Re: [Elecraft] K-Line / ZeroFive Antennas

2021-06-28 Thread Craig Smith
Jim …

How well it “works” will be almost entirely dependent on the radial system you
have installed and on the local noise level. I’d recommend at least 32
radials - as long as you have space for. On or in ground is fine.If you do
that, the performance and patterns should be approximately like the charts
shown in all the handbooks for verticals over a ground plane.

If you are asking about the ability of the tuners in the Elecraft products to
accommodate the mismatch on each band, that is a different question. In
general Elecraft’s tuners will handle up to a 10:1 SWR.

[Elecraft] External sound card advice needed to attach to K3

2021-01-01 Thread Craig Wissman
Sorry to trouble you folks. I’m sure this is a well worn path.
Trying to figure out what current sound cards will work with my older K3.
Online equipment refs I’ve discovered are either out of date or inconsistent.
I’ve been trying to follow Max George’s(NG7M) March 2018 1:55min YouTube
instructions. Also info from AA5AU and N1MM tutorials.
Tried to search this post archive but find doing it by subject matter doesn’t
seem to work. Having to dig through monthly summaries.
Trying to get setup with N1MM/MMTTY K3 serial port vintage with dual rcvrs.
Windows 10 desktop.
Plan to start out with FSK and maybe dabble with other chat related digital
modes down the line.
Can anyone point me to current sound card best practices?
I have a 2006 vintage Signalink used years back but seem to we warned not to
bother…

[Elecraft] T1 Tuner green/yellow flashing LEDs

2020-12-15 Thread Craig Vonilten
I just finished building my T1 kit. As with their other gear, top notch
instructions and quality. A very solid design. Power up and test all
appear to be functional, although I've not tuned any radials yet, since I
wanted to step through the testing. Everything appears nominal including
the inductor testing. However, when I tested the bypass (IN/OUT) feature,
the green/yellow LEDs rapidly flash (alternating pattern). Pressing (and
holding) the BYP button will hold one or the other LEDs, with the pattern
starting as soon as the button is released. No other button combination
seems to stop or correct this condition. I expected to be able to press BYP
to select IN or OUT and have a steady green or steady yellow (indicating the
bypass condition). I have to remove the battery to reset the tuner and
recover from this flashing LED condition. As stated, I have not tuned a
load yet. Is this normal?

You are looking in the right place, in my opinion, with Siglent, Rigol, etc.
Another brand to look for is Hameg. They all offer lots of features and
value for the $$.
Great buys on Spectrum Analyzers there also, by the way ;>)

Back when I had my lab I had Agilent scopes, but if I were doing it over today,
I’d go with something like the above.

If you aren’t familiar with it, check out Dave Jones’s EEVBlog podcast. He has
dozens of detailed reviews of these scopes which include HD Video teardowns of
the internals as well as analysis of the circuitry. Should be available at
your favorite source of podcasts.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 purchase considered

2020-11-21 Thread Bert Craig
Greetings to all,

My K2/100 ser. no. 3595 has served faithfully with nary a niggle for almost two
decades now. It did receive a thorough alignment and 60m upgrade, courtesy of
Don Wilhelm, approx. two years ago. It now excites an Ameritron AL-80BQ.

I also own a Yaesu FT-991a (Purchased for its VHF/UHF SSB/CW capability.) While
on paper, the newer rig's rcvr should handily outperform the older K2, it
doesn't to my ears. The K2 is more pleasant to listen to and has, on at least
one occasion, "heard" a DX sig that the Yaesu simply didn't using the very same
antenna and comparable rcvr settings.

I doubt anybody would be disappointed with the K2's performance, particularly
on CW. Best of health and happy holidays to all.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 S-meter characteristics

2020-04-24 Thread Craig Smith

It is very true that - in a contest situation - we aren’t often concerned with
measuring signal levels. No argument.

And, if contesting, DXing and rag chewing are all you use your K3 / K4 for,
then I understand why you aren’t interested in the additional bells & whistles
that are being discussed here.

But many of us use the K3 / K4 for other purposes also. Even with the current
implementation in the K3 / K3S, the dbm referenced signal measurement
capability is extremely useful. My K3 was invaluable when I had an
electronics lab as a very sensitive and selective calibrated RF voltmeter.
Used it constantly both for design and for troubleshooting during many
construction projects.

I think the kinds of enhancements being discussed here will be a valuable
addition to the K4 and encourage additional discussion.

[Elecraft] FOR SALE - KX3 - As New

2019-12-12 Thread Craig Slawson
I have for sale an 'as-new' KX3. I purchased it in early October this year
before I had achieved my license - as a result, I have never transmitted on
this radio. The reason I’m selling it is because a good friend of mine knows
the family of a Silent Key who has a K3 that I can purchase for a ‘song’.
Likely I’d never take the KX3 out of the shack anyway so a K3 will siut my
needs better...

