Yaw!
I have been working with SMD -components. Marking; 3k3 is A 3300 ohm
(3.3 kOhm) resistor 3.3.ohm resistor is marked 3R3. As I have been
working as A radio- TV mechanics I sometimes was targeted with A joke.
"Put an extra component loose somewhwere in an equipment and cause a
nerval breakdown". Maybe not in this case.

100?F is well within the survivable body core temperature range, so it
should never trigger pain receptors.

In fact, I believe it was defined based on the nominal core body
temperature of a cow.

Did you mean 100?C?

seems that the K3 refuses of any output, RX normal. Hopefully the cause

2020-06-18 Thread Pentti A J Pajunen

Yaw!

Dont recall when this malfunction started. I once asked for possible
causes and got a couple of good suggestions. The flat cable btwn Proc
and RF board should be checked. Ohm meter checked and found this cable
being intact. Gave slight spray to the base connectors, that also seem
OK as checked with magnifying googles. No bent pins, no obvious
oxidation. Bad button? Which point to check?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 180, Issue 16

2019-04-15 Thread Pentti A J Pajunen

Hello Doug et all

The CE -marking is not "A REAL" approval, it's just A manufacturers
claim of the product fullfilling the reqired standards. UL listing on
it's behalf is an approval that's granted for the manufacturer after
testing and inspection. The applicant must send all of the drawings,
BOM, some required samples to UL. The UL inspector then regulary
visits the manufacturer (an audit) to make sure that the approved
product is as figured in the application of the approval... I worked as
an UL representative years ago in FIMKO (Elecrical inspectorate of
Finland) . So, don't worry about missing CE on the labels. In Finland
some humorists call CE -marking as an abbreviation for "China Export" :-D.

that the real fact goes 2far OFF-TOPIC! To unveil, I have caught myself
undeliberately pressed the antenna selector swith, being too lazy to
read the display. Fortunatelly I havent (yet) dismantled any of my gear

it is not a sliding contact as you would find in a BNC or an N connector. The pressure

I ask you - just how much resistance can be expected if you just touch two ends
of wires together without further positive contact?

The "insulating spacer" is any oxidation on either the SO239 or the PL259.
That is why I like silver plated UHF connectors. They may look a bit corroded, but the
silver oxide is conductive even though it can appear brown or black. If you are shopping
for UHF connectors at hamfests, avoid all those nickel-plated ones that a not Amphenol,
but flock to those that are oxidized, and silver plated with Mil Spec designations on
them.

In the connectors that you are mating how do you prevent contact between the
end face of the PL259 body and the end face of the SO239 body? You would need
an insulating spacer for your statement to be true.

This is one of those, "it depends" situations.? Depending on the location of the
two center conductor insulators in the plug and socket, the serrated (toothed)

It sounds to me like the makerspace idea is pretty cool. I may have to join
one here in Bozeman cause project space (and projects) are seriously limited in
the new digs.

Googling makerspace for Denver looks like there are number of places. Maybe
some would be better than others for your grandson.

Might be a good idea on 40m but I don't have a mobile antenna for that band.

Looking for suggestion about books or kits or whatever else that might interest
a ten year old to electronics and to amateur radio. He is adept at mechanical
things and pretty bright. What else could he be? He?s my grandson.

But his understanding of electronics is well insulated by contemporary smart
phones and games and the like, about the innards of which one can learn nothing
in the old way ? the way we did it, by taking the family radio apart and then
having to learn how to put it back together.

Any other grandpas or grandmas out there have experiences to share?

Thanks in advance,

YAW!
About the "Windom" -antenna. I have used this type of an antenna fed
with many kinds of twin-lead and A tuner. At sixties it was known as
W0WO -antenna. Working pretty well, I recommend.

Yes, Don. Consider also that this behavior is only for the ATU menu as all
the others menu setting are correctly stored.

I've a problem using my K2/100 with KAT100: every time I switch off K2 the
ATU menu selection is not stored and switching on again the ATU selection is
always on CAL, so I've to change it to AUTO in order to use KAT100.

This is a very annoying situation: any suggestion?

Thank you in advance

If you are exiting the menu correctly, then the problem is likely with a
memory location in the EEPROM IC U7 on the control board.
If you replace U7, you will have to do a Master Reset followed by CAL
PLL and CAL FIL as well as re-entering all the other menu items.
Download the K2 A to B instructions because that contains a chart to
guide you in recording the menu entries.

Hello Don,
thank you for your suggestion, but before desoldering U7 (not easy) and
changing it I'd like to be sure that the problem is the EEPROM. It seem a
little odd to me that this problem come only with the ATU setting and it's not
so usual that a single EEPROM address is damaged. Another strange behavior is
that pressing MENU after switching on the radio I have on the display always
the first menu element (ST L) and not the last one I accessed before to switch
off the radio.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Ya OTs & other CW improvers. No absolute truth in learnig the Morse
(rather Veil) code.

1. Rag chewing with highest speed you can read in your head
2. Take a buzzer (may be your rig monitoring, not transmitting), some
journal and start sending the code as fast U can

Sending the code is as good as anything else "schooling" Ur brain.
K-radios have exellent keyers and sending monitors for practising.

I love HAM radio and Competition dancing (with my XYL). The more I can
practise the more I can reach in CW and the more I can "see" as an
adjudicator in dancing competitions. Both hobbies are the best U can do
fully clothed - in publick.

Jim
I'll endorse your experience with the installation PAE's excellent heatsink for
the KX2.
I jumped into that operation with a Swiss Army knife and a set of forceps at
the hotel while at Dayton hamvention.
Holding on the two washers, nut and bolt simultaneously in a confined space is playing
"Twister" with your fingers!
That said, I love the kit - combined with the Lexan cover, the kit is both
functional and attractive.
Fun to get an installation challenge from time to time!!

Surely some of the astute among you _know_ The Perfect Method, and I hope

To complete the OT-ness of this msg, I recently completed the QRP Labs
Ultimate WSPR/QRSS kit and re-learned the joys of soldering iron burns,
again. Certainly nothing wrong with Hans' excellent kits, and the price is
amazing for the functionality, design, and quality.

Then I installed the PAE heat sink end panels on my KX2. The latter is not
for the faint of heart! I STRONGLY recommend the somewhat buried hint in
PAE's instructions to remove the AT board before attaching the PA
transistors to the heat sink. Tried it the other way and re-discovered that
my micromanipulation skills are right up there with my CW -- maybe better,
which is damned depressing.

So, any help mastering Morse?

Thanks in advance and 73,

More on linear thoughts. Well, the difference between .5 & 1.5k is
noticeable on an EMPTY band. In real life pileups are really different.
Timing makes the difference, sometimes lil offset in CW?

[Elecraft] Funny audio output in kx3

2016-05-16 Thread Pentti A J Pajunen

Hi'ya all!

Have any of You bumped with a phenomenon of KX3's audio output when
using headphones or xternal speaker with amplifier (TBA 820), sounding
like ghost-like space sound. This phenomenon doesn't xist when my rigs
own internal speaker is in use. The funny sound gives me an expression
of leak of sampling glitches from the processor. Is there some kind of
possibility of bad or broken grounding inside the rig. Unsuitable input
impedance of the external spkr amp, or bad headphones?

My K3 once sounded alike, but was healed by upgrading the software.

Any ideas for fixing?
