Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 reduces power as it gets warmer?

2022-06-03 Thread Rick NK7I
Yes, the KPA1500 will drop 10% of the output, as it warms up. 1500 drops
to 1350, so you have to compensate with the drive.

I'm told this is typical of all solid state finals (my KPA500 did likewise).

If you're running the station remotely; bump up the fan speed to slow
the drop (or wear cans).

watts out.

I have a couple of questions about this (not a complaint by the way):

1. Does anyone else experience this?
2. Is it normal?

Industrial electronics vendors like Arrow, Digikey, and Newark sell
DE-DB connector inserts and shells, it should be possible to find cable
with enough conductors from the same vendors. One caution -- don't go
for the cheapest inserts -- the cheapies are hard to solder to and can
melt with the heat.

So I did a bit of measuring today. It looks like I only need somewhere around
10 to 13 feet of DE15 extension. Digi-Key sells the 15’ version for $21 (plus
shipping). A bit spendy, but if it keeps the amp far away from the shack I’ll
be happy…and so will the XYL . Getting the molded plug downstairs will be
a PITA, but I guess I can enlarge a couple of the ½” holes in the floor with a
dremmel or something.

into the relocated KPA-1500 in the basement, yes?

Yes, though it doesn't matter (electrically) which device connects with the
Elecraft AUX cable. You could plug the extension into the Y-BOX and the AUX
cable into the amp. FYI, the correct term is DE15 (sometimes HD15 for High
Density). No such thing as DB15 or DB9 though, they are commonly misused.

I can supply a 2.5' M/M cable from rig to Y-BOX if you need one.

[pjd] At the moment I have the Y-box plugged into the K3s, with one line going
to the amp, and a second line sending band data to my Ameritron RCS-12
automatic antenna switch controller at the base of the tower.

The controller (band decoder box) is usually located in the shack, with the
relay box outside. That should be more reliable.

At the moment I have no plans to replace that, despite the fact it’s basically
junk that doesn’t work automatically when the shack is below 65°F, which is the
case all winter long! But I’m trying to see why I would need to change out the
cable from the radio to the Y-box. Am I missing something?

If it's 5 ft long, that adds to the total length between K3 and AMP and RCS-12
controller. If you don't need 5 ft between rig and Y-BOX, replacing it with a
2.5 ft cable will reduce the the total length (and loss) by a little bit. But
it will probably won't make any difference.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 power supply cleaning

2022-06-03 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Yesterday, I finally took the cover off my KPA-1500 power supply, which
has been sitting on the carpet behind my desk for 2 1/2 years.  I have a
shedding dog and am not particularly fastidious, so I was worried about
diminished cooling.  I needn't have worried - the interior of the supply
looked just like new.  Now on to the RF deck, where I expect much more
crud to have collected.
