Re: [Elecraft] How do I make my K3 go to HP (100 W)

2009-05-12 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Jim, if you're observing unexpected behavior with the K3 Utility please
consult the K3 Utility Help section on that topic. If I get a question that
isn't answered in Help, I try to get that question answered in a subsequent
revision of the K3 Utility's Help text.

The first two sentences in the K3 Utility Help topic on 50 Watt Transmitter
Gain Calibration are The 50 watt calibration page is shown only if a KPA3
100-watt Power Amplifier has been installed and enabled through the K3
CONFIG:KPA3 menu selection. The K3 CONFIG:KPA3 menu selection must be PA
nor for 50 watt calibration.

I don't know how you initially got the KPA3 out of PA nor, but that's what
has to change to get more than 12 watts.

The K3 went to LP yesterday without me knowing it. I was surprised that no
one on the QCWA CW net could hear me until I finally looked at the power
meter. When CONFIG TX GN is examined, it says LP but I don't find a way to

I had planned on using the K3 for the 7th Call Area party tomorrow, and I

this radio.

Many thanks to W6NIA,NT6A,N5GE, AB7R for advice and
suggestions, but still no success. Finally went to Elecraft
Utility, did a update and turned the radio off.

What software were you using when the K3 was put into the
low power mode? If your software is using the K22 enhanced
command set and sets low power using the enhanced command
(PC###N where N=0) the KPA3 is disabled.

The solution is to use the same software to reset power to
more than 20 watts (PC0201) or use CONFIG:KAPA3 to enable
high power (PA nor).

Longer term, application software should avoid the enhanced
K2 CAT command mode or always use the set power command with
1 as the final digit (e.g., PC0101 to set 10 watts) to avoid
disabling the KPA3.

That is the answer Joe.  I was caught on this using K3 EZ program.  I was doing
a SWR plot on my antenna and it set it to low power and did not set it back.  I
had to look around to see what was going on but figured it out.  I hope that
gets fixed.

2009-04-30 Thread Matt Zilmer
I'm using FW rev MCU 3.11 / DSP 2.15, but a lot of revs back I saw the
K3 reset to LP from HP when a high SWR was encountered. Only noticed
this afterward [not watching the RF power meter at the time]. Had to
manually set CONFIG:KPA3 back to nor to get HP capability back.

I haven't seen this since, but it might be a bug. For my part, I just
thought it was operator error...

Jim,
If you have the power set above 13W it will say HP. Exit the menu and
change the Power setting to below 13W and it will say LP.
