[Elecraft] Re: Time Change

2004-11-01 Thread Robert C. Abell

Phil,

I for one hope that our Governments never abolish daylight saving time.
What is so difficult with changing the clocks?

All one has to remember is Spring ahead, Fall back. UTC does not change.

Local farmers hate daylight savings time. The extra hour of sunlight in the
afternoon burns up their crops.

I like the fall-back time shift because it lets me work grayline just before
I leave for work during the winter!

And there is the key . UTC does not change and MFJ clocks that show
local and UTC are real inexpensive!

And now for the opposing view...

I would like to see DT abolished. In my opinion, it no longer serves any
useful purpose, if it ever did. Also, pity the poor clock/watch sellers who
typically have thousands of time pieces to adjust each time they have to
synchronize with the silliness.

I'm thankful that I only need to adjust a few clocks and my watch. The
clocks in most of the modern home electronic devices, such as VCRs, adjust
themselves, as do all of my computers.

By the way, the MFJ-121 atomic clock has dual 12/24-hour displays that are
large and easily readable, but both time displays have to be either 12- or
24-hour. I'd like to have UTC show 24-hour and local show 12-hour time. And
worse still, the clock auto adjusts for DT, but affects both times, so I
still have to compensate the UTC display on the change-over dates. Some of
my hand-written logs entries were off by an hour until I discovered the
problem.

As I recall, the back in the '70's when they didn't turn the clocks back their
was a concern, at least in the more populated areas, for the school kids being
out in the dark in the morning.

I thought if that this morning when, for the first time in a few weeks I could
see the kids walking to the bus stops as I drove to work.

 And yet another view -

I would like to see daylight time made permanent, as in year
 round, with
no semi-annual adjustment. I believe the vast majority of people
 (not
all, or course) prefer longer evening daylight hours, and if you
 really
think about it, Winter is when we really need some extra light in
 the
afternoon/evening. This was actually tried at least once, during
 the
1973 oil crisis, and it did result in some degree of energy
 saving,
although I don't know exactly how much. I clearly remember the
 year we
went to daylight time and did not change in the fall, and the
 longer
days in the Winter were really nice.

Of course, we all know that there is no free lunch, and the extra
sunlight in the afternoon comes at the expense of longer morning
darkness, but for many of us, it is a good trade.

In the summer time, up this way, we get 18-24 hours of sun,
 depending on
where you are, so daylight savings time isn't that big a deal. At
Prudhoe Bay, where the Alaska oil fields are, the sun comes up on
(roughly) the 20th of May and goes down on (roughly) the 5th of
 August -
and is up 24/7 between those dates. Weird. You can take a nap
 after
supper, wake up at 10:00, and literally not know, at least from
 looking
out the window, if you have had a 2 hour nap or are really late
 for work!

Of course, we could put the entire world on Greenwich time, and
 some
places would have noon at midnight, but people would get used
 to it,
 wouldn't they?