This is my original order from Elecraft:

SS30DV_SS30DV Compact Switching Power Supply1$119.95
MH3_ MH3 Hand Microphone (KX-LINE)1$69.95
KX3-PCKT_Accessory Cable Kit for KX31$24.95
KX3-F_KX3 160-6M Transceiver, Factory Assembled1$1099.95
KXAT3-F_20 Watt Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner (Factory Installed)
KXBC3-F_Internal NiMH Charger / Real-Time Clock (Factory Installed)
KXFL3-F_KX3 Dual-Passband Roofing Filter (Factory Installed)

As one would expect, everything is in MINT/PERFECT condition.

I’ll also include a kit I purchased from Amazon ($79.00) for the KX3 which
includes: aftermarket black CNC machined aluminum side plates (with handles)
and heat sink, clear protective cover and canvas bag for radio. These items are
uninstalled.

I have about $1800.00 invested - I’ll let it all go for $1500.00 (or reasonable
offer) and include CONUS shipping.

Any questions, please call, text or email. Pictures available upon request.

Best,

Thank you, Jim. I'll keep that in mind re. the bonding. The antenna mount is
likewise grounded to the vehicle chassis and the power is indeed run directly

The right place for serious TX chokes is at the antenna feedpoint, NOT
at the rig.

Proper bonding in a vehicle is different from bonding in a fixed
station. In general, rigs should NOT be bonded to the vehicle chassis,
and contrary to what is written on the site of a so-called mobile
authority, DC power should be a pair run directly from the battery,
ideally a twisted pair. Fundamental reason is that bonding the rig to
the chassis provides a loop return path for noise and coupling RFI
to/from the vehicle's computers. Also, the rig is not the source of RF,
it's the antenna!

What if you're running a KW, and gave a call on 20M. Suddenly, the guys
brakes in the vehicle next to you locked up causing a multiple vehicle

I realize this is an extremely hypothetical and unlikely case, but these
smart vehicle computer systems can't be all THAT immune to all sorts of RFI.

I know the cruise control my 2000 Dakota would mysteriously jump 5 MPH if I

It would return to it's previous setting when I un-keyed. VERY
disconcerting eh?

This begs the question: Why KX3s with KPA500s? That is what I use in my
mobile station and it provides about 250W due to the FCC amplifier gain
requirements. I am fine with it, as that is what I have and higher power may
affect the vehicle. I have seen someone post a modification to remove an
attenuator in the amp and recalibrate the power meter, but I would assume
that Elecraft will not be allowed to do that, as the FCC Cert holder.

All future Elecraft radios will have the same “designed-by-CW-ops” performance,
and the same attention to detail in CW controls, regardless of any new
technology we incorporate. They will have to pass our own rigorous testing. And
they will certainly not exhibit any of the deficiencies mention in the

Re: [Elecraft] Out with the Old

2019-04-01 Thread Bert Craig
Great commentary on the venerable K2. I had an experience that some on this
reflector might find interesting. I purchased a Yaesu FT-991A solely for the
purpose of VHF/UHF SSB/CW. (Our local group's been buggin' me to join them
on 2m SSB, hihi.)

Well, I saw C8T on the cluster and decided to give them a call. I wanted to
try the FT-991A on hf, so I unscrewed the PL-259 from the back of the
K2/100, moved it over to the Yaesu, and tuned to 40m. Nothing heard. I made
sure the filter selection was correct, toggled the IPO settings, etc., still
nothing. Switched back to the K2/100 (S/N 3595, fresh from a Don Wilhelm,
W3FPR, thorough upgrade and alignment.) and voilà, there was C8T. Oh it was
weak, to be sure, but readable and subsequently in my log.

I mentioned this to Joel Hallas, W1ZR, during an email discussion re. his
FT-991A QST review and he commented that, while the K2 is a fine radio, he
was surprised. I'm not, the K2's still higher on the Sherwood Receiver Test
List for a reason. (Albeit that ranking's just by close in Dynamic Range,
DR3.) I'll eventually get a CW optimized K3S, however, I'll always love my
K2/100.

Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4

2019-03-25 Thread Bert Craig
I'm in the same boat with a "slush fund" specifically created for a loaded
CW-optimized K3S. However, two factors keep me from pulling the trigger on that
purchase. The main subject re. the possibility of a K4 and the fact that my
K2/100 performs so darn well.

Additionally, I personally find the amber display a tad tough on these old
eyes. As minor as it sounds, I might have purchased a new K3S last year upon
fund maturity had a green display been an option.

