[Elecraft] Adjust ALC in Data A mode, with KX3

2016-12-10 Thread David Douglass
Hi,

I've just re-acquired a KX3, and have been trying it on JT65.

As per recommendations I have been trying to use Data A mode, but trying to
adjust the drive level is a nightmare, and getting the required 4-5 bars of ALC
has been near impossible. If I switch to USB mode, I can set the drive levels
without issue using the mic gain, and adjusting the sound are levels.

I would have assumed that setting drive levels would be the same in USB mode as
it was in Data A mode. Is this not the case or do I having something else going
on.

Apologies as I appreciate the subject of JT65 has been covered extensively in
the past, but I can't figure out why I seem to be able to set things up in USB
mode easily, but can't in Data A.

Cheers

David, vk2nu

[Elecraft] K2 and SDR-IQ

2010-08-24 Thread David Douglass
Hi,

I wonder if anyone out there is using a SDR-IQ as a panadaptor for a K2?

Just acquired a SDR-IQ and looking for suggestions on how I can set this up?

I have the Z10 buffer IF mod in the K2, and can tune the software
(SpectraVue and SDR Console) to the K2 IF frequency of 4915kHz and get a
Spectrum display, but haven't been able to interface the K2 into the mix.

Also wonder if anyone is using CW-Skimmer with this et-up and how they have
interfaced it??

Thanks for looking

[Elecraft] K2/100 issue

2010-07-06 Thread David Douglass
My K2/100 seems to have developed an issue.

On key down I seem to be getting maximum power output, irrespective of where
the power control is set. I am getting no power output indication at all on the
inbuilt power meter in the K2!

When I press tune, the K2 tells me I have 9.9:1 SWR and only a few watts of
output, but my external meter tells me I have full output (well over 100w, and
a 1:1 SWR). This happens irrespective of whether I use a dummy load or antenna.
The K2 seems to work normally with the KPA100 disconnected, and RX is fine.

I'm guessing I have a issue with the SWR/power output sensing in the KPA100,
but would apreciate some help on what components to check.

The K2/100 has been working fine to this point.

Cheers

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 - Antenna Help

2010-06-11 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

A bit of a strange one here..

Short story, I have just built and installed a KPA100 internal amp for my K2.
All is going well with the set-up and I have been using fine with a multiband
vertical I have at home.

Problem is I put up an end-fed 1/2 wave vertical to use in a local contest this
weekend and I am seeing a strange phenomenon!! Below is a series of observed
events.

1. Erected antenna, checked SWR with analyzer (SWR 1.2:1)
2. Connected to K2/100 via about 10m of RG-213 and checked SWR using 10w = SWR
still 1.2:1, so far so good.
3. Turned up power (50w), checked SWR, getting Hi Refl reading on K2, and
external meter, blown fuse in K2/100 lead.
4. Replaced fuse, check again at 10w OK, turn power up to 11w and engage
KPA100, get Hi Refl..
5. Check K2/100 using dummy load and my other multiband vertical, all OK at 10w
and 100w.
6. Use K2 at 10w to drive my external amp, to 400w to check the 1/2wave antenna
and all OK, SWR 1.2:1
7. With the KPA100 engaged the power seems to way overshoot on the K2, hence
the blown fuse. However, this doesn't happen into a dummy load or other antenna.

Looks like my K2 with KPA100 doesn't like the 1/2 wave end-fed antenna at all,
but for the life of me not sure why.

I first though I must have burnt out the 1/2wave matching circuit somehow on
the antenna, but obviously this is OK as it will handle 400w. The end fed 40m
halfwave is home-made, and is basically a airwound coil with a couple of
doorknob capacitors in series to match the high impedance at the end of the
1/2w wire to 50 ohms. In short it is a beefed up Par-End Fedz antenna. Speaking
of which, I have a couple Par-End Fedz antennas, which I plan to check to see
if I get the same problems.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 - Antenna Help

2010-06-11 Thread David Douglass
OK, to add to my last,

I've just tried with a different antenna on 40m. Again, once I engage the
KPA100, I get high SWR, power overshoot and a blown fuse. So it doesn't seem to
be antenna related but seems to be band related. 30m-10m is Ok. I don't have an
antenna for 80/160 so can't check.

All bands are fine with a dummy load...

