[Elecraft] Old topic RE: CM500
I have two Yamaha CM500 headsets that I really like. However, both are suffering from the ear pad deterioration problem. A long time back I saw several postings suggesting replacement ear pads AND the foam inside cover. Naturally now I can't find them. I would like to rebuild at least one of them via the 'goop' (glue) method. Any recommendations for both the ear pad AND the foam inside cover? Thanks, Jim Leder ... [Elecraft] KIO3B upgrade
I have an older K3 and have been using a USB Signalink for digital. The audio levels are easy to control with the TX and RX pots on the Signalink. With the KIO3B installed, putting the soundcard inside the K3, how are those levels controlled? I ordered the upgrade kit, but need to know about this before finishing it up. The Signalink has been easy to control and very reliable. Will the KIO3B upgrade be as easy to operate? [Elecraft] K3 problem
This is a follow up on the VFO B control problem with a friend’s older K3. Thanks to all the ideas and suggestions! I do agree that it is likely the infamous K3 connector problem. As I mentioned, the K3 is an older unit. The ham who it belongs to is 78 with bad eyes, and shaky hands. I’m 74 with bad eyes and shaky hands. Neither of us feels qualified to tear into it for what hopefully is the main issue. It could still be a bad encoder. Since he needs a few other things done with the unit, he made the decision to send it back to Elecraft and have qualified techs perform the repair. Painful and costly but necessary. When we did the hard reset, we hoped it would solve the B control problem. Well, it didn’t. Now we can’t even scroll through the CONFIG menus to put everything back as he had it. Doesn’t matter. It needs to go home. Thanks again for the valued suggestions!! 73 … Jim Leder … K8CXM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 problem
Just got back from visiting a friend who has an older K3. After fussing around with RS232 cables, we finally got the firmware updated, it was quite old. But, BEFORE we did the update we knew we had the problem (reason we did the update). So, the update had no bearing on what is wrong Problem is the VFO B knob has NO effect on anything. He can’t run split by using it even though he is able to do A>B ok. To change the B frequency, he needs to do A/B , change it, then A/B back again. Doing the split will allow it to transmit what’s in B, he just can’t change it with the VFO B control. Related to this is the inability to enter the config menu and scroll through the options. Net is the VFO B control does nothing. I suspect something to do with the alternate VFO encoder or one of it’s connections. Opinions? Seems to me a visit back to the mothership. Thanks. [Elecraft] Suggestions
I have a KX3 and do mostly CW on the road with it. I have the KXPD3 paddle. I also had the intermittent keying operation with dits and dahs and did the mod to add the small wires to correct it. For the most part, that did fix it. However, recently I’ve noticed that the dah side gets screwy now and then, dit side seems ok. During FD, I had made about 90 contacts, and other then my operator errors, the paddle worked perfectly. I got up to get a drink, hit the head and came back for more operating. The KXPD3 immediately started acting up with incomplete dahs, dit side was just fine. NO one touched it and it only sat idle for 10 minutes or so. I was forced to break out the Bencher BY1 and was able to net another 30 contacts before hanging it up. Bencher worked fine (except for me on occasion). I like the paddle, and really don’t want to drag the much bigger and heavier Bencher around with me on the portable operations. I am at a loss to understand why it could do so well for so long, and then get weird. Any suggestions or ideas? Elecraft? Anyone? Thanks Don, and others. I guessed I missed the addition of the feature. I know that a few of us were hoping for this feature a year or so ago and I confess I have not paid much attention to the newest SVGA changes since I don’t have one. Originally, it wasn’t supported. To sum it up then IF decode is enabled on the K3, and my P3 has the SVGA adapter installed, the decoded text from CW/PSK/RTTY will be displayed on the SVGA device, but NOT on the P3. Do I have it right? Can it be displayed on the P3 ala PX3? When did this feature appear? 73 ... Jim Leder ... From: Jim Leder Sent: Monday, May 25, 2015 2:00 PM To: km...@km6cq.com ; Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] Cooler KX Plus Heatsink Install I had the exact same experience with the longer screw being slightly off center. And, since I did not do the build on mine, I was unaware of the sticky tape holding the old heat sink to the case. Finally figured it out after reviewing the build directions, and then pushed on one end, fairly hard, till it popped off. Sailed half way across the room! But, all was fine and I completed the heat sink replacement. Fred later advised to use a heat gun, or hair dryer on the outside of the old heat sink to soften the sticky tape so that it would come off easier. Very satisfied with the VE7FMN heat sink and Fred's support and advice! Very nice upgrade! [Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes
I finally upgraded my little KX1 to a new KX3. LOVE the KX3! Intent is to use it mainly when I travel, but also as a nice QRP addition to the shack. My K3/KPA500 combo is still my main shack rig. One of the things I want to try is using the KX3 with is low power digital modes, like WSPR and maybe JT65. I have been trying to hook things up to my radio laptop and so far, I have managed to get half way: JT65 decodes signals perfectly, so that side is working OK. The problem is when I plug the transmit side into the KX3 and the laptop output (speakers), the KX3 immediately flips into TX mode (little red light comes on). No RF is being sent, there are NO tones being generated from the laptop. It's like PTT is activated. Doesn't matter if JT65 is running or not, the plug goes into the laptop and the TX light goes on. I am using the supplied 'green' cable from the KX3 cable packet. It is a stereo cable. The radio is set to VOX on. If either cable end is removed, the TX light goes o ut. What have I missed? BTW, same results with two different laptops. Thanks! [Elecraft] K3 power set
I switch between low power with JT65/JT9 and regular use with my KPA500 for CW. I set up a JT65 macro to switch antennas and change my power down to 20 watts as well as put the K3 into DATA mode. I have a second macro to switch back to regular CW mode, other the antenna and 100 watts. I also have the PWR SET to PER-BAND so as not to overdrive my KPA500 (typically it needs 20-25 watts). The PWR SET has two sets of PER-BAND power levels, one for barefoot level (100 watts in my case) and one for the KPA500 (20-25 watts). Works perfect (yes, I am using the cable between the K3 and KPA500), except when switching back from JT65/JT9 mode. BOTH power levels on that particular band get reset to 100 watts. More than once I panicked when I had red lights and the OVERDRIVE message. But, thank you Elecraft for building very good protection into the KPA500, so no ill effects other than my heart rate raising too quickly. The easy solution is to set power control on switching back to CW mode to a much lower power, say 20 watts. And I have done that. But my question is: is there another way to do what I am doing without resetting the 2 per-band power levels? Thanks.. Jim Leder ... [Elecraft] SVGA and K3
Hello Elecraft, I know others have asked the same question, but I am going to ask it again. First, I am a dedicated Elecraft user with a K3, P3, KPA500 and a KX1. My K3 is pretty well loaded up, and I tell everyone that is the finest ham radio gear I have used in 50+ years of hamming. The question: Will we ever see the ability of the K3/P3 SVGA to do the decode of PSK/FSK only to the P3 SVGA, and leave the K3 in normal frequency display mode on VFO B? I do not have an SVGA adapter in my P3, with the small amount of RTTY/PSK I do, it’s not practical. But, this could change. I am totally happy using the P3 as is. If the decoded text could be directed to the SVGA adapter while leaving the K3 VFO B alone, I’d buy one today. I am hoping this is somewhere on the ‘to do’ list, like PSK63 was. Is it? Any timeframe if it is? I am looking for an excuse to get the SVGA adapter. Don’t tell my XYL. Jim Leder ... [Elecraft] KX1 and Anker LION battery
I use an Elecraft KX1 and an Anker Astro Pro2 LION battery when I go QRP in the field. The combination works very well, and allows me to run the KX1 at the full 3 watt level. However, the last two times I used this arrangement, I had the Anker battery shut down on me. It would power right back up, but , still, it was disconcerting. After finally reading about the battery and doing some in house testing, I finally figured out that the KX1 draws such little current while idling (good thing), that it fooled the battery enough that the Anker's auto shut off (also a good thing, if you are actually charging a device) kicked in. I didn't want this, so I started toying with the KX1 to see if I could make it draw enough current while idling. What I finally ended up doing was turning on the small LED light and leaving it on while operating. So far, the battery has been staying on. Not an elegant solution, but SEEMS to work. Anyone have a better idea on how to defeat the auto shutoff of this battery? I have not yet queried Anker about this, but that's next. But, as I mentioned up front, this combination works very well and I am very pleased with the results. [Elecraft] HC5 element change
Some years back, someone gave me an older Heil Proset with the HC5 element. It needed some serious maintenance, but after exchanging the cable and adding new earmuffs, it's now up to par. I also have a newer Proset that has the HC4 element. This is the one I have been using. Both can be connected to my K3 on the front via the AD1K cable. I prefer the front over the back of the K3 connections. Since I have two Prosets, I am thinking of changing the HC5 element in the older Proset with a W2ENY replacement element. Inexpensive way to 'upgrade' the Proset, since the HC6, as far as I know, isn't available on it's own. Has anyone made this 'upgrade'? Should it work as advertised in my case? Anything I should look out for? BTW, I looked at the CM500, and while it appears to be a nice boom headset, I don't need another headset hanging in my closet. Happy Holidays from frozen Ohio!!! 73 .. [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY
I am trying to decide if I should invest in an SVGA card for my P3. I know about all the nice features that the SVGA card will give me, but I have been told by a top contester that the K3 decoder is not as good as MMTTY. I like on occasion to do FSK/D, and have been using the built in function of the K3 with fair success. With my old, displaced Pro 3, I used MMTTY/EXTFSK and a Green Heron Radio Boss with very good results. I still have the Radio Boss, and see that it would be easy to implement with my K3. So, the only question I have is does anyone have an unbiased opinion on which offers better results in the decode of FSK/D? Certainly, I can do the Radio Boss option for less than $50, since I have the unit. The SVGA would run me around $300 (I would need another monitor). I am not a heavy user of RTTY or PSK, but on occasion use those modes. I am leaning to the less expensive Radio Boss option, or just continue with the K3/terminal program readout. So, again which is a better RTTY decoder: MMTTY or the built in K3 decoder? Or, are the pretty much the same? [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY
