[Elecraft] Elecraft KX2 compared with the latest "Ultra Portable"

2018-03-02 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
I have both the FT- 817nd ( since ten years) and the KX-2 ( since about
two years).
The '817 used to be an unbeatable champion in the QRP rigs class for many
years due to its versatility, all-band (160m -70cm) all mode features. It
travelled with me all accross Europe and did a great job in casual
hotel-style operation but also in a big contests' QRP category with very
good results. With a third-party DSP filter (Bhi-Dsp module) installed this
rig was and still is a very welcome in my shack, last but not least due to
its VHF/UHF full-feature coverage including sattelite operation .On the
downside , the FT'817 needs quite a lot of energy to produce its 5W and
that makes the operation from its internal battery practically useless. The
lack of a built in ATU is another minus, eventhough the Elecraft's T-1 mini
tuner comes as a great solution for this :)). Tiny display is yet another
minus.

As it comes to KX-2 it is my favourite and major rig now for all of my HF
QRP activities, incl working mobile. The first thing wich struck me,
compare to the FT817, was a KX-2 internal battery which REALY worked for
many hours uncharged! Even if in a hotel room or in the car I prefere to
run it on the battery since it much more convienient, less wiring and QRM
from the switching power supply ( only few brands of ps are almost no
noise). The power consumption both on RX and especially TX in the KX2 was
another pleasant surprise! What it takes for the FT-817 to produce 5 W is
enough or even less for KX-2 to yeald up good 10W! This comes as a great
advantage when taking part in the QRP contests, since a 10W amplifier
stands easily the heavy-duty style contest operation when run at the 5 W
level. For a casual operation when the 5W QRP is not a requirement I like
it very much to have 10-12 W in such a compact box. I also like the large
display and great functionality in KX-2 , like built in messages for CW and
even SSB. The message feature makes it much more fun when operating mobile
or in the contest ( especially voice messaging , since I hate shouting cq
for hours :)). The DSP filtering makes the receiver's general performing
far better to my opinion then the FT-817 especially in a crowdy
environment like FD or a contest. Being a programmable SDR rig, the KX-2 is
easily upgradable ( and I like it very much!) for more and better features
which is out of question for an old ( good!) analogue FT-817. The only
thing which the KX-2 lacks on HF is a 160 m band ( and I don't understand
why). As it comes for the VHF/UHF I don't miss it in the KX-2 since it
would be rearly used by the HF hams anyway and it would result in the
bigger size and the price of the rig. There is a KX-3 for that, :) and I
personally still have the FT-817 packed carefully in case I feel a desire
to grab my VHF yagies and rush to a VHF field day, :)).

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 echo in the speaker

Touching is like you take the radio in to your hands, put it upside down on
the table, removing the back pannel, or just like pushing buttons on the
radio, or like taking a pen and slightly bumping on the chassis. I have
tried to turn the mic's gain down to 0, but it didn't help.

[Elecraft] KX2 echo in the speaker

2018-02-25 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Hello group,

I have a bizzair effect in my KX2. When I touch the chassis of the radio
each touch corresponds with the echo in the speaker. The radio is not
connected to the antenna, could run on the battery or the PS, the effect is
there. Touching also makes the Smeter bar move a bit.
Does anybody has/had the same issue and know the solution?

Thanks , Linas LY2H

[Elecraft] kx2 speaker

John,
I am an owner of kx2 for a few years. I am amazed by the quality of the kx2
speaker. For such a tiny radio with so little space for a speaker , it is a
very well designed construction of the back cover of the radio and the
speaker itself!

[Elecraft] KX2 heatsink

2017-06-18 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Hello folks,
I am looking for the practical , empyrical, real info based on the
individual measurements of the maximum Key-down time/temperature at the 10w
output of the KX2 before it drops down to 5 W issuing a message of "HI
TEMP". I would also like to learn about comparison of the KX2 stock
heatsink vs the Pro-audio Engineering KX22 product.

