Re: [Elecraft] Station computer OS
Hello Douglas. Take a look at page 89 of the April 2007 issue of QST. You can boot your computer into Linux using a 2 GB USB flash drive with Mandriva Linux on it. According to the article you can download the software free and put it on your own flash drive or you can buy it already on the flash drive direct from Mandriva. The download is huge...411 Mb. It won't be on your hard drive or interfere with Windows. I read about it but I haven't tried it. Take a look at the Mandriva web site. 73, Harvey KN6VP - Original Message - From: "Douglas Todd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2007 9:48 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Station computer OS I am considering changing my station computer's operating system from Windows to Linux. Currently I use Ham Radio Deluxe for station control and would like to know what Linux alternatives are available The features that I find most useful are: 1) The ability to save and recall stations. I.e., I have icons that represent various ARRL code practice frequencies, the PSK 31 bands, and other settings. 2) Setting band limits. Using Ham radio Deluxe, I am vary unlikely to set the transmitter out of band. 3) Integration with other programs, i.e. logging programs, PSK31 and Satellite tracking. I'm interested in what people are using for Linux, how robust the packages are, and what features they like most about a particular package. Thanks ! Re: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - artifact
Johnny, Here are the KDSP2 settings I am using. I'm sure they are not optimum but I am happy with the performance I get. There is quite a bit of QRM here on 80m SSB and the KDSP2 suppresses most of it so the voice is readable. nr 94 10 nt 40 07 Sn G 5.0 SF G 7.0 I don't have 80m transmit capability but I like to listen sometimes to the Canadian traffic nets. I use a little indoor vertical from MFJ and they are very strong signals here in northern Washington. I usually have the KDSP2 agressiveness set at nr2 or nr3 and the voice is usually intelligible. Sometimes the QRM is very low and I don't turn on the DSP. I suspect there are no really perfect settings since each signal being received has its own characteristics. 73, Harvey KN6VP K2 s/n 5022,5404 - Original Message - From: "Stewart Baker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Siu Johnny" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 4:30 AM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] KDSP2 - artifact Johnny, I suggest that you search the archive for threads on this subject. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Problem
Don, I checked T4 and discovered that it is a FT50-10 core instead of FT50-43. I wound the proper core and all the adjustments worked out fine. K2 S/N 5404 is running fine with over 100 watts out on all bands. I do have one more question. While working on the amp I noticed that the black coatings on the thermal pads seem to scratch easily. Mine have a couple of minor scratches that go thru the black. Does this reduce their ability to conduct heat away? Should I replace them? Thanks. Check the T4 windings again and check carefully to be certain everything is well soldered with no solder bridges. Check the diodes for proper orientation, then try again to balance the wattmeter bridge. If you do not get the trimmer capacitor correct, the power and SWR indications will be 'funny', so be certain that you have a good null (use the DVM on the test point). The capacitor setting is quite 'touchy' so adjust it very slowly waiting for your DVM to settle down with each small change. The increased voltages at D13 and U4 pin 8 are to be expected since the change of R4 to 39k - the voltages in the KPA100 unfortunately have not been updated to reflect this change. Don, I adjusted the VCO range and ended up with 0.551 vdc at 5000 kHz on the meter and I can now receive WWV at 5000 kHz. Apparently thats enough voltage to work. What I did was adjust L30 so the voltage at 4000 kHz went from 6.52 vdc to 7.35 vdc. All voltages are between 2.715 vdc and 7.350 vdc on the meter. [Elecraft] Cal PLL Problem
Hello everyone. I'm having a problem calibrating the dial on my K2. I followed the procedure by Wayne to set the master oscillator with C22 on the control board. I am able to use the signal at 10 MHz an get the readings to match up at TP1 and TP2. However when I run CAL PLL the dial is off by about .30 high. I noticed that when I hear the tone from WWV and touch the RF probe to TP3 the tone increases in frequency. After I let go of the probe the frequency remains higher. I think this is causing CAL PLL to come up with bad readings. I removed TP3 and just touched the solder pad but I still hear the increase in frequency as long as the RF probe is connected. Does anyone have an idea what might cause this problem? Thanks. Harvey KN6VPNo virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Noise Blanker Problem (Feature?)
