2023-07-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Kevin,
You were good on 20 meters with some deep QSB but OK copy. Then we got whacked
by the sun pretty hard between nets and the story changed on 40 meters. I could
hear you at first but your signal was below the noise peaks so your CW was
getting chopped up and nearly uncopyable.

Hoping for better next week!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-05-26 Thread kevin

Good Morning,

I appreciate the pleasant propagation report you imagined for me.
The critters were a nice touch.  No QRN without QSB sounds like living
in RF paradise.  I am consistently amazed at net activity; only once
have I called a net to no response. Propagation was terrible on a major
holiday.

I have been calling for check ins for nearly 21 years.  The
experience has been edifying and instructive.  I have lost track of how
many antennas I have used.  They last only a few years due to heavy snow
fall or high wind.  From resonant dipoles to doublets to 1/4 wave
verticals to an inverted Y which works rather well.

I meet quite a variety of individuals.  Each week I learn a little
more about each of you.  After twenty years I have a pretty good idea of
who each of you are and your weekly activities.  I stress giving
complete signal reports, but I hear many more details about each of your
lives, or a quick weather report.  Very rarely we talk about our rigs or
antennas.  I think it is enough to know we are both on the air using CW
as a mode of communication.

I doubt I am the only person who dreams in CW :)  While I am not a
hard core contester I do test my mettle now and then.  In the days
following I hear faint CW in any rhythmic sound.  The interesting fact
is: once I 'lock in' to an op's rhythm the code part goes away and I am
in a conversation with them.  However, if you slow down too much I have
to pick up a pencil for decoding purposes.

An interesting aside: many weeks I get more email about my
announcements and reports than I do actual check ins.  Some of them are
from folks who are called away for one reason or another, but the lion's
share is from folks who comment on my writing.  You never can tell what
will interest a person :)

Most of all I appreciate the forebearance with which the Elecraft
crowd has treated me.

Thank you all for your continuing support.

Thanks for checking me in Kevin. It was my first time on a CW net and I was
nervous, relying on Text Decode on my K4D, etc. Conditions were as weird as
they were on the 20M SSB net at 1800 - one way strong - reverse weak. I could
barely copy you. On 40M I listened around for 10 minutes but the TN QSO party
dominated and I heard nothing from you. I hope to continue checking in! Thanks

The difference an ocean makes... We (at almost 52 degrees North in IO80)
have had temperatures over 20C in the last few days.

Propagation has been variable, though. I did manage a fair number of
SOTA chases over the weekend, but there have been a few radio black-outs
thanks to solar flares in the last few days. There was one reported at
around 2330Z yesterday, which is presumably the one that wiped out the
40 metre Net. There's been another reported at 0748Z this morning...

Good Evening,

Conditions were as predicted: low noise, weak signals. What I had
not expected was the depth of the QSB. S7 or 8 one moment to S2 or
below the next. Lower noise helped me dig out weaker signals. Forty
meters was its usual self - changing within a minute. For some reason
the sun has taken a vacation.

However, there were reports of rain, smoke, and fog. My brother
told me of the smoke in southern Wisconsin. I had not been paying
attention to the fires in British Columbia. The wind shifted a few days
ago, now coming from the southeast. This has kept the cooler clouds off
shore but aimed the smoke from California and southern Oregon at me. A
medium orange sun, with scratchy eyes and a sore throat.

Hello Kevin;

Just saying thanks and I agree the QSB was crazy!!!

I am wondering if you or others have tried to use APF on the Elecraft radio to
pull out weaker CW signals from the noise.
I've tried it a few times on my KX3 but wonder if I am setting it up correctly.
I'm not sure it would have helped with the QSB as it was today.

I'm wondering if anyone created a YouTube video on using APF to pull out weaker
CW signals on a KX3?

Thanks!

Snip signal was on and then off again with no signs of fading or
strengthening. Just on and off. We seemed to have found the time when
40 meters wakes up then settles down a little. I'll leave the 40 m net time at

One of these years, perhaps, HF conditions will pick up to the point
where my KX3 might just enable me to manage a Net check-in from this
side of the Atlantic. Not yet, though. I have, on one or two occasions
this year, just about almost managed to hear (maybe) the occasional SOTA
activator operating from a summit on the eastern side of North America,
but none yet clearly enough for me to work, though other operators in
Europe (with better antennas and better Morse than me) have succeeded.

Heh. Given, for the most part, G* calls were issued first, and M* (and
2*) calls only came along (for amateurs, at least) when the G* space was
full, I'm not sure there's ever been a path to upgrade from M to G.
There are chunks of the G* space that used to be "class B licences"
(without HF access), but that distinction died with the Morse Test.
There have been cases where folk have taken over a call from a
silent-key relative, but they're unusual. For the most part, calls are
never re-isssued.

