Steve Ireland wrote: It has been interested in reading the thread about a (or some) 'big gun' contesters still preferring the classic FT-1000D over the Elecraft K3. Hi Steve, From someone you know and love. I'd say this fairly well represents how many feel about the K3 versus FT-1000 family. W8JI says: That's like going to the Ford Mustang forum and asking how Mustangs are. :-) Take out Ford Mustang and insert K-3. I have been on the K-3 relectors for many months and it is obvious many drink the Elecraft Kool Aid. Mostly the only honest responses I got on the K-3 were private emails. If you dis the K-3 in public, one will get beat up cuz them K-3ers can get VERY nasty. I actually had one K-3er write me an extremely nasty email telling me to get off the K-3 reflector because my questions were too detrimental to K-3's Stan K9IUQ I don't know why people are like that, although some people do make mistakes or make a single problem with one radio a universal problem. I don't know of any perfect radio. They are just like women. :-) I will say thisI like how my Yaesu FT1000MP MKV's feel and work better than anything else except: I don't like a virtual radio, I want something to just grab and push buttons. I spend too much time with my computer as it is. I need stereo diversity with my antennas. Only the K3 does that properly in a radio package. There is no other choice. I want a cleaner transmitter. Even though I have declicked the MKV's, I'd like them to be better. The K3 is much cleaner (sometimes too clean). The K3 is better receiving with strong signals on crowded bands like contests. I'd like the K3 to be inside the FT1000 box and use the knobs and buttons of the FT1000, but it isn't going to happen. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
Stan and Company, Your points are well made Stan. I have inadvertently raised stink on the TenTec site questioning whether the development of this fine radio was now over. There has not been an upgrade now for over a year. I made the mistake of comparing the performance of Elecraft and TenTec and some of my fellow OII users took real exception that such a comparison should be voiced. Still this is one way progress is achieved. See what the other guy is doing and try to do better. Neither the K3 nor OII are perfect but they are both very good radios. If you compare the input of the users, designers and owners to the reflector then no one beats Elecraft. I would like a larger K3 but then again the small size and light weight of the K3 makes it possible to ship with relative ease from factory to overseas users. The kit approach is great in that it familiarizes us with the radio and allows one to more easily make hardware modifications. It also reduces import duty and cost. I have questioned before if a remote pad similar to the one sold by TenTec would make the radio more user friendly for some. If you are not using a logging program tied into the radio then punching the memory buttons is a pain for contest operation. I am now finding that I like the remote tuning knob on the OII pad in that one can set the radio back perhaps at an elevated position and easily tune. I believe there has even been some mention from the mother ship that such a pod is being considered. These days I am using the OII for a while waiting receipt of my DSP up grade board. This will not ship to me for another two weeks and it appears the ship date will be five weeks post my order so be prepared for a wait if you order this board. My plan is to finish off all upgrades and then install the second rx and antenna tuner purchased this past summer. I must learn to work faster. Guys lets not be too critical of those who criticize the K3 but be gentle. I hope Erich and Wayne are a long way from retirement as we will be fortunate to see their like again. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
I owned many years ago a FT-1000D and one month was enough for me to know that it was not a good radio for contestings/dx chase, not only I suffered the low BDR but also the high noise floor that did not let me hear weak stations from the noise, and of course when some one was close to my freq I lost the weak dx station.End of the story I sold it to buy the new FT-1000MP that was day and night compared to the 1000D. I used to have two FT-1000Ds (sold an FT-1000MP to buy the first one - the FT-1000D's audio peaking filter and nicer receive audio gave it the edge). I sold the first FT-1000D to buy a K3 and then sat the two alongside each other in a series of contests. I have two keen contesters nearby - one about 1km away and the other 10km away (which is a really nasty distance on the low-bands). The FT-1000D's blocking dynamic range (BDR) could barely cope, but with the K3's BDR and the 500Hz roofing filter I could not tell if the other blokes were on the same band unless they came within under one kilohertz of me on CW. On the FT-1000D, I could hear them 3 or 4 KHz away and it was impossible to operate much closer to them than 2 to 3 KHz on CW, making me miss stations regularly. Within six months I had sold the other FT-1000D and have never regretted it. The FT-1000D may look and feel a million dollars in comparison to the K3 (and is a great radio), but I know which one gets the job done better at my QTH in a contesting situation. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
Licensed in 1958 (I really was a youngster then), I have had the pleasure of owning a lot of different radios over the years, the last 3 were FT-1000D, FT1000Mp3 MKV and a TS-480 loved all of them. However, in my humble opinion, none compare to the K3. My only criticism, which Wayne has promised to address soon, is the inability to manage memories via software. Other than that, the K3 is my perfect radio. Thanks to all on this reflector in helping me to get familiar with this amazing radio over the past few weeks. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Elecraft-K3-versus-Yaesu-FT-1000D-tp4280215p4281138.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I also sold an FT-1000D that I bought new, and thought it was a great radio, and it was ... until I got my K3. Also sold an FT-990 and IC-756 PRO II at the same time. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here ... 73!
