FWIW, I use the same adapter, and have done so for a couple of years. It works well with the K3. You can also download drivers on the Belkin website if you need them. Jeez, I wish ham radios had USB ports ! Actually, you don't. Here is why. Every company who wants to make their device USB Capable picks some off-the-wall USB-to-Serial adaptor (or worse). Now the one good thing about someone still using serial is that I only need one make/model of USB-to-Serial adaptor for ALL my RS-232 devices. That means one device and one driver. Now contrast that with 5 different radios with 5 different USB interface chips from 5 different vendors. Can you say, 5 different drivers, at least one chock full of bugs? I knew you could. I have standardized on USB-to-serial adaptors based on the FTDI FT232RL chip. The ones I am using I got from Parallax and they work flawlessly. They are even serialized (serial number) and *always* come up as the same device regardless of where they get plugged into the USB. So, pick one reliable USB-to-serial device and use it for everything and only have to install one driver. Think about it. 73, Jamie WB4YDL ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. James: Go to www.keyspan.com/downloads/ Click on the model of the Keyspan adapter you have. That should bring up a webpage of drivers for the various versions of windows, including Vista. My recently purchased Keyspan adapter had no Vista drivers - just a little not directing me to the above. It included a utility to test the serial port(s). It also allows you to configure the ports and to make the comport number the correct number to work with your software. Also the Keyspan is the only serial adapter I have found that installs properly (XP or Vista). Others gave a warning that it was not compatible (the install instructions said to ignore this message and click on the continue button) which caused numerous other problems, such as stealing properly configured interrupts and com port assignments. Hello Rich and Brian and all: Thanks so much for your information - I couldn't have done it without you. Brian, your points are well taken of course. Rich, I have the much older version of the Keyspan adapter and the Vista drivers for it just don't work. I DID get the little USBGear (now Serial Gear) 2-port adapter to work on Vista finally with the new drivers posted on that web site - www.serialgear.com . Yep, it does have the FTDI chip. Hi Jack: I noticed while hooking up my laptop running WinXP SP3 and utilizing the Keyspan 4-port adapter, that running N3FJP's FD software, I could not get the rig interface to take. I tried different baud, stop bits, everything. It just would not work. CW keying was excellent. Well I tried other software on the laptop such as MixW and it also would not work with its CAT. Well I tried a different serial cable and then a USBGear USB adapter and nothing worked for rig interface. I took it to straight serial connection and it worked right away. Re: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation
OK, so you identified a couple of things to look for. Does the adapter work with other rigs/devices under XP SP3? There have been quite a few reports of problems with this update, I hope you haven't run into one. The latest Keyspan drivers for XP are dated July 4, 2007 - I presume you have those. By the way, the Keyspan driver files are different for XP and Vista, so be sure you have the right one for each OS. I don't think I would give up quite yet on either device. There appears to be some sort of configuration problem, work through it and things _should_ work. On May 23, 2008, at 3:53 PM, James C. That left me wondering 'what's the difference between the K2 and the K3?' Except for anything internal which I felt highly unlikely, the answer was the cable itself. Re: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation
Whew. That sounds great. We are truly glad it is working. Microsoft now allows folks to downgrade from Vista to XP if they have a copy of XP media to use. I don't know how the downgrade works, but it gives you a fully licensed version of XP on the machine. I guess lots of folks aren't very happy with Vista, although I am sure the fine engineers at Microsoft are working to remedy things there. Glad things are working out. If we can help more, just shout! On May 23, 2008, at 6:59 PM, James C. Hall, MD wrote: Hello: Well it appears I discovered that not all serial cables are built the same. Belkin USB-to-Serial Portable Adapter Item 597324 - Staples # Model F5U409V1 - Belkin # I do not know if it works from N3FJP, but it does work from N1MM when I have RTS-DTR set on the rig. Just have to leave the rig off while the computer is booting up, or it keys. I have two available - Keyspan 4-port and a USBGear 2-port. Both have worked admirably with everything - until now. When I re-hooked my K3 back to the shack computer with a true serial port, it connected immediately - no sweat. CW keying was never a problem with the USB adapters. I need to find a USB-serial adapter that WILL work with the K3 in time for FD. I hate this because these adapters worked so well with the K2. 73, Jamie WB4YDL ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