I purchased A Yaesu FT-991A for VHF/UHF SSB work some months ago. On HF, the
K2/100 still "cleans it's clock!" One time, I tried to locate a DX station
spotted on the cluster but couldn't hear it. Removed the PL-259 from the
FT-991A and moved it directly over to the K2/100 and voilà, there it was. Weak
but readable, and subsequently wrkd. Not too shabby for an almost-20 yr. old
rig.

Re: [Elecraft] Why are the batteries internal to the KX3?

2019-03-17 Thread Craig Temple via Elecraft
Chuck,

I ordered my KX3 without the battery charger with the specific intention of
never putting batteries into the radio. I have seen too many products
destroyed over the years by defective batteries. In addition, splitting the
halves which are connected by a ribbon cable seems too much wear and tear for
my dollars.

My only option for HF is portable on local hilltops.

I bought two Bioenno Power BLF-12045W - a bit costly - well worth it to me.
They arrive with anderson powerpoles on the output. These batteries stay above
12v for more than 3hrs with an 80/20 listen/transmit operation - this keeps my
KX3 at the higher output wattage. I recommend Bioenno's charger for their
batteries.

Hope this is helpful.

I don't like to disassemble the KX3 to
take out the batteries when not using or to do battery
 maintenance.
I would rather have a slim case with
the same rectangular outline as the KX3 that attaches to the
rear panel and just plugs into the KX3 thru the external DC
 input.
Has anyone done that as an accessory
 product?

Re: [Elecraft] I am flummoxed about my antenna

2018-12-01 Thread Craig Smith
Lee …

You’re on the right track with changing the coax. You have some sort of
resistive loss. As you note, the “bandwidth” is much higher than it should be.
My inverted L had a 2:1 SWR bandwidth of perhaps 35 KHz at most. Your low
SWR across the entire band indicates very low efficiency and some sort of loss
element(s).

After the coax, I’d look at connectors, insulators, etc. etc. Do you have any
feed-thrus, suppressors, or other things in the feed system?

I’d suggest first checking the SWR and bandwidth right at the antenna base with
the coax disconnected. Use a portable instrument.

Good Luck!

[Elecraft] Off Topic: Fluke Multimeter for Sale

2018-09-11 Thread Craig Smith

I have for sale a like-new Fluke model 87-V multimeter along with extra
accessories. This is the industry standard handheld meter for electronics
work. 4.5 digit display, 0.05% accuracy, extensive capacitance measuring
capability, temperature measurement with included probe and legendary Fluke
quality / reliability / durability. This model is still in production today
and is Fluke’s top-of-the-line electronics handheld meter.

I purchased this new in 2010 and it has since been used only in my lab while I
had my consulting business. I’ve since retired and moved to a condo, so no
longer have need for an instrument of this accuracy. This unit is in mint
condition. It has always worked perfectly.

Your purchase includes the meter, all original accessories including probes,
the thermocouple probe, original box, manual, paperwork and DVD. I’m also
including another like-new set of Fluke industrial probes with interchangeable
tips, including alligator clips, clamps and clip-on hooked probes. Also
included are some Probe Master mini-clip-on probes, BNC adapters, etc.

The street price for this meter is currently $387.I’m asking $220 for the
meter, accessories and additional extras including USPS insured Priority Mail
shipping to the lower 48.Payment via PayPal. Photos by request. Contact
me via email if interested. My email address OK on QRZ.

Frank,

The K2 had backlighting since Day 1. You could turn on/off the
backlighting by selecting the menu LCD Nite or Day.
For the K1, it was an option that was developed some time after the K1

Get the 1.8 if you work ssb. Experiment with shifting the pass band for

Re: [Elecraft] OT: 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 power outlets

2017-06-27 Thread Craig LaBarge
Gene:

I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 double-cab. The 12V outlet on the dashboard
is on all the time. There's one inside the center console and one on the
rear of the console (for rear passengers) that are switched.

I don't know what the current ratings are but I use the one in the rear to
power my Yaesu FT-8800 dual-band rig at full power (50W on 2M) with no
issues. I occasionally use the one on the dash to power an APRS tracker (8
watts).

I haven't used an HF rig with the power outlets but on VHF/UHF I have no
detectable noise. Again, I don't know if that would be the case at HF.

Hope this helps.

I agree 100%! It's really a form of bullying censorship. Learn how to set up
rules in your e-mail client. Failing that, use the 'Del' key. Geez!

Imagine coming across a QSO ota that we don't want to participate in. Rather
than QSY, we ask the active participants to cease their QSO. Ick!

note : personal reply

Wow ... somebody writing an off topic post (it had nothing to do with
Elecraft products) to complain about off topic posts. Talk about
dripping with irony.

