Re: [Elecraft] USB vs RS232 for K3/P3

2019-08-25 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

The USB connection will allow you to eliminate your external soundcard
and the cables to the LINE IN/OUT jacks.
It will also eliminate any need for a USB to SERIAL adapter if you are
currently using one.

You will need to use the CBLP3Y cable between the K3 and P3 instead of
the RS-232 cables you are currently using - you said you have the
cables, but just checking to be sure you have that "Y" cable.

So you end up with only the USB cable, and the "Y" cable between the K3
and P3.

Your internal soundcard will identify as USB Audio CODEC, and the
internal USB to serial adapter will be assigned a COM port number by
your computer (much the same as a USB to Serial adapter would be).

Re: [Elecraft] USB to RS232 cable or adapter

2013-07-16 Thread Fred Smith
While searching for a new hub recently I came across one I had not seen
before. I had been using 2 7 port hubs but had ran out of ports on them, yes
I have a lot of things on the desk requiring several USB ports.

I was looking at the Manhattan web site as I had used them for some time
because of their Lifetime Warranty. It was there I found the USB Hub 28
ports total 14 plug in on the top and 14 on the sides. Each port has its own
lighted switch so that each port can be turned on or off easily. 4 of the
posts are USB3.0 the remaining 20 USB 2.0 your computer does need at least 1
USB 3 port to have them on the hub. I am currently using 18 of the ports and
finally able to have most all hooked up at one time.

The hub is extremely well built and works perfectly I wish I had found one
like a long time ago. It retails for $99 but I found mine online at
Amazon.com for $58 free shipping. It you need a large hub with switches to
turn ports on or off this is it and as always it has their Lifetime
Warranty.

Re: [Elecraft] USB to RS232 cable or adapter

2013-07-15 Thread Tommy
The below is a post I made to the N1MM Logger group and may be of some
interest here. For more detail information, copy the wa8lmf URL in the K3CT
post, into your browser.

I recently purchased 'my last PC' and it's running on Windows 8 64-bit op
system. This new PC, while it has a ton of bells and whistles, it, of
course, has no serial or parallel ports.

Based on John's post referencing the article by WA8LMF, I went to the Gearmo
web page and purchased two of their USA-FTDI2X USB 2.0 to RS-232 converters.
Even though I did not ask for it, I received my order the day after ordering
it! After removing the eight Com ports automatically loaded on this PC, I
configured the two converters for Com 1 through 4 and set up N1MM to
operate with my K3. These converters, USB input and two RS-232 DB9 outputs,
work excellent with my N1MM setup, both CW and RTTY operation is the same as
with my prior PC with internal serial ports. In addition, these converters
also work well with my K3 when I am QSO'ing using my old YPlog (QRQ) logging
program.

I would recommend these converters to anyone upgrading their PC that has no
serial ports.

[Elecraft] USB to RS232/DB9 adapter

2006-08-03 Thread J F
Hi Chuck,

I had similiar experiences with several USB adapters.
It seems to be an issue, not just with the K2, but
other devices as well.

Drivers may help, configuration is important as well.
On my laptop, the default com port was com11. Your
equipment might be looking for a device on a different
com address (ie N1MM looks for com1, but you can set
it for a different port).

Don's point is important to remember, you still have
to use the K2 DB9 cable to interface to the USB
adapter.

I also found many of the multiport USB devices were
useless (or more of a pain to use than they were
worth).

This is what I found that worked (except I can't use
it to send CW via N1MM) with the K2 and my computer:
Tripp Lite U209-000-R Serial Adapter - mini USB Type A
- DB-9 - male . Your mileage may vary ;o)

Mine is very loosely refered to as a laptop, is more

had problems with two different desktops. According to

Drivers may help, configuration is important as
 well.
On my laptop, the default com port was com11.

Re: [Elecraft] USB to RS232/DB9 adapter

2006-08-03 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

|I wonder if you laptop can deliver enough current? This is an important
| consideration that is often overlooked, some USB chipsets are feeble.

The USB cable that came with a recently bought Iomega external slim-line
hard drive had two PC USB port plugs to a single hard drive plug just in
case a single PC port couldn't deliver the current.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

[Elecraft] USB to RS232/DB9 adapter

2006-07-17 Thread J F
FWIW...

I purchased a reasonably priced Tripp Lite U209-000-R
Serial Adapter - mini USB Type A - DB-9 - male (U$20)
which controls my K2 fine using N1MM.

The only caveat I have with this is that it does NOT
key the rig (using the simple 2N/1KOhm resistor
interface) on CW. From what I hear this is not an
uncommon issue with many of the USB adapters.

Rather than pull my hair out any further, I bought a
K1EL WK2 kit. I've purchased two of his kits in the
past and have been very happy with them.

No interest in either company, just passing on my
experiences.

2006-07-17 Thread Joe-aa4nn

Hi Julius,
I couldn't get the COM output of the USB adapter
to key my rig using N1MM. Anyway, you are
better off with WK2 for excellent CW keying.

[Elecraft] USB to RS232

2004-12-04 Thread James T. Jim Rogers
I seem to remember an article on a neat little PIC project, a USB to
RS232
converter. I know there are a bunch out there for around $30 but I like to
tinker, OK? Anyone remember that one? I think it was in QST.