[Elecraft] [K2] Parts for sale

2010-05-21 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I have the following K2 bits for sale. I bought these as part of a built K2,
but am upgrading to 100w and won't be needing these.

Top Cover, with built in KAT2 (Internal ATU), KIO2 (RS-232 Serial Interface)
and KBT2-X (Internal battery Kit, not including battery). All items checked and
working FB

From my calculations this is nearly $320 US worth of accessories, plus a spare
top cover and speaker. I would like to sell these for $200US plus $20post
airmail to anywhere in the world. Cost will only be $10 post to a buyer in VK,
although I suppose chances of this are slim!

Note, I am only selling the above parts and not any additional bits that solder
onto the K2 itself!

The K2 also has a built in K60XV Transverter board, which I have no need for
and get annoyed at having to scroll through the 60m band when I change bands. I
have not checked this (although the 60m band as mentioned is enabled).

I will sell this for $40US plus $5 shipping worldwide. Obviously if you buy
items, you will save on postage.

Note I am only selling the board itself, you will need to find your own
connectors etc.

All payments via PayPal, unless you are in VK, and we can talk!! PLEASE E-MAIL
OFF LIST.

Cheers

[Elecraft] K2 Pwr Out Problems

2010-03-31 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

My K2 seems to have developed a power output problem.

Set-up is a QRP K2, with SSB, internal ATU and KIO2 options.

I get full power output on CW OK, but only get a Max of about 1w RF output on
SSB.

If I remove the top lid, and therefore disconnect the internal ATU and KIO2, I
then get full output on SSB and CW.

I've also tried just plugging in the ATU and leaving the KIO2 out of line, and
this seems to give full output??

Could there be a problem on the KIO2 that is causing me to loose SSB output??
Leaving the KIO2 inline but turning it on and off in the menu does not effect
things.

Any ideas..

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 - Strange Tune Behaviour

2009-02-14 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I've been having issues since last night with an inability to use the Tune
Function on the K3.

I use Tune to get a carrier to tune my amp (an Emtron DX-1). Usually this works
fine, but now the Tune simply turns itself straight off after it is pressed
when I have the amp turned on. The Tune funtion still seems to work OK on lower
power without the amp.

I'm assuming this may be related to my antennas being saturated at the moment
(we've had steady rain for a full week), although according to the SWR reading
on the radio and my external tuner all is still OK. Does the K3 have some sort
of sensing that will turn off Tune if it suspects a problem?

I am able to tune the amp manually with a straight key, but this is a pain as I
have to plug and unplug cables everytime.

Thanks

[Elecraft] Re: Buddipole vs. tuner and wire

2008-05-13 Thread David Douglass
If you are more interested in DX, go for the Buddistick? I replaced the whip on
mine with a 12foot MFJ telescopic whip and added an extra pole under the coil,
this meant I could bypass the coil on all bands 20m and up. It worked well with
a good counterpoise/radial system.

All the Buddipole stuff is very good quality, but not cheap, and as mentioned
you can get a 10m telescopic fiberglass pole for a fraction of the price, and
make something around this which would out perform a buddipole.

[Elecraft] [K3] Disable 5mHz

access to this in Australia, and I don't have any real interest in listening
in!!

[Elecraft] [K3] DVK and mic routing

2008-03-21 Thread David Douglass

Hi All,

Looks like I'll be using my K3 in the upcoming CQWW WPX SSB contest, and
have a question regarding routing the mic for DVK.

Is it possible to enable the front panel, and rear panel inputs
simultaneously? I'd like to connect the rear panel input directly to the
soundcard output on the PC, whilst still using my headset on the front panel
input?? From what I can read in the manual I can only enable one input at
time in the menu?

I know I could plug my heil into the soundcard and work around that way, but
using both inputs would save me having to make a jumper cable, as my heil
headset is hard-wired into an 8 pin connector!

Thanks

Hi Just a quick question..

I’ve somehow managed to set up my K3, so that when I tune the main tuning

Not sure how I’ve done this, but would like to stop it?? I’ve looked in the

[Elecraft] K3 new Build Problem??

2008-03-07 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I’ve just finished building my K3/100..

All went well but I seem to have a bit of an issue.

In RX the radio works fine for a while, but then it goes deaf for a short
period of time. There is then a loud popping sound from the speaker, and all
returns to normal. This just seems to repeat, with the radio working fine
for a couple of minutes and then going deaf??

