[Elecraft] K3 noise-blanker
Hi Jim, I had both the K3 and Orion 2 in my shack. We have several appliances that generate RFI and neighbors' devices that do, too. Both the K3 and O2 seem to handle them and allow me to make my Q's. Now, when W1AW is on the air (as well as some other QRO stations in my areaI live about 5 miles from W1AW) and contributes to the noise with IMD products, the O2 works better. The O2 stayed and the K3 left. Mike, WA1SEO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] PRO II vs K2
The reality of this topic is that when you compare a K2 with an ICOM ProII, you have to add up the cost of a comparably equipped K2DSP module, 160M, module, 60M module, external antenna tuner, 100W amplifier, Noise Blanker module, and SSB module. The total rapidly approaches $2000! If you get it as close to a Pro as possible, add another $400 to $600 for a Jack Smith panadapter and then several hundred dollars for the computer to work with it. I guess that I can't see a realistic comparison at this point. The K2 is WAY more expensive with comparable features and I'm not even including the cost of labor. Is the performance of the K2 better? I've used both and in some ways it is and others it is not. That's subjective. You have to be the judge. The K2 got it's heralded reputation with laboratory measurements. In my opinion, it's real world performance was significantly different. The K2 is an experience! Similarly, let's not compare a 10W K3 to other radios costing significantly more without being mindful of what options you need to include with a K3 to make a fair comparison. But what I find most interesting is the omission of the mechanical aspects of other radios versus any Elecraft kit. [Elecraft] Price Increases...and advertisements
Looks like Elecraft will have to change their advertisements to reflect the new pricing on the K3 and K2. "Elecrafts state-of-the-art K3 transceiver offers a unique combination of ultra-high performance and affordability. Both 100-watt and 10-watt (upgradeable) models are available. Starting at under $2,000 for the 100-W assembled model (K3/100), the rig is comparable in both features and performance to transceivers listing at up to six times its price." [Elecraft] Mechanical HW question
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew where to procure the 2-D fasteners that are used on the K2 chassis or are they a custom part? Thanks in advance. [Elecraft] Filter alignment question
Hi, I was monitoring the K2's local oscillator frequency and I noticed that as I tune to WWV in the various modes, that the LO frequency is different at zero beat. I expected an offset (w/respect to SSB) in the CW mode but I expected the LO to be the same at zero beat whether I was in LSB or USB modes. It isn't so I am wondering if something is not aligned properly. Any insight is appreciated. [Elecraft] K2 opinions sought
Hi, I'm in the process of designing an interface for my K2 that would bring functions, currently enabled or changed by tapping keys or holding keys, to independent controls. I am also going to bring some functions, that are enabled by navigating through the menu system, to single button/switch functions. I am doing all of this to bring a big radio feel to my small and capable K2. I would like to find out which functions you would like to see implemented with a single control. As an example, instead of tapping the mode button to select USB, LSB, or CW, I will just turn the rotary switch to the desired mode. Thanks for your input. [Elecraft] For SSB op's only, T/R delay K2
I've been discussing the following issue off line and I wanted to know if I am imagining a problem. I have set the SSB mode to PTT and have adjusted the T/R delay to be 0...which means I should have virtually no delay from when I release the PTT switch until the time I hear audio. Well, I have a delay in the neighborhood of a couple of hundred milli-seconds. I confirmed that the VOX modes work and that the delay is adjustable so I was wondering When you release the PTT switch, do you hear audio instantly or is there a small delay. As a comparison, there is virtually no delay when I use my ICOM radio. Thanks for any insight. [Elecraft] K2 SSB mode and T/R switch time
Hi, I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this but the time for my K2 to switch from transmit back to receive in the SSB mode seems a bit lengthy. It's probably in the 200-400 mS range which is annoying. Am I missing a menu controlled item or is something wrong? Any insight would be appreciated. After logging 147 contacts during FD at the 5W level, this issue became very annoying. [Elecraft] Low receiver sensitivity
Hi, I recently assembled and XG1 calibrator and began checking some of my equipment. 4 out of 5 radios that I own indicated an S9 signal, however, my K2 did not. It registered an S5-S6. A friend of mine who borrowed my K2 indicated the receiver seemed to be a bit weak. I tweaked L34 (which was set properly) and tried peaking L1 and L2, which were also set properly. I'm wondering if I'm missing something simple before I begin to check some other items. The receiver appears to work properly in all other respects and to be truthful, I hadn't noticed it being a bit weak, but upon comparing it with an A/B switch, it lacks some sensitivity. Thanks in advance for any pointers. Mike, WA1SEO K2 #4788 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K2 tuning observation
Hi, I was tuning around on my K2 last evening and made an observation. While on the 80 Meter band, I decided to keep tuning up in frequency until the PLL lost lock, which didn't surprised me. What did surprise me was that when I kept tuning...into the 40 meter band, the PLL didn't reaccquire nor did I hear any band switching relays click. I switched bands to 40 via the pushbutton switches and all was fine. I switched back down to 80 using the same switches and the radio, although indicating a frequency in the 40 meter band, was "deaf", still. I'm curious if this is what others have experienced. It is no big deal but a bit odd. I know that the radio is HAM band only, but I would have expected the following: The display stops incrementing if the PLL isn't locked or detect that the display indicates a HAM frequency and allow the radio to funciton.
