Try putting a piece of paper towel between your ear and the headset. I find
that it makes it more comfortable when wearing headset for long periods of
time and it seems to keep things cooler.

Now I like that - I have a pair of BOSE Quiet Comfort 2 headphones and they
are extremely good, very comfortable etc - I fine they do tend to make your
ears a little hot though.

Well, since everyone else seems to be putting their oar in for what they
really want, I will to. I use headset/mic combos most of the time if I
operate SSB (not very often though). But it would be nice to not have to
use the headphones for a comfortable QSO. Problem is, a desk mike just adds
to the clutter on my desk. That premium space is already taken up by a
laptop (or keyboard), my paddle, my pencil/pen, paper, and most importantly
my coffee cup! Seriously, am I the only one who has to shift things around
in front of me while operating? And wouldn't a desk mike just add to the
problem?

I would like to see some kind of gooseneck type microphone (perhaps with the
"IC" element) that would easily attach and detach from the K3, or a K2.
Maybe some sort of brace or bracket that would clamp across the top of the
K3, and had some sort of quick release. It would have to be padded so as to
not mar the K3. The gooseneck would lock into some kind of clamp on top of
the bracket, and be a quick release type also. The gooseneck should
probably be approx. 24 to 30 inches or so long (maybe more) so it reaches
from the rig to, or near, the front edge of your desk so you can easily
speak into it. You could further adjust the distance by where you place the
bracket on the K3--either towards the front, or more towards the rear. Then
you could swing the microphone into position or out of the way, but it
wouldn't add to the clutter on the desk in front of you.

Tall order, right? Yeah, I know--I'm dreaming. And it really doesn't
respond very directly to Eric's question. But I'd buy something like this
if it were available. Maybe it already is somewhere. I don't keep up very
well with microphone stuff.

FWIW, I agree and its not a tall order, it's already available directly from
Heil. _www.heilsound.com_ (http://www.heilsound.com)

I prefer the flexible boom that looks like a piece of conduit, used on many
lamps and mirrors. There is also a vendor advertised in QST that sells mobile
components for mounting control heads that can be adapted to a mic, just get
the heil mic for handheld and mount it in a holder then you have 2 in 1
handheld or boom mount. The heil booms are not real flexible and base mounted.
The flex heads I have can be mounted using common electrical/plumbing supplies
and can be hung from above (check out the professional talk show stations)
or from a side panel. Also look at Heils professional line , not just the
Amateur Radio pages.

2007-12-29 Thread Kurt Pawlikowski

Jim,

I can think of a few good reasons, the first is "one stop shopping."
That is, convenience. The second is, if the radio manufacture caries a
compatible product, you are assured that it will be configured correctly
and have the same general quality and performance levels. And while yes,
you could go direct to the manufacture, it's sometimes nice to have that
little funky "E" on an OEM version of the same thing. Every time you
raise a Icon, Yaesu, Kenwood or other "branded" mike to use it, the one
thing you'll be reminded of is the manufacturer. I would expect that
none of them make their own elements. I think the advertising value of
an OEM microphone alone is worth the trouble.

Two reasons:

1) You can make one big order rather than a couple of smaller orders.

2) You are guaranteed that the unit you buy will work with your Elecraft rig.

Yes, you are right that it could be done that way, and I have thought about
that. But I do appreciate the suggestion. However, I would really like
something that is more portable and could travel with the K3. I consider
the K3 to be a very portable radio, and I intend to take it with me whenever
practical. I am thinking about something smaller and lighter than some sort
of desk attachment arrangement which would probably have a heavier gooseneck
as well. Kenwood, I think, makes a small desk microphone with a small
diameter gooseneck and small cartridge housing. I would like something
along that line if possible--small, lightweight, and easily transported.
Being able to attach it somehow to the rig seemed a good idea to me as it
could eliminate the need for a base or heavy table clamp arrangement.

Amen! Interesting to note that the operators of 'world class' contest
stations never appear to suffer from sore throats caused by shouting during
a contest period, while some other folk end up 'croaking'.