Recently the regulator has relaxed (or possibly "confused") conditions a
bit, and released some calls that were previously marked as "not to be
isssued" into the pool, but changing your call when you're not also
upgrading your licence is, at best, tedious.

At best, these days, the only assumptions you can make are that
Foundation licence holders will have an M?3*, M?6* or M?7* (where the ?
is the regional modifier) call, Intermediate licence holders will have a
2* call, and all the rest will have Full licences of some vintage. Even
then, there are some short (1- or 2-letter suffix) calls that break the
pattern.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_signs_in_the_United_Kingdom and one
or two other places try to make sense of the whole muddle, but just when
it seems they've nailed it some other confusion comes along...

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2020-07-05 Thread Bill Frantz
I had the same issues with the SSB nets. (The CW nets come
during the dinner hour, and today I was at a family picnic dinner.)

On 20M I could hear over half of the stations, some at ESP
levels, but only Steve, WM6P managed to hear me and relayed my
checkin. This was running 100W from my K3 to a 2 element wire
beam. I was hearing Eric, WB9JNZ at 55 to 57, but he couldn't
hear me. I've always assumed that being in Chicago, he has a
fairly high local noise floor. I'm out in the country and can
hear quite well.

40M was a total bust. I could barely hear anyone, and no one
could hear my 100W to a dipole.

The K3 and the two antennas worked well during Field Day, so I
put it down to propagation. The question on 20M is why I could
hear well and others couldn't hear me. It may be worthwhile to
swap out the 20M antenna for another one and see if that
improves things.

Of course, on Field Day, I did most of my Qs on CW or digital --
two points per Q vs. one after all. And, CW and digital can
punch through when conditions aren't good enough for SSB.

Good Evening,

Both bands were weak, with noise and QSB. But I was moderately
successful given the conditions. One strange thing, NO8V was stronger
than either K6XK or K4TO. That's just not normal :) I did hear some
ESP code on 20 meters but not well enough to convince me it wasn't just
in my head. It happens now and then. Often when I'm working and a
squeaky fan is on.

I sat down to start the 40 meter net and I listened for a while. To
nothing. Not one sound. I looked out the window and found the antenna
still up. I checked the switches and the antennas were both online.
There was just no noise at all on 40 meters. Two weeks ago that meant I
worked no one. I called CQ and K6PJV popped up; weakly, but there.
Dale was spending the day inside where it's cool with his KX3 by his side.

On the next call I copied M0YK M0YK M0YK. I stared at the paper
trying to figure it out. With code this good why hasn't he upgraded to
a G call? Then W0YK called again so I could hear the initial dit :) I
gave Ed a 329 and he proceeded to tell me he was on K4 number 2. The
second K4 to check in to ECN and it's number 2? The first K4 was when
K6KR checked in last year. I don't think I got his SN but I am sure
#001 is in Wayne's hands. The K4s sound good guys.

Brian checked in with a weather report much like mine. He lives
closer to the ocean but the Pacific has been socked in for the last few
weeks. The clouds just comes inland a bit farther up here. He was
working on a clean sweep of the 13 colonies contest. He needed a couple
more on CW.

K4TO - Dave - KY

Writing parallel code is getting easier. Now to learn how to tune it
for best performance. If done well you can achieve teraFLOP
performance. If done poorly you can do worse than brute force on a
CPU. Maybe another two weeks of study to mount the initial learning curve.

Until next week 73,

Thanks Kevin!

I tried to answer. But the signal was buried pretty deep. I think we are
just too close to one another.

It also seems like the QRM starts up as soon as the net begins, that didn't
help.

I like trying to pull you out of the noise with APF on the KX3. Pretty cool

Good Evening,

Twenty meters had very loud QRN. A steady roar of about S6 with some QSB.
I have received five emails so far complaining of QRM blocking my signal. It
did make sending decent code hard too. For the last few weeks CQs start up
when I call the net and continue throughout them.

Forty meters was different. When I first tuned to 7047.5 kHz I thought
something was wrong. Twenty meters had been full of QRN while forty meters was
dead quiet. I turned back to twenty meters to check and it was still noisy.
When I did hear stations it was like I was inside a box of cotton batting. Our
Christmas sunspots are only a memory. The solar wind has slowed and the
auroral oval is close to the magnetic pole. If we are not at the bottom of
this sunspot cycle we have to be very close. More QRM but I did get a relay
station to call them and gained another few stations for the list too. Thanks
Brian.