Besides, it is a trivial exercise to speed read through the topic
headers and delete the messages you don't want to see. I mean really
trivial. I can scan through well over 100 messages messages per day
from various lists in about thirty seconds. You spent enough time
writing your post and reading the responses to it to cover about a
month's equivalent.

Your post merely sounds petulant. Grow up.

Re: [Elecraft] Dimmable LED desk lamp for operating position recommendation needed

2017-01-06 Thread Craig Smith
Greetings Peter …

Have a look at this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Dimmable-Stoog-Brightness-Rechargeable-Adjustable/dp/B01CSHZ99Y/ref=sr_1_10?s=home-garden=UTF8=1483715928=1-10=usb+led+desk+lamp

I’m not claiming this is the highest quality lamp ever made. I also do not
currently have a way of assessing the EMI situation with your setup. However,
it is an amazingly versatile lamp and well worth the $13 price! Even if you
select something else, you may want to have one of these around for other
purposes.

Some of the things I like about it:

Very small and light and easily moved around for the task at hand.

Convient recharge from any USB port.

3 selectable light intensities.

Very long time between recharges. I use mine fairly intermittently, but get 2
or 3 months usage on a charge.

For $13, it can be considered a throw-away item if you don’t end up liking it.

Re: [Elecraft] Sloping Terrain vs Feedline Losses

2016-07-12 Thread Craig Smith
Ted …

I think you are overstating the coax losses. Even stock RG-11 should be
perhaps 0.3 dB/100ft on 80 meters - around 1.5 dB for the 500 ft. run.

Even so, I would probably gravitate toward the closer location. With the
elevated radials, the effects of the ground conductivity should be minimal.
Not sure if ON4UNs data assume elevated radials or many on-ground radials. It
could be that his estimate of the sloping ground advantage is for the later.
With the closer location, you will have perhaps 1 dB stronger signal in all
directions because of the lower feedline loss.

For casual CW, the K2 sounds and performs. Sometimes I daydream about a
K2s upgrade kit. Finer tuning, encoder controls, Band memories, all those
aftermarket mic, level out, an 1/8 phone jack, modern internal battery. Oh
and easily adjustable DSP filtering.

A K3 is out of my range, well maybe a well used one someday.

For QRP contesting, and scanning the bands for signals, nothing beats the
KX3, Win4K3 and a good sound card for the Pan adapter. During CWT the
signals were tight, but hardly a click with the filter tightened. A great
value.

Building most of the accessories for my K2/10 and almost all worked
immediately! I am still pleased to share it in my station report during
rag chews.

Anyway, Thanks Eleccraft team the fine rigs.

Re: [Elecraft] PL-259 connectors

2016-05-19 Thread Bert Craig
I used Amphenol exclusively until they moved their manufacturing from the USA
to Mexico. Now the 83-1SP is no longer stamped, (Engraved.) its printed. (Ink?)
Same quality? It could be, but it doesn't appear to be. (Cheaper
phenolic/Teflon?) I have a sizeable stash of USA-made Amphenol and J (NJ)
connectors.

This is very much on topic wrt Elecraft products since, with the practice of
outsourcing local jobs offshore, there is some additional satisfaction that the
majority of my hard earned money will trickle down to a dinner table in NJ,
Tennessee, or... Aptos, CA.

Some naysayers will say that there will always be more convenient offshore
sources and they'd be correct, but you do what you can. If not now, then when?

little better on my K3S compared to my K3, but still kind of shrill and
fatiguing to listen to for long periods of time. I'm not sure it'd be worth

Re: [Elecraft] Filtering RFI from LED & flouresence Dimmer Switches

2016-01-26 Thread Craig Smith
Thanks for the garage door opener experience. I had my door and opener
replaced a few months ago. The manual for the opener (Lift Master)
specifically says not to use LED bulbs. I was scratching my head over that
but did use CFLs in the opener. I asked the installer why that recommendation
was there, and he said he didn’t know why LEDs couldn’t be used. But, as your
experience shows, it appears that it can indeed be a problem. Probably the
close proximity of the opener receiver to the poorly filtered (for some bulbs)
switch-mode converters in the bulbs.

Hi Gerald,

I own a large lot with 2 tall trees that could accommodate an 80 meter dipole,
and with the cooperation of a friendly neighbor, I could fit 160 meters using
his large tree across the back of his property. My trees run east to west and
using the neighbors tree I can run north to south. I'm located almost right in

Performance is the driving factor, but I world like to stay under $500 for the
antenna itself.

BTW, I ordered my KX3 with the internal antenna tuner and roofing filters.

