I’m embarrassed to admit how little I have used this radio.  It’s been
sitting in the box for over ten years.

Elecraft KX1 #1797 transceiver in like new condition with:

KXAT1 Automatic Antenna Tuner

KXB3080 30 and 80 Meter Adapter

KXPD1 Plug-In Keyer Paddle

Pelican 1060 Case

All manuals

Purchased at Dayton in May 2007, built in May and June of that year.
Recently checked out on the bench and on the air.  About 1.5w out with fresh
AA batteries; 3~3.5w out on 13.8v.  Everything appears to be working
correctly and properly – HOWEVER – since the radio is 16 years old and has
been sitting unused for over ten years, I am offering it as is with no

[Elecraft] KX1 for sale

Since acquiring a KX2, the KX1 has remained unused on the self. I don't 
think it's likely that it will ever see any use, so I've decided to sell it.


The KX1 is in excellent condition with no scratches on the case. It 
produces about 3.25 watts on a fresh set of alkaline batteries.


Included is the 80/30 option which has not been built or installed. I 
only ever operated 40 or 20 when I did use it.


I also have the KXPD1 paddle option which is also unbuilt and still in 
its plastic bag.


I might sell the options separately depending on whether someone wants 
just the KX1 or all of it.


I'm not sure what it's really worth. So if you're interested, please 
make an offer off-list.

 It's in excellent condition, has the ATU installed, also has the paddles.
 Don Wilhelm, W3FPR went thru it a few months ago and gave it a clean bill of 
health ! 
 While it was there, he built and installed for me the K6XX CW indicator kit 
which allows you to zero beat the station with the lamp installed on the KX1.
 It comes with the manual of course !
 I already have another KX1, and went and broke down and bought a K1, my third 
! Can't seem to stay away from the K1lol !
 So this one is really surplus to my needs, plus I need to put the money back 
in the bank I used to buy the K1lol !!

KX1 with 80/30m module and Auto-tuner installed, with manual.  S/N 01644,
bought for me by my XYL as a Christmas present in kit form. It displays 1 -
2 W output with 8 AA batteries (12VDC). Original owner/builder, very little
use. Most recent use was on Friday, 3/25 on 40m and 20m.  Stored in a
waterproof plastic container with foam inserts to keep it from being damaged
by being bumped and dry from rain/snow. Includes an 8-cell AA battery holder
and cable for 12 VDC, a slight boost in voltage from the 2x3-cell holder
internally. Also includes padded case. Batteries not included. Pix
available. $520 as purchased from Elecraft in kit form, already built and
working for $475 OBO (plus shipping).

It’s in a Pelican case (model 1200) with the plug-in paddle, an external

I no longer need the KX1. The serial number is 2500 and it is complete with the 
Elecraft mini paddle, ATU, battery tray and the 30/80 adapter. I did not do the 
build, but I think Don, W3FPR did. In any case, he did a checkup on it last 
year and pronounced it fit for duty. I will ship it (Conus) and absorb the

[Elecraft] [KX1] For sale, KX1 paddle kit, the KXPD1

I bought the KXPD1 thinking that I would use it on my KX1 but I can't bear the 
thought of giving up my Begali merely for the ease of portability.

So, it is for sale.  The kit has NOT BEEN assembled.  The only thing I did was 
the parts inventory (all is there) and it all pieces remain in the plastic bags 
as received from Elecraft.  Elecraft lists this for $69 but I will sell it for 
$35 shipped (I pay for postage) to any US mail location.  International buyers 
pay for postage as I have no idea how high that can go.

Finished building this KX1 a few weeks ago so it is essentially in brand new,

This is the fifth KX1 I have built...I like building them.it's great fun

Selling my newly completed KX1. 

Everything works great except at 13.0V the power out is about 2.5 watts and 
should be about 4.0 watts. Whomever wants to can figure it out. Don't have a 
wide selection of test equipment. 

Been thru the usual builders resources and eventually wound up going in a 
circle.