Any ideas?? I thought I would try the list first before getting in touch
with support in case it is something basic??

[Elecraft] KUSB - Vista Issues

2008-03-07 Thread David Douglass

Hi All,

Just installed a KUSB to run my K3, but it doesn't seem to want to install
correctly under Vista.

I've tried just plugging in the cable and letting Vista install the drivers
automatically. I've also tried downloading the drivers from prolific and
loading them manually, and finally I've also tried installing the drivers
from the supplied disk.

In each case I can see the device in Device Manager, listed as 'Prolific
USB-to-Serial Comm Port (Port 5)', but it shows the little yellow '!', and
it says that the 'Device Cannot Start. (Code 10).

The Driver version is listed under 3.0.0.0 under the Driver Tab, which I
believe should be 2.0.2.8 ??

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong ??

Cheers

[Elecraft] [K3] - serial # 544 arrival

2008-03-06 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

For those tracking shipping dates, kit # 544 arrived in Australia today. Was
ordered 16th/June/07.

Arrived a little late due to some ‘confusion’ over the confirmation of the
order, but it’s finally here and hopefully the memory of the long wait will
diminish!!

Just have to try and put it all together in 24 hours for the Commonwealth

[Elecraft] Shipping Status Page

2007-12-06 Thread David Douglass
Firstly sorry for the post and I'm not wanting to start another lengthy
debate on shipping.

However, I've just checked the shipping page and note that it still contains
the following info... 'K3 orders received after Oct 17th are targeted for
shipment in mid-late January. New K3 orders received after Nov 26th are
targeted for mid Feb. delivery.'

I hope I'm off the mark here, but this seems very (very) optimistic
considering orders from early May are still shipping, and that will leave
orders from May through to mid October still to ship (including Dayton
orders and early orders taken without deposit) before mid January !!

I wonder whether it would be possible, now that you have a handle on
shipping capabilities, to update the shipping page with revised (more
realistic) targets when you do your next weekly update?

Thanks

You make a good point Nick.. One bonus of all the delays is the favourable
exchange rate!! I actually contacted Lisa last week to make my remaining 50%

moment. I’ve probably saved myself a couple of hundred AUS$ or so, on the
rate of 6 months back, so it seemed like a good time to lock it in as I'm
sure this won't last.

One less cable between the radio and PC is always good news,
now if you could only assign FSK keying to the serial cable I
could forget all about the 15 pin plug on the back of the K3..

This is on the K3 firmware task list. Just a small matter of firmware, but
there are other higher priority features Wayne is working on.

[Elecraft] K3 shipping

2007-10-10 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Sorry to add to all the mail, but I see there appears to have been changes
to latter production runs of the K3’s, as per the shipping schedule page.

New K3 (3rd Pr. run) orders received after Oct 1st are scheduled for
shipment in early January.

I assume by this that runs 1 and 2 have been made bigger, as from memory, I
was in Run 3 when I ordered back in mid-June.

Apologies if I've missed something here, but can't remember reading anything
about this ??

Cheers

David, Vk2NU

[Elecraft] K3 ship dates - ? for Elecraft

2007-08-30 Thread David Douglass
Snip…Please speculate as to the shipping status for Production Run #2.

I suppose ditto Run 3.. I may have to start think about buying an ‘interim
radio’ for CQWW CW as it's looking like I'll be cutting it close in having
my K3 in time!!

Re: [Elecraft] Question about K2 power meter

2007-04-24 Thread David Douglass
Just in case anyone else is suffering from unstable power out in tune mode,
I followed Don’s advice (as below) and changed R98 on the RF (270ohm) board
for a 1.5K resistor (I actually had a measured value of 1.64K on the POT but
1.5k was the closest fixed resistor I had).

Now when I enter tune, power output is much more stable, although it still
creeps up slightly with time. This makes tuning my DX-1 a lot easier and I'm
not tripping the amp out! Power out on 10m is down a little on the basic K2
(about 12w max), but I'm still getting 100w with the K2/100..

David, VK2NU

If the variation is quite bothersome, your K2/100 may be a candidate for
increasing the value of R98 (on the bottom of the RF Board) to slow down
The power variation. If you increase it too much, the power output on
the higher bands may decrease (check that with the basic K2, not with
the KPA100 powered). In most cases, about 1k is the upper limit for the
value, but if your K2 has greater gain than the average, you may find
success with even higher values. It is easiest to substitute a 2k pot
for R98 when testing for the best value, then measure the pot resistance
and put in the nearest fixed value resistor.

