Rig will come plug and play ready, you will only need a power supply for the
Amp and an antenna. Rig is setup to use stand alone portable with a built in
antenna tuner that will tune a wet noodle. Also the battery is less than a
year old. To work QRO just hook the amp/tuner combo to the rig via the
supplied cables to the K2 and a power supply. K2 can also be used on a power
supply.

This is an awesome setup, the only reason I am considering replacement is
because I want something that will take up less room in my saddlebags on my
motorcycle.

Note: I have never used this rig for voice, but there is no reason it should
not work as it should.

[Elecraft] [K2] RE: KAT100 error Fixed Part One

2009-09-28 Thread W4HDM

Recap:KAT100 Tuner was going through the motions of tuning showing an SWR
of 1.0-1 but K2 showing a high SWR. Reduced power on TX on all bands. SWR
scale lights on the KAT100 not lighting during tune or TX.

I replaced D1 and D2 diodes on the KAT100, per Skip, WB4DAD's suggestion.
This has the KAT100 tuning and showing lights operating as they should. I
suspect a near lightning strike or power surge caused these to go bad?

PART 2: The only issue I see now is that the tuner always reverts to ANT 1
on power up. If I shut down while set to ANT2, when I power up it will show
2 for a second then go to 1. Anyone had this problem?

Thanks again to WB4DAD and his friend that passed this info to him.

Also, I would like to thank Don, W3FPR for his help. He has helped me on
several problems and gets my vote into the Elecraft Hall of Fame. I suspect
he would have solved this as well if not for my post being rejected from the
site.

Now to put it all back together!

Note: I ordered 10 of these diodes from an internet source, but being
impatient I found them at FRY's. Same thing with the 40 pin firmware
socket. So if anyone needs diodes or 20 pin sockets, feel free to contact me
off list.

[Elecraft] [K2] RE: KAT100 error

2009-09-26 Thread W4HDM

Don I posted these two post on the reflector via the web site and they are
still showing as pending so I am trying to do it through email. If two post
show up . my apologies.

Good morning Don and thanks for the reply.

I ran the test on the K2 into a dummy load. It tunes great on all bands and
the only time I see the HiCUR message is if I max the power out setting.
Actually I think it starts at around 13.8 and above.

So, I pulled the Firmware to re-seat it and low and behold the number 1 slot
doesn't look quite right. I do get continuity from the socket's solder pad
to the pin on the firmware, but perhaps it is not enough?

I will order a new socket today and once that is installed I will go from
there.

If this socket is in fact bad, could it have caused the firmware to go bad
as well ... should I also replace it? I only ask because of the time
involved for any orders to reach me from Elecraft.

Thanks for your help Don, I will post my results once I have replaced the
socket.

POST 2

UPDATE:KAT100 Issue

Removed the 20 pin socket for the firmware and replaced with a new one. Same
problem.

I also received an email from WB4DAD suggesting I try replacing the diodes
at D1 and D2. He said he had a problem with his KAT100 that sounded a lot
like mine and that fixed it for him. I have an email in with Elecraft
support to get their thoughts on this. In the meantime I ordered the diodes
today so I will have them just in case.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Damon,

Thanks for removing the KPA100 from the picture, now we know the problem
is the KAT100 or the base K2. To eliminate the base K2 from suspicion,
test it into a dummy load and see if the HiCUR messages are still present.

While looking for solder problems, first check pin 1 of the KAT100
firmware socket.
What you are describing sounds a lot like a problem with the firmware chip.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 error

2009-09-23 Thread W4HDM

Don,

Ok I removed the KPA100 and connected directly to the K2, I also tested with
2 different jumpers, as well as useing the RF in and the AUX connection. All
give the same results:

KAT100's relays sound and the K2 shows 1.0-1 swr. Lights on the KAT100 do
not light up on tune or TX.
K2 reduced power on key up (at 10 watts setting and 5 watt setting).
Occasionally I get a High Current message. Current set at 3.50

I checked the RS232 for continuity and it is OK.

I started doing the test in the KAT100 Manual. When I set the antenna to 2
and turn off the K2 and then back on I noted the antenna back on ANT 1 I
also noticed when first powered up the lights on the KAT100 are bright but
then dim a bit.

Maybe this will point towards the problem?

I suspect I have a bad solder point somewhere in the KAT100.

[Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 error

2009-09-22 Thread W4HDM

My KAT100 was working fine then developed a problem recently.
For those wondering what happened to my for sale listing this is why I
removed it.

At first the tune sequence would tune at times and other times it would stay
at 9.9-1 and the lights would work most of the time. (Using a dummy load as
well as an antenna)

I checked the solder connections in the KAT100 and retouched a few. I
noticed no change in behavior. I put the radio away for a few days and
revisited the problem today

Before doing anything I did a SWR Bridge alignment on the KPA100 just to be
sure nothing had changed. I adjusted for 0 voltage using a DMM as instructed
in the manual.

Currently, the tune sequence gives a 1.0-1 reading on the K2 meter but the
scale lights on the KAT100 do not light up while tuning or when keying. The
antenna and power lights are working properly.

