Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 T/R Switch Failure

2014-04-16 Thread Roger Dallimore
My KPA500 kit did not work from the get go, this was also due to a
faulty relay. The amp was repaired under warranty in Italy where I had
excellent support and communication but the postage was horrendous,
nearly £200, and it was sent without the transformer!

I now always check VSWR on K3 and on KPA with KPA in STBY whenever i operate on
a new band and always have the KPA in STBY when I let the KAT500 tune. It is a
bit cumbersome but really not a big deal.

I would be surprised if I were the only one having had a failing KPA500 T/R
switch.

NB: Europeans sending their failed Elecraft gear for repair at the Elecraft
associate in Italy must pay for the shipping BOTH ways. This is clearly poorer
customer service than what Elecraft provided for its US customers.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU

My K3's internal ATU will match 40m to 6m fine using a 66 foot doublet

configuration (with fine tuning), it tunes the remaining bands fine.

Can anyone give me the L and C values for each tuner?

[Elecraft] K3 speaker or external speaker not muting

2013-06-29 Thread Roger Dallimore

Hello,

I use the PF1 button to toggle my external speakers on/off while having
headphones plugged into the front socket.

The problem is now for some reason the external speaker is on all the
time even when SPKR+PH is switched to NO. The K3's internal speaker
behaves the same way when external speakers are disconnected.

Before I take a look at the audio board has anyone else had this problem
or can suggest the a likely cause, or am I just doing something stupid!

Many thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate

2012-10-22 Thread Roger Dallimore
Hello Alessandro,

This has happened with my amp from new, Elecraft support (Jack Brindle)
have been working with myself and one or two others with this problem
for a solution. I'm sure he will soon be in touch after you have
contacted him.

You might find that when changing bands, this corrects this problem also.

Hi, this is IW0HQE, Alessandro, from Italy, a very happy owner of the superb
 K-line.

I would like to report what I consider a minor issue/behavior of my KPA500
 power amplifier.

The amplifier is working flawlessly, and I am definately very satisfied with
it. Only a very peculiar event happened a couple of times during the last
week : when I turned on the amplifier and put it on Oper mode, when I begun
my transmission the PTT triggered correctly (the * symbol appeared as well
in the leftmost part of the display) but there was no power output at all.
This was solved by simpli turning the amp OFF and then back online. I will
now describe the event with further details :

 1) I have owned the amplifier since 18/09/2012 (one month) and the event
happened only two times during the last week.

 2) The first time the event happened was right after my last K3 and P3
firmware upgrades. After upgrading both the devices, I then turned on the
KPA500 to work a DX station and there was no power output; turning OFF and
then back ON the amp solved it.

 3) The second time the event happened was a couple of days later : I was
listening to some DX stations and pileups for fun, then I needed the
amplifier to make a few calls, I turned ON the rear panel switch, put the
amp on OPER and then begun transmitting, but still no power output. Turning
the amp OFF and then ON solved it.

 4) Both times the event happened, the rear panel switch was turned ON from
 the OFF position.

 5) Power drive 20 watts. CW mode.

 6) Temperature reading at the moment of the event : 22-23 °C.

 7) SWR of my antenna on the band (15 meters the first time and 10 meters the
 second time) 1,3:1 or better.

 8) HV : 74,3

 9) Both the events happened after installation of Firmware Revision 04.51
 and DSP 2.76.

 10) I tried to turn off the amplifier after the second event without
switching the real panel button in the OFF position, and the event never
happened again. I cannot figure out if this is just a coincidence, but maybe
it could be of some use to report it.

I have seen this event, or some that have a strong resemblance have already
 been reported :

 http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA-500-no-RF-until-power-cycle-td7017734.html
 http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-No-power-out-in-quot-OPER-quot-mode-td7472228.html

I have reported mine also, as suggested by W6FB, Jack Brindle, so that
Elecraft could add this to the feedbacks already received, evaluate and (I
hope) find out and solve this minor issue.

Thank you for your attention. My very best regards.

 IW0HQE - Alessandro Merolli

the center by a small amount, perhaps 1mm. At the rear the top cover is
flush with the rear panel in the center...no protrusion at all. This is a
cosmetic issue but does detract a bit for the fit and finish of the rest

Has anyone else seen this issue? Thought I would ask before calling home.

Like you I cannot fathom why the K144XV is so low in it's received signal

 are S9-S9+.
I (and others) have asked Elecraft about the discrepancy but as yet the low S
 meter reading issue remains unfixed.
It used to read a little high when compared to other rigs and firmware
version 3.97 made it read quite accurately.