The reason is that I have decided to install the KX22 on my KX2 ( # 148*)
after a short dx-pedition to Aland islands in May. I was handling quite a
pile-up from the hotel room and after some 5 min of intensive CQ-ing and
answering on CW the PA temperature gone up to 59-60C degrees and the power
dropped down to 5 W and it was frustrating :)
Today I have installed the PAE KX22 heatsink. The key-down at 10 W into a
dummy load in CW mode lasted for around 3 minutes starting from the ambient
temp. 27C. I don't think this is very impressive baring in mind the
Pro-audio's claim of the 250% key-down time improvement. Unfortunately, I
was not so smart to test the key-down time with the stock heatsink before I
changed it to the new one, :) But I remember Wayne was posting here in the
previous thread something abt 7 min of key-down at 10W... So, with the 250%
improvement with the KX22 it should last... for some 24 min?! in my case,
It doesn't sound very realistic , neither 7 min with the stock heatsink,
nor 24 min with the Pro-Audio ( maybe ,bad thermal contact, not enough of
grease?). That's why it would be very interesting to compare the real-life
empyrical data of the other KX2 owners.

[Elecraft] Good length off the antenna

2017-05-09 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Hello,
8,8m could be a good length for your pole to tune from 40-6 m. It is
important to avoid the half wave lengths and its harmonics on the operating
frequency because it will produce a very high ( kiloohms) impedance which
normal tuner won't tune. Unless you go onpurpously for a 1/2 lambda
monoband antenna. It is very effective , needs a very short counterpoise
but you need to have special tuner, even the simpliest one made of a coil
and a variable cap. If you want multiband with a internal tuner, the
mentioned length is ok for all bands. There is many I more good lengths ,
you may google it on the net. I use 8,8m + 8,8m of couterpoise on the
ground with my KX2 tuner for the outings and I have a 43m end fed wire for
a fixed 160-6 m operation at home with multiple quarter wave radials on
the roof.

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 firmware with 4 programmable functions and home/field ATU settings

2017-04-16 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Thanks Wayne!
Pf1-Pf4 in the rev.2.75 works just great and makes my mobile operations so
much easier! I have assigned Pf1 to VOX, Pf2 to XIT, Pf3 to BKLIGHT, Pf4 to
DUAL RX ( that's more for fixed rather than mobile use).
I have yet to discover the sense of having two ATU Data Sets. Theoretically
it lets you to skip the tuning procedure each time you swap the known
antennas. But practically what matters is how many buttons you need to push
to get the antenna tuned. So, with two ATU sets you have to push at least 3
buttons ( go to menu, choose the set, go back to general display) in order
to get the antenna right. But for ordinary tuning procedure you only need
to push the ATU button once and the antenna ( any antenna) gets tuned in a
second! :) . And last but not least, even the same antenna may need
different tuning depending on the physical condition like snow, rain etc.

Anyway, thanks for a quick reactions to the elecrafters community ideas!
Happy Easter everybody!

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2 firmware with 4 programmable functions; need testers

2017-04-09 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Good news and thanks!
Looking fwd for this great improvement to be download-redy for the rest of
us.
I am a new (up to 2 months) KX2 user so the first things I found myself
missing is more Pfn buttons, at least 2. Now there going to be 4 of them!
So my first set would be PF1 =VOX, PF2= XIT, PF3=BKLIGHT, PF4=PS. Using the
radio car mobile a lot I already use the existing Pfn for the VOX in CW
mode, and the XIT is the second mostly needed. I will finaly decide on the
last two after some more time of variety usage.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Matching Power Amplifier

2017-04-06 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
No it doesn't, at least for the engineers who created this little tuner.
Please check the Elecraft T-1 FAQ, :)

*Q: What’s the highest power level the T1 can handle? Can I use my 30-40
watt amplifier?*

*A:* The T1 is rated at 20 W SSB/CW and 10 W FM/AM/digital modes. However,
to ensure that the design is rugged, we did stress-testing at 100 watts
(very briefly–don’t do this on purpose). Things got very warm during these
tests, but no damage occurred. We also used the T1 for an extended period
in SSB and CW modes at 40 watts to simulate the emergency use of
backpacking amplifiers. Again, this did not damage the tuner. But just to
be safe, we’re sticking with our 20 W rating."

It would be a good idea if the KX2 could be modified in order to get the
Band Data signal from the ACC socket, for as it is now it only provides
with the Key Out signal. I don't know though how the Band info is
arranged in the Kx2/KXPA100 combo, may be some RF sensor?

