Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - can't change antennas on 6 meters

2023-03-21 Thread Dennis Moore
I'd still suspect the config settings, this test just showed that the
KAT-500 is doing well mechanically. The tuner is getting a signal from
the K3 telling it what band you're on so appears to be limiting your
options based on that band. You can repeat the mode/ant test with the
radio off, you should get the same results as with the control cables
disconnected.

In the utility, Edit Configuration, Antenna tab, go through each of the
band settings and enable whatever antennas should be available on that
band. If you've already done that and it still isn't working right, I
don't know where to go next.

Thanks for the suggestion. Good test.

I reconnect the control cables, and the symptom of not being able to change to
antennas other than antenna 3 on 50 MHz, returns.

So one conclusion: maybe not the KAT500 settings.

they wouldn't change much over the life of the tuner other than some
temperature and aging effects (but even the cal vs. temperature could be

To my knowledge all commercially available tuners simply display the measured

Re: [Elecraft] Signals wild...signals caged

2021-01-28 Thread Dennis Moore

Your missive is more timely than you could imagine.

I can call CQ on FT8 or SSB, not on CW. Sure, my K3 will send a perfect
CQ via macro, indistinguishable from any other K3 sending a programmed
CQ except the callsign. Problem is when someone comes back to me, if the
decoder isn't working perfectly then I can't understand what's being
said. That's definitely on me, and I acknowledge that.

I'm at 177 DX entities on CW, all through the K3 and either in contests
or Dxpeditions. In both cases I know who I'm calling, I know when they
come back with my call and signal report, and I know which KPod or N1MM
buttons to push to complete the exchange. Conversation? Not if my life
depended on it.

I'm over 120 countries on FT8/FT4 since Jan 1st and the pickings are
getting slim. One JA or PY station is just like the other after a few
thousand. With few Dxpeditions on the horizon and CW contests really not
my cup of tea, yesterday I reached for the CW materials and plugged the
key back in. It's time to do this on my own.

Whoever runs across me calling CQ on CW will have heard a rare bird indeed.

It is possible that the K3 is outputting transverter band info, but since it

Re: [Elecraft] AX-1/K-2/K-1

2018-11-19 Thread Dennis Moore

I posted about this on 10/22. Here's what I wrote:

Here are a couple of observations on using the AX1 on the K2/10 with
internal tuner. First off, I know that this is promoted for the KX2/KX3
and similar radios, the AX1 page doesn't list the K2 as a compatible
product and probably doesn't get much use in /PM.

With the K2 sitting flat, the AXB1 Whip Bipod legs aren't quite long
enough to be effective. They do touch the table with maybe 1/2" of space
between the legs. If you're using the K2 on an uneven surface they may
not provide any support at all. I think another 1/4" - 1/2" of length
would solve that. With the bail extended and the front of the K2
elevated the legs work fine but of course the antenna is no longer
perfectly vertical

K2 internal tuner tests were performed with the whip fully extended and
the supplied radial wire laid out to its full length and tightened under
the ground post as well as it could be. The pre-installed lug does not
fit around the ground post. Switch position was appropriate for each
band tested. On 20m the internal tuner found a good match wherever I was
in the band. That is to be expected as the antenna was designed for 20m
with no tuner. On 17m the best match I could get was 3.3:1, and on 15m I
got a 1.1:1 match pretty much throughout the band.

I don't know what caused the issue on 17m since it worked fine on 20 and
15. On my KX3 the AX1 tuned up fine on all three bands so I don't
suspect an issue with the antenna, it must be the K2 tuner although it
tunes other antennas well on 17m. I'll do some more playing around and
if I get different results I'll post them.

and haven't tried actually transmitting cw or phone? If so, and I don't
know how it would have changed, have you checked the Menu-Config-TUN PWR
to see what it is set to? If it is set to .1 it will show 0.0

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 antenna selection

2018-07-03 Thread Dennis Moore
Manual/Automatic is not used for overriding antenna selection, it turns
on or off the automatic initiation of a tune cycle when high SWR is
detected for the antenna that is currently selected. Many users will
tune each of their antennas on separate bands using automatic then
switch it to manual so that it doesn't attempt to retune that antenna
again.

effect when I'm in Manual mode. I cannot manually select the antenna I wish to
connect because my Manual selection is overridden by the table selection
appropriate for the last transmitted frequency.