Hi Bob. I tried switching the NB threshold and it has no effect on the NR on my K2 s/n 5022. Harvey KN6VP - Original Message - From: "Bob Patten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Elecraft Reflector" ; "Lyle Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, April 09, 2006 10:44 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Noise Blanker Problem (Feature?) Hi Gary, I finally discovered what the NB was doing on every other threshhold change. What I had perceived as a drop in level was actually the DSP Noise Reduction being turned on and off. Each time the NB is switched from low to high threshhold, the DSP NR is either turned on or off depending on its present state. I guess I should consider this a bonus, since I only have to push one key (albeit twice) for NR instead of pushing Display and Band+. Now though, I'm wondering if this behaviour is unique to my K2 or if any with both Noise Blanker and DSP installed exhibit the same? You said you didn't hear any change on yours when cycling NB threshhold, but did that K2 also have DSP installed? I'll post this to the list also - maybe someone else can verify whether this is unique to mine or common to all... -- 73, Bob Patten, N4BPPlantation, FL E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website: http://www.qsl.net/n4bp QRP ARCI #3412SOC #1ARS #799SMIRK #6625 FISTS #7871 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KSB2 P1 Wiring Questions
There is a new item from MFJ that people may find helpful when interfacing a mic to the K2. Its an MFJ-655 mic equalizer/conditioner/preamp that is supposed to interface any mic to just about any rig. It takes two types of mic connectors and the jumpering is done in the MFJ-655. You can use the standard setup with 2 pin jumper blocks in the K2 and not have to make any changes there. I don't have one but I think I will buy it soon. Read about it on the MFJ website. 73, Harvey KN6VP - Original Message - From: "Don Wilhelm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2006 7:26 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] KSB2 P1 Wiring Questions Folks, My advice on mic wiring - unless you must use the mics with multiple rigs, wire the mic configuration header for the Elecraft mics, and then change the wiring at the mic plug to match the Elecraft configuration. By doing that, it certainly simplifies things a whole lot. I see no sense in wiring your Elecraft rig to work with a Yaesu mic (for instance) since that slaves you forevermore to using the Yaesu mic wiring configuaration. IMHO, if you have only an Elecraft station, the mic plugs should be wired for the Elecraft configuration. -- If you must use the mics on multiple rigs, then yes, I can understand that you might want to use that manufacturers mic wiring on your K2 so you can connect any mic wired for that rig, but lacking that, I say, change the mic wiring to the Elecraft mic wiring and you cannot go wrong. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I've successfully completed the KSB2 module for my K2/100 through p. 16 in the manual, front panel PCB component installation. Now it's time for mic configuration, p. 17. Winding toroids, soldering multi-pin connectors and IC's, stuffing capacitors, etc.--those I don't mind. However, when it comes to mic configuration and the possibility of fouling up my K2 via an incorrectly-wired 5V line--that's when I get jittery. Here are the details: 1) Initial mic to be used: Kenwood MC-60 2) Eventual mic to be used: Radio Shack RS 33-1187 headset 3) P1 wiring method: N0SS's computer plug (thanks for the info on your website, Tom) or two-pin jumpers--both are at hand. After studying the KSB2 manual and reading postings in the Elecraft reflector archives, here are some questions: 1) Several reflector postings mention that for Kenwood settings, just use jumpers straight across for all the "Signal" and "Mic pin" connections. However, on p. 18 under Kenwood mics, there's a note: "Do not connect pin 5 unless mic has internal preamp," and another, "Leave pin 6 of the mic unconnected." I plead ignorance--does the MC-60 have an internal preamp? If it does, according to the manual I should connect signal pin 6 to mic pin 5. 2) I've read a posting that mentions leaving the bottom slide switch on the MC-60 "off." Done. Wonder if this negates the warning listed above and I should just leave signal pin 6 ("5V") unconnected? 3) The MC-60 has two impedance settings, 50K and 500--is there a preferred setting with the K2? 4) Any suggestions for wiring an 8-pin female mic plug from the RS 33-1187 that'll be compatible with Kenwood P1 settings? Finally, it's been mentioned before but for those who need it here's the Radio Shack part number for a package of ten two-pin jumpers: 276-1512. 73, John, N7ON K2/100 S/N 5023 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about the toroid guy. Yes Mike I know what you mean. I wound the coils for a T1, K1, KX1, and K2 so far but I have another K2 due to arrive this AM. My first K2(#5022) took about 2.5 months to build because I took my time. I did take my time winding the coils and I scraped the leads clean and had no trouble with the solder joints on them. I have the K2 on the air SSB and it is performing perfectly. I think I will probably go with the toroid guy for the second K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - grounding of RCVR filter Xtals
Hi Glenn. Here is the approach I used and it worked fine for me. I held each xtal in one of those extra hands devices that has several alligator clips on it. Then I put the ground wire in the other alligator clip and positioned it so the wire is on the side of the xtal then solder. I did it this way on the side of each xtal so when I put it on the board all I had to do was solder the four leads on the board and trim. The alligator clip serves as a nice little heat sink too. Instead of soldering a grounding lead to the top of the Xtal housings the manual states that the grounding wires need to be soldered to the sides of the housings. There are 2 grounding pads for each Xtal. My question is: is it absolutely imperative to use 2 grounding leads for each Xtal? [Elecraft] KNB1 Kit
Hello everyone. I just joined the group lately and have been reading some of your emails. So far I have built a T1, KX1 # 1192, K2/100 # 5022 and several of the mini kits. I'm just starting K1 #2157. Everything worked ok except the K2 SSB board. I ended up having to buy another one to get it to work right. The first board worked ok except when I selected ALC metering and/or VOX. With either/both selected my voice peaks dropped about 40-50% no matter what the set power level. I replaced 11 components on that board and it still didn't work. The new board worked fine. The factory wasn't able to figure it out either and told me that there must be something very strange about that board. I must agree. Nothing visible.