You are not liable to import duty but most of my many orders from

arrive with a demand for import duty before Parcel Force will hand over
the parcel.

Keep every sticker on the parcel just in case you are charged. I have

usually taking several months and they have always asked for the

I can confirm that;

Ports have been checked with K3 utility
Checked correct port in device manager on PC

I am using KUSB with latest drivers since arrival of K3 #191
K3 is set at 38400 baud

I'm going to examine the transistor on the IO board. Apparently the
plastic transistors can degrade over time on older K3's and the voltage
drops under load to the RS232. Thanks to K1WHS for this suggestion.

[Elecraft] K3 not communicating with PC

2010-01-07 Thread Roger Dallimore
Hi all,

I can't work out why my K3 has stopped communicating with my PC. Besides
the K3 utility I'm using HRD. Up to now I've used the KUSB which has
worked fine, it was bought with K3 #191 at the same time. I reinstalled
the drivers checked Baud rate (38400), swapped ports etc but still no go.

I then tried a standard RS232 instead, but still it does not work.

What am I missing here? Any help would be appreciated (my email is set
to digest mode).

[Elecraft] P3 display of K3 filter bandwidth and other information

I'd rather put a KPA800 inside ;-)

But we'll supply simple P3-to-K3 support hardware to ensure that
the P3 doesn't move when you push the buttons. Or you can weight it
down by putting your own power supply inside, which is what I plan to
do :)

Any news from Dayton about the long awaited amps 800/1500?

I'm pleased to hear about the K144XV though, just what I need.

[Elecraft] KDVR3 installed now no RF power

2009-01-01 Thread Roger Dallimore
I installed the KDVR3 to #191 last night and it appears to work fine
(enabled in Config) but I now have very little RF output when connected
to a dummy load. The 100w PA doesn't appear to kick in when the power is
increased above 12 watts and there is no power output showing on the
meter at all. The ATU relays click when activated but no SWR value
appears.

I'm using the latest firmware and have double checked that all the pins
lined up when I reassembled the front panel. At the same time as
fitting the KDVR3 I incorporated the speaker amp mod, front panel mic
mod (ground pin 7) and the keying rise time mod. After each of these
were done I checked resistance as per instructions and all appears fine
there and I feel confident that I didn't damage anything else while do
these mods (famous last words!).

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated about where to check next,
later this evening I'll remove the KDVR3 and see what happens.

TIA 73

2009-01-01 Thread Roger Dallimore

You're sure that CONFIG:KPA3 is PA nor? Perhaps you changed CONFIG:KPA3
when you enabled the KDVR3?
Dick, K6KR

Yes, KPA3 is set to PA nor still can't figure out whats going on.

Thanks for your reply though.

[Elecraft] Hex key v Kent paddle

2007-09-20 Thread Roger Dallimore

Hi Bill,

I've had my Kent twin paddle for a number of years and have been very pleased
with it. I did try the Hex key and Begali at the Elecraft booth at Dayton a
couple of years ago and found them both very good too, I'd like to have either
of them. The Kent paddle, as previously mentioned has a more solid feel in use
over the lighter touch of the other two. Down to personal preference at the end
of the day.

Throughout this whole paddle discussion, I haven't heard anybody mention the Kent paddle from UK. Is anyone besides me using this paddle (or used it and went away from it)? Opinions pro/con?

[Elecraft] KX1 zapped!

2006-04-19 Thread Roger Dallimore
During a QSO whilst in the mountains of North Wales I received a string of
electric shocks (even through thick gloves) with my KX1 rapidly switching on
and off. Wisely thinking that this was not healthy I immediately switched
the KX1 off and pulled out the antenna (66' doublet).

This occurred during a heavy hail shower, a small VHF yagi was crackling
loudly with static so I guess a static build up was the culprit with my KX1.
After the storm passed I fired up the KX1 and proceeded to work a few more
stations but alas it was only showing about 6~700 mW output on all three
bands.

Not having much experience in fault finding can any kind soul out there
advise me where to start checking which components might be affected?

Many thanks in advance,

[Elecraft] KX1 balun

2005-09-10 Thread Roger Dallimore

I asked him whether or not he used a balun, and he said no,
he just fed it directly into the radio. I suppose his
antenna could be fairly well-balanced or that the KX1 is
able to tolerate a fair amount of imbalance.

Hi Dan,

I always feed my KX1/K2 direct with a 66' doublet without a balun,
never had any trouble tuning on the bands and always worked well.

Hi Gil,

I got mine from The RF Connection www.therfc.com
Check out their KevWeave light antenna wire (thin kevlar rope with copper
braid covering)
ideal for light portable antennas.