The people I worked on 20 meters all mentioned the word blizzard. 3
degrees F came up a few times too. Then we compared our winter experiences :)
I once went XC skiing in Wisconsin at -65 degrees F. It was not windy. It was
also not very pleasant. Normally skis ride on a layer of water created by the
pressure of the skis. Not this night. My skis were acting like I was on a
layer of sandpaper. Within twenty minutes I was back next to the woodstove.

Until next week stay warm folks,

Hello Kevin;

Thank you for the managing the Elecraft CW net!I have been listening for
the past several months but am not able to hear you.
I'm wondering if an Elecraft CW operator that has a good location and antenna
might volunteer to be a CW relay station with you?
Similar to the Elecraft SSB net.

I think keeping it very simple for example just send their Call, WX, State to
the relay station after Kevin completes his check-ins.
Ie for me, after I hear the Relay Station call, with QSP? I would send the
following: QSP de WM5F WX Snow ID
The relay station would pass WM5F Snow ID on to Kevin.Kevin would
acknowledge with a simple QSL.

So is anyone interested to try it this Sunday? Is there a better way to
conduct a relay message for a net?

Much Regards,

Good Evening,

The Elecraft CW Net is a directed net. There is no need to call CQ to get
my attention; my location allows me to hear very well. Just wait for me to
call for check-ins then send your call or a part of it as a hail sign. This
allows me to gather two to three stations and work them in order. Once I have
cleared my list I call for more check ins. I repeat this until I get no
response three times. If you call CQ during the net I'm not sure what you
intend. Are you trying to get my attention while I am working other operators?
Or are you calling your own net? If you wait for my call up sequence and
respond when I send your call sign it is much easier to direct the net.

Twenty meters was loud. Jupiter was mentioned as a culprit. With all the
clouds here I have a hard time keeping track of the moon let alone the planets.
The QSB was slow but Roy had a fast flutter on top of his signal. The solar
flux index has gone up from where it had been stuck for so many months. From
69 a few months ago to 74 today. A bit of solar wind is enough to support
these bands for another week. I know a good contest lights up the ionosphere
too.

Forty meters was less noisy with slow QSB. Copy was very good. Most of the
talk was about snow or rain. A few rare folks actually have sunlight. Here
there is about two inches of sloppy snow. The wind is rising too so I better
put antenna work on my list.

Until next week stay warm 73,

   Kevin. KD5ONS

There have been a small handful of high latitude, Cycle 25 polarity
spots show up.  Most haven't lasted long enough to get #'s assigned but
it's a good sign.  All you ever want to know about the sun can be found

sun has thrown something at the earth.  Enough of it to cause

Hi Kevin, A fun experiment. You were S3 at peaks with S3 urban noise.
All I could pull out was your pattern. Sending my call to match your
pattern. Ken, W0CZ, was only copy-able signal with 579 at peaks.

Station on this end, K2 at 15W with Ground Plane 19 foot vertical.

I have had help though.  N0SS, Tom Hammond (SK), was instrumental in its
format.  Many others have sent critiques and suggestions over the
years.  If only there was a knob on my K3 to improve conditions :(  But,
with time, even the sun will come around again.

Thank you Dwight and to everyone who has ever checked in to ECN.

Good Evening,

My ears are still ringing and it has been over an hour since I got done
with the second net. At the end I was trying to invent calls out of the noise.
A solar stream is hitting the earth right now causing lots of noise and QSB.
A few signals were ESP to S6. Luckily the ESP portions were short. Most
signals were fairly good copy given the fading and pervasive roar. On forty
meters K4TO got chopped up quite rudely. It took a few repeats to make sure I
had him.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report (OT now)

2019-03-21 Thread kevinr

Hi Knut,

No, I found the lyrics applicable to my life; the aria has been
running through my head for the last two days.  I have been very busy on
a project with lots of long sleepless nights. Eighteen months so far and
at least one more to go.  But when this is done life will dawn and I
will win.  I did skip over the Princess's part of the aria

By the way, the snow is almost gone.  After a few days of bright sun
and high 60 degrees that water is now in the Willamette.  The pileated
woodpeckers are back making a racket but few other birds are taking
advantage of the newly exposed soil.  I expect to see the deer and
grouse return as the undergrowth springs to life.

2018-12-16 Thread Dave Sublette
Hi Kevin,

There is a good reason I was on the 160M vertical on 20. It was the
antenna I could hear you best on. :-) Right now, my rotating tower with
the 40M Moxons is pointed at 164 and I won't turn it because I have a
trolley cable attached at 125 feet, getting ready to install a four element
OWA yagi. The weather has to cooperate. On 40, I was using the Moxons,
even though they were 180 degrees from you. 18 dB down is still a good
signal :-)

Always good to hear you.. I will try to make it as often as possible. But
I will be traveling for the next two Sundays and won't be on the net.

