[Elecraft] KAT 500 Firmware

I tried to install the new firmware this morning with the following error:

 

When the KAT500 utility connects to the port, it says unexpected device.  

 

Then I go to the main screen in the utility, and it is not reading any 
information from the KAT 500.  There is obviously no communication with the KAT 
500 in spite of the port being confirmed open.  No installed version info and 
Send Firmware is grayed out.

 

I tried the force firmware mode, but my manual led does not stop blinking until 
I remove power.

[Elecraft] K3S Shutdown

I’ve measured the P/S Voltages, I have 14.6 Volts according to the K3S.  I am 
beginning to think it’s the attached Win 10 computer.  This afternoon the 
computer went into sleep mode and the K3S shut down.  Maybe that’s it.

[Elecraft] K3S Shutdown

Station is in Standby, just listening when suddenly the K3S just turns off.  It 
turns on afterwards normally. Linear Power Supply is working (30Amp) and is 
still on.  NO RF being generated.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K3S Filter Problems

Thanks to all who assisted me.  I opened the rig and it turned out the filter 
offsets on the top panel label had the incorrect offsets.  Taking a look at the 
filters I found the real offsets, entered them in the Configuration and that 
was the solution.

[Elecraft] FW: K3S filter Problem

No Joy yet.  Two list members made suggestions, i.e. “Are the filters “ON”, 
yes, and perhaps mis-plugged, but I don’t see how that could happen and still 
fasten them to the board.  Anyone have another idea?  I hesitate to open the 
rig up, as I have the sub-rcvr installed and my 80 year old fingers have 
problems inserting the cursed TMP plugs.

[Elecraft] K3 Error IF1 HELP

 Please disregard my previous incorrect assumptions.  The KPF3A mod is 
installed correctly.  

However, after installing the KBPF3A I still get this error at power on.  I can 
find no information regarding correction or troubleshooting this error.  The 
old procedure has been removed from the K3 Menu List.

[Elecraft] IF1 Error after Installing the KBPF3A

Well I have a partially red face.  I apparently installed the modification 
capacitor incorrectly.  I don’t feel this is all my fault though.  My Main RF 
Board is Rev. B and does not look like the board pictured in the modification 
instructions.  With Main Board Rev. B, is this mod needed?

[Elecraft] IF1 Error after BPF3 Installation

I just figured out that the KNB3 Menu setting as recommended in trouble 
shooting this error, no longer exists.  I have removed and re-installed the 
KNB3 with no change.

 

I’m running out of ideas.

  After installing the KBPF3 is the K3, I now 
get IF1 Error.  Any suggestions, as de-installing the KNB3 means removing the 
KRX3 which is a real PAIN!!

[Elecraft] KRX3 TMP Connectors

I removed my KRX3 to install a new filter.  My problem is, I can't re-insert 
one of the TMP connectors. It simply doesn't seat.  I've inspected the Tip and 
it looks OK.

I'm 80 and don't have super hand strength, but the first connector went in 
normally.

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] Field Day in Germany

Is definitely not a contest.  Every club just decides with its members which 
weekend will be Field Day, not all clubs on the same day.  Then we find a 
location, set up the antennas and one or two stations in tents and away we go, 
everyone taking time as an OP.  This is usually accompanied by a Grill fest and 
of course in Bavaria, beer.  Families are in and out and some camp overnight.  
So we do it in the Summer.

I'm 80 with a marginal heart so I'm staying home.  So I hooked up my K1, yes 
K1, and tuned 20.  I hear OY1CT strong, banging the QSOs away at pretty decent 
clip.  Called him with my 5 watts, he sent DJ0?, I sent DJ0RD, he sent DJ0RD  
579 TU 73.  That's 2000 km. from my vertical dipole  He has a big antenna and 
very good ears 

[Elecraft] Upgraded K3 vs K4

I have upgraded my K3 with all possible K3S upgrades and in my urban 
environment it couldn’t get much better.  The K4 looks like a beautiful rig and 
I could afford it…but, I will be 80 in January so I consider how much use I 
could get out of a K4..:-(   If I see a barebones K3S at a good price though, 
hummm.

