As a former K2 owner I can say at least half the fun of one of these was to
build it myself.

This is one of the last kinds of major kits that involve assembling all the
components onto a circuit board. Today with all the surface mount devices
the technical challenge is too much for most of us and kits largely become a
mechanical assembly of already completed circuit boards.

I don't know the answer to the question though I agree with someone else who
said they are different commodities. However, in the long run an unopened
kit may be worth a small fortune, like some unopened games and Barbie dolls
are. The K2 deliveries are presently TBD . . . I have one (my fifth) on
order and no ESD is posted. I assume it's a parts problem. The K2 has
already had a number of small component modifications made as the
traditional parts have become unobtainable or uneconomic. If it were
possible to place an order for the final five S/Ns, whenever that happens,
I'd pay for them today. What say, Wayne -- will you make me that deal?

Hello all,
Does anyone have experience as far as which is more marketable?
Assembled or unassembled? Is there a price difference in posting either for
sale?
Thanks!

"Could you note some of the 'fixes' that are not noted in the release
notes?"

I don't have a complete summary in one place. I'll try to put one together
later. A few that come to mind are:

Does not fault when tuning with low power Less likely to end a full tune
sequence with a poor match Antenna selection logic fixed in BYP mode

"Second, this firmware is marked 'Beta'. I typically don't install stuff
until it is the production version. So are the changes/enhancements
significant enough and the Beta is tested well enough such that I should go
ahead and install the firmware the next time I'm at the ham station in
November (I operate remotely)? The currently installed firmware is 01.75. "

I don't load alpha or beta software unless I expect to gain something from
it. If you have no problems with your current installation, and don't need
any of the new features, why take the risk.

"Third, am I correct that the I can use an earlier version of the KAT500
utility to install the new firmware and that older utility software will
'play nice' with the new firmware? The currently installed KAT500 Utility
is v1.16.7.25 that has a 2016 copyright date. ""

The old utility has features that are no longer supported in the new
firmware. The new firmware has features that are not supported by the
older utility. However, basic functionality such as displaying and editing
the tuning solution should still be compatible.

Db9/serial port problem

I have read the Elecraft K3s manual, K3 manual, Expert 2K manual.. realize that
I need to try to use db9..(RJ45) and have been told to use a Y connector (using
the y connector I purchased from Elecraft for P3 display but I don’t use it)..
and connect only two wires to Expert (ground and RXD- but NOT tXD)-and the the
other Y I fed through a USB convertor. That goes to a Dell Win 10 computer
which doesn’t even allow one to see comm ports in device manager. Yes I tried
“hidden devices” but never saw Comm port or LPT anywhere.

Guess I might have to go back to a “legacy computer -windows 7, or make my
linux mint do it.. I do have WSJTX running fine on IC-7600, and CiV com talks
to Expert 2K fine.

Doesn’t work.

Maybe the RJ45, to two serial Db9 connectors isn’t really a split serial port.??

Any quick and easy guide to make the RJ45 work…??

Doug,

I have a write up here: https://www.w8fgu.com/k2pan.html for using a SDRPlay
unit and HDSDR software to make a panadapter that works pretty well on the
K2. It requires the IF Buffer amp designed by Jack Smith, K8ZOA (SK) and
sold by DX Engineering to be installed in the K2 to provide K2 IF output for
the SDRPlay unit.

This purpose-designed digital transceiver for FT8 (and other digital modes)
has received some attention recently:
https://midnightdesignsolutions.com/phaser/

Not exactly revolutionary, but compact QRP design needing only a laptop - or
even something like a Raspberry Pi - to use with digital modes.

John,

The K2/10 does not have a KEYOUT signal, so you would have to add one to key
the KXPA100 (it is not a kit available from Elecraft). You can see what
needs to be added at http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/index_k2.html
- scroll down to K2 (basic) External T-R Relay Driver. Contrary to what is
stated, no kits are available - N0SS is SK.

Other than that, the K2 is still a good transceiver even though it is a
22 year old design.

Re: [Elecraft] Update on K4 manuals

Subject: [Elecraft] Update on K4 manuals

I thought I'd post an update given the many questions on this topic. I'm the
bottleneck on documentation, something that wasn't supposed to happen,
but...stuff happened. No need to rehash that.