When keying 100 watts into a dummy load the power is reduced by various
amounts depending on the band and the K2 shows HI Refl, the same symptoms
using an antenna.

Using the menu for tuner readings, after hitting tune in the dummy load, I
get:

L00.4
C0.08
nET2
t 197
E243
Init
F1.05
L0-L8 get relay clicks as well as
C0-C8 and
N1-N2

I am using the The KAT100/KPA100 in their own enclosure.

Any help on where I should start from here to solve the problem?

Thanks,
Damon

(Don .. I sent you an email on this when the symptoms first started, maybe
it was lost in SPAM)

All necessary cables for plug and play (no antenna)
Hard case to pack it all in (silver)

EC2 Blank project enclosure with:

KPA100 100w option with KIO2 RS-232 Interface
(you will need a power supply for the amp it does not run off the radio's
internal battery)
KAT100-2 100w Auto tuner with EC2 Panels
Latest updates and firmware
Manual

Serial number 0473 purchased used January of 2009. I added the 160m option,
battery option, all of the upgrades (MODS), and all firmware to bring it up
to date. It came with the KPA 100 that you could swap with the internal 20w
tuner top to make it a 100w rig or use the top with the 20w tuner to make it
a QRP Rig.

Rather than swapping, I purchased and built the 100w tuner (2/22/2009) in
the matching case (EC2) and installed the Amp into the top of that. I also
built another KIO2 RS-232 Interface for the amp for connection to the radio
Now to go QRP all you have to do is unhook the 100w tuner via cables and
your all set.

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 & KAT100 in EC2 For Sale

2009-04-13 Thread W4HDM

I have a new KAT100 tuner (built March 4th, 2009) with a KPA100 w/KIO2 in a EC2
enclosure with the 3'' tilt stand.

The amp just received the KPA100UPKT, KPA100MODKT, KPA100SHIELDKT, and the
latest firmware (1.10).
Although the EC2 was purchased new (Feb 2009), it has a few very slight scuffs
on the sides. The amp portion came with the K2 I purchased used in Jan. 2009.
The radio was advertised as never used. S/N 473 ... it looks like the amp may
have been installed later.

I am selling this because I do not need high power, this rig will be used for
portable operation. I used the amp and tuner this weekend for the SKCC Sprint
and it appeared to operate as it should ... no problems.

I will include the short side of the control cable so that you can add it to
your existing cable or I would be willing to trade the complete cable for your
regular cable. The sale will also include the manual (Ap and Tuner), a short
BNC jumper and the power cord. All you will need to hook this to your K2
(assuming you have the KIO2 on your K2) will be a short coax jumper with pl259s
terminated on each end, and the control cable assembled (unless you trade yours
for mine)

Pictures available on request. Live demo via my Live Shack Feed can be
arranged. http://w4hdm.camstreams.com

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Average Cost of Used K2/100???

2009-03-19 Thread W4HDM

I am a new Elecraft owner and didn't know much about them when I purchased my
K2/100 s/n 0473. I found out the hard way that the deal I thought I was
getting was soon squashed once I did most of the upgrades to bring it up to
date.(Firmware and Hardware) Still have more to go! Buyer beware.

That being said, I ended up paying a decent price and had a great learning
experience doing the upgrades, and integrating the KAP100 into a newly built
(by me) KAT100, as well as well as building and installing a couple more
options.

My point make sure you know whats inside the rig you are interested in
buying, it will be a major factor on the price you pay.

Unless the rig you are considering is up to date and fully loaded, I would
recommend getting very familiar with the Elecraft website and all of the
options and upgrades available along with the costs of each. If you are
working on a budget, don't forget to factor in shipping and builder fees. If
you are doing it yourself and have never built before, you may have to
factor in the basic tools needed to build the kits you plan on adding to
your used rig. In my case, solder, magnifier, cutters, grounding strap,
Pana-vice, and soldering station. This stuff adds up fast!

Once you have all of this information you should know what you would be
willing to pay for a used K2/100.

Damon,

Well, I haven't heard that problem in a long time, but the solution is easy.

On the top of the Control Board, just to the right of center is a switch
to change the voltage display from external to internal - you must have
bumped it in the upgrade process - set it to the INT position and all
will be well.

[Elecraft] [K2] K2 K2ATOBKT "Low Battery"

2009-03-07 Thread W4HDM

HI,

OK I am just finishing up the A to B mod and somewhere at the end between
Misc control board changes and sidetone Modification or possibly after the
XFILMDKT I am getting "Low Battery" warning and "000" reading for voltage
when tapping Display. This is with power coming from a power supply and not
the internal battery.

I did miss a pin count on the sidetone mod and fixed that. (used pin 7
rather than 6) and for the 82-mH inductor, I missed a pin by one as well
(using pin 8 and 10 rather than the proper 7 and 10) and this has been
fixed.

And it was all going so well!

Thanks in advance!

Damon,

The resistor *may* be OK, often the ceramic coating gets chipped and the
resistor is still intact.
OTOH, you can certainly replace it with the one you removed.