This procedure is listed on the Elecraft website - in Builder's
Resources IIRC.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] K2/100 speaker audio

2007-04-17 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Have just noticed that I'm hearing nothing through my K2/100 speaker.

Headphones work OK and fixed audio out is fine, but nothing on the speaker
or at the external speaker jack.

Would I be right in thinking that the headphone socket on the front panel
could be on the blink ??

RE: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2007-03-14 Thread David Douglass
Tom,

Any thoughts about the 259B?

Check out the following site and look at the projects link. The SCARC sell a
Antenna Analyser kit ($140AUS including international postage, which will be
not much over $100US)

http://www.scarc.org.au/

I have built one of these and it works FB. It is not of the same quality as
an Elecraft kit, but the price is good and you get the added bonus of making
it yourself.

David, VK2NU

PS...maybe this should be something Elecraft should look at adding to there
product list in the future, I'm sure this would be a goer !!

[Elecraft] Question for UK members (PSU and Amp)

2007-03-14 Thread David Douglass
I have a couple of queries that some UK members may be able to help me with
!!

I have seen on the web a 20amp Watson Power-mite switch-mode PSU available
in the UK. This looks a great size for use with my K2 on my travels, I just
wonder if anyone has used one with the K2 and if they have any comments
(i.e. any noise of RF problems)??

Also I’m seriously thinking of getting a Linear Amp UK Ranger 811K amp kit.
Again has anyone built one of these, and if so, any comments. I like the
idea of building the amp from a kit, and the Elecraft amps are out of my
price league.

Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 - 20m receive

2007-03-11 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I’ve have a suspect issue with low RX on 20m.

The level of background noise on 20m is substantially lower than other
bands, and in general the RX level on 20 seems down to other bands.

I’ve suspected this of being the case for a while but just noticed more over
this weekend in the BERU contest.

I can still receive stations, and local VK and ZL still give strong signals
(s9 plus), but I have a feeling something is amiss. The receive level on 20
is comparable with other bands with the pre-amp turned off (and before you
ask, I have the pre-amp on).

I have full power out (on K2 and K2/100) on 20 and therefore think that I
have the alignment pretty much OK.

Is there any parts in the 20m RX path that I should suspect that are
specific to receive on this band, and not shared with TX or neighboring
bands?

I plan to do a full RX and TX alignment, once I have a good nights sleep,
but thought I would check here first !!

Thanks

[Elecraft] Portable K2 battery question

2007-02-20 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I’ve just picked up 5 x 12v new sealed lead acid batteries (7Ah) at the
local Hamfest with a view to using them as a portable supply for my K2 (in
the upcoming John Moyle Field Day ).

I’ve wired these in parallel, but was just curious whether anyone has any
recommendations regarding use, charging etc etc, as I’m new to any sort of
battery/portable operation. I also picked up a small 2.5amp charger at the
same Hamfest!

What sort of life should I expect with the basic K2 under contest condx with
this type of battery pack (at full output ~15w, as our local FD has no QRP
category)?? Would I be able to power the k2/100 from this, and again, what
sort of life would I be looking at ??

Any tips or links to relevant web-sites appreciated !!

[Elecraft] Low pwr output 30m K2/100

2006-10-15 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I've recently completed my KPA100, and have noted that I have low pwr output
on 30m (into a dummy load)

I am getting about 75w out on this band with Hi-Cur message

I've checked the low pass filters on this band using an Antenna analyzer
connected to the SO-239 jack of the KPA100 (as per troubleshooting), and
this seem fine, and have re-done the transmitter alignment of the base K2
for 30/20m.

Any ideas were I should start looking!!

[Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

2006-07-17 Thread David Douglass
Hi,

Just a quick question..

I've just installed the parts in my basic K2 to externally key an amp. I've
just tried to key my old FL-2100B with this, but have found that as soon as
I plug the cable in, the amp keys when the radio is still in RX ??

Is there a menu setting I need to change or have I made a mistake on the
circuit ?? The cable is fine as I use this on my FT1000mp to key the same
amp.

I've checked the resistance on the keying circuit and I get about 18ohms,
when the radio is keyed, as opposed to open circuit when in the RX state ??