Hi Kevin,
I listened for you on 20m but heard, maybe an ESP dit or two. Roy had a big
signal here, S9+ when I moved the beam around to him. Heard a few of the other
check-ins too. Wayne was about S5 and watery with refraction over the hill.

A dinner party took me away for the 5 o'clock session.

That's all the news from HMB. See you next week.

Good Evening,

Twenty meters was quiet and weak with moderate QSB. Forty meters was such
that none of the people I called could hear any of the others. At times I was
trying to work three signals at once. But even though the order may be off we
got it done. Except for dragging in WG7?? Forty meters was noisy from a
number of sources, QSB was higher, and the band was weak except to WM5F and
W6JHB. However, when forty meters gets to this stage the next few nets are
usually better.

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed the transition into fall.
Grass is turning brown. The sun is setting noticeably earlier, the
hummingbirds are thinning out, the salmon berries are almost gone, and the
foxgloves have gotten the the very last blossom. It's time to start gathering
wood before the winter rains make the tracks too muddy.

Hopefully they'll find a way to put out all the fires we have out west. I
read this article earlier today proposing a concussive means of separating
flame from fuel.
https://warontherocks.com/2018/08/shocking-wildfires-into-submission-a-proposal/
Whatever helps them gain control of these firestorms is OK with me; even if it
is loud.

WG7(X?) pieced together from a number of folks but no response on call.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-10-29 Thread marvwheeler
Kevin:

I have listened for several weeks and today was the first time that I could
hear your transmission on either 20 or 40 meters. I am sure it is not your
problem since I am using a vertical and have a very high local noise level.
Yes, I live about 0.25 miles from the Pacific and elevation here is 6 feet.

I hope to improve the signal on 40 meters this week> I am going to be putting a
terminated folded dipole with 90 feet of wire on each leg fed through a 9:1
balun and terminated with a 450 ohm noninductive resistor. I should be able to
get the center up about 45 to 50 feet. If nothing else I hope it will improve
the my noise where I can copy weaker signals. I sure hope so.

Thanks for your patience and hope to check it again.

Hi Marv,

I was copying you between S3 and S7. From what I could find on a map you
live at or near sea level. I live at 2000 feet which seems to be out problem.
The mountain I live on blocks a direct path between us so our only path is
straight up and down. I was just outside thinking about how to make an antenna
which would be better for those folks who live in Washington & Oregon. I have
a doublet at 80 feet with one lobe pointing into Alaska and the other into the
southeast.

 Thanks for the persistence.

  Kevin.

Happy to relay you in, Marv. Yeah, you're a little close for both bands. I have
the same problem on 20m. Most of the time Kevin is ESP here in northern CA on
20m.

Yep Kevin has good ears. Sometimes he is plagued be QRN but even then usually
pulls us through.

Welcome to the net.

By asking for relays I was able to check in on the Elecraft Nets on both 20 and
40 meters today. I was unable to hear Kevin on 20 meters but could tell he was
transmitting on 40 but his signal was at my noise lever (which is high}. Kevin
must have a quite location because he was able to copy me running a 100 watts

From So Cal, around the same time as the net (1935-2300z), I worked an

the same amount of information. Could have worked 20-30 W/A/N/Ks or the
same number of JA's instead. All on a K2 (sn 567) on JT65A running 5

Kevin,

When I was a kid walking with my grampa on a beautifully sunny day between the
rows of cornstalks in his backyard, often he'd turn to me and say, in Spanish,
It's gonna rain. I would ask him how he knew that, and he would point to his
knees. His joints apparently could tell him that things weren't quite right.

Before my Dad died last year, he had told me, Something is wrong with these
sunspots. They aren't normal, and darned if he doesn't seem to have been
right.
Maybe it was his joints, but these sunspots just don't seem to have the oomph
that they should. There are plenty of sunspots visible right now, but they
can't
kick up the solar flux to save their lives. In fact, the sunspot number has
been
nearly equal to the solar flux, which is highly unusual.

Depends on what you class as 'many spots'. Most of them are minute
specks and hardly visible to the eye. I use http://www.solarham.com/
which seems to give more accessible information than spaceweather.

Note that the current sunspot number of 67 does NOT mean there are 67
spots. There are at present 27 spots in 4 groups - 4x10 + 27 = 67 -
with most of them in one sprawling group 1247. The K index is shown as
3, which is not good, and the solar wind speed is increasing, another
bad sign.