My Heil ProSet Plus headset allows my rigs to be driven to full output
without shouting, including an unmodified K2/100 #3255 without an external
audio preamp, and is comfortable to wear for long periods. The combination
of the HC5 mic element and 2.1 kHz transmitter filters breaks pile-ups
without having to use the HC4 mic element, at the same time receives
complimentary reports on audio quality. External acoustic noise has never
been a problem here.

How about a tiny interface box that simply accepts the two plugs
from the typical computer headset, with a ptt switch on it...and
maybe even four buttons to fire off the memories in the K3

( by then I hope Wayne has a way to plug such a remote memory switch

I course I do realize that all K3 owners could construct such an

A big hunk of the target market for the K3 is contest stations. Many
contest stations are making the move to the noise reduction headsets. I

As I already told Doug:

We use the "plain vanilla" version of the PA11-60.

RX is a standard stereo phone jack; you can plug it directly into the
front panel of the K3, TS-850, etc. The microphone connector is a "hard
to find" jack used in airplanes. We always replace the microphone jack
with something standard.

The microphone interfacing for the rig is also important, an example for
TS-850 can be found here:

(sorry about the German, but you should get the general idea).

The MH-2 certainly drags my K2 around with it. I have considered
changing the curly cable for a more flexible one and will do so when I

I wonder why Elecraft have not asked for a more suitable cable to be

Dear Eric,

My vote would be for the Pro Set Plus. I have used one fairly intensively for
upwards of 4 years, mainly for chasing ssb dx on 80m. The headphones are
sensitive and comfortable and most of the time I use the HC4 mic insert for its
penetrating qualities but I also use the HC5 for less demanding contacts. I'm
itching to use the Pro Set Plus with my K3, ordered with deposit on 11 May and
now getting tantalisingly close to shipment!

Re: [Elecraft] Which Heil Prosets should we carry?

I own the following Heil models:
* Pro Set Plus
* Pro Set QuietPhone
* Traveler Dual Side

I used to also own the Traveler Single Side phones but
sold them as they were very uncomfortable.

If you were to carry two models, I would suggest the
1. Traveler Dual Side -- for portable operator use, and
2. Pro Set QuietPhone -- for serious fixed operation

I also like my Pro Set Plus unit but find the noise canceling
feature of the QuietPhone very helpful both at home and on
DXpeditions. Also, the QuietPhone is more comfortable on
the head and ears during those long hours. For a few dollars
more you get a much better feeling headset, with noise
cancellation, and a good mic.

I first used one of these QuietPhones at K1TTT's station
for the ARRL DX contest. Within 5 minutes I knew I had
to order a set for myself. They were that much better than
my Pro Set Plus (IMHO).

For those times you don't want to carry the big heavy headsets
the Traveler Dual Side is my choice. They are comfortable when
working outside in the heat and perform well (both on the ears
and at the mic).

There will not likely be any consensus here (on anything!), but
my vote would be those two "higher-end" of the Heil offerings.

My 2-cents. Refunds upon request.

Re: [Elecraft] Which Heil Prosets should we carry?

2007-12-28 Thread David Yarnes
I'm sure you will get a bunch of answers to this question, and probably all
different! Personally, I endorse the choice you already made in supplying
the current Heil headset. It has the "IC" element in it, and that came
highly recommended to me by several users who I think are fairly
knowledgeable. I think the Pro Set Plus would be a possible alternative,
but I really wonder if it is that beneficial since the K3 has the built in
equalizer. Seems to me you could probably replicate most or all of the
beneficial effects the HC4 element generates just using the equalizer.
Isn't that true? Haven't tried it, but that would be my guess.

I'm not much on desk mikes (they get in the way of my paddle!), but lots
of folks are. I rather think if you are looking for something to expand
your line of options, a good desk mike would perhaps be the right answer. I
don't know that you need to offer another headset option, unless it would be
something like the Heil Traveler, which is smaller and lighter than the Pro
Set.

