RE: Reliability recommended books
First thing is you need to decide what you are trying to accomplish and it eventually gets into philosophies about reliability. If you are trying to measure reliability some of the good books are: Pat O'Connor's Practical Reliability Engineering which is a good intro book; Finn Jensen's Electronic Component Reliability which is excellent also. Handbook of Reliability Engineering and Management is a good reference book to have on the shelf. We could spend hours on this discussing the disadvantages of trying to measure reliability in the Mil-STD 217 parts count methods and the variations of it that are out there, the controversies of the Arrhenius equation for temp. aging effect in the parts count method, etc. Of course this isn't the approriate forum. =) Matthew Kilkenny Reliability Engineer mkilke...@opthos.com --- This message is from the IEEE EMC Society Product Safety Technical Committee emc-pstc discussion list. Re: Quality Assurance and Product Approvals
Hi Alan: Two questions, does the group see a time when we have a VP Compliance on level terms with VP Finance, VP Marketing etc, or is this already happening in the US. No. And not likely to happen in companies with ordinary products. As a general rule, compliance is seen as a necessary evil. It is a cost without an associated revenue (or customer-recognized need or benefit). Few companies want to give VP status (and an empire) to a non-revenue- generating function. Many companies measure the product incremental cost for compliance. The objective is to find methods and means for minimizing these product costs. Furthermore, few companies recognize the work of compliance folks as prevention of future unanticipated costs such as failure of sales due to non-compliance, product liability, or even product recalls. The reason the work is not recognized is the difficulty of measuring the future cost of non-compliance, especially if the company has never had such an incident. Second Question. Does the group think a formal qualification in Compliance Management CE Marking would be a good idea. While we may think this is a good idea, most professional managers in the field of compliance consider the job as one interim step in their career. If compliance is a non- revenue-generating activity, then the step to personal growth is to measure the cost of compliance for the duration of one's leadership, and add this to one's CV. Then, move on. Candidates for compliance management might find courses useful. However, the value of such qualifications is not for the long term. Another problem is that upper management doesn't want to be told that they are restricted by compliance rules insofar as setting objectives for the products and the company. They certainly don't want to feel that the only management folks qualified for managing a compliance function are those that are trained and qualified in compliance management. Formal qualification in compliance management may be seen by upper management as a power play where the compliance manager uses his knowledge to gain some degree of control over other managers. If formal qualification in compliance management is principally that of methodology for measuring and reducing cost of compliance, then I would think this would be a very good idea. The former Rome Air Development Center is just down the road from here. I just wanted to point out that their name was changed to Rome Labs during the 90's. So, if you don't have any luck with RADC or Rome Air Development Center, try Rome Labs. They also have a spin-off dedicated to reliability called the RAC or Reliability Analysis Center. Re: Near field vs far field
A much simpler answer is that as long as source (EUT) is small relative to separation and separation is long relative to a wavelength then 1/r scaling is fairly accurate, but if those conditions are not met scaling for another distance cannot be performed. My earlier posting on this subject incorrectly made the antenna short relative to a wavelength. That requirement is only necessary in microwave bands with highly directional antennas, not below a GHz where we use low gain antennas. on 11/26/01 5:01 AM, CE-TEST at cet...@cetest.nl wrote: Hi The transition from near to far field is very complex. It depends on the source of the radiation. If the source is electric field (voltage/air capacitor/small dipole) is has 3 vector components all at right angles of each other of which 2 are electric and one is magnetic. To make it more complex each of the 3 vectors have another relation ship with the distance : 1/r3 (E) 1/r2 (H) and 1/r (E). If the source is dominantly magnetic (small current loop or piece of wire carrying current) then the same reasoning as above exists but with magnetic and electric field terms exchanged. To discourage you completely: most sources are of a mixed character ! ;)) Good information of this can be found in books such as Goedbloed 's that actually lists out the formula's in a easy form. For emc measurements we are mainly concerned with the 1/r terms because the others die out faster when the distance rises. Hi all, I am trying to re-design our current power supply to meet GR-1089-Core Specification. The Power Supply has a -48V input and 5VDC/100W, 5VDC/100W and 12VDC/150W Output. Based on current testing, we did not comply with Section 9.10.6 Frame Surge Test. This test applies a surge current as defined in IEEE C62.41. The filter capacitor was destroyed during this test. The capacitor is rated at 100V. I think this capacitor should be replaced with a higher voltage X or Y capacitor. Possibly a GDT or TVS is required. RE: Notified Body Question
1) You can check the list of notified bodies to verify the NB listing. 2) The lab was probably accredited to EN45001 when it was valid. Accrediting bodies are transferring accreditations from 45001 and ISO Guide 25 to IEC/ISO/EN17025 but an 'upgrade' is not automatic, nor did it begin with the demise of EN45001. Accrediting bodies needed time to prepare materials and a programme for 17025. Also the test lab may have old cover pages and pre-printed certificates to use up. 3) If the report was issued before or during the transition of accreditation from EN45001, the lab cannot yet claim 17025. However if they are listed with an authorized 17025 accrediting body, they should be using very similar controls for competency of personnel and accuracy of reports. One US accreditor allows 1 year for an accredited lab to calculate its EMC uncertainty; accredited labs may have unresolved deficiencies. I recommend you e-mail the lab to affirm the status of changeover to 17025. RE: Near field vs far field
Hi The transition from near to far field is very complex. In a 3m distance we measure 30dBuV/m at 30MHz What value could we expect at 1m distance ? I'm not asking for the correct dBuV/m value..., but what really happens when we go so far into the object near field ? Does it exist a kind of empiric equation which roughly can give us a number ? Please, if you have an links to the Web-articles about near-far fields effects, I would like to know.
