[Elecraft] KXPA100 problem
Rcvd # 77 today.My only problem is that when I turn the KX3 on the Amp does not come on. I set PA in menu to on. If I turn it on manually with the switch it works ok. I turned the Amp on in the menu. I have down loaded latest firmware for the KX3 and the AMP. I worked at Speer Carbon Company back then. We made those carbon/graphite plates for the 813's, 811's and several other tubes. We wore white gloves while handling the material. [Elecraft] N3FJP ACLog 3.3
I have the latest updates and do not have those problems. 73 Geo/W2BPI I've noticed since a few firmware updates ago that if you are using the rig interface inside of ACLog 3.3 the logger pauses and seems to hang for a bit waiting on something. If I turn off Rig Interface the logger responds very quick. If I click inside the Call box I can get maybe two characters typed in before it hangs for 5-10 seconds...and then it will be fine for maybe 30 seconds or so. Also, when uploading to LoTW the pauses will sometimes cause the upload to time out and not complete. Was there any changes since the NB and NR firmware update that may have caused this issue? I have had my KX3 about a month now. I have never worked digital modes before. It sounded very easy in the manual. So I listened to a few PSK31 stations. Wow you have to read fast! I hear CQ's and try to reply. No luck! Try a few CQ's myself. No replies. I must be doing something wrong. I don't have any trouble making contacts on CW. I tried both 40 and 20 meters. I bought several 18VDC ones and pried them open. There was enough room inside to add a regulator and extra filter cap. Used with other QRP rigs but never with a KX3. So filtering of the DC is necessary as well as good regulation. Most wall warts out of the box have neither. My on the road AC supply is a MeanWell switcher. It's got a few broad HF spurs. I treated these as conducted emissions and used a Laird LFB174095 ferrite core w/ 5 turns through it to suppress them. There are still a few spurs being radiated, and even though they're broad they are also below the atmospheric noise level. KX #6 only hears them with the antenna cable disconnected. I used Vibroplex for about 40 years. I took 3 of 1/4 copper tubing and replaced weights with it.. Crimped it on. Then I wound large solder on a alligator clip. This could really slow down the dits. But I cud also send very fast with it by moving the alligator clip on the tubing. Chris, I have used mine mobile 40,30,20, 17. I use hamstick ant. Many contacts including some DX even on 40. I use mine also potable with a 32' Vert, held up with a Jackite pole. I have also used some 2 watt rigs mobile on 40 meters. Kept me company going back and forth to work. I have been running my K1 mobile for over a year now, mostly on 40 CW, less so on 20. I use Hamstick clones, mostly the OPEKs,and have had some amazing QSOs with the K1, most notably a 40 M QSO to ZL early one morning from down at my favorite local mobile operating spot, Stonington Point, CT, about 5 miles from here. I find this interesting. When I am struggling to copy a weak station I very the RIT to get a tone that I copy better. At age 71 with 82% hearing loss I guess I am tuning to the best tone I have left. I do not use my hearing aids with headphones. I don't copy SSB very well so am thankful that I have favored CW for 58 years. I think with volume too high when I was younger is a big part of my hearing loss. I remember Mom Dad yelling for me to turn the volume down. Even with headphones they could hear it. [Elecraft] K2 Heatsink temperatures
Put a thermometer in the middle of the heatsink on my rig. On long CW xmissions I see temps as high as 145 Degrees F. Shack temp is 85F. I have the fan set to run on high all the time. Is this normal. I laid another small fan on the heatsink and the temp stayed below 115F. I had forgotten I was to retighten the screws that hold them to the heat sink after 5-10 hrs operation. I know I was way past the 5-10 hrs. Was I surprised how loose the screws were. Lucky I did not wreck the finals. I was working a weak station with QSB that was at about my S4 noise level. Happened to hit ant. 2 button. Now the noise is gone but I can hear the station weak but now solid copy. I bought a Vibroplex original model from another ham who did not like it. It was 1953 and I was a novice. I did not like it either. So I ground down the width of the spring. Then used 4 inches of copper tubing over the end and pinched to fit tight. Then I used a big fannestock clip with some big solder wrapped around it to vary the speed. It would send slow but also worked good at 35-40WPM. Wish I had a picture. I sold it 5Yrs ago. Yep we enjoyed the video clip of the three bugs. I have heard some bad sounding bugs lately. Either poorly adjusted or perhaps with heavy spring. [Elecraft] K2 #6211 160-80-40 did not work
Don/W3FPR helped me find the problem. It was relay K15. The rig had worked great for about 9 months before it quit. Must have been some stress in the relay from soldering. We did this off the reflector so I am posting here in case others have a similar problem. Don's instructions are easy to follow and he replies quickly. Is there a good paint that is legal out there. Even the powder coated stuff here does not hold up very good. My PFR-3 was the best ever. It took a real beating and still looked new. The environmental people make it tough to make really good paints. As Don says I find the audio filter very useful in my K2. I also have a Nescafe filter kit from the New England QRP Club that works very well on all my rigs including the K2. My old homebrew rcvr built around a BC453 with 85KC IF's had a homebrew Q-multiplier that was gud at peaking or nulling a signal. Some of the gud ol da stuff if it were sitting beside my new rig would probably not be as gud as I seem to remember. Whoops got off topic thinking of good ol days. I added 160 to my K2 last week. I am very surprised how many QSO's I have had on that band while only running 10 watts. The antenna is just a 80 meter Carolina Windom with the coax shorted and fed as a single wire. Built in tuner shows a 1.2:1 match. Been a ham for 57 years and this is my first experience with 160. Built and installed the 160 kit in my K2 (6911) today. After alignment it works good on all bands transmitting on CW. But on all bands receiving cw the cw tone is distorted! What could I have done? Before supper was working. Left on and went to supper. Came back from supper and no display but power is on. No sig heard. Turn power switch off. When I turn it back on no display and loud hum in headphones. Then I hear some motor boating and headphones go dead. Check input voltage. SW off 13 VDC, SW on 4 VDC. Check cable and it is OK. Try another power supply and cable. Same thing happens. Now what? Received the K2PAKIT today. Besides the two output transistors there are (2) PNA transistors and another part that looks like a resistor with a color code: brown, green, gold, gold. What am I to do with these xtra parts? Says caps C45 C60 are smaller. The caps I rcvd are all the same size. [Elecraft] K2 Xmit alignment problem
When doing final alignment I discovered I have no output on 12 meters. But it works on 10 meters. I put the audio filter in and it works. Now to do the tuner! [Elecraft] K2 new build problem.
Completed assembly yesterday. Rcvr works FB. When I try to xmit on any band I get a Hi Current message. It reads 5 amps. External watt meter connected to K2 and dummy load shows 10 watts but I cannot change the power output with the knob on the front panel. Also I don't hear any sig from the K2 on my K1. [Elecraft] K1 AGC
I just recently built a K1 serial # 2821. Very nice rig. I have noticed that when I am working a station with a very strong sig that when I stop sending and he starts to send that his first character is very loud. I tried changing C31 to 1uf as suggested elsewhere. It is an improvement. [Elecraft] K1-4 Bands
I just ordered a K1-4 to build after the first of the year. I wanted to build it for 80-40-30-20. But there is not a 80 meter option listed. I really do not want to mess with using 2 boards. Is there a way for me to add 80 meters to the 4 band board?