I did have some fun in the IARU contest over the weekend, but not that
much in the way of DX worked. Yes, there are times when I look outside
to see if the antenna is still up...

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for July 10th 11th, 2011

2011-07-11 Thread Merv Schweigert
Its been kept a secret for a few years now but is bound to come to light,
its been found that during a weekend with high activity, such as a contest
all the K3s that are on the air suck the RF from the bands,
Everyone using the K3 is searching for every stray smidgen of RF out
there and as we all know if a K3 is tuned to a signal it extracts a
certain amount of energy from that signal, thus when there are many
K3s active and tuned to these weak signals there is almost no RF
left to extract for others.
Thats why you hear the comments my K3 hears signals others do not
etc. They can be called RF suckers in one sense, the more k3s active there
are the worse the propagation or conditions will become.
You may have noticed in the past few years since the introduction of the
K3 that conditions have not improved and in fact seem to be getting
worse, perhaps in correlation to the number of K3s in use?
Elecraft is working at fever pace to try and come up with some solution
to this problem, and firmware is in testing stages for the K3 to transmit
a very low level signal back on the air to replace the RF that it has
sucked out. So standby when you hear conditions improving you know
that the test have been successful and E will shine again with new and
futuristic developments in the hobby.
So far it does not appear there are any lawsuits over the removal of so
much RF from the spectrum, but it is suspect they may be forthcoming
by other radio manufacturers who are undated by calls their radios are
not receiving as well.
The retransmit module will be a small daughter board that will fit in the
K3 with no problem and will be minimal charge. Those not installing the
new update will be subject to being called signal hogs and signal suckers
and if found participating in contests will be disqualified.

2011-07-11 Thread Gary Gregory
I can report as a FT for the 'new' RF TX board (KTXRF3) that in a recent
contest we were told we were the only station that could be heard on the
bands. It appears to be working well and maybe a tweak or two to the FW is
all that is required prior to production.

You mean Sun? Kevin calls the 20m net at 2200Z on 14050 +/- and the 40m
net at 2400Z on Sundays [or Z Monday if you don't believe in 2400

Oh well, maybe he won't be on next week and life will go back to normal.
On my walk after the aborted 40 meter net I found the new tower poking

the crow flies or 1 mile if I drive. They have been working very long days

not see their progress. Looks like they will be hanging the antennas soon.
Propagation on 20 meters was very good into Michigan and Indiana but not

There was no 40 meter net because I was informed on the air to stop
announcing it. I went QRT shortly afterward. Since I did not want to get
into an argument I thought it better to simply shutdown and go for a walk.
Hopefully, next week my nemesis will be elsewhere and I can continue as I
have been doing since 2002. One of the legs of the amateur radio service is

I could copy Tom on 20, but couldn't break the pileup trying to check in.
He might have answered my AC, but there were so many tail enders on top
of his replies that I couldn't tell. He was about QSA4. From here it sounded
more like a single-frequency DX pileup than a net, Hi!

The phone rang after about a dozen tries. From the short list of check ins,
it sounds like he didn't hear a lot of stations, but that's 20 meters at
times...

Wasn't able to get on for the 40 meter net.

Hi Kevin,

Remember that today was the solstice. The days will get longer now, keeping
20M open longer. When you first started to call at Z, you were readable,
but you dropped as the net time progressed. I copied you 339 deteriorating to
229 fairly quickly. I may have been stronger because I had the quad pointed
north at you and drove the K3 into an SB-200 at about 500W out. I was busy at
0300Z so that I couldn't try 40M. Let's see how it goes. Keep up the good

Good evening,
Happily there were a few folks I could hear. One for each net to be exact.
It got to the point where I checked the antenna a few times after I had already
checked if it had survived the storms. Yes, it is still there and there is not
much ice on it either. I also programmed the CQ message into the rig so I
could read while the radio was calling. This has never happened to me before.
I don't know what the bands are doing because I could hear people on both of
them before I started the net. Is everyone off doing things? I may be the
only one home alone on a Sunday night. But some of you write that you only
read my announcements and reports :) I am sure Eric would say something if we
did not have an Elecraft net associated with my weekly epistles so something
needs to change. Should we eliminate one of the bands? Move the times? Or
should we get someone else to run them? Any input would be of interest.