Thanks

RE: [Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

2006-07-17 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses to this - much appreciated.

I'm afraid it was a simple case of me not reading the instructions on the
keying circuit.

The FL-2100B pulls 20v on its keying input, whilst the circuit for the K2 is
only designed for 5-12v !! This is clearly written on the instructions with
the circuit, which I neglected to read.

Does anyone have details of a simple circuit I can build, so I can use this
with my FL-2100B ??

Again, many thanks for the all the replies !!

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

David,

No question is quick if you need to understand what is going on G!

The amp keying circuit should work unless the output transistor is being
forced into conduction from whatever voltage is being applied on its open
collector - it should not be if the voltages applied are within a normal
range.

Without the amp connected, you can check the base voltage of the 2N
transistor - it should be very close 0 volts during receive and about 0.7
volts (the emitter/base junction voltage for the 2N) during transmit.
If those two conditions are not true, then you have something wrong with the
keying circuit wiring.

During receive, the 2N should be cutoff due to the low voltage at its
base and should not conduct even with voltage applied to the collector. Be
certain the resistance in the emitter path is quite low - a bit of
resistance there could cause the output transistor to misbehave.

If your problem still is not solved, try measuring the circuit output
transistor voltages (to K2 ground) with the amp connected and the K2 in
receive. The emitter should be zero volts, and the base should also be very
low, while the collector should measure at the voltage applied externally
from the amp. Be certain you have a good low resistance connection from the
amp ground (terminal E) to the K2 ground and a good connection from the amps
RY terminal to the keying circuit's output collector.

If you find the conditions above are OK, you likely have a bad 2N.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] RE:Slightly off top amp question (David Douglass)

2006-06-28 Thread David Douglass

Firstly thanks to all who replied to my original post, if I didn't reply
personally..

On closer inspection I have so far found 2 ceramic door knob capacitors that
were falling apart !! These were not in the input coil alignment section,
but near the valves and band-switch in the amp.

For you RF guru's out there... I have a couple of questions..

1. Is it possible to solder these capacitors back together ? They are the
flatter type doorknob caps and basically what has happened with both of them
is that the one of the screw housings has fallen off the side of each cap
(hope this makes sense).

2. Secondly, if this is not advisable, can I just replace these with the
standard type (barrel shaped) door knob caps, as long as the KV rating is
greater or equal to that of the originals ?? Surplus sales have these for
under $20US each

Again apologies for the off topic post

Regards from a chilly Sydney..

[Elecraft] Slightly off top amp question

2006-06-27 Thread David Douglass
Apologies in advance for the off topic question!

I've just bought an old FL-2100B amp to do up, and run with my K2 (I have
the bits and pieces on order for the external keying circuit!!).

When trying the amp out I found that I am getting a pretty high input SWR,
and thought I should Align the input coils on the amp.

This seemed to work OK on 40m, and 15 and 10m are not too bad (~2:1), but I
have a very high input SWR on 80 and 20 irrespective of where I tune the
slugs.

It looks like the valves in the Amp are the original Centron 572B/T160's,
which are lighting up, but are obviously very old (20 years I would
imagine).

If the valves were on the way out, could this account for my inability to
tune the input coils, or should I look elsewhere for the problem ?

See I managed to get a reference in there for the K2!!

Thanks

[Elecraft] Re: UK import duty

2006-06-15 Thread David Douglass

When I got my first K2, I had to pay 10% of valve (~$75AUS) at the post
office before I could collect it. I was told this was applicable for all
imported items above $500AUS. When I got my second K2 earlier this year I
also expected to have to pay the same amount, but was informed by the local
postmaster, that customs couldn't be bothered to collect the money on postal
items anymore, and I didn't have to pay a thing.

Obviously the Australian government are ripping us off enough in income tax,
to not have to worry about VAT on imports..

[Elecraft] K2 160m QSO

2006-06-05 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Just thought I would report my first 160m K2 QSO.. I managed to work VI9NI
with my basic K2, loading my short 80m vertical antenna. The K2 tuner would
only manage a SWR of 5:1 on this, and therefore the power was rolled back to
about 3w on the radio.

Norfolk is my 9th country on Top Band, in 9 years of hamming... At this rate
I should make DXCC on 160m by the time I'm 140 or so.

Perhaps a low powered 6m/2m CW/SSB with FM option rig would be a

reasonable project? Something designed as a starting point for the

VHF/UHF weak signal operators' basic radio.