As a suggestion - since you are working on the KPA100, why not get the
KPA100UPKT and install all the current changes. Actually I don't know
why the KPA100MDKT is still offered since most of the components in that
kit are also supplied with the KPA100UPKT.

[Elecraft] [K2] K2 KPA100MDKT

2009-03-05 Thread W4HDM

While doing the KPA100MDK to my K2 I noticed R13 on the KPA100 board has a
chip in it like the one in the picture (instruction sheet) for R22. R22 on
mine looked to be ok and was removed and replaced per the instructions.

My question: Can/should I use the removed R22 to replace the chiped resistor
at R13? They have the same values. Or is the chip harmless as is?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - KIO2 AUX I/O Install

2009-02-13 Thread W4HDM
Thanks Don!

After your last email I read through the remainder of the manual for the
install and found that yes the pins are labeled on the schematic on the
back! Duh. I now understand how these pins are labeled.

Yes, my K2 had the KAP100 and I removed it with the intention of mounting it
in the KAT100-2 as a separate unit. For now I have the other top installed
with the KAT2 and battery option. I still have a ways to go to get this rig
up to date but I'm working on it!

After connecting the K2 to my PC and turning on the port it was recognized
by HamRadioDeluxe and seemed to function as it should.

One last question for the reflector on this install and I should be done.

My K2's Owner's Manual .. page 100 states "Once the host adapter is
installed you will have three display modes freq/mode, real time clock, and
voltage/current displays" Mine only has the original 2 ...no clock. Does
this option only show up if you have the KDSP2 installed?

Damon,

Here is where things get hard and complicated --
2 wide header pins ar numbered differently than ICs. Start at pin 1,
then pin 2 is on the other side of the two rows, pin 3 is next to pin 1,
etc. Net result is that the odd numbered pins are on one side and the
even numbered are on the other. I hesitate to mention that the DBxx
series of connectors is numbered differently than either ICs or header
pins - sory, but it is a confusing world.
The one thing that helps is that the Elecraft schematics show the proper
numbering of the pins. Other schematics are not so kind and simply mark
the pin number, but show the connector or IC as a block with the pins
numbered in some random order.

The pin that is cut off on the header is pin 4 which is unused (pin 1 is
at the top of the control board toward the edge). Your K2 must have had
the KPA100 installed at one time, and for that installation, pin 4 is
cut off and the connecting ribbon cable is keyed. Since the KIO2 AUX
board cannot be successfully installed upside down and allow the top
cover to still be installed, keying of the mating connector is not
necessary.

BTW - if you have the KAT2 as well as the KIO2 installed in that K2, the
green wire on the KAT2 connector must be at the top.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - KIO2 AUX I/O Install

2009-02-13 Thread W4HDM
Don,

Thanks for your help, yes that was the problem ...my lack of
experience! After counting the pins the correct way the voltage is now
within specs with a -9.6.

My electronics building started just 2 days ago. I went to the local
electronics store (Fry's) and purchased a Hakko 936 soldering station and a
cheap sounds to lights kit to see if I was capable enough to continue. It
worked after assembly so I moved on to my K2 and built the 160m mod ... hey
it worked as well and looked pretty good! SO .. this KIO2 is my 3rd attempt
at building. Now that I have the pin counting down I'll proceed with crossed
fingers!

BTW ... at P4 on the control board where the AUX board will plug in, pin 9
(using your method) has been cut out and there is no wire going to it from
the tuner. Is this a normal mod and should I cut any of the pins from the
new AUX board? I assume it was cut to prevent some sort of short if it was
plugged into wrong?

Thanks again!

Damon,

From your description of the 'pin counting', I wonder if you counted
correctly - an integrated circuit is numbered counterclockwise around
the chip starting with pin 1 which is identified with a dot or a bar or
a tapered edge or some distinguishing characteristic. Pin 8 is on the
same side of the IC as pin 1, but at the opposite end.
The voltage at U1 pin 8 should be the same as the voltage on the anode
of D1. If these are both positive voltages, about the only thing that
could cause a problem like that is if D2 and D3 are installed backwards
- check the orientation.

negative reading of between -6 and - 12 VDC" I show positive 5.02v and
I am not sure how to proceed. I counted the pins from pin one left to right
top to bottom. Firmware ver. 2.04 & 1.09

FYI this K2 was a K2/100 and the KIO2 was installed with the amp. So the
control board mod on page 10 was done when I received the rig. I removed the
amp and now use the K2 as QRP. I am installing a new KIO2 kit so that I can
eventually install the amp in the EC2 or 100w Tuner as well as have pc
control capabilities.

Any help is appreciated . Thanks!

[Elecraft] K2 Frequency Probe

2009-02-06 Thread W4HDM
I recently purchased a used K2 and I am doing the upgrades to the firmware
etc. The rig did not come with the frequency counter probe or the parts to
make one. Does anyone have a spare kit or assembled probe they would be
willing to let go before I shell out the 10 bucks for a new one? Thanks in
advance. mycall(at)bellsouth.net also good on QRZ
