[Elecraft] Fw: Visit to Elecraft HQ worthwhile?

2020-01-14 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
Very well said!!

2020, 1:04:19 AM CSTSubject: [Elecraft] Visit to Elecraft HQ worthwhile?
I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

I had been an SSB operator exclusively since I became a ham in 1982. I went QRT
for 7 years, because SSB grew stale for me. A little over 3 years ago I decided
to dust off my incredibly rusty/nonexistent CW skills and bought a preowned K2.
I had never heard of Elecraft before I reconnected with my CW friends who all
had Elecraft rigs.

Now I own a KX2 for portable use, KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 for my base station.
At 72 years old I decided to treat myself to  my first world-class rig by
becoming a member of the first shipment group for the K4.

The reason I give this background is because my 4 year journey to become a
dedicated cw rag chewer, comfortable at 20-30 wpm came about in part  because
of my love of operating my Elecraft rigs.  My renewed love of ham radio and CW
is intertwined with Elecraft and with what Wayne and Eric have created.

I will be driving from OR to So. Cal. in March on Hwy. 1.  I see it runs within
a stone’s throw of Elecraft’s HQ in Watsonville.

For those of you who have been there before, is it a worthwhile stop?  I don’t
expect to see Eric or Wayne there if I stop, but at a minimum I would like to
thank their fine staff for creating what has become an integral part of
renewing my love of our great hobby.

73,

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] Fw: Elecraft's market

2019-12-23 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
I also have had many radio's.. I was locked into Yaesu starting with the FT-102
and had all their models after that one until the K3 came out..I sold the first
K3 and went back to a FT-9000..it just did not do the job on CW as the first K3
I had so I bought a used bare bones K3 and filled it up with all the CW options
that I needed and will never have anything else. This is one of the best
options..you can buy a 10 year old radio and bring it up to date yourself.. It
may not be the best looking rig but it is by far the best CW rig I have ever
used for me! With the P3 and two speakers it will be my last rig..
I hope everyone has a Merry Xmas and a safe New Year...

Of all the radios I’ve purchased over the years, CW performance is a key
element in the decision.  I’m not a DX chaser, I’m not a contest operator, nor
a high speed operator.  There is nothing like sending and receiving good
quality CW.  Granted my fist needs improvement but what skill I have I do not
want it deteriorated by a poor quality radio in this regard.

Elecraft and one other US brand always has measured up to my requirements for
performance radios.

This is what I love about Ham Radio with a wire and on CW..Great story! I'll
never will use any digital modes and the K3 is my last radio..at 76 and on a

My question is, what model of K4 will supply the same blocking dynamic range
equal to or better than the K3S?  The K4HD?  I need RF protection!  Every day
is Field Day here.
On another topic, I took the advice of someone on this list who suggested my
best solution to my 12m antenna problem was to throw up a low dipole with
bubble gum and duct tape.  I threw up a 12m inverted V, apex at 18ft, ends at
about 12ft, with zip ties, a watering can holding down one end, a ladder on the
other, and a fiberglass mast tied to the wrought iron grating on the front
porch with clothsline (xyl lost her marbles when I said I was going on the
roof) in four back-breaking hours with big help from Terry, WB6PVU. RG8x
feedline coming through the front window with open coils on the living room
floor made the xyl ecstatic and kept the cats amused
Today I waited for hours for propagation to come up, and as soon as I could
reliably hear VP6R, I started banging away with the K3 and KPA500 squeakin'
from the freakin', steam coming off the rg8x.  Now I'm in their log on 12m cw!
Ham radio--still exciting after 47 years.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 VFO-B knob replacement notes

Hi,

Recently I purchased a K3 and found I need to give it some love as it
has been a bit behind on maintenance.

One of the issues is that the VFO B knob has cracked. This is Elecraft
part number E980090, listed as K3 spare part.

Unfortunately, that knob is no longer available, and here is where the
fun starts.

What is sent instead, is Elecraft part E980275. Both E980090 and E980275
are listed but only E980275 is available.
The replacement knob is smaller, the old knob is 1 3/8", the new knob is 1".

Just replacing the knob won't work because the felt washer sticks out.

Also, the encoder is too long and the new knob sticks out - the felt
washer doesn't work.

Called Elecraft sales and there is some confusion.

The errata of the build instruction of the K3S (not K3) explains what
has happened:
- The new knob is smaller
- it needs a different felt washer, replace E700033 with E700416
- the encoder needs an additional lock washer, E700150.
- So, if you order a replacement, order all of this and plan to have to
take the front panel apart.

None of this is on the elecraft website. I also did not find anything in
the reflector archives. And it's not in the K3 documentation, only the
K3S documentation.

This is kind of painful, since in addition to the price of the spare
parts I ordered to get the K3 up to date ($173) I spent $80 on shipping,
customs and postal admin overhead and I now find I have an incomplete
mod kit.

I will need to cut the wrongly-ordered felt washer to size and find a
replacement lock washer to make the encoder sink deeper to match the new
knob.. Again, this isn't listed in the spare parts on the website or on
the reflector; it is now documented on the reflector, at least.