 

Or as my dentist said after installing a permanent bridge: “That’ll hold 10 
years so we’re on the safe side…”

 Use something like this with an RJ45 cable, no drivers required and all 
management via your shack computer.  I'm sure similar devices are available in 
the USA.

but the specs are international.

I use ours in our entertainment center, streams TV, Fire TV, Air Play, music to 
the AV Receiver, etc.  I use a 5-port small gigabit switch in front of it and 
everything has RJ45 cable.  If you use a switch, try to find one that has an 
all metal case for obvious reasons.

They’re not long gone, nowadays they call them Cinch connectors.  Not only Hams 
use them but most AVR and Stereo manufacturers.  Take a look at a High End 
HI-FI or AVR rear side.

[Elecraft] K3 Bricked HELP!!

Again thanks to all who replied.  Mike Cizek WØVTT reminded me of the little 
USB-USB/RS232  switch on the KIO3B to force a firmware load.  This worked 
immediately.  

 

I posted my BAD on the PTT floor switch (head hanging, red

face) which caused the ERR PTT.  Several guys pointed me in the right direction 
to isolate and correct the ERR PTT.  

 

As to the cause of the original problem with no reception on 14 and 24mHz, no 
idea.  It went away when I loaded a configuration file.

 

Boots, our new kitty, is innocent in this case and I apologized to him.  Boots 
has not apologized for bringing in a live mouse, chasing it behind the TV and 
pulling the SAT antenna cable out.

PTT ERR problem solved.  My face is deep, deep red.  The heavy plastic floor 
mat had slid up over the PTT footswitch.  I need to look at this KISS thing 
again.

[Elecraft] K3 Bricked HELP!!

Trouble started with no reception on 14 or 24 mHz.  Reloaded configuration file 
which got reception back, but had a continuous ERR PTT.  Attempted a complete 
firmware reload.  K3 hung at MCU LD with all buttons inoperative.  I then tried 
the recovery procedure in the K3 Utility Help section.  The K3 comes on without 
backlight, and transmit blinking and MCU LD in the display.  The K3 Utility 
cannot open the port.  I’m stuck.  This K3 has all K3S upgrades including USB, 
etc. I have also tried rebooting the computer with and without USB connected.

[Elecraft] K3 and K3S NB

Unfortunately our RF Noise Environment seems to be a constantly changing and 
growing challenge.  This explains why the NB appears to be not working as 
before.  I have a friend who suddenly had a really bad noise level.  Turns out 
his neighbor installed one of these Chinese multi-LED decorative lights.  A few 
years ago these LED Lamps were unknown, now they are everywhere.  I only buy 
name brand here in Germany as they appear to be clean.  The discount lamps 
radiate more than my K1.

[Elecraft] Entertaining Tales

Guys, W4MLE (SK) was just trying to tell me that Propagation and Antennas will 
always be waiting to surprise me by functioning unexpectedly. 

 

For instance, using a light bulb as a dummy load and having a QSO with the 
light bulb as my antenna.  Or calling CQ in the afternoon on 40m with 75 Watts 
into a low, more or less tuned dipole, and having I1ER come back to me as my 
very first Trans-Atlantic QSO.  I think that’s when the DX Bug bit me 

[Elecraft] Which Amp ?

 I'm like Igor, the SPE 1.3K fulfills my needs and it's one package
including P/S and ATU that I as a 78-year-old can easily lift.  My K3 at 10
Watts out drives it to full output!!  That's gain!!  I have a K3, P3 with
SVGA and the integration with the K3 is a simple cable and coax.  SPE even
includes the connector for making your own cable or the cable can be bought
for about $35.00 here.  

Unfortunately, the KPA1500 is handicapped here in Germany by horrendous
freight charges and 19%!! Value Added Tax on top if one is imported.  That
tax by the way, is on virtually everything sold in Germany, not just USA
products.

