Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 option's DSP firmware is open source
Actually Wayne (and others); Like others - I discovered this a few years back and made a private fork on github in October 2011. I took some time to really dig in an concluded that I didn’t have the right tools to do even basic experimentation. I applaud that you’ve made it public and I’d encourage Elecraft to continue in this spirit where it isn’t commercially to your disadvantage. I would also encourage using something like github as a great way to share the code that permits maximum utility for people trying to work with the code. This form of version control is radically different (and in most ways superior) to everything that has come before it. [ IF you aren’t using it in-house - it might be worth investigating if it is time to migrate from whatever you are using, to git.] I’ve helped a few major software development organisations move to git and the end results can be quite excellent. I certainly wouldn’t consider any other form of code control these days. ] Wayne ; Best wishes and I’m always willing to chat about this technology and how to use it within organisations. The other problem, at least in the UK, is that sourcing DSP chips in small quantities is likely to be difficult, and I suspect the programmers (hardware) are expensive, especially compared with those for low volume programming of the PIC. [Elecraft] K3 + P3 Combo Pelican / Hard Case
I have looked at the archives a little bit, but I haven't quite stumbled on a short and sweet paragraph or two about this. Has anyone selected and used a Pelican case to protect and transport a K3/100 + P3 combo. If so, what case did you choose? I've been looking at the 15xx (1550) and possibly the iM2500 cases; but they are quite 'tight' dimensionally. I'm interested in any experiences people have with: 1) Pelican Cases for a K3/100+P3 combo (I mention /100 because of the fans hanging back), and/or; 2) Experience with a similar but potentially less expensive option. I'd like to pack my radio up for the trip to G-land and select a case that would allow me to take the radio on a DXpedition at some point -- so an option is to expand the case size to include the power supply, etc. More than anything - I'm interested in opinions around how much space is needed to protect the radio, etc. Thanks Alan K2ACK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] creating an audio file to email
Todd; It is worth noting that there are a few parts to solving this problem. Audacity is a great software package, but it is only needed for the encoding of the file format problem. You can get the recording into your computer without anything else. There is a sound recorder utility included in Windows and on other platforms here are similar utilities. You can break this problem down into three parts: 1 - Connecting your K3 to your PC so the sound can be captured. (Requires cables discussed at length in the mailing list archives. Jim, K9YC has some sound and simple advice (no need for fancy sound interfaces if you are careful). 2 - Playing the recording without transmitting (TX TEST mode is useful here) and recording it on the PC in any format you can. 3 - Converting to a nice compressed format for email. You can do 2 and 3 together if you have the right software, but if you want to get it out of the rig 'now' you can defer step 3 until you have an audio transcoder like Audacity available to you. Just save the sample as a WAV file and test playing it back on the computer. You might find that this file is appropriate to email if you use an 8kHz sample rate… If you want to compress it for email, then you will need to use a transcoder (such as the functions built into Audacity, QuickTime or other examples)… There is no good reason to record the DVR output at anything higher than 8kHz sample rate, but 16kHz will be an appropriate amount of overkill. 44.1 and 48 kHz is just a waste of space. Re: [Elecraft] Semi-OT: Traveling by air with KX3 Buddistick
Nicklas; I've carried on my KX3 with NiMH batteries many, many times. Only once did they ask what it was - swab it - and carry on. I travel with either an Elecraft BL-2 and some random wire or a G5RVjr -- never looked at twice in dozens of flights. I have no data on a buddistick - apologies. I will note that some international locations get VERY upset over HTs - they likely ignore the KX3 because they do not identify it as a 'radio'. I had to negotiate for over 30 minutes to get my VX-8R permitted on the plane in Malaga, ES -- as the security people were adamant that no 'unlicensed, operational, walkie-talkies' were permitted. ... The HF gear has never raised any concern beyond the usual electronic device scrutiny level. For reference, I fly around 100K miles per year and take an HT and KX3 almost every time. [Elecraft] [P3] Use with K3.
All; I have a question about whether or not this is normal behavior and if it is, an explanation for the differences I'm perceiving will help me feel less inadequate about my knowledge here. After following the guidelines in the K3 and P3 manuals, I've calibrated the S-Meter on the K3 and the level calibration on the P3 (using an XG3 as the signal source). I notice that regardless of what I seem to do, the S meter reads 1-2 S units higher on the K3 than on the P3 'peak envelope' display. Is something amiss, am I misinterpreting things, or is there something I should check for? I have SMTR MD nor. SMTR PK Off. (but have tried with on). The K3 S-meter displays no bars with antenna disconnected and S-2 at 1uV and S-9 at 50uV as expected. The factory default settings for the calibration values more or less 'just worked'. The transfer gain in the P3 is set to -10bBm IIRC. Comments or thoughts anyone?