Built two K2's, one with all the accessories and a K1 in the past with very 
little problems and a host of the usual small stuff. Worn out from those!

I had disassembled my previously operational KX1 (SN854) in anticipation of
adding the KXB3080 option.  However I realized that it would be some time
before I could get around to it, and I felt like operating.  So I put it
back together, powered it up, and released the smoke. Examination showed
that a short section of V+ PCB trace just after the power switch had
vaporized. PCB traces make excellent fusible links. I measured the
resistance to ground from the far end of the trace.  It was 1025 Ohms.  By
now I had a pretty good idea what was going on. I repaired the trace, and
measured the same resistance at the power connector. So far so good.  I
powered it up outside of the case and all is well.  Now I'm real sure what's
going on.  I reassembled it into the case, and measured the resistance at
the power connector; 0.4 Ohms. Q6 was shorted to the case. I backed off the
screw for Q6 1/8 of a turn and the short goes away.  I examined the plastic
spacer and it does not seem deformed.  The insulating pad also seems fine.
I did not torque the screw to 20 foot pounds. I don't know what to do next.
All suggestions appreciated.

Paul,

Get the nylon screw.
If you already have the nylon screw, then examine the area on the case
around the countersink hole (top and bottom) for any burrs or pieces of
metal that may be tightening against the transistor tab when you tighten the
screw.

Sounds like a tiny metal burr is shorting the case of Q6 to ground.  
These are almost always at the screw hole.  Check the following:


  1. Make sure the screw itself is plastic; Elecraft will send you a
 new one free if it isn't.
  2. Pull off the insulated pad and use an Xacto knife from the inside
 of the cover to circle (swirl around at a 45 deg angle) the Q6
 mounting hole and remove any burrs.
  3. Using fine sandpaper, sand the area inside the case that the
 insulated pad covers to ensure it is perfectly flat, especially
 around the screw hole.


Replace the insulated pad and reassemble.  Very smart of you to use an 
ohm meter to alert you of potential smoke inhalation during power-up.

I'll add to Brian's comments that it does not always require a burr to
produce the short.

In some KX1s either the head of the screw is a tiny bit smaller or the hole
is a tiny bit larger, allowing the beveled screw head to reach through the
hole in the cover and thermal-conducting pad and touch the metal tab on the
transistor, causing a short. 

I fixed mine long, long ago by adding a second thermal-conducting pad.
Still, I'm very careful to check for a short whenever I reassemble it. But
in dozens of disassembly/reassembly operations it's never been shorted.
Others, with slightly smaller case holes or screws with a slightly bigger
head never had the problem. They were unable to create a short, even when
trying. 

The nylon screw is the really foolproof solution. That's why they are
supplied with all current KX1s.

Thanks to all who responded.
The archive provided a wealth of information on this well-known problem.
I spoke with Scott at Elecraft and he is sending me a nylon screw.
He told me that there had been a Builder's Alert on this problem in the
past, but he was also unable to find it on the web site. He told me it would
be reposted there, which I imagine will be of help to people with older
KX1's, especially second hand owners.

As always Elecraft shows that it's commitment to its customers is
unparalleled in the industry. Now where's the K3?

I built this KX1 after I built my K2. But I just don't operate it much 
at all. I prefer the K2 and my outdoor excursions did not happen as I 
thought they would. (Was a good excuse to convince the xyl that I needed

Hi, I have a partially completed KX1 for sale. Included is the following;

KX1 CW Xcvr - partially built kit
KXAT1 - internal auto tuner - unbuilt kit
KXB30 - 30M adapter - unbuilt kit
KXPD1 - Keyer paddle for KX1 - partially built kit

Since nothing is completed I cannot guarantee that it works ! I gave up on 
construction some time ago as it was getting too hard for me. Don't know if 
what I have already completed is good or not.

Originally the setup above cost $499 in total, I'm looking to sell everything 
as a package for $350 plus shipping. Payment via Paypal or USPS Money Order 
ONLY.

requirements as I have my K2 up and running.

The radio is in great condx and only used once ( on a recent trip to the UK).
