Re: [Elecraft] KX3 vs. K3 and other rigs?
Here are a couple of additional factors to consider. 1. Increasing the output power to 20 or 30 watts would have an impact on either the weight of the KX3 (more batteries needed to maintain a desired battery life) or the battery life (the existing batteries would not last as long at the higher power level). 2. It is much easier to add an external power amplifier, if desired, than to significantly improve receiver performance at a later date. 73, Dave, KQ3T On 6/6/2011 12:25 AM, juergen wrote: Hi Kristinn What i dont get is why people expect so much performance from a so called portable rig. A rig designed for portable operation generally uses poor antennas and is optimized for weight, size and battery life. While its nice having great receiver specifications, you do have to be realistic about the real world requirements that is placed on the receiver when operating portable. For me battery life, convenience and power output are very important requirements rather than world beating receiver specifications. I would gladly have 30 watts output over ultimate receiver performance. Most military manpacks run 20 to 30 watts for good reasons. 10 watts and a wire in the tree type of operation does not demand a receiver with 100db of IMD dynamic range. If the KX3 does deliver incredible receiver performance for a bargain price I wont say NO, however I can live with lesser receiver performance when operating with marginal antennas. What I would prefer to see is an antenna tuner that will tune a 9 to 13 ft whip on all bands, or alternatively a end fed wire on all bands. A low noise figure receiver is important when using short portable antennas. We all waiting for the KX3 tech specs with baited breath. Time will tell whether we will get a 10,000 dollar contest radio that fits into the palm of your hand! Re: [Elecraft] K1 question...
Hi Tom, Both varieties will produce the DC voltages you need (as would a few batteries). For your purposes, the differences between the two types may not matter. Linear power supplies use a conventional transformer to convert line voltage (117vac) to a lower voltage (typically 15-18vac), which is then rectified by diodes, filtered by capacitors and (usually) controlled by a voltage regulator to 13-14 volts DC. Unfortunately, as the current goes up, the size of the transformer (which usually contains an iron core) goes up as well; a 20 amp 12V linear power supply might weigh 15 lbs or more. Switching power supplies generate a high frequency AC voltage, which does away with the need for the heavy transformer. So switching supplies tend to be lighter than linear supplies for the given amount of current produced. The disadvantage is that the high frequency AC can, in poor designed/shielded supplies, generate hash that can be heard in your receiver. QST has tested a number of switching power supplies recently, you might check to see if the supplies you're considering have been evaluated. 73, Dave KQ3T Thomas R. Hauff wrote: Hi y'all! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Tuner versus Antenna Analizer ?
Hi Paul, Just to expand slightly on this one aspect of your question. The term balun is a contraction of balanced-unbalanced. It's a device for connecting a balanced feedline to an unbalanced one. Most transceivers these days are designed to connect to a 50 ohm coaxial cable (such as RG-8, RG-58, etc.). Coaxial cable is an unbalanced feedline, since one side (the shield) is connected to ground. Unfortunately, coaxial cable will usually have a higher loss than a balanced feedline (ladder line). The purpose of a balun is to efficiently couple the balanced feedline to the unbalanced coax that connects to your rig. Many hams do not use baluns. They will run coax from the rig all the way to the feedpoint of the antenna. This is especially true when the antenna is resonant (that is, a full half-wave on the band you're operating). Many commercial antennas are designed for connection directly to 50 ohm coax, without an intervening balun. 73, Dave KQ3T Paul Maruna wrote: ...Where does the baluns come into this play with either unit ? ... Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Windows XP SP3 :(
Well, Phil, at least you're halfway there... both Thunderbird and Firefox come in native Linux versions. 73, Dave KQ3T Phil Kane wrote: If and when the four major programs that I depend on daily (WordPerfect, Thunderbird, Firefox and Folio Bound VIEWS - my communications law legal research database engine - come out with 100% Linux native versions (WINE won't handle the database program and I didn't try it on the others) I will consider going back to Linux (I ran Red Hat for a while). ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware Fatigue - was K2 v K3
As a prospective purchaser, I've been following the list with interest, especially the discussion of various issues related to the firmware. 1. Maybe there needs to be a step between the beta testers and a general release. That is, a Release Candidate version (or versions, rc1, rc2, etc). For the adventuresome, bleeding edge, or just those who want to help the process, without being a formal beta tester. 2. Maybe the development path could fork into bug-fix and new features branches. I could be wrong here, since I'm just going by the comments, but it seems that new firmware introduces both fixes for known problems and extensions of capabilities. Having a stable branch (bug-fixes only) and an unstable branch (new features) would allow those who are happy with current features to get improved firmware without running the risks associated with new, less-well-tested, features. 73, Dave KQ3T ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band switch
I believe that would be called a circular queue. 73, Dave KQ3T Don Wilhelm wrote: ... A stack can only be loaded/unloaded from one end (usually referred to as the top) and one must sequentially remove entries until the one wanted is present. The K3 regular band switch is more akin to a stack, but not quite since it wraps around and one can move in either direction. ... 73, Don W3FPR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