There are three major documents in the works:

1. K4 Built-In Operating Manual

This is an .html document normally viewed on the K4's LCD or external
monitor. You get to it by tapping the button labeled "?" in the
lower-left-hand corner of the LCD.

For review purposes the doc can be viewed in any browser. And in fact, late
next week we'll be looking for a few hardy volunteers who don't mind going
through 60 pages of text, trying every link.

In the radio context, the operating manual is supplemented by direct
hyperlinks attached to every control and menu entry. There's a "LAST
CONTROL" button that takes you directly to text most closely associated with
the last operation performed.

2. K4 Owner's Manual

Because of its multitude of full-color illustrations, the owner's manual
will be 150-200 pages when finished. It'll be a fully searchable and indexed
.pdf file, and two steps up from our earlier manuals. Early K4 users have
been using a much smaller document that has many of the same illustrations.

The built-in operating manual provides the framework for the owner's manual,
so I expect rapid progress on the latter as soon as the former is blessed.

3. K4 Programmer's Reference

An early draft of this doc has been in use by a our team and by a few
developers who have been vetting it for us. Many of the apps available for
the K3/K3S are already working with the K4 in emulation mode. But we're
trying to expedite the public version of the reference so developers can
take advantage of all of the new features.

* * *

If you have specific questions about the K4 documentation that I didn't
answer above, feel free to post them to the list, or to email me directly
(though I have a feeling my inbox is about to become more popular than
usual, so I can't guarantee I'll get back to you instantly).

As usual, thanks for your patience.

73,
Wayne

Ronnie, it's a REFLOCK board that is installed INSIDE the 2M module It is
"highly recommended" (was), so that IMPLIES that the 2M module can be used
without it, but at some sort of reduced accuracy in frequency I would guess.

My 2M module install turned into the need to ship it in and fix several issues,
one of which I caused when I slipped and let the smoke out of a latching switch
circuit...

Works now... I'd ask Elecraft

Re: [Elecraft] Free shipping

I bought mine at Dayton about an hour or so after the opening over a year ago
and (I thought) That free shipping was included at the Fest. I've been wrong
before but can't wait to get mine. Anything worth having is worth waiting for
as I have been told. This might be just a tad later than I expected but the
testers have had plenty of time to get most of the bugs out of it.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Free shipping

Free shipping is an interesting idea.

First of all, I don’t have a boat in this race, I don’t have one on order and I
don’t see a K4 in my future. I see my Elecraft future as being portable,
temporary setups when time (magically) appears in my future…. I _assumed_ that
would happen when I (mostly) retired but it hasn’t yet - too many other
interesting things that I’m still physically capable of doing - more serious
radio will come later.

I understand that folks paid serious money quite a while ago to get a
spectacular radio and the combination of “typical” delays in getting such
sophisticated gear through production and shipping has been seriously extended
by parts availability. All that is incredibly frustrating - I spent a couple of
YEARS being customer technical representative for a couple of $1M+ ship-mounted
mapping sonars that never really worked “right.” It was a mess and I don’t
expect Elecraft to go down that road but it puts me in the position of
understanding both sides of the problem.

From my perspective as an owner of a well configured but rarely (yet) used KX3,
I think about priorities like this:

#1 - I want this (all) high quality manufacturer(s) of equipment I own to
continue to be in business (if/when I need support some day)

#2 - I also want them to have the resources (money, time , staff, tools, etc.)
to continue to innovate while continuing to support older gear as long as parts
are available

#3 - To achieve #1 and #2, they also need the resources to mange the business,
personnel, finances, etc. in addition to the engineering effectively.

#4 - when I purchase their product I want to feel like I got a good deal.

Achieving all of those is tough.

As I often remind myself: “Patience is a virtue, I’m gona get me some someday."