Great idea, even without the FM option.

TenTec discontinued its 6n2 rig. Insufficient demand?

[Elecraft] Receiver comparison K2 v FT1000mp

2006-03-08 Thread David Douglass
I've recently completed my second K2 and have been running some side by side
trials with my FT1000mp.

My first time around, the K2 was my only rig and having nothing to compare
it against I had an element of self doubt that something I put together
could perform as well as an off the shelf radio. In the end I sold the K2
and bought myself a FT1000mp, which I've had for a couple of years. To cut a
long story short I took the plunge and got another K2 a month back, and
since construction have been comparing the receiver against that of the
FT1000mp.

I've got no test gear to speak of, and have just been switching between the
two and comparing received signals by ear. What I can report is that at no
time were there signals on the bands that I could hear on the Yaesu that I
couldn't copy equally as well as on the K2. This is even listening to weak
and noisy 80m DX signals.

One major difference I did note between the 2 receivers was the overall
audio tone in my headphones of the background noise. It's hard to describe,
but when comparing the 2 radios using 500hz filter settings, it almost
sounded as if the filters on the K2 were much narrower.

I was having a listen again today and decided to hook both radio's up
through the soundcard and compare them using spectrogram. Both radios were
set to 500hz filter settings (I have all of the optional filters installed
in the Yaesu), and again I switched between them and observed the display in
spectrogram. Lo and behold, the filter bandwidth on the K2 was roughly 500hz
as you would expect, but the FT1000mp showed a filter bandwidth in the
region of 800hz.

I'd always run the Yaesu using the 500hz filters and liked the tone of the
radio, and I was wondering why I preferred a filter bandwidth on the K2
around 800hz... well now I know why!

I'll probably hang onto the FT1000mp, as I like all features and it performs
well, but it's good to know that the K2 (which cost less than the additional
filters in the Yaesu) can receive just as well.

Just another couple of observations...

1. Along with some recent options I bought for the K2 I ordered a 'finger
dimple'. I must say it was $5 very well spent, as I definitely fall into the
camp of those who do not like the K2 tuning knob.

2. Also very impressed with internal ATU for the K2. I have a Cushcraft R8
vertical, which I have always struggled to tune on 80m (I know it is a 40-10
antenna). Even the KAT100 which I had first time around would not tune it.
Just for fun I tried the internal ATU tonight and it had no problems, and
whilst I was listening to the 80 I even managed to work 3D2(Rotuma) and
YJ(Vanuatu) using 10w CW. Good stuff !!

I hope I can make the trip and work of few of you in the EQP, although I'll
be primarily be having a go in the Commonwealth contest at the same time.

David, Vk2NU

[Elecraft] K2 NB Diode

2006-03-03 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I've just finished a putting together most of the options for the K2, the
final one being the Noise Blanker. Ham fisted as I am, I managed to break
one of the glass bodied diodes (D3 1N34A). I replaced this with a 1N5711
which is listed as an alternative in the manual, but was just wondering
whether I should try to source one of the originals or whether I should not
worry about it.

I was just curious as the 1N34A seems to be a much harder a part to get, and
wondered why Elecraft would use these instead of the 1N5711 (which appear to
be pretty common parts), if there was no 'performance' difference between
the two?

[Elecraft] Unused back panel holes

2006-02-25 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Regarding the unused holes on the K2 back-panel.. I've been thinking about
plugging these with rubber plugs, as I think the holes/green tape looks a
little unsightly. I wonder if anyone has done this, and whether anyone knows
a source of plugs that are suitable and the correct size.

I'm specifically looking for the plugs for the 2 sets of XVTR holes, as all
the rest are soon to be filled in with accessories..

Cheers

[Elecraft] K2 internal battery.. (and MFJ headset)

2006-02-22 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Just a quick question(s)..

I've just finished my K2 and have a few of the options on order, including
the internal battery kit. I was reading the on-line manual and noticed the
info about supply voltage required to charge the battery. This states 14.0
+/- 0.2v at the jack, or 13.7 on the internal voltmeter.

I have a small switch-mode supply I use with the radio which according to my
DMM is giving 13.9v on the jack, but the internal voltmeter is reading only
13.3v. I have 2 cheap DMM's and they are both giving 13.9v on the jack, so
I'm hoping these are a little closer to the truth than the internal
voltmeter.

