[Elecraft] Buying a K4 in UK
In the past I have bought Elecraft transceivers and amplifiers both direct from USA and also through W with full satisfaction. On the one occasion in the last 14 years, when one of my Elecrafts (a KPA500) needed a repair, I had to send it to Italy, a not inexpensive solution. Sadly, it now appears that W and Nevada are no longer independent and have now amalgamated under Moonraker, not that I have a problem with Moonraker. To continue with a UK Elecraft agency, Moonraker/W/Nevada should recruit and set up a service centre which would alleviate the perceived problem plus it would provide an alternative service for other makes. The worst of all possible worlds IMHO, would be for the UK Elecraft agency to end up with so many other radio products in the Staines emporium. Sadly, ...they already have more than enough exclusives thus reducing any competitive pricing for us, the UK amateur. [Elecraft] Muting the K2
I am thinking of building a low power QRP valve transmitter (e.g. 1 or perhaps 2 6V6's/6L6's) for use in the G-QRP club valve activation weekends - output 5 to 10W. Many of such circuits are using a crystal oscillator, but I plan to build a Nano digital VFO in place of the crystal to have more frequency flexibility. If I use my K2 as the receiver, will it be sufficient when transmitting, to switch the antenna to the transmitter and ground the K2 antenna port to avoid damage to the K2? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K4 Panadaptor Display
As the originator of this thread I would like to comment on the answers received so far. There have been suggestions that: 1. You can’t do it, except by using a quadrant monitor which can accept say 4 inputs! 2. You can achieve a similar result by using the N1MM Spectrum Display! 3. You can do it with a bit of easily available splitter hardware! 4. You can achieve a similar result by using an SDR display with your K4! 5. You can maybe do it by using some additional software – possibly the K4RV remote software currently in development? It seems to me that it would be a really good idea if Wayne or someone else from Elecraft could please clarify the situation and possibilities? For completeness, my original question was: I wonder if it is possible to show the K4 panadaptor(s) display as a separate floating window on the external monitor? So that for example you could have your logging program windows open as well as a separately floating K4 panadaptor display showing on the same monitor. 73 Ray G3XLG 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K4 Panadaptor Display
Thanks for the quick answer Grant (& also Ed W0YK). That is more than a little disappointing as it means that as a contester for example, you either have to have two or more displays (ie. One for a logging program & one for the K4 display) or buy a much more expensive display which enables you to have separate quadrants for separate programs? This seems a rather retrograde step compared to most other current transceivers or have I misunderstood? I suppose you could use the touch screen display as an alternative but why not output the K4 display to your PC and then put both outputs onto a single screen? 73 Ray G3XLG Sent from Mail for Windows 10 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KPA1500 in IARU Contest last Weekend
Lots of ideas there but I agree it is most likely a heat issue, that's why I quoted the max temp I saw in the KPA1500(70C). The 2-El yagi antenna is an EAntenna (Spanish design but now part of Wimo in Germany). I wanted to get the 40M Optibeam Moxon but it was not available for some months & being a bit impatient I bought this one. I now have the Optibeam on order as I have had previous good experience with that Company. Anyway it has a 5.6 metre boom with air spaced loading coils on the reflector & director. It also has a ferrite choke balun just before the hairpin match on the driven element. I'm confident that the coax and connectors are good. Which means it was most likely either the balun or the loading coils I guess. I never thought there was a problem on the Amp but I just wondered what else it might be. 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KPA1500 in the IARU Contest Last weekend
A correspondent asked me why I needed to tune a resonant antenna. The reason was because although the Yagi was tuned to resonate at about 7.130MHz it unfortunately has a rather narrow bandwidth. I needed to operate SSB in this contest in ITU Region 1 SSB, which is between 7.080MHz and 7.200MHZ. At 7.080MHz the SWR (with tuner bypassed) was 1.75:1 & at 7.200 was 1.95:1. I would be operating at power so I preferred to tune for 1.1:1. Yes I know the Yagi is not very good with that narrow bandwidth, but it is what it is. Normally I operate CW only on 40M & tune it to 7.030 with the bandwidth covering the preferred Region 1 CW portion of the band ie7.000 to 7.040 and the tuner is not needed. 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KPA1500 in the IARU Contest Last Weekend
Hi I was a member of the UK HQ team for this 24hour IARU event last weekend and was one of the two Ops on 40M SSB. We took it in turns to be the Run station every 4 hours and I was using a 40M 2-El yagi at 60ft. I noticed that every 30-60mins, I needed to do a re-tune on the KPA1500 to keep the SWR at or near to 1.1:1, as it seemed to gradually creep up over time. The amp temp peaked at 70C but was mostly at about 55C. The SWR never got above 1.5:1 using KPA1500 screen but I know that the yagi was really presenting about 1.6:1 at the run frequency. When not operating as the Run station the other Op was in Partner mode spotting mults & helping with call identification. We were using the WinTest logging program as this enables us to private network with the other UK HQ stations (one on CW & one on SSB for each contest band ie. a total 12 stations at any one time, plus Partners). Because of Covid, this year we were all single Ops working from home rather than just a few multi op stations. My K3S & the KPA1500 worked faultlessly for the 24hours as did Wintest but I wonder what was the cause of the SWR increasing over time & needing a re-tune? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I downloaded the latest Utility & also downloaded the newest firmware files to the laptop & then attempted to connect with the K3S using the USB connection. It would not connect, but according to Device Manager the FTDI chip in the USB cable was working OK on COM3 but still no connection was made to the K3S. I then attempted to Force a Firmware Download as per the K3S Owner's Manual. I unplugged the radio, waited 5 seconds or so, plugged the power back in & held the POWER switch in for 10 seconds The TX LED started flashing continuously & I saw MCU LD on the LCD screen. I then attempted again to connect the K3S using the Utility program but no connection was able to be made. I switched off the power to the K3S & decided to try again. Now I can't switch the K3 ON or get back the flashing TX LED by holding in the POWER switch, its all just dead. I haven't tried the dreaded RESET as I don't think there is a saved Config file. I have used in the past an Expert Electronics MB1 transceiver which has an internal full blown W10 computer in it & communicates with logging programs etc also on that same internal PC via VSP's, VAC's etc. That does of course reduce the necessary hardware cables between the transceiver & an external laptop or PC plus reduces the footprint on the shack desk. [Elecraft] K$ Linux OS