Eric, my suggestion is that you put together some sort of survey type
questionnaire--doesn't have to be complicated. But if you poll folks on
what their favorite mike or headset is and why, you might get a better
picture of what really appeals to them. I'd make the questions "open ended"
so that you can get some real input. Takes a little more time to sort
through the responses, but I think you get better input that way. That's
sort of what you did with your email, but I think a little more direction as
to the responses you need would be better. Your question really only asked
folks to consider the HC4 and HC5 elements (a "closed ended" approach). If
that's really all you want to consider offering, then I suppose that's fine.
But you might find that a niche exists for something entirely different.

I have and regularly use the ProSet+. The combination of HC4 and HC5 makes
the headset versatile. The ear pieces hurt after a long session.

Elecraft would do well to offer a new headset with ear pieces that don't
rest on the ears, but around them, with the equivalent of HC4 and HC5.

The ProSet ear pieces are not bad.

My vote is HC5. I have the HC4 and it comes out sounding "pinched" on

If I want the DX sound I can adjust the TX equalization on the K3 using
the HC5. But it won't work as well the other way around because the HC4
eliminates lows to start with and the equalizer can't create sounds that
the mike didn't pass along.

Re: [Elecraft] Which Heil Prosets should we carry?

2007-12-28 Thread Larry K1UO

My vote would be for the Proset with H4 element for Contesting/DXing use.
Second would be the Proset Plus what contains both the HC4/HC5 elements but
is a bit heavier and more tiring to wear for long periods.
(consider the Heil footswitch also!)
Most of all thanks for asking.

[Elecraft] Which Heil Prosets should we carry?

2007-12-28 Thread Dave G4AON

Eric

There is a lack of a desk microphone for the Elecraft range... Doesn't
have to be Heil, but something elegant to go with the K3 would surely
sell well.

Its not practical for us to carry them all, but I'd like to add at
least one or two of the more popular versions to our product list.
Personally, I am not a fan of the Proset Plus, I find it uncomfortable.
The simple proset with an HC5 element is what I use for contest and DX
work. From the shack I prefer to use the Goldline GM-5 giving me the
choice of broadcast or DX elements. Of course thia all suits my voice.
However the Goldline/K3 combination seems to be one of those sweet
combinations in life.

Hi,

Mine is a Proset Plus, so it has both HC4 and HC5. This is a "no choice"
but in fact i use them both. A good solution. But as i already have one
and try to take care ot if, i won't be a buyer...

Pro-Set Plus (with both the HC4 and HC5 elements) gets my vote.

The standard Pro-Set only has a life expectancy of about 1 year in my shack
before they tend to fall apart! The Pro-Set Plus has out-lived my previous 2
Pro-Sets by a couple of years and is still going strong. Then again I have 4
kids under 10 who enjoy playing in the shack, so my conditions may be a bit
extreme!

Re: [Elecraft] Which Heil Prosets should we carry?

2007-12-28 Thread Bill W5WVO
I think the best overall ProSet is the single-element HC5. The HC4 element is
good for busting pileups, but you should be able to make an HC5 sound like an
HC4 by judicious adjustment of the K3 TX equalization. For this same reason, I
don't think the ProSet that contains both HC4 and HC5 elements with a small
switch is necessary either. I have had many unsolicited "great audio" comments
using my HC5 ProSet with a Kenwood transmitter.

On the K3, can you switch between two TX equalization profiles with a single
knob-tap or similar?

Eric,

I'm going to pass on the Heil Proset headsets and let the dx/contest ops
share their "wants" with you. I'm a ragchewer and net op and this is what I
wish you could provide as an option:

1.) A desk mike.
2.) A matching power supply/speaker...with a quality+ speaker.

I hope you can come to the Charlotte, NC Hamfest with the K3 on March 8 & 9!

I get glowing reports on my K3 audio with the HC5 element. It would be
very nice to have a K3-compatible plug-n-play desk mic with the HC5 element.

Also, I've had a bit of trouble finding 8-pin foster mic plugs. This
might be a nice thing for Elecraft to stock.
