[Elecraft] K4 to KPA500?

I see an app note about connecting the K3 to to a KPA500/KAT500.
As I prepare for my K4, is there any difference in the interconnections?

2021-01-18 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
There was a case a while back where a ham had his license pulled because he
was convicted of telecom fraud.
IIRC, the FCC said it was evidence that he was unwilling to follow the
rules.
And I think it only came visible because he protested, or filed to get it
reinstated.
I suspect Phil can recall more details.
It's been a while.

That's because up to now it was unthinkable that licensed hams would use
amateur radio in the commission of crimes. The law and the enforcement
apparatus always was there, though, and was used without any publicity.
We're going through violent times now and it's sad that such a notice
had to be issued. Violators can't say that they weren't warned.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Now: shipboard callsigns, was: W vs K broadcast station callsigns,

2020-10-08 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
It turns out there are TWO ways you can get a 4 letter call for a
shipboard station-
You can have a licensed radiotelegraph station, OR
you can have small boats with permanent radio installations.
In 2014/5 I got OLIVER HAZARD PERRY the callsign KOHZ by citing that rule when
we did our original application, and installed radios in our small boats.

And as lagniappe, when BOUNTY was foundering in late October of 2012,
the master was licensed as KD4OHZ, and we used the Winlink station on board
with his callsign to communicate with the USCG by email.
I've always wondered if the former callsign was related to the latter. since
both boats were in the same category as sailing school vessels, and someone
at the FCC picked up on that. But probably not.

[Elecraft] Updating K3?

2020-06-18 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
I have K3 #22, the second K3 ordered, and the first delivered.
I want to upgrade it as much as practical, given that I'm not being
very active, and it's a good size
for taking along on possible trips. I'm working on an interesting
trip on a traditional vessel.
I have the Cady book on upgrading; a new interface, antenna and
transverter interface,
two synthesizers, the general coverage filters mods, stainless steel
screws, and a couple of small things.
I don't know if the PA power connection parts are in the stash, but
that should be easy.

Cady's book says it's not known at the time he wrote this if other
things are worth doing, but that book is
from 2015.
So is there a document, or consensus, about what else should be done?

[Elecraft] OT: The Colpitts mystery

2020-04-29 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-717-1197
I took the commercial tests in '69. I seem to recall having to learn
the various oscillator circuits.
I was an ATN2 on night check in VA-125 in Lemoore, CA.
The night check AT shop Chief wanted to get his 2nd class
Radiotelephone so he could work
on aircraft electronics when he retired, so he had the whole night
check shop studying.
I'd been doing electronics and radio for a number of years, so I was
teaching everyone.
A bunch of us went up to Fresno for the exam and I was the first one
done. I was also the only one
who got a 1st Radiotelephone, the rest got 3rd at best, even the Chief.
I managed to pick up a broadcast endorsement in SC after I got out,
and then many years later
when I started sailing on tall ships, I heard about GMDSS, so studied
that and added GMDSS Operator/Maintainer
with a Radar endorsement on top of the GROL that my 1st had turned
into. It turns out, for international
compliance, the USCG required a STCW-approved course to add GMDSS to
my Merchant Mariners Credential,
so I had to do a 10-day course, with practical evaluations, and essay
questions! So I did that, arguing with the
instructor the whole time, simce I gave correct answers, but not what
he expected. The other three people
in the course dropped out quickly- their company had sent them, but
they actually didn't need it on their MMC.

I have to admit I'm a little baffled as to why any different knobs would be

The input to the P3 is an IF signal, 8.215 MHz in the case of the K3.
The input to the PX3 is an I/Q baseband signal so that it can work with
the KX3.

Within the limitations imposed by that, we tried to make the
functionality of the PX3 as identical to the P3 as possible.

if the putput may go as high as +12V, but a series resistor and diode

If you're REALLY serious about using the right tools, and do any

Phillips or Frearson (Reed Prince). Compatible screw heads are
usually
identifiable by a single depressed dot or an X to one side of the

ditto on the high quality screwdrivers...

And, replace them every now and then because even high-quality will
become
worn over the years. You want the flutes to have nice clean sharp
edges --
any rounding at all (which is common on poor quality new

result in stripped screw heads more often.

Also, you can take a file (I use a saw sharpening file, triangular)

Driver and use it. Round up all the Reed and Prince cheap

screwdrivers

that you bought at the bargain store and preferably throw them

away, if

not keep them with the punches, that is all they are good for.

Buy a

static mat, read the instructions and use it. Read the

construction

manual from front to back. If you don't understand them, read

them again

and again until you do. If you still don't understand them, get

help

until you do. Before you do anything read the appropriate part

again so

you really know what to do. Follow the instructions in the order

the

manual prescribes and be sure you understand each step. When you

need to

plug in a part, make sure that you have the right plug and socket

then use

as much force as required to seat the plug fully. When assembling
something, if it will not go, loosen some screws so you can move

it a

little then be sure to
tighten them before you go on. There is no magic formula, just be

careful

and forget the hi-hi until you are sending Morse. It is easy, but

every

step is important and must be done correctly.

along Shockley Dr. to our local parks and recreation district. Auburn isn't
very big and excitement sort of resembles the solar cycle [every 11 years or so

racist views since the bequest required that the land be named in his and his

in their name, and no plaque or monument will ever appear.

A Pozidriv #1 screwdriver will kind-of work with the Phillips screws in

Even with a good-quality Phillips #1 driver, my 700-series K3 is now on

Good advice Don.

Another thing that will destroy Phillips head screws is the use of a
reed and prince screw driver, so verify that you are REALY using a
Phillips screw driver.

The very tip of a Phillips screw driver is blunt, not sharp, but a
reed and prince screw driver (which looks very much like a Phillips)
is sharp on the tip and will not seat completely in a Phillips screw,
thus slipping and destroying the socket.

Beware when buying inexpensive screw drivers that are call Phillips
screw drivers. Check the tip and make sure it's not sharp.

You will be able to remove the front panel by removing the other 2
screws in the 2D connector, and then you should be able to rotate the 2D

Elecraft does have replacement screws. You do not have to purchase the
SS kit, just order by the part number listed in the assembly manual -
you can order one or any multiple you want.

The proper size screwdriver is a #1 Phillips which should be available
worldwide. Do not use a worn Phillips screwdriver, it is certain to
slip and strip out the screwhead. If you have had trouble, I suggest
you invest in a new screwdriver.

I use my #1 Phillips more than most in my Elecraft repair activities,
but if I find my screwdriver does not firmly hold a screw when the
screwdriver shaft is held horizontally, that tip is worn sufficiently
that it should be replaced. I do not want to strip out the screwheads
on my customer's equipment. In other words, do not use worn screwdriver
tips and all should be well.

Up till now, I just added a couple of additional filters and the KV3A

Today I found that one of the upper front panel screws was probably
overtightened (or defective).
I tried to unscrew the screw with several phillips screwdrivers
(little and big), to no avail.
The side effect of my (unsuccessful) tentatives was that:
1) I was not able to unscrew the screw
2) now the screw head is damaged (see pic at

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/V1aTCoSq5qkgs3y-beE_DdMTjNZETYmy

I got to unassemble the front panel unscrewing a couple of screws
more, but I'd like to solve this little problem (moreover, it's ugly).
Before going with some more destructive methods (I am thinking about
drilling the screw??), I'd like to have some savy suggestion from the
community...
Moreover, do you know if Elecraft has an additional screw kit
available (I don't need the stainless steel ones)?

As a side note, I found that almost all the flat-head screws were very
soft and damage-prone (differently from the other round-head screws).