   On to the lists =

   On 14050 kHz at z:
NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826

   On 7045 kHz at 0300z:
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K3 - 657

Both of these stations were 599 to me but both gave me a 339 in return. It
is very strange that I can hear an Oregon station so strongly on 20 meters.
Pete is normally pretty strong to me on 40 meters so this is not unusual. I
wonder what sort of odd propagation is occurring tonight. I hope it fixes
itself before the Tuesday and Thursday night Fox hunts though. I would like to
get at least one of the four foxes.
The weather has calmed down. I got a little freezing rain, then a little
sleet, and then snow for the rest of the day. Currently there is no snow
falling but that is due to change. Luckily the winds are very mild. Last
night they were gusting so there are bits of fir tree all over the snow. My
stairs are mostly buried. The top of the snow is over the third step so I must
tread lightly and count steps on my way down. Fortunately, if I fall the snow
will bouy me up.
Until next week have a very Merry Christmas and stay warm, dry, and well,

Good Evening,
The bands were not being helpful tonight. On twenty meters I was able to
gain a few checkins but they were mostly 'local' (OR, AK, and CA). UA0IT is
probably not local :) [In fact Andy is local, he lives in Magadan.] I'll find
out when I can use the Internet again. Right now I have no telephone, it has
been out since around noon. The last few days it has been intermittent at best
but mostly down. Verizon has been promising to replace the equipment further
down the mountain for over a year but they are still employing a temporary,
used, replacement trailer. The latest news is they will put a cell tower in on
the top of the mountain (about 500 yards away). Maybe I will get better
service from that. I have never used a cell phone but hope there may be a way
to improve my Internet connection from its current 24 kB/second to something a
little faster and more reliable. One can only hope. Pat and I grew used to
our convenient DSL hookup when we lived in Albuquerque. I did most of my grad
work at home because my equipment was better and the Internet connection was
faster than what I had in the ECE department. My CS grad work had a separate
account and was the fastest on campus. But, then, they were hooked to the
fastest parallel computer in the world (at least a few times a year).
However, the forty meter net was better and Tom was able to hear me and help
me. QSB was rampant so I could not dig a few out which he was able to work.
While Tom was NCS I kept hearing CQs on frequency from another three stations.
One in Alaska and the other two were in 4 land. They would fade out and Tom
would come back. While I was listening prior to the first net twenty meters
sounded very good with all the contesters banging away. I did not hear the QSB
but, then, there exchanges are much shorter than ours. My first QNI was
obviously taking part in said contest because he likes these activities (WS7L).
He also happens to be a K3 owner and a fellow VE person. I was surprised to
be able to work NS7P directly. Normally he is out of my ground wave and much
too close for skip. Tonight I could hear him on both bands fairly well but a
little better on twenty.
Once again KL7CW, Rick in Palmer, Alaska had the best signal. Seems odd
that an Alaskan station running QRP power levels would hit Oregon so well but
there seems to be some sort of duct which assists his signal. There are other
AK stations I hear regularly which are quite strong. Propagation still seems
like magic to me; I can never quite tell what is going to happen until I start
calling.

   On to the lists =

   On 14050 kHz at z:
WS7L - Carl - OR - K3 - 486 QNI #5!
KL7CW - Rick - AK - KX1 - 798
UA0IT - Andy - Magadan - RU
K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642
NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826

   On 7045 kHz at 0300z:
N0SS - Tom - MO - K3 - 008 ** QNI #290 **
W3TMZ - Jack - FL - K3 - 1169
AB9V - Mike - IN - K3 - 398
K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642
W4SEC - Pete - FL - K2 - 5813
W6ZH - Pete - CA - K3 - 657
NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826 QNI #10!!
W0CZ - Ken - ND - K3 - 457
W0JFR - John - CO - K3 - 994
WB5BKL - Nick - TX - K3 - 231
K7SJ - Roger - WA - K3 - 75
W0NTA - Dick - CO - K3 - 1208
N0AR - Scott - MN - K2 - 4866
W1BPJ - Terry - CO - K1 - 1800
KL7IDA - Bill - AK

I hope there are no errors in the above lists but memory fades with time and
I may have missed a relay during the 'interesting' propagation we were having
last night ;) If there are any corrections or fills necessary please email
them to me. We are due for a solar stream on the 3rd which after its initial
interference should perk things up a little.  But propagation is an odd thing;
one can never foretell its effects. I am sorry for the delay in getting this
report posted but between phone problems and working and chores it did get
pushed back a little.
Until next week stay warm and stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Now a question to you all, check ins and prospective check ins alike: how
fast should we run the net? A few years ago Tom and I agreed to have me limit
my speed to 20 wpm while he varied his speed both up and down. Lately Tom has
been recuperating while I run the nets by myself. I have been maintaining a
steady 20 wpm character rate since about two years ago. When necessary I add
space between each character to slow down. Since I enjoy meeting new operators
all the time I do not wish to scare anyone off by running too fast. However,
when we use 'hail signs' it is difficult to determine a preferred sending speed
of the check in operator. Please feel free to break me and send QRS if you're
not copying me very well. I will add spaces as necessary. However I can't
slow down too much without making a ton of errors. My fingers get all tangled
up and I just plain lose it :( It appears some discussion is in order. A
little discussion may be on topic for the Elecraf
t Reflector but if it gets to be too much just send me the comments and I will endure the flames :) Eric has been known to let a lively discussion last a few days before he asks it to end. A few days worth may be enough to decide what we are to do for the future. Thank you for any input you wish to send. Any errors in the above lists are attributable to me. Please send me the corrections and I will fix the mess I've made. Now to get to my other computer and work on it until Sunday evening is done. Thank you very much for the interest and for your input.