Geert Jan

while it was a nice keyboard, RF kept getting into the keyboard buffer no
matter what I did. I tried toroids, chokes, you name it. It'd start shoving
spurious noise into the character stream, keeping it from finishing in PSK
or CW mode. When I switched to a 2.4ghz model, it works perfectly. Don't
use Bluetooth, as there's no way to enter the pairing code, so it won't
work.

This is the one I got:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0787G1YFG

I got 2.4ghz Amazon Basics keyboard for it. I tried a wired keyboard, and
while it was a nice keyboard, RF kept getting into the keyboard buffer no
matter what I did. I tried toroids, chokes, you name it. It'd start shoving
spurious noise into the character stream, keeping it from finishing in PSK
or CW mode. When I switched to a 2.4ghz model, it works perfectly. Don't
use Bluetooth, as there's no way to enter the pairing code, so it won't
work.

This is the one I got:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0787G1YFG

2019-05-05 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
I for one would not have a touch screen on a radio..Keep the radio as it is
with add-ons..Come out with a touch screen like the P3 with added features. I
like the fact you can add a keyboard now with the rig..Keep it modular where
you can add it if want it..For god sake don't be like the others..THIS IS WHAT
GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE NOW!! Different and outstanding!

Elecraft  have master engineers.  100W is plenty for me.   I can always add an
amp.   We are all different.   Please stay with external power supplies. The
large screen external VDU is excellent for the P3.   I like the external P3.
A panadaptor is not needed in many operations but it is a truly useful
feature. Please keep the pod.Maybe there can be further enhancement for digi

will stick with the high portability/low power consumption design. Those things
aren't really important to me. I wouldn't mind a larger rig. We're dedicated to
providing gear that won't break your back, runs efficiently, and can be used
for portable applications when needed (Field Day, DXpeditions, emcomm, RV,
etc.). A new radio would have be somewhat bigger to accommodate a large
display, but it would not have to be twice as large, weigh 2 to 3 times as
much, or consume 3 to 4 times as much power as a K3S. All of the K3S's newer
competitors have one or more of these non-portable characteristics, and some
have all

Re: [Elecraft] New Product and K4 Suggestions.. NO K4!!

2019-03-26 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
This is the best idea so far..Do not come out with a K4..just keep giving us
plug-in improvements..No one wants a out dated radio. The big three are just
now starting to catch the K3..Sure from a marketing stand point coming out with
a new radio is a great idea..more money coming in... I did not buy a K3 for it
looks!! I do not like fancy display's or touch screens..I want a top performing
radio that I can up-grade myself or send it in to be upgraded..I have a 1440
serial radio..old..no upgrades that I just sent it and spent $3500.00 dollars
on..I could have bought a TS890..but I love what I have and I have the best in
a old 1440 radio...that is what I love about Elecraft!!

In reading the K4 product suggestions posted so far, noise blanker/noise
elimination seems to be a common thread. I have written in the past about the
need
for improvement in the NB and NR on my KX3. I would like to see Elecraft come
out with a really affective noise reduction unit (can be stand alone).
It could combine improved versions of the NB and NR, a phasing unit (like the
MFJ 1026-which really works well), and audio filtering. With all the noise on
the bands lately, this would be welcomed in the marketplace.
As far as the K4, the most common suggestions seem to be to change the
color of the display, get a monitor screen / blend the P3 and K3. All front
panel issues.
While Elecraft has featured the modular approach, I think expanding on this
might be the key to pleasing a variety of tastes in a cost efficient way. Have
two choices of front panels that
tailor the K4 to different displays and knobs vs touchscreen. The transceiver
internals could continue to be modularly upgraded (like the K3 to K3S) and the
front panels could be made
backwards compatible to the K3/K3s in the Elecraft tradition. This would place
the upgrades in an affordable price band and could be done incrementally.
Most hams can afford $1000 to $2000 but not $5000+.    73 Mike KF6KXG

Here's the story. It's an odd one. Hope you don't mind a little rambling.

The Barred Owl Radio Club W4OWL got together in Floyd, VA last year for a
great Field Day. All the rigs were Elecraft Kx3 running QRP battery and it
was an fantastic event for a small group of friends.

Not long after Field Day I came across a fellow that does watercolor
drawings for business. Out of the blue I asked him if I could send him some
pictures of our event and get his interpretation of it. He was all over it!
For months we went back and forth and, in the end, I not only got a
wonderful watercolor original and some prints for the rest of the team but
he added an additional drawing which actually seems a bit more
Elecraft-focused... so not so OT.

Now I just got an email from the artist. He sent me a link to a magazine,
something fairly obscure and not my style but who cares. The cool part is -
well look at the link and turn to page 8.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eckDYihssqMTqQKhpPr71PYeiZ0HWOZt/view?usp=sharing

That was the special bonus drawing he sent me.