I thinking of pre-ordering a K4 but on the Elecraft website it says "The K4 incorporates a powerful, fast-booting, Linux-based computing module. This module manages the LCD and streaming I/O, including HDMI, Ethernet, etc. But it is also a general-purpose computer that can accommodate future in-box applications such as logging, external equipment control, even advanced data modes. Elecraft will seek input from the user community regarding such applications, then tailor them to the K4." I currently normally use N1MM Logger Plus or sometimes Wintest as my logging program with my K3S. Which is the best contest Linux based logging program available or should I be able to use N1MM under WINE? [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU Memories
My thanks to Dick & Dave. Using the Utility program sorted out my problem. [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU Memories
In my station I have a SteppIR yagi for 20M - 6M, a rotatable Optibeam dipole for 30M & 40M and a wire dipole for 80m &160M. The SteppIR & Optibeam are both resonant antennas & I use the KPA1500 in ATU Bypass. However I need the ATU for the 80M wire dipole when moving from the CW end to the SSB end of the band or for using the dipole on 160M. A single output coax runs from the amplifier to an auto antenna switch (using BCD codes) at the base of the mast. The KPA1500 does not seem to remember which bands the ATU is in Bypass mode & which bands are in ATU Tune mode. If I forget to change the ATU setting in the heat of a Contest, the amp switches into Standby with the Hard fault condition. Can the KPA1500 ATU be made to remember whether the ATU is in Bypass or In by band or have I just got to be more careful? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K2 connecting to N1MM on Laptop
Hi Don (& Mark) I checked the cable which was OK - it is a 4 wire cable Don but the white is not connected. However I have just found that the baud rate in N1MM+ was not set to 4800 in the Config/Hardware tab. When I changed it to 4800 everything started working OK. Thank you for your help, once again! 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K2 connecting to N1MM on Laptop
Hi Thanks for your interest & the replies received so far. For the avoidance of doubt, I know that the KIO2 is not a true RS232 socket & I constructed the shielded 4 wire adaptor cable (as in the KIO2 manual) to plug into the K2 KIO2 port & plug the FTDI chipset USB/RS232 into that cable & then into the laptop USB port. 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K2 connecting to N1MM on Laptop
Hi, after about 4 years of dormancy using other radios, I've just about finished building assembling my K2 (not the 100W version). I have built & installed all the accessory modules so far except for the Noise Blanker. All have checked out OK after replacing a "dud" trimmer in the ATU module. I now want to connect the K2 to N1MM+ on the laptop, presumably using an FTDI chipset USB/RS232 port connector plugged into the laptop. I have also downloaded the Virtual Serial Port Emulator program & created a few virtual COM ports in the same way as I would if using the K3 with N1MM+. Using MENU/DISPLAY in the K2, I have switched the PORT - ON, but I don't see anywhere to specify specific ports for connecting to the logging program & I note that N1MM+ is not in the lists of programs in the KIO2 manual, which seems somewhat of an oversight to me but I guess it's a historic omission? I'm sure others have had a similar problem & hope that someone can point me in the right direction? I had a K2 some years ago & seem to remember using a Microham MK2 successfully but I hope to find a way of directly connecting the K2 without using a Microham. Any help or guidance appreciated 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K2 Mic Extender & Patch panel
Hi I've just got my K2 out of its box where its been sitting for about 5 years & I'm just checking things out! I've found I fitted one of those boards from KI4GGX & WB2ART which enabled you to easily configure the K2 mic wiring for different mics. Unfortunately in the meantime I've mislaid the original documentation & cannot find it on the Web. Heir site seems to have shutdown. Can anyone let me know the jumper settings for the patch panel please? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3S Problem with Filters Update
I contacted Elecraft Support as advised & Doug suggested I re-seat the filters in the main board & the Sub Receiver. Lo & behold,... the problem disappeared and audio from all filters is now normal! [Elecraft] K3S Problem with Filters
I had done that Don as per the Manual - 1-2dB for 400Hz & 3-4 dB for the 250Hz filter. To get the right level of loudness I have had to add the max ie.8 dB. So, is something else wrong? [Elecraft] K3S Problem with Filters
I have recently fitted a Sub Receiver & some additional filters to my new to me K3S. I now have in the main RX, a 6K for AM, a 2.8K, 2.1K, 0.4K & 0.25K. In the sub RX there is a 2.8K, 2.1K, 0.7K, 0.4K & 0.25K. I have a problem with the 0.4K filter position in both receivers. Between about 0.45 & 0.35 in both receivers there is an immediate drop in volume, still copyable but not working correctly. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Buying Second Hand K3S
I have been offered a 100W K3S serial number 10598, at a reasonable price. However if my memory serves me right there had to be some factory circuit mods soon after introduction? This K3S was built from a kit here in the UK but had to be returned to the distributor with a fault "on the 10W board" which was replaced apparently. Does anyone know what were the circuit mods in the early K3S & should I avoid this particular K3S? 73 Ray G3XLG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
