[Elecraft] Big Screen for K4

2024-01-30 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
I am in the process of listing my superb K3/P3 in order to purchase a K4. I
have watched Eric’s
Videos demoing the K4 and there is always a large screen display connected to
the K4. I planned
To keep my K4 setup clean and simple but the plethora of 24 inch TV’s on sale
for under $100
Is speaking to me.
So, I even think this is a dumb question, but if the std “video” port on the
back panel of the K4 can
Use a std cable to a TV set vs a “Monitor”, does the basic digital video
mirror the front panel display?
Thanks for any help.

[Elecraft] Microphone Setup Confusion

2023-05-16 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
Is what Elecraft calls mike “bias” in the K3 and K3s Owners handbooks
Equivalent to the “48 volt ghost voltage” required for condenser mikes et al
In the broadcast and music industry ?

It is mentioned that “mike bias” needs to to be turned on for condenser type
mikes
But off for dynamic types which is also equivalent for the more common
Term “48 volt ghost voltage”

[Elecraft] QRP and contesting

Yea Wayne, thats the terrific Elecraft attitude that keeps your customer base

Its called, “ lets all have fun and learn something” Hooray for the serious
high speed ops, a
Lot of ex Navy guys, but its pretty easy to spot the slow lane and ease back
into the fast lane.

Happy Veterans Day youse guys….K6ADG

I'm in this group. Casual contest operation, usually QRP, mostly CW, and almost
always logging by hand.

I greatly appreciate all of the very serious ops out there who approach this
with a high level of skill and give everyone -- regardless of ability -- that
next QSO.

[Elecraft] K2 Fixed Audio Mod

2022-04-16 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
I have a hamcrafters K42 CW Keyboard/reader that would go very well
With my 23 year old K2. I remember a kit-up article for a fixed audio output
Circuit for the K2. Can anyone point to that article?
If you have a clean little implementation of this item on a mini board, I would
be happy
To trade a finished but unused “K2 combo feature board” with the rework elim.
and
And mic.stickons. in an even swap.

[Elecraft] Help with the KX3 and FT8

2021-03-05 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
With FT8 coming on strong as a popular communications and testing tool, it is
tempting to dedicate your KX3 to this mode for a slice of time each day. There
has been little to no
update info for the KX3 with popular sound card interfaces (eg Signalink) as
well as suggested
settings for the KX3 and WTSJ-x itself. A little info would be very much

[Elecraft] XV144 External XVRTR connection to the KIO3B

2020-08-12 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
I have a finished and tested XV144 that was meant to pair with my K2 but issues
prevented me from
adding the necessary features to my K2. Here I am years later wanting to now
use this NIB XVRTR on
my fully upgraded K3 and the only “control” connection to the KIO3B seems to be
from the 144’s DB-9
to the KIO3B’s RS232/RJ45. I have alan extra Elecraft K3/P3 “X"cable (E980297)
which is the correct
form-factor. Will this work for me if I follow the rules in the K3S manual and
on page 5 of the XVRTR Users manual

[Elecraft] Using a K42 Keyer with a K3/K3S

2020-08-05 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
Yes, I had a K42 kit laying about and i thought I might finally finish it and
see how it worked with my K3 (with most of the S upgrades)
I was easily able to fix up the cables for reading code but I have had a heck
of a time matching up settings and keying cable connections
so I can play around with the external keyer functionality of this little
“swiss army knife keyer box”
I have Fred Cady’s third edition(Bless him) and he tries to give info in para 4
of page 60 but it is somewhat confusing. There is lots of info
following, all the way to pp 84 but it is all oriented to getting a computer
married to the K3 for digital modes.
The key out mini plug from the K42 uses the three lines as tip: key middle: PTT
and the body ground. They say that "the PTT output is
used primarily in HSCW mode or to key an amplifier or antenna relay” and the K3
manual indicates that anything like a WinKey
interface requires that PTT_KEY should be OFF - OFF. So, it would seem that I
could ignore the center conductor entirely.
But…my K3 sits quietly and challenges me to to key it externally disregarding
all my options.