Here's the actual watercolor commissioned for the event.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R1zt1PincjMYW7snRDQ7MGHWIp6djWYp/view?usp=sharing

I think I'm going to miss Field Day with the team this year but have to
say... last year was so full of memories (ups - being with friends, first
satellite contact for any of us; downs - My pug Ginger  (aka Suga Puga
passed away that weekend) it will always be remembered. I hope you enjoy
these pictures. I hope the links work.

[Elecraft] K4

2018-05-19 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
WOW..Some people are just not happy no matter what they have!! I have a used K3
1440 with no upgrades..no tuner..no second receiver.. 400 cw filter, and I'm
very happy with it and lucky to have it and it works great for me.. Sold my
5000 to buy this and glad I did.. best CW rig ever..I would be happy with a
loaded K3!! Do not want to be like Icom and come out with a new rig every
year..

[Elecraft] VFO TRACKING

2018-02-28 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
I have looked in both manuals to find out how to stop VFO A and VFO B tracking
together..one follows the other and it only does this on 20 meters. The radio
does not have the second receiver. I'm sure the manual tells how to set it up
but I can not find it. This is a early radio but I sure do like it!! Any help

Just be SURE to get the latest version of the utility, then make a
baseline backup to start from and once all is set as you wish, make a
'default' to fall back on.  It doesn't take much disk space to make
backups, so you can make several (rename them to make sense to you).

Bob,

That must have been set on by the prior owner.
Had you done an EEINIT, it would have wiped those menu items back to
factory defaults.

You might want to go through the menus (both user and CONFIG) to see if
the other menu setting match your operating preferences.
That is a part of "getting to know your K3" - especially important when
buying a used one.  You never know why the prior owner had selected
particular menu items.

That kit from OHR looks nicely done.  I wonder if the pcb was immersed in a
gallon can of mineral oil instead of the included case, how much more power
could it withstand then?  5x-10x maybe?  I could use the enclosure for
something else. Otherwise I'd get a full paint can kit off ebay for about the
same $.

Ummm ... several reasons.  Resistance component of an incandescent bulb
impedance varies with the temperature [brightness] of the filament.
They are also somewhat reactive.  Push-pull vacuum tubes and link
coupling didn't care about SWR, I don't even remember the term in the
ham lexicon until the Pi-network and 50 ohm output was invented.

They're also not very good at the dummy part.  N6BT, of Force 12 fame,
is fairly famous for his phased illuminator, 3 300 watt bulbs mounted
on his deck railing in a V arrangement on which he worked all
continents.  More than once I made contacts while using a 100 watt bulb
as my dummy load.

If you're going to use the paralleled metal film resistor construction
method, be sure to keep the resistor leads short and spaced them from
each other.  Lead inductance will start to become a factor on 6 m and
up.  I built mine with 40 2K 2W resistors and it works find at 100W if
used intermittently.  It's air cooled.  Don't know how much putting it
in oil would improve the dissipation.

[Elecraft] CW

2015-03-23 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
This is the most amazing radio I have ever used on CW. I have had a lot of
Yaesu rigs from the 9000 on down, and this is by far the best on CW.. I did not
want to try this radio out because of its size with a mind set of large rig's.
But I bought it in Feb along with the P-3 and what a radio!! Hat's off to the
Elecraft guy's!   73s Bob W5RG

[Elecraft] TUNING PULSER

2015-02-17 Thread Bob Gibson via Elecraft
I have what I think is a problem with the K3 or me.. I use a tuning pulser to
tune my amp.. I turn the power down to 10 watts output on the K3 key down. If I
use the pulser now to adjust the amp the power will go up slowly to over 100
watts.. I have tried either plug on the back of the K3 but get the same
results. What do I need to do to get this pulser to work right?   73s Bob W5RG

Most any microphone can be used as long as it has the proper pinout on
the mic plug.
If you do not want to re-wire the plug, look at microphones for Kenwood.
Heil has Kenwood adapters that work fine with the K3. but IMHO, Heil
microphones are overpriced.

Subject: [Elecraft] CW for those with Poor Hearing

While in the Navy I damaged my hearing from exposure to loud noises (Naval
Aircraft)Since then I've always had a real struggle copying CW (but I'm
stubborn and keep trying)

I was playing around with the pitch and found that the higher frequency
toneshave a ringing to them but as I went lower in pitch the ringing faded
quite a bit.
So I'm basically looking for tips to help me to be able to copy better.
Thank you

Bob,

You apparently have selected a transmit filter for CW that is too narrow.
The transmit filter for CW must be the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz filter.

Bob, I second all the suggestions. Particularly, having just built a K3 and
adding the second receiver,
one must be patient and work slowly..in order to not overlook slight
things that matter.
I suggest that you read each step, think about it, and then read it again as
you complete it. Be ready to
ask yourself the question, what does that abbreviation say or meanthen
use the manual to look up
each bit a jargon you're now seen or don't remember about. Then go back and
read the step again and proceed.
Slow and careful - and enjoy the process - results in a working unit.

Have a super day. Phil, W0XI, K3 and P3 owner.