Re: [Elecraft] LED Lamps and HF RFI?

2015-05-11 Thread Craig Smith
You are wise, Ted, to be cautious about this.

As you implied, it is not the LEDs themselves but how they are driven.

LEDs are current driven devices and, for a given intensity, are typically
driven by a constant current source. In the case of a panel LED in a K3 or
whatever it is easy to do this by just using a series dropping resistor as an
analog current source and not worrying about the lost power in the resistor.
This approach will be quiet in terms of RFI.

In home lighting applications, the currents are higher as are the desires for
high efficiency and minimum power loss. So a switching regulator type of
current source is employed, either on a lamp-by-lamp basis or be connecting
several lamps in series with one current source. The switch mode current
source can indeed be noisy. Even though in theory it could be made fairly
quiet by means of good layout, control over wave shaping, extensive filtering,
and high quality compliance testing, all of that typically does not happen in a
cost-driven application such as home lighting.

You asked for people with good data. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.
I'm not even sure if good data exits on lighting RFI in a real-world
applications.Even if a manufacturer characterizes the EMI performance in a
data sheet, things are sometimes cost reduced later in manufacturing (less
filtering) and can also be compromised by improper installation and grounding
by a contractor.

Conceptually, I'm a big fan of LED lighting and have several types in various
places in the house. But back when I was active on the air I made sure that
I could turn them all OFF easily on contest weekends, etc.

The bottom line is that nothing is quieter than incandescent. I wish that that
wasn't the case as the energy savings with LED are significant. Perhaps in 10
years it won't be a concern. But right now I would be cautious and have a
plan B for lighting when operating.

On 11, May2015, at 8:13 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote:

Had an electrician at the operating QTH today to discuss replacing the
recessed ³can² lighting throughout the house. He suggested replacing the
incandescent cans (now 65 watts per bulb) with LED lamps (same lumens with
10-13 watts per bulb). I have looked at the Internet on the question of
RFI from LED bulbs and see wildly inconsistent reports. It is the case
that HF radios like the K3 have LEDs in their panels; but I would be
installing as many as 60 LED fixtures running at 10-13 watts each. My
caution comes from my novice days in the 50s when a single fluorescent
lamp put my hamming out of business - things were quiet when the only
light source was the filament of a 6146 and the dial lamps on the HQ-100.
I know that LEDs aren¹t at all the same; but I don¹t want to relamp the
house if it puts me off the air. And if they (or their power supplies) do
generate RFI in the HF bands, would the K3¹s NR get rid of it? Anyone
have any good data on this?

 Tnx,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 powercycling at higher wattages into KPA500

2015-01-28 Thread Craig Buck via Elecraft
I suspect voltage sag off the 120v line. Lights flickering is a
symptom. The specs call for 1000VA in and that translates to about 8
amps at 120v. The specified fuse is 12 amps so peaks may be higher.
Add everything else in and consider you may have a 15 amp line with a
long way back to the fusebox and it is possible your voltage is
dropping. Measure the AC voltage with the key down by plugging a
voltmeter into the outlet. Also check the HV in the Amp.

From the manual:

The KPA500 operates to full specifications when the HV under full load is
between 60V and 85V as shown on the LCD (Tap HV to display the voltage
under CW “key down” conditions at full power). The maximum voltage is set
using transformer taps as described on pg. 9.
The KPA500 will operate with reduced performance at voltages as low as 40V.
When the voltage is less than 60V the maximum output power may be less than
500W and distortion products will increase.