Why doesn't Manual mode give me full manual control? Why can't I select the

wrong or is this an intentional limitation of the firmware design.

Correct, if your K3 is appropriately configured. IIRC, there is a necessary

Got a question about using my K3 with WSJT-X 1.8.0 with FT8

I started looking at the “time bar” in WSJT-X and when the K3’s red TX light
comes on with the meter showing RF going out. It is between 1.5 and 2 seconds
after the beginning of the new 15 second sequence! In that short duration, I am
hearing other stations’ signals coming through on my headphones, so I know that
other folks are getting their rig to transmit right at the start of the 15
second sequence. If mine is coming on 1.5 - 2 seconds late, I’m thinking I may
not always get decoded on the other end.

So, I switched over to my KX3 running the same version of WSJT-X and observed
what happened there. No delay - when the new 15 second sequence starts, the KX3
goes into transmit almost immediately.

Both the KX3 and the K3 are connected to two identical Tascam USB125M external
sound cards.

Is there some setting on the K3 that is causing my transmissions to fire off a
tad late?

How is it for listening to AM broadcast? How does it do with the

out below the antenna. That would be the easiest thing and simple to employ.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and LDG Tuner question

2014-04-10 Thread Dennis Moore
I use LDG tuners here with my K3. No interface cable is needed, just the
RF between the K3 and the LDG. When the LDG senses RF it will start to
tune. Press and hold XMIT to start the tune process, tap it again when
the LDG finds a match. I have both a 100 and 600 watt tuner, I always
reduce the power out from the K3 before tuning although with these
tuners I suspect it's not really necessary. The K3 reduces power on its
own when the SWR is too high and will bring it back up by itself when
the SWR falls below 3:1, so at least you're not slamming the LDG with
high power when the match is way off.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 digital mode questions

2014-02-20 Thread Dennis Moore
Thanks Don, I think I can get a handle on most of that except the
swapping LSB/USB. If my interpretation is correct I should generally set
the K2 to RTTY without Rev and it'll automatically select LSB or USB
depending upon band? Rev would be used only in special circumstances?
I'll dig through the parts box for a capacitor tomorrow, get the filters
set up again, and give it a shot.

Thanks. 73, Dennis

On 2/19/2014 8:44 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote:

Dennis,

First a clarification - if the band is below 15 meters, RTTY is LSB
and RTTY REV is USB.
You don't have to worry about that on bands above 15 meters because
the K2 automatically makes the corrective swap, but when aligning the
filters, use a band below 15 meters so as not to mix the sidebands.

Secondly, since you run out of range when aligning the 400 Hz filter
width at 1000 Hz, your BFO range is not correct (too high) on the low
frequency side. That can usually be corrected by adding a small value
capacitor (10 pF to 22 pF) between the junction of the crystals and
C174 and ground - a capacitor between pins 6 and 3 of U11 is a good
place to insert it. Check the BFO range against the manual range
limits after adding the capacitor and adjust the capacitor value as
required.

[Elecraft] K2 digital mode questions

2014-02-19 Thread Dennis Moore
I'm trying to get my K2 (SN 5711) working on digital modes, initially
just WSPR. I have the fixed audio output wired to pin 5 of the Mic
header, going to a Signalink USB which is working fine. Audio in/out,
keying, all just fine. If I transmit on WSPR my signal is being heard on
80m whether I'm in RTTY or RTTY REV. That in itself seems odd. I'm not
able to decode any signals even though I can hear them. I'm having a
hard time wrapping my brain around RTTY, RTTY REV, and when to use which
mode. Also have questions about setting up the filters using
Spectrogram. I've got the manual and I've searched the web for answers
which probably just added to the confusion.

