Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
All, The discussion of desoldering tools inspired me to try something I've seen on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094ZCRXMN It's basically a solder sucker with a heated tip. $36, free Prime shipping. It arrived this morning, and I just tried it out. I dug out an old video board and desoldered a pin header. Worked *flawlessly*. The only real trick was to hold the tip on the board a little longer - to get that solder melted all the way down the hole. But that's for any desoldering tool. It cleaned out the holes very nicely, and did not mess up the lands or traces. - Jerry KF6VB On 2022-03-13 22:06, Tony wrote: All: Can anyone recommend a budget de-soldering iron that can be used in tight places? Steve Great idea: did you use self-fluxing enamel wire? This is common on small gauges used in signal circuits but not so common on large gauge wire used in power transformers that I recall. Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
As a valuable side note, the Hakko 808 makes an excellent enameled wire stripping/tinning tool for toroids and similar. I prop my up vertically, melt a blob of solder in the tip, plunge the enameled wire into the tip through the solder blob, wait a second or two and activate the vacuum. The excess solder is whisked away along with the enamel insulation leaving a brightly tinned and stripped wire. I believe I’ve actually used my 808 more for this than desoldering! It actually made building the toroids for a K2, T1, and other projects fun. Consider this valuable additional function as you justify the cost of a similar tool. +1 for the Hakko 808. One of the best purchases I’ve made in the realm of soldering related tools. Which, BTW, makes an excellent enameled wire stripping and tinning tool (toroids, etc.). Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
I recently bought a HAKKO FR-301 this year. This de-soldering iron was very expensive at $269 but it worked flawlessly to remove over 100 through hole relays - so it paid for itself quickly. I only bought this DS iron for a one-time project, but I can see why people love these things- they work great as long as you use the cleaning procedure after EVERY use. All of my work nowadays is SMD so I use hot air station ST-862, which was about $200 new and works great too. You mentioned the need to work in tight places - not really sure what 'tight' means in terms of physical dimensions (mm / inches). I do recommend paying careful attention to nozzle dimensions when buying any kind of de-soldering equipment. The FR-301 comes with a standard sized nozzle (N61-08 1.0mm) which works great for most generic work. I suspect you might need a different nozzle, perhaps a very long and thin nozzle such as N61-12, which costs about $18. Nozzle outer diameter is 2.3mm with length of 11mm, more info in link below: https://hakkousa.com/products/desoldering/n61-12-desoldering-nozzle-1-0-mm-extra-long.html As far as low-temp Rosin core solder, I have never found a need for it. My go-to choice for solder that works great every time is Kester "48", which has a melting point of 217°C. The flux residue is minimal, almost non-existent. I rarely clean away the RA rosin afterwards unless the solder joint is mission critical electrically. Kester "48" RA Activated Rosin Wire Diameter: 0.031” (0.8 mm) Alloy: 96.5% Tin / 3% Silver / .5% Copper Kester Part #: 83-7068-1402 ($5 USD for 0.4 oz pocket pack, or $50 USD for 1 pound spool) Charles - AC1FC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
I have a similar story when I worked for Centronics back in the 1980s. In the UK, we had one rework tech and he had the vacuum desoldering tool. Mostly he would remove components, but sometimes the rest of us would do our own work and the rework tech taught me how to use the tool properly and how to clean it. I can\t remember who made that tool, but I do remember a badge on it with the word “Swaplater”. I can’t say whether the cheap device I bought from Banged has as much suction as the “Swaplater” but I find it adequate for my needs as a hobbyist. 73, Alan - G4GNX > On 14 Mar 2022, at 22:24, Dave Fugleberg wrote: > > Back when I was a bench tech doing component level repair, I used a vacuum > desoldering station from Pace (I forget the model). If it's a board I care about - say the motherboard of my K2 - I would proceed directly to step 8 ( clip the part ). Parts are cheap. Boards are expensive. Back in the 70's I labored as a tech in a telephone equipment factory of a company that shall remain nameless ( Oh, all right, it was Northern Telecom ). Us techs troubleshot, but all rework was done by the rework girls. Their station was in the middle of the test floor. These ladies soldered and desoldered all day, and they were GOOD at it. It was mostly DIP TTL chips, although there were some big LSI's. They always started with step 8: Clip-clip-clip-clip-TOSS. One of my fellow "techs" ( I use the term advisedly ) had a unique technique for troubleshooting: He would mark the first two rows of chips and have the ladies replace them. If that didn't work, he would mark the SECOND two rows of chips... etc. Another ( much smarter ) guy was troubleshooting one of the boards in the dog pile. A +5-to-ground short. No progress. He came in one Saturday determined to conquer this thing no matter what. He found a 50A 5V supply and hooked it to the 5V and ground. With 50A flowing through the board, he took a sensitive DVM and probed - one side on the +5, other side ground. The spot with the lowest voltage was his short. What was it? An EXTRA plated through hole. I gained great respect for the conductive power of those holes... - Jerry KF6VB I wrote this long ago. Hopefully it's still as dubiously relevant as ever. Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