My KAT500 is getting power-cycled in CW and RTTY modes at various drive levels

all, and receive superb audio reports (no hint of RF in my transmissions). I
am thinking I have either an excessive voltage drop on the AC circuit or
perhaps there is enough RF getting into the shack to trip up the KAT500 power
when using the higher duty cycle modes.
Everything is running on the same 120v house circuit. I experimented with
moving both the amp and the KAT500 to a different circuit in the same room, but
this did not solve the problem. Let me first describe the equipment, and then
I'll list the frequencies and power thresholds that tripped the KAT500 into a
power cycle:
Antenna: Traffie Hex Beam. Very low SWR, typically 1.2 or less, sometimes 1.5
on 10 and 12 meters. The antenna is over a portion of the house, and about 20
feet away from the shack. The coax is grounded at the base of the antenna (two
ground rods, through a lightning arrestor).
KAT500: I have this in BYPASS mode. I don't really need the tuner for the hex
beam, but I plan on using it with a future vertical for 40m. I am powering the
KAT500 with its own AC power adapter. For good measure, I wrapped about 4
turns of the power cord through a ferrite bead at the transformer end of the
cable. This is a 15V 1000mAh power adapter from Radio Shack.
KPA500 is plugged into the same circuit on its own outlet at the wall. HV
reads 78.5 at rest. The unit is sitting on top of the KAT500 with the foldout
legs extended.
K3 is powered with an Astron RS-35M, on the same house circuit.
P3 is powered by the K3 VDC out
On 15 meters CW, the KAT500 begins to experience power cycles driving 20-22
watts. The amp, when it crosses about 450 watts, the KAT500 power cycles. I
ran 30 watts into it for about 620+ out with no problems on SSB, SWR never
exceeded 1.2 on the KAT500's indicator lamps.
On 12 meters CW, the KAT500 begins to experience power cycles driving just 9
watts (about 180w out). SWR on this band is a steady 1.5. I did have some
success by moving the KAT500's power adapter to the other circuit in the room
and was able to push the K3 to 22 watts (480 out) before the powercycling
returned. This lead me to believe I had a voltage drop issue, perhaps from
running the amp on the same 110 circuit. But on 10 meters I still had problems
even using the other circuit to power the KAT500. That makes me think noise is
getting into the KAT500, or perhaps RF from the antenna is putting noise on my
AC house circuits. I was able to run the amp to full power on SSB with no
power cycling of the KAT500.
On 10 meters the KAT500 power cycles with just 6 watts drive (170 out). On
phone I can run full power with no issues. SWR is 1.2 on this band.

I have a Morgan AC line filter arriving tomorrow and I'll see if the problem
persists with it filtering the house circuit feeding the shack equipment.

Do these symptoms smell more like a noise issue (RF in the shack) or a line
voltage deficiency with the house circuit? I'm think probably taxing the line
in the higher duty cycles, and it just manifests at different thresholds on
different frequencies.
When transmitting a long string of CW or RTTY, if the KAT500 gets into repeated
power cycles the KPA500 eventually throws a fault.
Some other observations: If I turn on my desk lamps, at the higher outputs the
lamps will modulate slightly with my voice. I think I'm sucking too much juice
from the circuit, but this is just a guess on my part. Generally the only
other piece of equipment in the house that seems to be affected by RF is our
DirectTV receiver (the notorious touch-panel design). It is generally only
affected on 10 meters, with a high duty cycle mode like RTTY.
Can anyone provide me some more troubleshooting tips?
Thanks!Jeff, W6UX

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Changes at WWV, WWVB

2014-11-28 Thread Craig Smith
I heard from my time-nerd friends that the modulation scheme changes for
a short period at night to allow a chance for older equipment to sync
up. I don't know that for sure.

Technology Review said there are millions of pieces of equipment that
 use the older scheme.

This is indeed interesting stuff. First I've heard of the change.

But I do have several automatically syncing clocks in the house and have
noticed that he syncing isn't as robust and dependable as it was some years
ago. For example, switching from standard to daylight savings time and back
takes some of them a few days to accomplish, with some of them switching back
and forth from day to day before finally getting it right. Don't think that
signal strength is the problem.

As someone else noted, it sure would be good to know which manufacturers use
the new standard!

[Elecraft] PX3 -- Can JT-65 Monitoring be Added

2014-11-21 Thread CRAIG W BEHRENS
I would be surprised if someone has not asked this question, but as an avid QRP
JT65 operator -- would it be possible/practical to add a (somewhat) tailored
JT-65 mode to the PX3's configuration?
Also, getting the JT-65 output levels set optimal is a challenge -- could this
also be made visual via the PX3?
Thanks for all the great work Elecraft does for us -- it certainly shows in the

Re: [Elecraft] Internal Impedance of Li-Ion Battery Packs

2014-08-04 Thread Craig Smith
It seems to me that using the two smaller packs would have some advantages for
your application. They would each be able to power both the KX-3 and the
amplifier, just for about half the time of the single larger battery. So you
would have to switch over to the other battery at some point. But using two
does offer redundancy in the event of a battery failure. Also, dividing the
weight into two chunks may be advantageous for the folks who are humping them
up the mountain.

[Elecraft] Best Way to Make a 1/4-Wave Reference Wire?

2014-07-26 Thread CRAIG W BEHRENS
I'm fooling around with custom portable Vertical array antennas for portable
and DXpedition use.
I was wondering if anyone in our list Brain trust had a favorite way to cut
wires to a (reasonably precise) 1/4-wave length.
(Yes, I can measure and No I don't want to model, I want to field test and
calibrate.)
What I want to do is have an elevated vertical (say base at 8'-10'), and add a
temporary 1/4-wave reference counterpoise wire with a 20-degree downward
slope.
Then, use this set-up to adjust whatever physical items I'm using for the
vertical element to get a 1:1 match, calibrated to the radials length.
I want to end-up with a balanced antenna that is resonant and does not require
a tuner (given that I'll have some minor adjustments to fine-tune the antenna's
match at different locations).
So, theoretically, the vertical could be made of 6-inch diameter aluminum
tubing (not likely in the field), insulated or non-insulated wire of any size,
or whatever.
I'm also curious about and I to be able to see what the differences are in the
lengths of antennas based on what materials of different types and sizes that I
use.
Ideas???
Thanks.