First issue: RTTY REV as it applies to USB/LSB
On 80m, mode RTTY, am I transmitting on LSB or USB?
If RTTY is LSB, when I switch to REV am I then transmitting on USB?
Is that true on all bands? I read about sidebands switching above 17m on
the K2. What exactly does that mean, and what effect does that have on
which sideband I'm transmitting on? When would I use RTTY vs RTTY REV?
If digital modes normally use USB, shouldn't I always be set to RTTY REV?

Second issue: Setting up filters
I read Don's advice regarding setting up filters for JT65 but it wasn't
clear to me about BF2, BF3, BF4. Don said to center the filter at 1000
Hz, and that the high value should be used for RTTY REV and the low
value should be used for RTTY. Say I have a filter setting of 700 Hz. In
Spectrogram I see a 700 Hz wide noise signal, do I center the peak of
that signal on 1000 Hz? I know that if I adjust the BF value to center
on 1000 Hz at 4912.85 that I can keep adjusting the value until my noise
disappears outside the filter and then will reappear and I can center it
again on a value of 4914.74. Should this high value should be used when
I'm setting the filter for RTTY or RTTY REV?

Third issue: BF4 running out of range
As I'm trying to adjust the center of the signal at 1000 Hz the filter
seems to run out of tuning range right before I get it centered, and the
value of the BF jumps from it's low value to it's high value.

I know that a lot of this is pretty basic but I'm just trying to get my
thoughts on this straight. It seemed to be a lot easier getting my K3 up
on WSPR but I think getting this K2/10 is just the thing for weak signal
digital work.

Thanks for any and all advice.

I also wound one of these ununs according to their directions. The
drawback to this antenna is that it uses the shield of the feedline as
the counterpoise. If you try ferrite beads, or even winding an air
choke, I would think they'd need to be closer to the rig than to the unun.

I got the kit John talks about and made the antenna. Its was quick and fun to

using just for RX to test a IC-718 and I hooked it up to the UNUN box instead
of the 30' wire that came with the kit. Its below 2:1 on 6m, 12m, 17m, 40m and
less then 4:1 on 10, 20m, 80m and about 6:1 on 30m, 160m. The only really high
one is 60m. So really all but 60m are tunable by the KX3 tuner board. I am
using what I remember to be about 15' of RG-58/U. My Shack area is on the
second floor of the house and the wire goes out my window and down to the back
fence.

My problem is I am getting RF coming back into the shack (on just 5W) where it
will reset my USB hub a few feet away from the radio. Not fun when trying to
work digital modes. This only happens on some bands but I know happens on 20m
where I try and work the most. I expect its just the ones less resonate that
its doing it on but I need to check again.

Will adding a number of ferrite on the feed line help choke the RF? Will
winding the feed line around a tube to make an air choke work? I guess that one
is cheep enough I should just try it. Buying 10 or more ferrite to clamp to the
line costs more ;)

What about using a longer feed line? I really don't want to add a counterpoise
and the instructions said it does not need one. I could use the 30' antenna
wire it came with if that is going to help. I would not think so since its
resonate on so many bands and tunable on the others.

[Elecraft] K3 WSPR settings that work for me

2013-01-16 Thread Dennis Moore
There are various discussions both on and off this list about how to set
up the K3 with the Signalink USB when using WSPR, but I ran into a
problem with the K3 staying in XMIT after sending was complete.
Solutions were available online, just none that solved my issue. These
settings got my K3 working on WSPR. The setup listed for the K3 and
Signalink are also working with RMS Express and DM-780.

The Signalink USB Interface cable I am using is the SLCABK3. This is the
cable that provides Line In, Line Out, and PTT. I did not want to use
VOX, and the rear panel PTT jack was already used by a footswitch so I
did not use the PTT plug on the Signalink interface cable.