2020-06-02 Thread Ed Pflueger
I have a HY-Gain VB-66DX and 1.4 is the normal case basically across the whole
band. I must be messing up somewhere, even the KPA1500 likes it. I have never
run it over 1200 Watts on 6 meters and never requires over 30 watts drive to
obtain 1200 out. I have three feet of 213U from amp to Palstar HF-AUTO (Bypass
Mode), 70ft. of 9913 from the Palstar to a DX-Engineering 8 position Antenna
switch, to my lightening protection and the final trip of 40ft of 213U to the
antenna. The antenna is actually 10ft. above my HY-GAIN TH11 which also does
not require a tuner. The Palstar is my antenna switch essentially but I do
need it on my HY-GAIN HY-TOWER only on 160 and 80 meters when needed.

That's the end of my good luck story. LOL

As a rule, if one needs a tuner to get a good match on 6M, I'd say they need to
look carefully at their antenna system. My 6M yagi shows less than 1.5:1 over
the lower 2 MHz of the band, 50.0 - 52.0 MHz. The lowest SWR occurs at 50.2
with a Z value of 42 ohms and an X value of 0.0. Of course higher gain
antennas typically have a bit less bandwidth, but still, the lower 1 MHz should
be totally usable without a tuner.

Besides, tuners only make the transmitter happy and the added feed line loss
due to SWR still remains.

Likewise there seems to be a lot of pessimism when a product is in back order
status. If I really wanted a product, such as my K3S, there was a backlog of
orders. I placed the order and waited 3 months. No regrets in any aspect.

Re: [Elecraft] Which Paddle?

2020-05-05 Thread Ed Pflueger
When I used to work on Stromberg Carlson X-Y and EMD 4-wire telephone systems
we had little burnishers the we carried all the time because of the zillion
relays with contacts. If we would forget to bring them we would use 20 or
higher dollar bills and use them as a burnisher. They had less grease from
handling and did quite well as a burnisher.

Hi Tommy,

I designed both keys, but I prefer the KXPD2. I use a KXPD2 with the KX2
frequently and have never had a problem. We improved the design over time.

It weighs less than the KXPD3, takes up less space when packed, and is shorter
so when it’s used trailside, the paddle tips will be higher off the ground. The
adjustment tool is “docked” on the key as well so you can’t lose it.

(Bonus feature: if you use it outdoors often enough, it’ll gradually acquire a
slight amber tint that matches the LCD backlight color :)

I use the Palstar HF-Auto for 80 and 160. The Tuner in the KPA1500 works
great on my Hy-gain 6 meter, TH11, and Hy-Tower and it only has to teak just
a hair but normally I just leave the tuner in By-Pass mode and the HF-Auto
turns into an antenna switch. Probably the best I've ever had are the Ten

also had the Balun for twin lead built in as well. In my Man Cave in the

fine.

Since the tuner built in to the KPA1500 is not able to handle the full power

using if you need that kind of matching capability (i.e.: for balanced feed,

If this is happening, I'd suspect 1) the connectors have gotten wet or
2) the are JUNK connectors. If they aren't labeled "Amphenol," they're JUNK.

Rich,

Well, since the KPA100 is an option for the K2 (and not for any other
transceiver), I did not make a typo.
Since you have the K3S, the 100 watt amplifier is the KPA3.
That is why one has to be careful when specifying designations of options.

As I recall, that distorted audio on the K3S is a symptom of a failure in the
LPA on the RF Board. Contact supp...@elecraft.com to get some points to check.

What's broken?

OK, I set things back up with AFSK for RTTY instead of FSK. My results were
the same as Joe's. If I set data mode to DATA A things work as expected
whether using VOX or my usual interface for PTT. However when I switch data
mode to AFSK and VOX on and hit the TX button nothing happens, if I plug in
the FSK interface just for PTT the K3 goes into transmit but there is no
output and no tones in the monitor. My only conclusion is that there is
some logic in the K3 or the new USB interface that is not routing the audio
properly in AFSK mode. This is apparently not the case with the K3S. So Joe
there is your answer. It is not your setup it is the radio. Maybe when the
K4 is all rolled out they can take a look at the firmware and come up with a
solution. My current FSK interface is 2 transistors and 2 resistors in each
of 2 db9s connected in parallel to the db15hd pins for PTT & FSK.
This allows for SO2V operation with minimal fuss. I have never owned a
commercial interface, so have no experience with them.

