Let us not be too hasty to judge this beast. According to the
Elecraft price sheet, a comparable K3 setup will cost almost $6800 and
that does not give you a power supply or 200W, which is included with
the Kenwood.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 vs. K3 and other rigs?

2011-06-06 Thread Dave KQ3T
Here are a couple of additional factors to consider.

1. Increasing the output power to 20 or 30 watts would have an impact on
either the weight of the KX3 (more batteries needed to maintain a
desired battery life) or the battery life (the existing batteries would
not last as long at the higher power level).

2. It is much easier to add an external power amplifier, if desired,
than to significantly improve receiver performance at a later date.

 Hi Kristinn

What i dont get is why people expect so much performance from a
so called portable rig. A rig designed for portable operation generally uses
poor antennas and is optimized for weight, size and battery life.

While its nice having great receiver specifications, you do have to be
realistic about the real world requirements that is placed on the receiver
 when operating portable.

For me battery life, convenience and power output are very important
requirements rather than world beating receiver specifications.
I would gladly have 30 watts output over ultimate receiver performance. Most
military manpacks run 20 to 30 watts for good reasons.

10 watts and a wire in the tree type of operation does not demand a receiver
with 100db of IMD dynamic range.

If the KX3 does deliver incredible receiver performance for a bargain price I
wont say NO, however I can live with lesser receiver performance when
 operating with marginal antennas.

What I would prefer to see is an antenna tuner that will tune a 9 to 13 ft
whip on all bands, or alternatively a end fed wire on all bands. A low noise
figure receiver is important when using short portable antennas.

We all waiting for the KX3 tech specs with baited breath. Time will tell
whether we will get a 10,000 dollar contest radio that fits into the palm of
your hand! After all my years of operating, I have yet to have my DC receiver
overload on 40 meters when operating portable with full size low dipoles.

I think, at least in part, the regulation is intended to make amateur

Rather than being able to go from 5W to 1000+W with a single, relatively

drive the KW amp.. And except for Elecraft, I'm not aware of any other

Re: [Elecraft] K1 question...

2009-10-14 Thread Dave KQ3T
Hi Tom,

Both varieties will produce the DC voltages you need (as would a few
batteries). For your purposes, the differences between the two types may
not matter.

Linear power supplies use a conventional transformer to convert line
voltage (117vac) to a lower voltage (typically 15-18vac), which is then
rectified by diodes, filtered by capacitors and (usually) controlled by
a voltage regulator to 13-14 volts DC. Unfortunately, as the current
goes up, the size of the transformer (which usually contains an iron
core) goes up as well; a 20 amp 12V linear power supply might weigh 15
lbs or more.

Switching power supplies generate a high frequency AC voltage, which
does away with the need for the heavy transformer. So switching supplies
tend to be lighter than linear supplies for the given amount of current
produced. The disadvantage is that the high frequency AC can, in poor
designed/shielded supplies, generate hash that can be heard in your
receiver.

QST has tested a number of switching power supplies recently, you might
check to see if the supplies you're considering have been evaluated.

 Hi y'all!

I have noted that most of the posts in the elecraft reflector are about the

I bought a K1 awhile back because it was billed as a great first-time
builder's kit. As one of those first-time builders, I suppose I'd agree,
but I've run into a few rather basic questions and I'm undoubtedly driving
Gary up the wall with them. I'm a rank beginner on all things electronic I'm
afraid. He's set me the task of building an RF probe (which I'm getting to)
and told me to get a signal generator as well.

I need to do the signal tracing the manual suggests (Appendix E, p5) and
wanted to build the signal generator shown in schematic on that page. I have
the KFL1-4 board with 17, 20, 30 and 40 meters and am only hearing signals
on the 40 meter band. I thought I'd build the signal generator with a switch
 to change between crystals.

 I'm looking for some advice:

I have one power supply (a Samlex SEC-1235M) and I guess I'll need another
power source for the signal generator. As I looked at the Samlex site
(http://www.universal-radio.com/CATALOG/hamps.html), I saw both linear and
switching power supplies. Does it matter which kind I get? Any other
 suggestions for inexpensive options?

I suppose I'll stop with one question for now.

 Thanks hams!

Since June 1 of this year, these are the counts in each folder:

K2: 400
K3: 3461

Of course, some/most of the Other really belong in one of the Kn

I'd attribute this mix to two things: The K3 is the newest (how many of

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Tuner versus Antenna Analizer ?

2008-09-10 Thread Dave KQ3T

Hi Paul,

Just to expand slightly on this one aspect of your question.

The term balun is a contraction of balanced-unbalanced. It's a
device for connecting a balanced feedline to an unbalanced one.