But, I do not have a P3 SVGA card. I know how well MMTTY/EXTFSK works. I've used it. The question is: is the native K3 FSK/D decoder as good or better than MMTTY? Before I charge off and drop $300 on the SVGA card and monitor, to use mainly for RTTY, is it worth it? I am content with the P3, and don't really need a large monitor showing me the same thing. Short on table space anyway. Has anyone out there with both, used/compared them? Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY
Yes, that is the answer I was wondering about. I have had other K3 owners pretty much tell me the same thing, but thought to ask the group. As Iain suggested, I could compare both decoders without the SVGA card, and probably will (sorry, Iain, I misunderstood your reply). But, I am leaning towards using the external TTL box. My input is if you are buying the SVGA card just for digital modes like FSK/D etc then don’t buy it. Any software package like MMTTY is better than using the K3, P3/SVGA. I really like having the SVGA and the large display and I have tried using it for digital modes but always go back to computer and digital software. Its lot easier to use, better copy, decrypts, lots more features, etc. SVGA card is great for lots of other reasons though. 73 Hope this helps. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY
Yes, I realize that I do not need the SVGA card to compare them. Wasn't thinking it through. I first looked at the W3YY board, but remembered I had the other unit somewhere around here, did a search and found it. With a DB15 Y (I also have the PR6) cable and a 15 pin shell, I can easily construct the necessary cable to connect the 'Radio Boss' to the K3. Thanks for the advice! Case closed, I'm going this way. 73 ... [Elecraft] Macros
Had a situation this morning where my two macros started giving me goofy responses, and eventually would lock up my K3. The K3 still worked OK, and all was cleared up with a power off/on. I couldn't get the macros to work consistently, no matter what I tried, including the 'soft' reset'. So, I reloaded my firmware (4.60) and this apparently corrected the failure. I had been toying with several different macros and wonder if my playing around somehow fouled things up. I only have 2 macros: PF1 HOLD to put the rig into CW and PF2 HOLD to put the rig into FSK. These are simple macros (thanks K1HTV) and have been working without a hitch, until I attempted to get fancy. My questions are: Is it possible to fill up the macro memory slots, even when they appear empty? Is there a way to clear/reset ALL the macros without reloading the firmware? (this seemed to fix my problem) Additional curiosity: I was getting an FT0 on the terminal screen over and over of the utility program when things were fouled/locked up. Radio was NOT in split. I do not have the SR. The radio and macros are now working as they should, but somehow I am sure I messed it up somehow. Any ideas? Thanks... Re: [Elecraft] Macros
I spent a few hours trying to understand what I am seeing, and it is a case where the assigned macros are not being remembered to their assigned PF keys. They work the first time, but after the second PF key gets depressed (FSK) only the SECOND one is retained in BOTH PF1 and PF. The first macro is not assigned to PF1 hold anymore, the SECOND macro is assigned to BOTH PF1 and PF2 hold. In this case, since I have FSK as second, it's the one that is in play on BOTH PF keys. I reversed them and got CW to be dominant. The macros work perfect from the utility program, just as I want them to. I did do a read to the utility program, and the macros are in the EPROM as they were written. Only thing left is the macro assign function is being somehow corrupted/changed. Recently I had my K3 back to Elecraft for an FPF board replacement. I sure hope it's not that again. I sure hope you guys have an idea. I am out of them. BTW, without the MN255, the display stays in menu mode. MN255 brings is back to a normal operating display. Re: [Elecraft] Macros
Don , I owe you. I've been smacking my head since you suggested it. I removed the 2 switch parameters, and now it works as it should. Interesting, I have seen many examples that do this sort of thing, and they all have the switch parameter imbedded in them. They also do the assign to PF1/PF2. This macro did once work. I can't say why, but it did. Guess it doesn't matter now. I don't do many macros, but I like to learn new things and really try to exploit the great features on this wonderful piece of gear. Any ideas? Thanks... [Elecraft] K3 macro help
I am trying to write 2 simple macros and assign them to PF1 and PF2. The macros are for changing mode to DATA A and toggeling MIC+LIN on for PF1, and then returning to CW on PF2 and toggeling MIC+LIN off. They look like this: MD6;DT0;MN015;UP;SWH45;MN255 /* assigned to pf1 hold */ MN015;UP;SWH47;MN255;MD3 /* assigned to pf2 hold */ Any old PL/1 programmers may recognized the /* and */ as comment fields. Anyway, these two macros work perfect from the K3 utility. They also work OK direct in the radio, BUT ONLY THE FIRST TIME. After that, unless I reassign them after a reload, they give me a MIC+LIN N/A in CW mode. It's like MD6 isn't being done, after the first execution (and, it's not). What I don't get, is it works the FIRST time, but subsequent PF1H and PF2H give me the error. I got to believe I am missing something, but not sure what it is. Any ideas? Thanks ...