[Elecraft] Vanity Calls

I just had to put the German part in.  I originally had DJ0MBC, then we looked 
in the Netzagentur (German FCC) data base and found that DJ0BD and DJ0RD were 
free.  I thought DJ0BD would be confusing in Morse so I paid my €70.00 and got 
DJ0RD.  Unfortunately, the plate is tied to the car and car owner so if the car 
is sold or scrapped the number is retired.  German license plates are issued 
only with your local town or county abbreviation, a letter and a number.  

I have M-D5973. M for München and D for DeHaney, the rest...

[Elecraft] K2 DSP Real Time Clock

I cannot get the clock to work.  The RTC is "On", new battery, but the clock
display shows the battery as discharged. Otherwise the DSP seems to work
fine.

I have a P3 with the TX Mon option.  I have an LP100A sensor in my feedline.
Should the Tx Mon sensor be installed before or after the LP100A sensor, or
it doesn't matter?

is that when I use Data A mode I get no receive decode.  If I switch to USB

[Elecraft] Which MCU Version is the latest?

tells me only MCU version 5.60 is available. What to do?

wrench.  Go home and turn the bench grinder ON. The result isn't pretty but

[Elecraft] No Luck with CW Messages.

Please help, it must be 78-year-old pilot error.

Using the K3 Utility I programmed CW message 1 with a CQ message.
I programed CW message 2 with 5NN. I then saved both messages.

When I tap Message 1 I get a row of dashes and RX EQ 1 displayed.

When I tap Message 2 I get 10db and ATTEN displayed.

I am in CW mode and of course no playback.

[Elecraft] AA and AAA NiMH Battery Charging

There are chargers available which will do a controlled current re-charge
and let you match the battery voltages.   They are not cheap and not found
at your local electronics emporium.  As I recall, I paid about $55.00 for
mine.  I have one from a small German factory; it has an LCD for each
battery and gives various useful info about each battery.  It does give up
on some but saves a lot of others.  For me it was worthwhile; there are lot
of AA and AAA batteries in our household besides Ham Gear (GPS Receiver,
High powered camera flash, grandkid's toys, telephones, LED flashlights,
etc.).

I found a very nice, light but rugged pouch on Amazon that has some nice
features, including spots for a couple of Packtenna minis and accessories.
It?s not overly padded but rather intended to slip into your main rucksack
and not dig into you like a pelican.

Strangely enough all plumbing in Europe is still measured in inches, even in
Germany.  I guess they adopted plumbing from the UK and left it that way.  I
was very surprised when I went into a German hardware store the first time
to buy some pipe fittings.

[Elecraft] K3 NR

I have a K3 S/N 906 and a new FTdx-5000D side by side, same antenna, same
DSP filter bandwidth.  The NR on the FTdx-5000D is significantly better
IMHO. Easier to dial in (ergo metric) and much less harshness for lack of a
better word.   Once the FTdx-5000D NR is set up for band conditions, and
then disengaged, then engaged, the band noise, etc. just smoothly fades away
leaving the signal there with less distortion than the K3.  I live in a high
noise level urban environment by the way (Condo).

I use a Yaesu MD-100 and a short adapter with my K3.  The PTT and VOX work
fine, jog and up-down don't function.  The MD-100 is available used from
EB@y, and it is a very nice looking microphone IMHO.

[Elecraft] AFSK vs. FSK

As I recall from my 1960's USAF military electronics days, tests were made
comparing FSK versus the then new AFSK.  The result was that at the
receiving end both were equal, and you could not tell which mode was being
used.

[Elecraft] Elecraft QRO Amps

Having been in the business world for many years semiconductor and then
later IT, my experience says Elecraft management must, like any other
company, sit down with each new product proposal and make decisions.  If I
devote resources to development and tool a product (read $$$), based on
expected sales, when do we get the money back?  It's called ROI or Return On
Investment.

 

If this can't be clearly defined, then the project is usually killed.

[Elecraft] K3 Kit or Factory Built

I did the kit.