Dave and all, I have not used the Pace desoldering tool, but I have plenty of experience with the Hakko 808. The vacuum pump needs to be disassembled and cleaned of solder flux occasionally and once that is done, it has plenty of suction. That means the holes and plastic "flappers" in the pump need to be cleaned - I used alcohol successfully. Pay attention (or take photos) when disassembling and it will go back together just fine. Between the pump cleaning, it is necessary to clean out the nozzle after a dozen or so solder connections - use the tool that matches the nozzle diameter. The larger "collector tube" that catches the solder needs to be cleaned as well. You need to change the filters often - if you are using it a lot, keep a goodly supply of those ceramic filters on hand - they are not cheap, but become ineffective when they fill up with flux and solder bits (reduced vacuum). I used it for over 10 years while repairing the Elecraft legacy products. In fact I had 2 of them so I did not have to change from a small slender tip to a larger tip. If you are using one constantly, having 2 is a big help, but that is not for everyone. For similar reasons, when I was doing professional woodworking, I had 5 routers, 2 were dedicated to their attachments, but the other 3 were available to mount a variety of bits for the project being worked on. A hobbyist can get along with one, but a professional wants dedicated tools - time is money. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/14/2022 6:24 PM, Dave Fugleberg wrote: Back when I was a bench tech doing component level repair, I used a vacuum desoldering station from Pace (I forget the model). None are as good as the Pace. I’ve been tempted to buy a Hakko or one of its knock offs, but reviews generally say they don’t have enough suction. I’d love to hear an honest comparison between the Pace and the Hakko from someone who has used both. 73 de W0ZF On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 9:26 AM jerry wrote: It's hard to beat a good old big blue Soldapullt. Then if you have access to both sides of the board, you can heat each land with a soldering iron and pull the lead out with a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers. Then suck the land clean with the soldapullt. Alternatively, you can clean it with solder wick, and poke the hole through with a toothpick. I haven't had much luck with desoldering irons. I did buy a desoldering station. It has a vacuum pump in the base unit, and a separate iron in a stand, with a vacuum chamber and filter. The pump starts when you pull the trigger on the iron. It's a Chinese copy of a Hakko. First of all, the pump is not very strong. Not that much airflow or suction. Much less than a Soldapullt. Second, it takes it a LONG time to warm up, I guess because the desoldering head has high mass. - Jerry KF6VB On 2022-03-13 22:06, Tony wrote: All: Can anyone recommend a budget de-soldering iron that can be used in tight places? Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
I've had the Hakko 808 for many years. It has been used on through hole PCBs, boat anchors, toys, etc. There hasn't been any shortage of suction. Just keep the collection tube clean. My only regret is that I didn't purchase it years earlier! Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
I'm pretty fond of my Hakko 808. Alas, it has been discontinued and the current line of desoldering tools from Hakko is pretty expensive - $300 on up. I don't recall what I paid for mine but it was a lot less. If you find a used one for sale, grab it! /Rick N6XI On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 5:30 AM Dave wrote: > I use an ordinary fine tipped iron (M12) and solder wick. Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
Back when I was a bench tech doing component level repair, I used a vacuum desoldering station from Pace (I forget the model). That thing worked great- I pulled hundreds (maybe thousands) of through-hole parts from boards with it. They were (and are) expensive, but so are time and PC boards, so my employer equipped every bench with one. It had a glass tube in the handset that collected the solder. As long as you cleaned it regularly, it worked. I recently looked at some used ones but still couldn’t justify the price for my hobby needs, so I continue to use a variety of means to remove solder. None are as good as the Pace. I’ve been tempted to buy a Hakko or one of its knock offs, but reviews generally say they don’t have enough suction. I’d love to hear an honest comparison between the Pace and the Hakko from someone who has used both. 73 de W0ZF On Mon, Mar 14, 2022 at 9:26 AM jerry wrote: > It's hard to beat a good old big blue Soldapullt. > >To remove the offending part with minimal damage to its surroundings, > it's generally > wise to chop the part off its leads first. With all desoldering tools it's important to *regularly* clean the inside of solder debris. Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
It's hard to beat a good old big blue Soldapullt. To remove the offending part with minimal damage to its surroundings, it's generally wise to chop the part off its leads first.
For surface mount I would never use a soldering iron. Learn to use a hot air gun and just pick the components of with tweezers. For thru hole components I use a ‘proper’ desoldering gun which has a hole through the middle of the bit and will remove all solder surrounding a pin. With the right professional technique you gently move the pin around the hole, using the desoldering tool, which ensures that no part of the pin sticks to the plate-thru. Sorry I don’t have a link, but take a look at sites such as Banggood. They have some excellent desoldering ‘guns’ at around $40. 73, Alan - G4GNX > On 14 Mar 2022, at 05:06, Tony <73gu...@gmail.com> wrote: > > All: > > Can anyone recommend a budget de-soldering iron that can be used in tight > places? Re: [Elecraft] De-soldering Tool Recommendations?
I use an ordinary fine tipped iron (M12) and solder wick. I don’t think Antex irons are available in the USA, but if you check this link and search for an M12 iron you will see the type. https://www.antex.co.uk It can help to minimise board damage if you cut the legs off the component, then remove each leg individually, after all a board costs a lot more than a component. 73 Dave G4AON -- Sent from my iPhone SE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