[Elecraft] KX3 Full SDR

2013-12-31 Thread Craig Schroeder
Happy New Year,

I want to move into the hobby aspects of SDR and have narrowed my list to the
KX3 with 100 watt Amp or a Flex 3000. I have been told that though the KX3
will connect to a PC it is not a full SDR radio (my understanding of full
is in regard to signal processing but there may be other factors implied that I
am not aware of being new to the SDR world).

If this perspective is on target, what are the important SDR limitations with
the KX3 that I should consider? If there are no important limitations, I do
like the form factor and knobs on the KX3 over the Flex software-only interface.

Thank you,

Thank you everyone for responding so promptly to my SDR question and with such
great information!

A particular point made in regard to SDR on the KX3 was hardware filter options
vs software filters.

Are there differences here that are important to consider from a user's
perspective? Pros/Cons of either approach?

Perhaps I should add that I'm primarily interested in DX'ing. The portability
of the KX3 is a real bonus, but a secondary consideration. I plan to use the
radio I purchase as my primary rig.

Thank you,

Actually, a full SDR would have modulation and demod running in the

Signal processing capabilties are excellent on the KX3, and the array
of DSP features is both wide and deep.

Originally, the KX3 was intended to be a portable trail radio, which
is mostly the way I've used it. However since its introduction, the
KX3 has found a large following of ops that use it as their main base
station rig (either in addition to or in place of portable ops).

I guess if you consider that all major functions are software-based
(either MCU or DSP) and executing on a robust and bulletproof
RF-hardware platform, the KX3 is an SDR. Depends on how you define an
SDR.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Diversity antenna experiences?

2013-12-08 Thread Craig Smith
Sounds like a fairly good experience overall, Jim.

I'm on an even smaller ( 0.25 acre) HOA restricted lot and had an inverted L
on 160 that I used in conjunction with a K9AY receive antenna. I really liked
the K9AY, as it allowed for directional switching and very good S/N ratios with
a very small footprint. Much better at RX than the inverted L. I also had
it set up for diversity but noted the same thing you did with your BOG Beverage
- the K9AY was so much better I just ended up using it without diversity for RX.

One issue is that for optimal diversity reception the two antennas need to be
spaced a fair distance apart in terms of wavelength. I certainly didn't have
that here (K9AY and inverted L only about 60 feet apart). Even with your one
acre, you might not have enough separation, depending on your layout.

(API level 16). Unfortunately, there is a glitch in earlier versions of
Google's Android operating system that prevent these apps from functioning, so

I hope you find these apps useful, and that they make operating your Elecraft

from anywhere.

Happy Elecrafting.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] - PAR HF OMNI ANGLE

2013-09-26 Thread Craig Smith
Both the PAR omniangle and the doublet are excellent antennas.

The 44 ft doublet on 17 meters has a pattern with several sharp lobes, and its
gain will vary considerably depending upon which direction the signal is coming
from. In some directions it will be significantly better than the Omniangle,
and in some directions significantly worse. I believe that this is likely
what Stan was experiencing with the contact in his video.

The obvious advantage of the Omniangle is size. The big advantage of the
doublet is easy multi-band operation (with the tuner). Its gain vs. desired
direction can be either an advantage or disadvantage.

Re: [Elecraft] RIGblaster Advantage for Serious Digital Modes with KX3?

2013-09-18 Thread CRAIG W BEHRENS
Thanks, everyone for the fine support!
I believe that you have helped a lot of people (besides just me) find paths for
getting the digital modes up and running well.
I'm going to use the information and ideas you have provided to get my
KX3/digital mode system optimized and ready for the St. Lucia trip in December.
Thanks again -- ya'll are awesome!

For a different approach, this maybe something to consider...
http://www.4sqrp.com/4s-link.php
There was a note in the reflector about a modification need for the KX3. Quoted
and copied below.
Either a special cable or reworking pcb traces would be necessary.
Good luck,
Rich K8MEG

Just
discovered why I couldn't get the 4SLink to work with the KX3. The
Mic/PTT jack on the 4SLink is backwards from the way the KX3 works. On
the 4SLink, the microphone audio is on the ring and it needs to be on
the tip of the connector going to the KX3.

