Thanks Ed! Don’t know how this chain got so scrambled. I’ll run it be
Elecraft too!

2022-03-01 Thread Ed Cole
Tried what you suggested Gary. No joy. The upper limit with the PWR
knob remains at 0.8MW. I can adjust downward but not upward. Need to
get a good power meter on it and see what the actual output is. And,
I?ll try the low-level power calibration process and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Any others have any suggestions?

For accurate measurement of power at 1mw, the HP-432A Power Meter is
excellent. But probably Tried what you suggested Gary. No joy. The
upper limit with the PWR knob remains at 0.8MW. I can adjust downward
but not upward. Need to get a good power meter on it and see what the
actual output is. And, I?ll try the low-level power calibration process
and see what happens.

Thanks again.

For measuring mw level RF, the HP-432A Microwave Power Meter is
excellent and reads up to 10-GHz, which probably not needed by most who
read this reflector. They sell used at about $150, but the power sensor
and cord are hardest to find.

For most reading RF voltage across a 50-ohm dummy load with an
oscilloscope is good. Read the peak voltage and calculate the rms
voltage. Vrms = 0.7071*Vpk. Power = Vrms^2/50. Scope needs to be
rated for the frequency being measured.

One other note: I have found my K3 will drop power if the load is not
low SWR. Could the input impedance of the Q5 not be 50-ohms?

I assume the input is similar to the DEMI 432 transverter with a choice
of high power (up to 10w) or low power (down to -20mw). There is a
mini-pot for adjusting Tx drive on the pcb. The Q5 manual should have
installation and tune-up instructions that mention input power
requirements and drive adjustment.

Probably a call to Elecraft Service might help.

Reference pp 49 of the K3 manul. Procedure to calibrate the “LP XVERTER
WATTMETER” is presenter there. The “Power Meter” for the LP port is not a
power meter in the general sense…. You will need a scope or meter capable of
accurately measuring RF at the desired frequency..

Sounds like you should do the low-level power calibration using the K3 Utility.
For now, you can increase the maximum, up to 1.5 mW, and presumably get the
desired output.

[Elecraft] K3 drive level for Q5 Signal 432 Transverter

2022-02-26 Thread David Hourdequin
Using the Config Menu, I have set the drive level at the maximum for the
transverter at 1 MW. However, when I check the drive from the front panel PWR
knob it reads 0.8MW and I cannot adjust it any higher with the knob. Nothing I
do seems to change the the PWR knob drive level. I am running SSB on 432.095.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Tnx es 73,