Most transceivers these days are designed to connect to a 50 ohm coaxial
cable (such as RG-8, RG-58, etc.). Coaxial cable is an unbalanced
feedline, since one side (the shield) is connected to ground.
Unfortunately, coaxial cable will usually have a higher loss than a
balanced feedline (ladder line). The purpose of a balun is to
efficiently couple the balanced feedline to the unbalanced coax that
connects to your rig.

Many hams do not use baluns. They will run coax from the rig all the way
to the feedpoint of the antenna. This is especially true when the
antenna is resonant (that is, a full half-wave on the band you're
operating). Many commercial antennas are designed for connection
directly to 50 ohm coax, without an intervening balun.

[Elecraft] K1: Advice on Options

2008-08-05 Thread Dave KQ3T

Hello, all,

I'm about to order a K1, and thought I'd ask your opinions about various
options and configuration choices.

1. I understand the tuning range can be set to either 75kHz or 150kHz.
My inclination is to go with the 75kHz range, for the slower tuning rate.

2. Somewhat related to 1), will I be better off with a range of
7000-7075kHz or 7025-7100kHz, or possibly some other coverage.

3. What are your thoughts on the following options? In particular, are
they effective, and are any of them much easier to install during
initial assembly (as opposed to being retrofit)?

  A. KAT1 Antenna Tuner
  B. KNB1 Noise Blanker
  C. KBT1 Battery Holder

Some kinds work great--others not so great. The kind that looks kind

more. The best stuff (and the cheapest I think), has a sort of wavy
pattern to it, and actually feels a bit thinner. But it sure grabs
better! I use it for paddles, and also for setting things on the
console in my vehicle. It also works pretty well if you need to set
something on the dashboard.

That sounds like a ring, or circular queue, in CS terms. I'm another who
has never quite understand what a band-stacking memory is, or does.

What they want is a stack, for each band as well as a button for each

popping it is non-destructive and underflowing wraps round. (I'd need
to use one of the rigs that actually implements this to get the fine
details, so people requesting need to specify in more detail).

I'm starting to think that if, historically, all rigs had come with
Band+ and Band- buttons, plus dedicated GoToBandXY buttons, we'd be
seeing posts asking for a knob connected by a shaft to a multi-gang
rotary switch, hooked to a big air-wound coil with multiple taps.

I'm confident the Elecraft guys are prioritizing their efforts, and
putting Fifty ways to change bands at the nether end of the list.

Ok, lets see if I get it - users want to randomly assign bands to a set of
buttons in an order of their choosing, that makes sense to the operation
they are performing, then memorize the meaning of the buttons, and call up a
particular (and memorized) band with a single button.

And this would be more convenient than cycling through the band select
buttons, presumably because you are forced to cycle through bands you may
not need to at this point in your operation.

Am I getting this right? I apologize for the bandwidth - I'm just trying to
get educated.

Re: [Elecraft] The K3 in comprison to the Big Guns

2008-05-16 Thread Dave KQ3T

Or, to make an analogy more along the lines of manufactured products...

What has better performance? A 10-ton Mack truck or a 1500-lb F1 Ferrari?

That said, there are ergonomic considerations that may be compromised in
the smaller design (as they are in the Ferrari).

That's it, I'm going to ask the silly question.

How can the K3's receiver outperform that of the Icom IC-7800 and Yaesu
FTDX9000? These two radios cost in excess of $11,000 and weigh in at over
25Kg (55lbs)! The K3 costs about $2000 and weighs about 4Kg (8.5lbs). Yes
the K3 is deficient of a screen, internal PSU and some knobs but why on
earth is there such a difference in price and weight? Given this, how can
the K3's receiver outperform these other radios?

These questions keep bugging me. Those glossy Yaesu and Icom brochures
certainly don't help!

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware Fatigue - was K2 v K3

2008-05-07 Thread Dave KQ3T
As a prospective purchaser, I've been following the list with interest,
especially the discussion of various issues related to the firmware.

1. Maybe there needs to be a step between the beta testers and a general
release. That is, a Release Candidate version (or versions, rc1, rc2,
etc). For the adventuresome, bleeding edge, or just those who want to
help the process, without being a formal beta tester.

2. Maybe the development path could fork into bug-fix and new features
branches. I could be wrong here, since I'm just going by the comments,
but it seems that new firmware introduces both fixes for known problems
and extensions of capabilities. Having a stable branch (bug-fixes only)
and an unstable branch (new features) would allow those who are happy
with current features to get improved firmware without running the risks
associated with new, less-well-tested, features.