I
was trying to use a standard audio extension cable between the 4SLink
and the KX3 which put PTT on the Microphone Audio in and the audio on
the PTT (ring) of the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] [QRP-L] RIGblaster Advantage for Serious Digital Modes with KX3?

2013-09-17 Thread CRAIG W BEHRENS
Thanks for the feedback and advice, Don.
I have the Elecraft cables and figured that it would be worth buying an
external interface unit that has a built-in sound card capability that I know
will work, vs. take a chance with the MS Surface Pro computer. (The unit is
reasonably compact and light.)
The optical isolation circuits in the interface unit may be even more important
at the St. Lucia sites, especially considering the various power sources that
will be used. (I too am a believer re. having isolation circuits.)
Also, the Surface only has 1 USB3 port on it and it would be good to not have
to use an external port expander unit to accommodate more cables, etc.
So far--it sounds as if I can get there OK with this path.
Thanks again.

 Craig,

The easy way is to obtain the KX3-PCKT cable set from Elecraft. That
will allow connection between the KX3 and a soundcard. For computer
control and frequency readout from the digital application, you can use
the KX3USB cable that was supplied with your KX3.
Yes, the Elecraft cable set has a cable for the RX I/Q and the ACC2
cable that are excess for your purposes, but the audio cables have right
angle plugs on the K3 end which keeps the cables out of the way. You
could just use a couple of regular audio cables with 3.5mm stereo plugs
 instead.

If you find excessive noise on the audio between the soundcard and KX3,
you might have to add isolation transformers - that would be your
interface unit. You can obtain suitable transformers from Radio Shack
and many other places. I have used the transformers salvaged from old
computer modem cards with success (see my website www.w3fpr.com).

I don't know the provisions you have on that computer for soundcard and
USB, but you will need line level input and output on the left channel
(tip) as a minimum. The right channel is not used for digital modes.

Craig,

Since you have decided to include the external interface, AND you
only have one USB port, look at the serial port on your chosen
interface - you may need the KX3SER cable instead of the KX3USB
cable. The interfaces I know about all have serial ports to connect
to the rig and not USB ports.

 Joel,

Congratulations on the new W4A-Alabama SOTA Association!

I just checked and the SOTA database does indeed have the Alabama summits
already included with a 1 SEPT 2013 start date.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. WØM-Missouri just started
in February 2013 so I'm a bit new myself, but it was a very enjoyable process
in working with the SOTA Management Team in the UK. Dennis, WA2USA, is a
very experienced SOTA enthusiast. I worked him a couple of times this
week-end from two different Missouri summits as I participated in the North
 America SOTA Week-End.

We have a lot of friends in the Huntsville area, so I'll be sure to pack my
KX3 for a Monte Sano activation on our next trip South.

There is not yet an Association Reference Manual (ARM) posted, but I

  be posted soon.

I'm new to all this SOTA business so I hope there are not a lot of

Re: [Elecraft] 43' Vertical

2013-09-04 Thread Bert Craig
Eric, please don't shut this thread down. I have gleaned so much useful
information and personal opinions re. this K3/43 ft. vertical antenna
combination. I'm pretty confident that there are others who feel similarly.

I'm not really sure how noise ratio or SNR truly pertains to a reflector
where we can exchange or learn from others' experiences and/or opinions. Please
let the less e-mail client savvy folks utilize their delete buttons on this
one.

I've often enjoyed reading a particular thread/topic only to be silently
disappointed when such an interesting topic (Vy much on topic, I might add.) is
quelled at the height of its popularity. It's just so easy to create an
Elecraft folder, create an Elecraft rule to move all e-mails with [Elecraft] in
the subject line to the aforementioned folder, and, finally, delete what
doesn't tickle one's fancy.

[Elecraft] TDiH Monte Sano QRP Events

2013-08-06 Thread CRAIG W BEHRENS

Monte Sano BBQ and Buildathon Event:

Per Two Days in Huntsville (TDiH) tradition, another mountaintop QRP
gathering, complete with Southern BBQ and special QRP events, will occur in
Monte Sano State Park Saturday evening, 8/17/13.

This year, we will do a Buildathon as our special
QRP event! Designer Rex Harper—W1REX of QRPme fame is flying down from
Maine to facilitate the building of 35th Anniversary Tuna Tin Transmitters and
special QRPme Dummy Load boards.

Additional details and sign-up sheets will be
located at the QRP ARCI Booth and at the QRP forum room.

Attendance will be limited this year, since we are
limited as to how many people can be at our Rustic Cabin. We intend to build
and test 15 kit sets, so attendee selection criteria will focus on builders
first. A modest number of non-kit building attendees will be able to attend as
long as we do not exceed a total of 30 attendees.