Any suggestions appreciated. Alan/K6ADG

Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions for Introducing a 10-year-old to Amateur Radio and Electronics

2017-10-17 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
Here is one more approach:

I took a pine 1X2 and cut it into 3” pieces ; then screwed a couple of
Fahnstock clips into the
tops of each one near the ends. I then selected an assortment of 2 node
components plus a
pile of 6” cut copper wire pieces.
Whoopee…we could then make stuff…doorbell plus switch, simple diode rcvr, then
one with a
single transistor audio amp plus speaker (needs 3 NODE block), morse code key
and buzzer
etc etc
Tiny stuff can be intimidating…so the blocks fit his way of playing and we were
off and running.
A regen rcvr on a board for 40M can be a jump step and its all fun.

[Elecraft] WG0AT's KX2 matching unit

2016-11-12 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
WRT WG0AT’s video https://youtu.be/HkeZhnJo1g4
that Wayne Burdick just put on the group net,
It looks like the ubiquitis and handy BNC to banana plug adapter with a
miniature single sided UNUN to the antenna and ground.
I know there is no such thing, but the video only gave a peek. All I know is
that it is small, it looks like it has a minimalist matching
thingis and it works.
If Steve or any other good fellow could tell us what it is, I would be
interested. Mine always become more bigger and more complicated.

Cheers,

[Elecraft] KX3 Output power rating

2016-05-27 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
The KX3 is now being positioned as the 15 watt big brother to the smaller KX2
“up to 10 watts” version. The upper
limit on my KX3 power adjustment seems to have always been around 10.2 watts.
How does one safely achieve this
15 watt performance? Does it require the new/upgrade heatsink plus a new
firmware version? I have always used an
approx. 14 Volt power source.

I’m sure this has been addressed before but I don’t see the history…thanks for
any observations.

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3 Linux Utilities for Raspberry Pi?

2016-04-08 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
Please put me on the list of interested KX3 owners. The idea of Elecraft
maintaining and qualifying this software is great,
but there is a lot of it and it will incur costs. However…it could be a
productive and low cost path for Elecraft to evaluate
it’s next product line which could be a more highly integrated computer/RF
system. Even though I have been in this business
most of my life, I am still amazed at the capability one can have for
$35….almost enough for lunch for 2 in Silicon Valley.

Bill,
Your comment is appreciated. I am in your camp but we are a bit older and happy
with our
current campfire. Younger hams and new hams might be very engaged with a
touchscreen
interface. The “over $8 K” product managers seem to have peaked lately in their
“plethora of knobs"

regard to performance,

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Tokyo Hy-Power HL-1.2KFX amp interfacing (to ALC or not to ALC?)

2016-03-29 Thread Alan Geller via Elecraft
I have a THP HL-1.2KFX that I used before the acquisition of my K3. It is a
reliable and resilient amp and I have had the ALC connected to the K3 for a
year. However
I tend to take Don Wilhelms advice and there have been times when the ALC and
SWR inputs to the AMP’s logic seem to fight each other, so I just disconnected
the ALC and will report any issues….silence = happiness.

I mourn the the shutdown THP after the earthquake/floods. It was a terrific
company with a lot of great products with leadership in the mould of Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] Help with High Current issues

2015-01-11 Thread alan geller via Elecraft
Well, as soon as I sent my SOS, I realized I was telling all, I was too lazy to
switch to a beefier power supply to figure that out. Our course, your
suggestion solved that issue so I am getting double slow on the neuron
pathways. The voltage went from 13.5 V to 9.5V on the 6th (set for 20WPM) dash
and shutdown is around 9.2 V.Soo, my conclusion has to be that the SuperCaps in
my trusty small/expensive power supply are getting tired.I just this minute
read a review of the HPS by Phil Salas – AD5X, and he got a 2V drop at 10 WPM,
so my unit seems to be out of spec and that is a different issue for this
generally useful product.Thank you all for your quick response...Happy 2015

amplitude and distibution..just my experience. Better to look
for horses instead of Zebras :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Would a matching speaker be nice??

2012-04-22 Thread alan geller
Wayne, Eric and all us eager K3 owners,
How about a compromise between the factory and the customers which fits the
Elecraft Zen. Elecraft already has most of the the parts we want eg a set of
K3 side panels. The only 2 new parts would be a square cut front and back. The
front would have 4 holes and a domed grill and the back just needs a few
cutouts and maybe a stand added to the bottom (thats the left side K3 panel
with the rubber standoffs). That would then make a speaker/power supply cabinet
kit available for those who want it for no greater price penalty than
the K2 panel kit which we all think was a great idea.
Perhaps a small prize for the best implementation..the best 3 1/2 speaker and
PS combo. Lots of room for discussion..BTW, I'm sure this is not very original
and was
discussion by you fellows but the timing is good.