K3 setup:
RS232 cable between K3 and PC (using USB-Serial adapter)
Mode: TX Data
Data Mode: Data A
Config - PTT-Key - dtr-OFF

Signalink USB setup:
All controls to midrange
Interface cable plugged into Line In and Line Out jacks on rear of K3
PTT plug not used
Signalink USB jumpers set according to this page, follow directions for
K3 using rear panel jacks:
http://www.tigertronics.com/sl_wirebm.htm#Elecraft

WSPR settings:
Menu Setup - Station Parameters
PTT method: DTR
PTT port: COM3 (set up according to your own PC port)
Enable CAT - Selected
CAT port: COM3 (set up according to your own PC port)
Rig number: 229 Elecraft K3
Serial rate: 38400
Data Bits: 8
Stop bits: 2
Handshake: None

Again, these are settings that are working for me that someone else may
want to try if they are having issues. I'm not looking for feedback on
how I could have done it better, but feel free to reply with your settings.

[Elecraft] K2 - Cost estimate for repairs

2012-12-03 Thread Dennis Moore
I bought a used K2 and it was damaged during shipment. The UPS place
that packed it wrapped it in plastic and set it on the bottom of a box
with no padding around the bottom or sides so that the VFO knob was
against the side of the box along a bottom edge. The only padding was on
top. The VFO shaft was bent up, VFO knob was dented, AF and RF Gain pots
were damaged and need to be replaced. I'm waiting for Elecraft to let me
know how much the two pots and the VFO Encoder will cost.

This is insured, but UPS wants to see the radio to assess the damage,
like they would have any idea. I can give them the cost of the parts but
how much should I ask for in cost to repair the radio? I can do the
repairs myself but realistically how much is my time worth according to
UPS? They'll probably want a repair estimate from a shop, which as we
know isn't how this is done.

Sending the radio back to the seller isn't an option.

Any comments/feedback is appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Cost estimate for repairs

2012-12-03 Thread Dennis Moore
Thanks everybody for the replies. I've got some ideas on what to do if
UPS wants repair estimates. Toying around with it, I was able to
straighten the encoder shaft. Don't know if I was shifting the position
of the encoder within the case or the shaft in the encoder, but at any
rate it now appears straight, turns smoothly and doesn't seem to have
any tuning errors. Not loose or wobbly at all. When I get in to the
front panel I'll see where it was bent.

Yeah, you'll say I should have left it alone until after UPS looks at it
but I'm a tinkerer and want to get this radio on the air. If I can get
by with just replacing the AF and RF gain pots then that's what I'll do.
They need to be replaced but they work if I adjust them just right.
Touchy settings.

Don mentioned offline that the K2 encoder changed to the same style as
used in the K3, when did that change occur? This K2 is #5711.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Schedule

2012-03-06 Thread Dennis Moore
At the Elecraft booth at Radiofest this past weekend in Monterey I was
given an estimated release of late summer for the amp. Saw a Powerpoint
slide of the amp, looks kinda like a finned stereo amplifier you might
find in a car stereo. I'd guess something the size of a brick with fins
on top, same rectangular shape just not as tall. Didn't see the connectors.

Don't use the accessory battery box, not needed. Set bias on in the K3
and go for it.

When does this electret mic need to be biased?

 Please advise.
It doesn't matter much which USB port you plug into, it's what serial
port that USB device is saying it is on. If your USB-serial adapter says
it's on COM3 then set your utility to COM3, and so forth.

I don't have one plugged in so couldn't tell you where to check to see
what it's reporting, maybe device manager. Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Boom Mike for K3

2012-01-24 Thread Dennis Moore
I got the CM500 from BH for $44.99 free shipping, delivered last week.
Don't know why other places charge 60-70. Anyway, net operator gave me
good audio report and told me I sounded the same on both the CM500 and
my Heil PR20 desk mike.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=cm500N=0InitialSearch=yes

Obviously this price and free shipping was for stateside delivery, not
much help to VA3.