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Matching Power Amplifier

2017-04-06 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Nice idea! Before Elecraft steps-in to this PA market, I am using with
great success and pleasure the Chinese MiNiPa50,:)
AT 5-6 W in from the Kx2 it yealds clean and healthy 45-50 W output on the
80-20m bands and around 40W on higher bands. 6,6A current consumption at
13-14V. No 6 m , no ATU though. ( For the ATU I use the famous Elecrat T-1,
yes, it can stand up to 40 W , just do not tune at this power level, :)) At
the price of approx 150 USD it is very good value for money, I think.

George,
100% supportt! I've been thinking even to swap the KX2 knob with the
lovely-rubber-coated knob of the FT-817ND! Not sure yet if it is possible
at all, :). Surely, anything original from Elecraft would be of no
hesitations!

Re: [Elecraft] Future KX3/KX2 accessories?

2017-03-30 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
1. I support very mich the idea or the need , really, of an in-built
bluetooth rig control and audio I/o connection interface to a portable
devices. For if you have an iPad or an iPhone you can not connect them to
nothing and nothing can be connected to them by wires :). Yes, I have a
Pigtail thing but it's too complicated to use in the field and it makes one
more box hanging around and the software available is rudimentary one. With
mobile devices taking over laptop and desktop computers almost massively in
the daily life use, not having a chance to use it for the KX line ham radio
applications is just a great mistake!

2. I use my KX2 a lot in the mobile operating with the magmount antenna.
The rig just sits on the front seat near me and it is no problem to operate
the CW paddle. Just one thing - it would be nice a second PF button because
now I have to choose what I want to use it for- the VOX on/off or the Xit
on/off for example. While on road and driving it is tiresome and dangerous
to mingle with the menu settings. Actually the VOX setting should stay
always on if you switch it on. at the moment you have to switch it on on
every power-up.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 ATU question

2017-03-27 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Dave,
Pretty much the same to my experience. I have the T-1 for some 10 years
and the KX-2 with the ATU installed for some 1 month, :). May be too early
to make judgements but both tuners were equally good in tuning the random
wire of some 9 m, also a 12m length vertical dipole fed by the 400 ohm open
air line through the current balun. Both managed to tune it from 40 to 10
meters except of 80. The tuner of my K3 made it also into 80m ( almost no
practical use but still the K3 tuner proved to be very capable, :). Except
the extreme situations like this or the 1/2 wavelenght antennas the both
small tuners doing extremely well. I would higly recommend the ATU option
for the Kx2 since this is a very protable rig and the ATU is a must in
situations like hotel rooms etc. At the moment I am using it every day with
greate success in my mobile setup tuning the base-load mobile whip ( 1.25 m
lenght) made of a junk-box loading coil and the whip stolen from the VHF
5/8 antenna. During every 20min trip to work and back I make 1-3 QSO's
incl even some stns from USA, Canada, Asian Russia and EU islands like
Crete. I am very much content with this in-built tuner!

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 on N1MM+

2017-03-23 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Chris,
Thanks a lot for your advice and the link to a great K4MTX site! Problem
solved now! Understanding the principals of this scrip writing I can create
my own macros as I want them to, the CW comes smoothly to the KX2 and is
transmitted to the air provided the VOX button is on. The only change- the
ESC button doesn't work any more for stopping the TX but the F11 takes the
job over!

I recommend this method to all KX2 owners, thanks to this very
knowledgable Elecrafters community!

[Elecraft] KX2 on N1MM+

2017-03-22 Thread Irma & Linas(LY2H)
Hello group,

Is it correct that KX2 does not support the CW/PTT operation through the
DTR/RTS ports? I have tried it out on the N1MM+ logger with no success. It
does control the VFO, the band/mode change but no sending CW from the
logger nor switchin PTT. My K3 which has the menu item for the DTR/RTS
configuration is doing it all perfectly under the same logger
configuration.
Is there any other way to get CW/PTT control on KX2 from the N1MM+ logger?
Thanks for the inputs!

I wouldn't sugest connecting anything to it.

Shouldn't be a problem on this PS too.