In MMTTY, check on the drop down menu under OPTIONS, then at the bottom of the
list, select SETUP menu, then TX pane. Be sure the Digital Output is about
mid scale. Also, make sure the computer SPKR level is about 30 to 50% .

On the K3: From the MENU the MIC SEL should show LINE IN. The DATA MD should
be set for AFSK A and 45 BPS. The PITCH value should be 2125 - 170.The
setting for LINE gain {use the MIC control} should be about 30.

This works for my configuration when running MMTTY.

Re: [Elecraft] Center-fed antennas

2019-10-10 Thread Ed Pflueger
At W4NJA (3A) for Field Day we use three Dipoles (Cut for the low end of 80
meters) fed with 450 Ohm ladder line into a DXEngineering Balun with less
than ten feet of coax into the rig. The feed line is cut at odd multiples
and the antennas are spaced in a straight line end to end with separation of
course. We can run three stations on the same band but different modes with
no interaction. We used to use G5RV's, verticals, beams etc. but have opted
for this configuration because it works. No problem with K3's, Omni VII's
tuners to tune the bands. I have the actual length's that the three are cut
for but they are stored at another location. I actually got the information
from DXEngineering somewhere on their web pages.

Bob,

Bandpass filters at each station will help a lot, but they do not have
infinite out of band rejection.
There is still a huge benefit with single band antennas. My club uses both.

Last Field Day (3F operation) one station got on the air with a multiband
vertical, and all other operators jumped on that operator to shut him down
quickly! The multi-band antenna radiated harmonics of the radio. Even
though the transmitter met the -43 dB harmonic required by the FCC, the
proximity of the multiband antenna to other antennas caused problems (that
station was not using a bandpass filter).

So for Field Day multi-station operation, single band antennas, bandpass
filters and transmitters with low phase noise are important. We were not
able to orient the antennas end to end due to space considerations at the
EOC site, so we had to compromise on that, which makes the other factors
very important.

I need to point out that as an experiment, a 2nd station used an antenna on
20 meters separated from the main 20 meters, and we were able to operate one
on CW (K3) at the same time as the other station (Icom) used digital and SSB
modes. We had some mutual interference, but it was minimal. The K3 did not
interfere much with the Icom due to the K3's low phase noise, but the Icom
did raise the background noise level on the K3.

An upgraded K3 (synth, other) is far better than a mere 90% of an S. Where’s
the 10% as far as actual performance (not just a dB or two here and there) is
concerned?

Of course, you could (it was originally talked about but never offered as an
“official” upgrade, but you can order it as a part now) buy a K3S 4-layer RF
board, re-kit your K3 and put it in. But, honestly, the difference between the
radios is in the margin. If it had been THAT much better it would have been
the K4 and the new one would have been a K5.

I have more than a little sellers's remorse over parting with my updated K3,
but I’ll get over it … maybe this Winter. Although even that likely may not be
a better radio than a K3 with the critical updates, at least until the hybrid
“H” update is released.

My unit #6011 lacks the amp, NR module, and the KX60V. Hope to get a 160

The K2, for me, is most enjoyable to use as well.

These cables, like many cables with connectors will accrue connector oxidation.
Often the oxidation is such that it prevents a very low level signal from
passing. The solution for many instances is simply to clean connectors.

My approach is to use a Q-Tip, apply your favorite contact cleaner to the
Q-Tip, unplug one connector at a time, and scrub the male pins. Then exercise
the connector in and out of the jack or plug to wipe the female socket. Then
move on to another connector, doing the same.

And for gosh sake, NEVER NEVER spray anything into the radio, a socket or a
connector. You'll regret ever doing that for a long long time.

I hope that isn't the one I've ordered. If it is, you've got 24 hours to
get it to Kentucky. We will be at W4NJA and the CW station is my K3
upgrade, P3 and SP3.

We'll have one K4 at the Bay-Net Field Day site near San Jose this year. On
Saturday we'll be using the club call, K6SRA. On Sunday I'll be operating
from another location to be determined using my own call.

This is largely an experimental first FD effort for the K4, running early
software, etc. I'll be bringing a KX2 Li-Ion battery pack to see how long it
can power the K4 during hunt-and-pounce Field Day operation at 5 W :)