   Until next week stay well,

I'm a bit amazed at ECN. There isn't any real traffic as in an NTS
net [don't know if they're even around anymore], just a bunch of
stations checking in, often with a wx report. Yet I find myself
reserving 2300Z on Sundays to check in and listen through the net as
often as I can.

During the day, I'll work a few QRS [and often QRP] stations around
14040. A number of them are running Elecraft rigs, the K1 probably
being the most common followed by K2's. These would all be candidate
QNI's to ECN, but the current code speed is probably out of their
league, at least until they have the chance to practice more.

FWIW, I'd take a clue from ARRL. They run bulletins at 18 WPM. Run ECN
at 18 WPM character speed, and maybe 12-15 WPM net sending speed so QRS
ops can at least pick enough out to know what is going on. QRS to or
close to the speed of the caller, much like Tom does. Making ECN more
inviting for slower new folks seems like a win-win to me. More
participation, good practice for those working on their code speed. My
code speed is well above 15 WPM, but I would have no problem at all at
12 - 15 WPM if it would encourage more Elecrafters to QNI ECN.

Maybe one-character hail signs aren't such a good idea. I'm guilty of
that. Makes it hard for Kevin to really gauge the caller's speed.
Maybe at least two characters, or your suffix?

Now, let's see how I did in the verbification/nounification department:

QRS: Adjective
QRP: Adjective
QNI's: Noun
QRS: Adjective
QRS: Verb
QNI: Verb

3 parts of speech, one Q signal! Not too shabby I think!

As far as speed goes Tom usually pops up and down to follow people being

quite well for me...

I'm also perfectly fine with 20WPM char speed with 10 to 13 WPM

thank you all for the many signal and weather reports. It is nice to know
that some of you are having a regular summer. Folks just don't believe me
when I tell them the temperature here. But this week it is supposed to break
80 degrees a couple of times. I will be on my roof putting in patches of
plywood. Given enough dry weather I will have a new roof covering on before
too long. Ice and snow shield and lots of tar. I expect to go through a
couple pairs of jeans and say goodbye to these boots. But Sam and I will be
 dry this winter!
Propagation was not too bad but not great either. I had a message from
Georgia which says K4JPN has been trying for the last three weeks with
nothing heard. Sorry Steve. I did work Florida each of the last two weeks
but not Georgia. Propagation is a mystery to me. QRN was present on 20
meters but quite loud on 40 meters as it has been for the last few months.
QRN was easily S6 the entire net with peaks up to S8. I was copying down to
about S2 but it was not easy. Luckily we have these Elecraft rigs which
somehow can perform magic on RF. Thanks guys!

Now a question to you all, check ins and prospective check ins alike: how
fast should we run the net? A few years ago Tom and I agreed to have me
limit my speed to 20 wpm while he varied his speed both up and down. Lately
Tom has been recuperating while I run the nets by myself. I have been
maintaining a steady 20 wpm character rate since about two years ago. When
necessary I add space between each character to slow down. Since I enjoy
meeting new operators all the time I do not wish to scare anyone off by
running too fast. However, when we use 'hail signs' it is difficult to
determine a preferred sending speed of the check in operator. Please feel
free to break me and send QRS if you're not copying me very well. I will add
spaces as necessary. However I can't slow down too much without making a ton
of errors. My fingers get all tangled up and I just plain lose it :( It
appears some discussion is in order. A little discussion may be on topic for
the Elecraft Reflector but if it gets to be too much just send me the
comments and I will endure the flames :) Eric has been known to let a lively
discussion last a few days before he asks it to end. A few days worth may be
enough to decide what we are to do for the future. Thank you for any input
you wish to send. Any errors in the above lists are attributable to me.
Please send me the corrections and I will fix the mess I've made. Now to
get to my other computer and work on it until Sunday evening is done. Thank
you very much for the interest and for your input.
Until next week stay well,

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 10th 12th, 2008

2008-08-11 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hi Kevin,

As we've discussed before, I am a QRS operator trying to (very slowly)
increase my speed. I'm pretty comfortable at the 10-13wpm range. I would
have no problem with 20wpm characters as long as the word spacing was around
13wpm.