From the practical side, it's nice to know how it goes together if you have
to add something like the 2 Meters expansion, or add a filter, or do a mod,
or send a module back to Elecraft.

From the fun side it's nice to see all the bits disappearing and a K3
growing on the dining table.

You do risk certain looks and comments from the lady of the house if you
aren't moving along ;-)

[Elecraft] K3 Solder Help

I bought a Sennheiser Headset to use with my K3, and the stereo headset
audio plug is defective.  I wanted to put on a new plug and discovered to my
dismay that my 60/40 solder does not stick to what looks like a copper wire.
Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] OT Keyboard to save space

I use a small Cherry keyboard originally for a server picked up on Ebay.
These have a trackball integrated so you don't need a mouse flying around
the operating position and are meant to be in a pull out drawer in the rack
so are compact.

[Elecraft] While we are dreaming...

 In all this discussion of standalone, with a computer etc., why doesn't
someone come up with a universal configurable docking station?  I've got so
much plugged into my K3 (computer, microham band decoder, microham 2 Keyer+,
etc. that it takes me about an hour to get everything hooked up again.  I'd
love to be able to pop the rig out, do some portable operation, or a mod,
and just pop it back in again like my Lenovo Notebook.

[Elecraft] K3 Automatic Transmitter Calibration with TXG Error

I am performing this procedure with the ATU in Bypass, on K3 S/N 906 using
the very latest versions of all firmware and the K3 utility.  

While performing the 5 Watt calibration at 1.9 MHz I get a good 1.01 VSWR
into my dummy load and an indicated 5 Watts but Error TXG.

Also on the 5 Watt calibration on 50 MHz I get an Unexpected result and an
ascii string, with power settled at 4.4 Watts.  The calibration procedure
then concludes and the rig displays Error TXG.

At 50 Watts the calibration completes successfully with no errors.

What to do?

Old engineer says, If I can measure it, but not hear, taste, feel or see
it, do I care? 

I.E. my old ears cut off at about 12kHz, so I don't care if my stereo can
reproduce tones at 20kHz. 

I sometimes think we forget the fact that we are limited by our human signal
processing systems. 

A realistic example:  Precision pistols shoot far more accurately out of a
bench rest than any human will ever shoot with the same pistol.

[Elecraft] K3 Tuning Knob

The recommended K2 substitution knob is the main tuning knob from a Yaesu
FT-900, it's much heavier and has a nice feel.  I ordered mine from a German
Yaesu dealer.  

Hummm think I'll pull it off the K2 and see how it fits K3 S/N 906.

It looks very good, but the Gotcha is that it costs EURO 800 or $1040.00
including tax at the dealer here in Germany.  As near as I can tell that's
double the cost of the K3 2nd receiver.

Check the circuit diagram.  If they are using the same concept as in my ICOM
IC-2KL, then the amp has absolutely no protection without ALC.

Unfortunately S/N 906 did not include the 8 each 4-40 7/8 flat head black
screws or acorn nuts. 

These things are like hen's teeth in Metric Germany so I have my second
request in to Elecraft support (the first time I got 8 each short screws and
stand offs instead of...).

[Elecraft] K3 VCO CAL S/N 906

I am trying to perform the initial VCO CAL.  When I exit with MENU, the
calibration starts, runs rapidly up to 127, and then halts with VCO Error
5.  Any suggestions?  I have sent an email to K3 support, but they are
sometimes off on Sunday too ;-)

[Elecraft] K3 Temperature

To put this into context 37C is very warm, it isn't.  I used to do
elevated temperature dynamic burn-in on fiber optic RS-232 modules at 50C in
a precision temperature controlled oven.

You can take a 50C unit out of the oven with your bare hands and it is so
hot you drop it as fast as you can. :-) You can imagine what the junction
temperature of the solid state devices was ;-)

[Elecraft] K3 Assembly Special Tools or Gotchas

I had never seen a Power Pole connector and there are no specific
instructions except for soldering and contact alignment.  