How critical is the 14v, and would it be too much of a problem if the supply
was actually running at 13.4 - 13.5v from the point of view of charging the
battery ??

On a different subject all together, I've also ordered the SSB module, and
was thinking of using an MFJ headset I've had sitting about for ages (model
MFJ-393). I just wondered whether anyone had tried one of these, and had any
thoughts (apart from the usual comments about MFJ !!). I'd planned to wire
the mic socket up with the 5.6k resistor supplied with SSB kit as the mic
element requires 1-9v. If this fails I have a MH-31 from my FT1000..

Cheers

[Elecraft] Re: fixed audio output on mic socket (David Douglass)

2006-02-21 Thread David Douglass

As per my experiments with fixed audio out on pin 8 of the mic socket...

Don and Sverre were both correct in their assessment that changing the value
of the 10k resistor would make little difference. I tried a 3k and 2k in
it's place and could detect no noticeable difference.

I did however manage to fix my problem by simply using the 'mic' socket on
the PC soundcard, instead of the 'line-in'. In fact I need to run with the
slider control on the soundcard set-up at virtually zero, or it will
overload.

Thanks to Don and Sverre for their advice...Much appreciated guys.

David, VK2NU

David,

I would say the answer is 'maybe'. And the reason for the uncertainly is
that it depends on what you are driving. The impedance of whatever you
connect to the far end of the resistor will determine how much current will
be drawn and the voltage developed across it.

You can install the fixed audio board between the front panel and control
board if you lay the resistor and capacitors down flat on the board. The
fixed audio board will provide up to about 3 volts to the soundcard, and
that is much more than enough to overdrive it.

Don W3FPR

 -Original Message-

I'm just playing about with my K2 and have performed the mod to
 get a fixed
audio out on pin 8 on the mic socket as per LA3ZA's instructions, using a
10k resistor between R3 and the mic socket.

This works fine, but the audio out isn't quite enough to drive my PC
soundcard to the level I would like. I have a small board here
 (as per Don's
W3FPR design) for the small audio amp, but would prefer if possible to get
the audio out of the mic socket without having to install this board.

My question is.would I be-able to get more audio out of pin 8 if I
change the value of the 10k resistor in LA3ZA's mod ??

 Cheers All

[Elecraft] K2 #5334 up an running

2006-02-08 Thread David Douglass

Hi All,

I have K2 # 5334 up and running after completing the alignment stages today.
I actually had the thing finished a week ago, but had managed to install U4
backwards on the RF Board, so have been patiently waiting for a new chip to
arrive from Elecraft.

I should be happy with one mistake, as I had several on my first K2.

I'm looking forward to comparing the K2 to my FT1000mp, as my first time
around the K2 was my only radio.

[Elecraft] 80M Preamp request

2004-09-12 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

A little bit off topic I'm afraid, but I'm looking at utilising the RX
antenna socket on my K2/100..

I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of a good 80m (or 80/160m)
preamp ?? I've seen the KD9SV web-site but wondered what else was available.
Something in kit form would be even better.

Many thanks

[Elecraft] Fixed audio output

2004-06-28 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

I've just done the Mod as suggested by LA3ZA to get a fixed audio output via
pin 8 of the Mic socket on my K2. I'd originally built a little amp for this
but found that I didn't need it, and there was sufficient audio output
direct to the soundcard for the few digital programs I have tried !!

I need to have the Soundcard Mic volume set to about 60% for sufficient
audio out, as opposed to about 20% with my old TS570, but all seems to be
working fine.

Just thought anyone contemplating the same Mod might be interested, and
might save you a few dollars in parts for an audio amp..

Just need to align some filters now for PSK and RTTY, and I'll be set to
go..

[Elecraft] KPA 100 Alignment Question

2004-06-14 Thread david . douglass

Hi All,

Have just completed my KPA100, and am at the aligment stage.

Regarding the aligment of R6 (Bias set).

The manual says to connect your DMM in series with the positive power lead,
with
the + lead of the DMM to the power supply and the - lead to the KPA100 side.

I assume this means I connect the +lead of the DMM to + terminal of the PSU,
and the -lead of the DMM to +pin of the power connecter where it enters the
radio?? Is this correct??

Just for interests sake, what am I actually doing at this stage of the
alignment?

Cheers
