesu MD-100 mic.

Anyone know of an adapter connector that would fit either to adapt them to the
K3?
Or maybe a universal box that lets me plug all the mic's in and have a cable to
the K3
Also run an Icom IC-9700 FWIW.

thanks!

I had the strangest thing happenyesterday (K3, 1st prod run).

All of a sudden, I lost all audio output (headphones). I pull the
headphones, but same thing on the internal spkr. Radio was tuning,
receiving (per P3) and transmitting, but zero AF output.

After 15 seconds of wonder, I turned the K3off, waited 30 seconds and
turned it back on. All was back to normal.

At one point, I heard a low rumble, like someone strong was tuning up on
me. But no. That immediately preceded the loss of AF.

After I turned it back on, after another 5-10 minutes, I again heard the
low rumble..but nobody tuning up on me...and this time, no loss of AF.

Again that same rumble happened again, but that time the AF went to about
50% but then came back after I transmitted a dit (just dumb luck timing?).

Have you heard any stories like this before or is this a novel experience?

Thanks