My problem was inserting the small pin that holds the connector together.
At first I tried pressing it in using needle nose pliers and it spoinged
away in some direction.  I found it behind the couch 5 days later when it
refused to go into the vacuum cleaner.  The second time my lady found it all
the way across the room.

My solution was to align the connector halves, hold the pin in place with
needle nose pliers, and whack it with a small hammer.  Perfect!!

dampening mats with a sticky side that is exactly the solution.  Put part

This is happening to me too.  The digest is usually over 200kb and at the
truncation point there is a lowercase b. Sometimes it's something like
Donb.

Another advantage to being able to make this decision is that you no longer
have a doorstop when the manufacturer cannot or will not provide a
replacement for a defective display.  Ask the guys who bought the first
generation IC-756s.  Not to mention the additional complexity in the rig and
the associated costs.

I am receiving SOME digests truncated as shown here.  The size of the digest
is correct, but I can only read the first 3 messages as you can see.  My
Email client is Outlook 2007 (and no don't tell me I should use some other
client). I believe some character or string is being sent like a single
period in a line for instance, that tells the client to truncate the digest.
A Google search says other clients sometimes also have this problem.  Is
this a fix at the Elecraft end or at the Outlook end?  Suggestions welcome.

Hi all,
Can I redo the K3 config on 5W with the PA physically in place or do I 
need to remove it?  I am no at all happy with the output power so I want 
to go through the config again.  Like others, I find that on SSB, the 
output does not peak at all well.
TX ALC is on but my TXGN HP Pr80 is down at 20, much lower than I have 
seen in other reports.

[Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

The reviewer (Solardx, no call sign) gives a very bad transmitter (SSB)
review.  He claims lots of splatter and ineffective speech processing as
well as high IMD products.  I have yet to hear a K3 but no one else has
noticed such problems?

[Elecraft] K3 True RS-232 and USB to Serial Adapters

I haven't seen it mentioned, but if you have a standard tower computer,
there are RS-232 PCI cards available which give you 2 or 4 true serial
ports, and they are pretty cheap.  

My Ham Station computer is a Shuttle about the size of a shoe box, which
came with one serial port.  I added a card for two more serial ports and it
also has two USB ports rear and two on the front, as well as a 1 Gigabit
Ethernet card on board.  All the connectivity you could need.

[Elecraft] K3 My Order

So after following the reflector for about 2 months I did it!!  This morning
I ordered my K3 and made a 50% deposit.  My decision was based on my K2,
Elecraft and concept and the first reviews of the K3. Yes I know it may not
arrive in June, but in the meanwhile if sunspots show up, I have the K2, and
the FT-1000MP MkV which the K3 will replace.

[Elecraft] Motorola to Buy Yaesu

Motorola USA has announced its intention to launch a tender offer to acquire
a controlling interest in Vertex Standard Co, Ltd. Vertex Standard is the
parent company of Yaesu. Motorola will own 80 percent of Vertex Standard;
Tokogiken, a privately held Japanese company, controlled by current
president and CEO of Vertex Standard Jun Hasegawa, will retain 20 percent,
forming a joint venture. The total purchase price for 80 percent of the
outstanding shares on a fully diluted basis will be approximately US $108
million.

Somehow I don't think Ham Rigs will be a priority...

I don't understand the stress factor here.  The bands are in such dreadful
shape (at least from here in Germany) that you can turn on your radio (mine
are an FT-1000MP MkV and a K2) and you think the receivers are dead.  

I have a friend who has a Yaesu and Kenwood dealership, and he says guys
bring in their radios all the time because they think the thing is dead on
receive.  He says he can't even demonstrate most days and he has a real
antenna farm.

About the only band that is somewhat usable from here is the 40m band.

Of course some like to just sit and look at their new toy...

[Elecraft] D-Connectors and DIN Connectors

Never had any fail unless you count the one time I got heavy handed
connecting a VGA monitor :-( And of course the cable was soldered to the
monitor board.

And the JAs did NOT give us DIN connectors DIN is the abbreviation for
Deutsche Industrie Norm or in English, German Industrial Standard.