I know this type of cw drives some people crazy, so I wouldn't want ECN to
change just for someone like me. I will get my speed up someday. But if it
was not a big deal to the rest of the group, I would be more inclined to
jump in. In fact, I can see this as real good practice for me to send at a
20wpm character speed and get used to hearing code at this speed.

I've listened in a couple of times and can pick up bits and pieces when
conditions are decent. But at this point, I don't think I could keep up.

Thanks for asking for input - here is my 0.02c.

73,
Dave W8FGU

only seen the temperature that high a couple times this year. This week it
is still raining every morning with sun coming out around noon. I will have
enough wood ready for two years soon if this weather keeps up. The

QRN is so high. Luckily during the Flight of the Bumblebees it was not so
bad. I tried all of the bands but only 20 and 40 meters gained me any

proportionately. I am going to continue to take advantage of the very mild
weather to do a little hiking. I will also pack all the material for the
roof up there now so I don't have to do so when the temperatures are in the
80s. I expect it will get warmer when the dry season gets underway but that
has yet to happen. Fireweed just started blooming if that gives you any idea
of the season up here. Lots of errands to run this week so I had better get
my home chores done tonight. Thus saying I am off (more than you'll ever

Hi Kevin,

Good to hear you on ECN. One change, my K3 is #1208 not 1207. It sure
seems like a very nice radio. I took it to the cabin over the weekend and
got in some nice QSOs. Had to come home early so we could attend my grand
daughter's sixth birthday party Sunday afternoon. So. I missed the 20
meter net. I can only run about 40 to 50 watts from here on 40 meters
since I knock out a couple of GFIs if I run 100 watts.

Hope to remember next week's net.

I am not sure how Elecraft is issuing serial numbers. I thought I read
somewhere that there could be differences in the sequence of kits versus
assembled units, but I cannot find anything on that. Maybe I was dreaming,

Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

2008-07-15 Thread David King
On July 3rd, Eric had posted the following reference serial numbers in a
message titled KRX-3:

We are shipping in two parallel groups: kit and built K3s. Since -F
built K3s are built to order, and because the kit and built versions are
built on different production lines, the s/n sequences will not be
exactly in sequence between the two groups getting KRX3s.
---

There are a lot more KRX3's backlogged for the kit version than for the
-F built version, since the initial orders strongly favored kits. We are
working through both of these groups in parallel (with different
production people) and as a result the -F serial numbers will appear to
jump forward faster than the kit versions.

2008-06-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Perhaps it's that the propagation numbers are, at the very best, general
indicators and mean absolutely nothing about the propagation at any given
time or place?

That's been the experience of those who explore conditions since the
Heaviside layer was discovered.

Clearly, you had some effective short skip going. That's not a bit unusual
over a 600 mile hop like you had. Short skip on 20 is much more prevalent
in the summer time when ionization levels are substantially higher, thanks
to the earlier sunrise. And such skip often has a lot of scattering
effect.

You didn't mention your precise antenna, but many beams have significant
side lobes. Not nearly as strong as the main lobe, but plenty strong enough
for just such contacts.

S9+ with my beam at 070 towards Tom, Kevin is sort of due north of me,

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for March

2008-03-03 Thread KM5Q

Kevin,

It's FINE to be elitist -- just include ALL the elite =^)

Your message gave me the idea to log S/Ns from EC rigs worked on the
SSB net. Some people will do ANYTHING for another certificate, and
we'll do ANYTHING to get more check-ins.

... We still need SD and DE for an Elecraft to Elecraft Worked All
States. It really doesn't count for WAS unless it is pure :) Not
being an elitist, I am simply making it a bit more difficult ;)

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for January 13th 14th, 2008

2008-01-14 Thread Kevin Rock
I gauge the conditions by the signal reports I receive from all the stations I
work. It is not guess work. It is solid fact from what is occuring on the
air. I use the same radio and the same antenna to glean these results.
Conditions were better for the two nets today than they have been in some time.
The sun threw a coronal mass ejection at us which caused aurorae. This makes
the ionosphere better for propagation. Simple physics nothing magical.

I read the sun was acting up and between nets read about aurora in

 the cycle was getting tiring!

Last week's sunspot from the next cycle does indeed show the start of the
next cycle, but you won't see any real improvement until 2010 at the
earliest, maybe later. That was a single spot, later ones were still from
the last cycle. The sunspot number at the moment is zero, conditions
basically flat, yesterday's disturbance not caused by spots at all. Any
feeling that you had good conditions was just in the mind...
