[Elecraft] KSYN3A dead?

2015-08-04 Thread Enrico Lorenzoni IU3AZC
Hi everyone, today I turned on my K3 and I can't receive any signal in
any band.

Then I tried to tune and power out is 0.0w.
My k3 has two ksyn3a, but in the menu I see DDS FRQ and VCO MD; also
tapping DISP I see PLL1 and PLL2 (with value ranging from 2.9 to 3.1)

So it looks like the K3 doesn't recognize the two syn.
Fw rew is 5.14
Any hint? I have not opened it yet.
I have the old PLL if needed

thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KSYN3A dead?

2015-08-04 Thread Enrico Lorenzoni IU3AZC

Hi Petr, I have two ksyn installed, and both worked fine for some months.
I did not open my K3 in the last weeks, and two days ago my K3 was ok,
so this happened without touching anything.
An italian OM had another problem with a deprogrammed SYN. I wonder if
Elecraft is aware of this and who's gonna pay the cost to reprogram it?

thanks for the reply

Hi Enrico,

The correct status for KSYN3A boards in TECH MD: ON is OK! So you should see
SYN1 OK and SYN2 OK if you have both installed. The latest KSYN3A boards
should work with 5.14 or later.

Please open K3 and at first check if your cables are connected to right
boards (not swapped by accident) and if all connectors are properly plugged
in and have proper contacts please. It is common issue the TMP connectors
has bad contact on the synths boards.

Hope it helps,

[Elecraft] low IF out on K3

2016-04-07 Thread Enrico Lorenzoni IU3AZC

hello everyone,
I just compared my k3 with a friend's one and my IF out is much lower
than his k3.
I suspected it when listening on a softrock, but now I can see a
difference like 10 or 20db off.

So I inspected my k3 and the IF out connector is fine. Multimeter says 0
ohms between bnc contacts and P86 pins on motherboard.

What can I check next?
Anyone did fix this same issue?

thanks

Enrico,

How old is your K3? I believe they made a change to increase the
output on the "newer" units. I'm not sure which serial number this

Hi, I confirm: R8 is labeled "133", so it is a 13k resistor.

Re: [Elecraft] low IF out on K3

2016-04-08 Thread Enrico Lorenzoni IU3AZC

hello everyone. My K3 is # 80XX so it should be fine.
With my multimeter I checked R8 and it's reading 270ohms (mounted on the
board).
From the schematic I guess there should be no DC flowing and that I
should read 13.3k, so I think R8 is broken or the problem is in Q10 fet,
being resistive on the gate.
anyone has experience in this, before I start desoldering components and
measure them?

thanks

Enrico

Older K3 transceivers (built before September 2009) do have lower output
than later units. Elecraft published a modification that involves replacing
a single resistor to bring up the level.

They have a kit that includes an SMD and a leaded resistor (you can use
either, only one is installed). Order the KIO3BUFFKT. You can see what is
involved by reviewing the instructions available for download here:

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/IF_Output_Buffer_Gain_Mod_Rev_A.pdf

If you have a 13K ohm, 1/8 watt leaded resistor or if you'd rather work with
an SMD, a 13K 0805 size resistor, you won't need the kit.

[Elecraft] white noise in headphones with beta firmware

2016-10-28 Thread Enrico Lorenzoni IU3AZC
hello, today I just updated my k3 with the latest beta firmware, so I
could record monitor from line out.
But as soon as I applied the update, I started hearing a white noise in
my headphones. It is indipendent from AF level.
Could you please fix the firmware so I don't have to revert and loose
the recording ability?

thanks
